Shattering Election Day Illusions

Trigger Warning!  If you believe your life depends on the outcome of today’s elections, you might not want to read this blog as it will poke a hole in whatever attachment you have formed around the election and your personal hoped-for outcome.  While I support our right to vote and wish, dream and hope for a government that actually lives by the principles upon which our country was established, I’m no longer sure that is possible. There is no person “out there” who is going to save us and if we are attached to an outcome of today’s elections, you will likely be disappointed – maybe not immediately, but later as we learn that really nothing has changed.  Here are my ponderings on this day of midterm elections:

I voted….and I have no delusion or attachment to the outcome.  As I recently told a friend, I suspect that one of two things will happen:  Democrats will win and nothing will change or the Republicans will win and nothing will change. Why?  Because the change we are all looking for has absolutely NOTHING to do with what is happening outside of us. That is the lie we tell ourselves to keep us believing we have some measure of control over our lives.  As the death of two friends, the terminal diagnosis of another and the son of another friend who is currently fighting to stay alive from an as-yet diagnosed illness reminds me, we are NOT in control of whether we live or die and the outcome of today’s elections will not change that.

The truth is that we have no control over what is happening outside of us. We only have control over what is happening within.  And if we want to see change outside of us, we first have to change what is within. This is the truth of all spiritual systems. What we see in the political world as polarization and division will continue until it is healed – and that healing is an inside job.  It’s all an inside job. As I recently shared on my own blog, “when the ship is going down, the only one we can save is ourselves.” I call this the “Titanic philosophy.”

As a friend recently reminded me, what we see on the outside of the political game has nothing to do with what we can see and what is reported in the media, and everything to do with what is behind the curtain – the hidden, insidious power brokers who are actually running our government. But again, we cannot change what’s behind the curtain, we can only support ourselves in learning how to see….to pierce through the veil of lies, manipulation, distractions, etc. and live from a place of our own truth.

There is no magical day where the world will suddenly be peaceful and free. There is not a person outside of us (most especially among politicians) who is going to save us or our world. The human condition IS the human condition and it is our individual task to remember and then live our divinity within the human condition. Will there be a day when critical mass is reached and the world becomes a nicer, kinder, gentler place? Perhaps. But until (and if) that happens, we can only create that peaceful, kinder, gentler world within ourselves and live from that.

I, for one, am done waiting for the world to wake up (one of those illusions we tell ourselves) and am taking care of myself. In doing this, I am giving others permission and an example for doing the same. This is all I can do and all (I am coming to believe) any of us are asked to do. If the world “out there” is causing us distress, it is simply because it is triggering a fear within us that has not yet been healed. Observe our reaction. Identify the fear. Heal the fear. Return to peace. It is that simple.

Now, if everyone in the world followed this method, then YES our world might become a peaceful magnificent place. But, in my experience, few are willing to do this work which is why the world remains as it is and will continue on this path. Which brings me back to this truth – the only thing we can change is ourselves and that is solely an inside job.

Get out and vote. Or don’t.  The outcome has no bearing on your ability to live within or from a place of peace.  That is up to you.

Fear Begets Fear – Thoughts on the Upcoming Presidential Election

If there is one thing I have learned in 20 years of supporting women and men in becoming their most authentic, self-actualized self, it is that fear begets fear.  Most specifically, when we make decisions based in fear, we get more fear.  Our lives become smaller, more constricted, we suffer from unhappiness and a deep sense of being unfulfilled.  When we make decisions, instead, from a place of love, peace, contentment and truth….or when we wait for the decision to arrive that reflects these qualities, our experiences of love, peace, contentment and joy increase.  Our life takes on a sense of meaning and we feel fulfilled.

Fear + Fear = More fear.

Love + Truth = Contentment and peace

As this mathematical equation is true on an individual basis, so it is on the collective. It would be helpful to bear this in mind as we approach the 2016 presidential elections.

election 2016

When we choose a candidate who capitalizes on our fears, who paints a picture of fear, who attempts to create separation or capitalize on existing or growing systems of separation, then this is exactly what we will get – a country that is more polarized than it already was before, stepping out into a world creating more separation.

If, on, the other hand, we patiently wait for the candidate to step forth who will speak to us of truth, who seeks to bring us together instead of attempting to separate, who desires to support a political system and a world that works to build rather than tear down, who speaks about practical means of healing the separations in our country and in our world….then this is what we will get – a country that is able to come together as one, working together for the common good, and then doing the same as it goes out into the world.

