Receiving a Vision and Seeing it Through

For many years I have used the Tarot as a source of guidance and support. I do not believe the cards themselves are guiding me, but that the archetypal images are reflecting back to me the deep truths I know in my heart but sometimes cannot see through the intrusions of the mind.  Yesterday morning, at another crossroads in my life, I laid cards.  What came through at once surprised me and affirmed what I have known all along.  I have many times been given a vision of my mission and purpose in this life.  This mission has not changed and is being fulfilled in the timing that can only come from the Divine. As I told a friend on Monday,

“I am very clear on my mission. As the Catholic Church (and other forms of institutional religion) implode upon themselves, I am here as a bridge, a source of comfort and a guide.  I am able to speak the language of the people who will be leaving the Church.  I can be a source of comfort and support for their grief and shock.  I will support them in finding healing from the trauma and break free of co-dependency.  I will provide them with tools in a language with which they are familiar that will empower them in finding their own truth.”

This is the work I have been doing for the past 25 years and the work I will continue to do. In laying cards, this has, once again, been confirmed:

Here were the cards I drew:

The Empress: At the center is the card that represents self. Here, she is the Empress.  The Empress, here represented by St. Helena represents the reception of a vision/mission/purpose and the courage and strength to see it through.  The Empress tells us, “You know what your mission is…..stick with it….be true to your mission….and see it through. In remaining diligent and faithful, it will be fulfilled.

High Priestess: The second card represents the situation we are currently facing. Here, represented by the Magdalene who plays the role of priestess.  The priestess card is all about the inner journey, the esoteric, mystery and intuition. The priestess card presides over the gateway between life and death is able to communicate with “the gods.”  The Priestess tells us to listen to the voice within and act according to its dictates.  She tells us to trust our intuition even (especially) when it makes no logical sense whatsoever.  She reminds me that this is what I am to continue to do for myself, while supporting others in doing the same.

Ten of Staffs: To the right of the two center cards is the card that represents new beginnings and inspiration. Here – the ten of staffs which represent RESURRECTION.  What has died will find new life.  The phoenix will come forth out of the ash.  Considering all the endings and “death” I have experienced in the past many years, I can only take this as a message of great hope and promise, confirming what I have always believed  –  if the Universe is asking so much to come to an end, it must be for the sake of something HUGE.  I welcome whatever that might be.

6 of Cups: At the bottom is the card that presents transition. Connected with the element of fire it represents taking in what is life-giving and letting go of that which no longer serves.  This is the corner of transformation.  As the 6 of cups, this card represents service – specifically service to others.  Here, depicted as Jesus washing the feet of his disciples – a card of humble service and the inversion of hierarchy.  I take this as an invitation to hold true to my commitment and focus on humble service – avoiding the temptations of the ego to place oneself above others as “teacher” or “priest” or “guru” but instead as companion.  We are all on this journey trying to figure our own sh.t out.  If I can help others find themselves in the middle of the debris of our human experience, then I am humbled and grateful to do so.

The Star: The card to the left represents the process of coming into maturity – approaching the fruition of our labors. In the traditional Tarot, this is the Star card, here portrayed by Teresa of Avila in her vision of the interior castle (heaven) and the seven step process of getting there.  This card represents our own ascension (attainment of self-actualization and bringing that into our lived experience.)  It also represents a breakthrough and an opportunity suddenly becoming available.  I’ll take it!

Knight of Swords: The top cards represent the outcome of the journey. The first card, the Knight of Swords, invites us to explore our demons and our attitude toward them.  Are they our enemy and something to be destroyed, or can we find a gentler way of dealing with the perceived obstacles both within and outside of us?  St. George invites me to take the gentle path and to work toward integration and union rather than destruction.  Interestingly this is EXTREMELY relevant at this time in my journey.

Nine of Coins: The final card is the card of true abundance – a spiritual abundance providing material support. It also represents receiving the fruits of our labors. This is the experience I’ve been waiting for….and may it be so!

Being a Catalyst

The Plight of the Sh.t-Disturber

I recently posted an article To See or Not to See – That is the Question, exploring the gift of spiritual sight.  There is one challenge with this gift I neglected to mention:

The ability to see all the way to people’s (and organizations’) truest and most authentic selves and the potential that lay within them for a meaningful, purposeful and fulfilling life.

I see who they are meant to be behind all the masks they show to the world along who they came into this world to be behind all the unhealed wounds and unacknowledged fears that keep them imprisoned in an unfulfilling, unrewarding life.

Along with this ability, is the very real experience that happens when I