As for myself, I haven’t yet decided who I want to vote for. Quite frankly, I’m not thrilled with any of our current options.  What I do know is that I will be making my decision based on love and truth, not on fear, because love and truth is what I want to see in our world, not more of the fear that has ruled for the past 5000 years.

(PS What holds true in electing a president, holds true for all elected officials.  Fear begets fear!  What kind of world do you want to live in – one that tears us apart through fear or one that brings us together as love?)

Eyes of the Prophet

The eyes of a prophet discerning Spirit.

Seeing beyond the veil that seems to masks the eyes of others.

Seeing the truth that stands not behind, not beside, not within,

But that which stands in front of the illusion,

“Here I am, this is who I am really, not the one she sees or that everyone else sees, this is my truth.”

Clear, radiant, glowing, joyful, at peace and content,

Though on her cheek, a tear of sadness

for the ones who dare not see, acknowledge or live in this truth.

She waits in patience for the vessel to be ready to let that light shine.

Seeing with eyes that see beyond the veil

Of lies kept hidden, secrets kept, betrayals, deceit,

Eyes shifting, gazing downward, revealing discomfort.

Seeing with eyes that know the truth behind the lies, the fear, the guilt, the shame,

All nurtured to keep deceit alive.

The prophet sees and knows.

Seeing with eyes that see beyond the veil of denial.

There is a map, a timeline, a vision

Of things to come if what is now in place continues to choose the way that is familiar,

“It will not end here….this shall be next.”

And it is.

Endings. Doors are closed.  And death.

Seeing and knowing this is what would be

If fear is chosen over love.

And yet, there is a light. And the light is love.

Seeing with eyes that see beyond the veil of despair,

Knowing that even in death there is the promise of new life,

If we but open our eyes and see.

Government Shutdown? It’s not over ’til it is over…and the end is up to us!

Well, the government shutdown has come to an end and the debt ceiling temporarily released.  Do not, however, let this band-aid approach to the issues fool you.  We are not out of hot water folks!  We are still plagued with the issues of a bi-partisan government, mostly controlled by special interest groups who have their own interests in mind, not the interest of the common good.  Our founding fathers established a representative government whose job was to work for the interest of the common good.  This model has been destroyed from the inside by the corporate greedy who have paid to put their puppets in office.  Granted, not all Senators or Congressmen are guilty of this, but the vast majority are, which leaves those with noble intentions powerless.

What does any of this have to do with the mission of birthing our Souls?  Quite frankly, it has everything to do with it.  When we remain silent to our own gifts, our call to be loving, compassionate and peaceful people, the structures outside of us reflect our own arrested development.  When we ignore the voice of our truth, suppress our uniquely creative gifts, deny the force within us that seeks fulfillment and joy, we enable a world where we are silenced, suppressed and oppressed, and we are vulnerable to the power structures which capitalize on the inner fears that keep us imprisoned.  In the end, we have no one to blame but ourselves for the current mess we are facing in our government, our economy, our medical structures, education, etc. etc. etc.  When our economy crashes, which is where things are heading,  and we are tempted to point fingers at the government officials and corporate power mongers, we might want to look in the mirror instead.  WE are the ones who put these people in power by remaining silent, by giving into the status quo instead of mustering up the courage to cultivate our own souls which in turn cultivates a culture with soul instead of the soulless culture we are now living in.  Yes, my words today might appear harsh to some, but desperate times calls for desperate measures.  What do YOU want to do about it?  Nothing will change and we will continue plummeting toward destruction until YOU do something about it.

1) Start with yourself.  Who are you and what do you want out of this life?  More importantly, what does your SOUL want? What are the fears standing in the way of birthing your soul?  Seek tools to help you move through these fears.  Finding peace within yourself contributes to a peaceful world.  Find a mindfulness practice that helps you to cultivate this inner state of peace.

2) Take time to listen to your Soul.  Hear what it has to say to you.  YOU have been uniquely gifted to find meaning, purpose and connection in your life and to work for the betterment of our world.  THE WORLD NEEDS YOU and your gifts.

3) Seek support.  Gather your friends.  Support each other’s dreams.  Empower the use of your unique gifts.  Enjoy the freedom of gifts unleashed and fulfillment realized.

4) LOOK for the people, organizations, communities you are called to serve.  Who needs your gifts?  How will the world be made better with your gifts?   Do what you are called to do.  Be who you are called to be.

5) AND  VOTE with your voice, your hands, your feet and most importantly, your heart.  What kind of world do you want to leave for your children?  A world controlled by fear and under the command of the greedy few or a world where we live in peaceful harmony, where the needs of the all are considered and fulfilled and where every single man, woman and child is honored as a sacred child of God?

The world that we live in is up to you.
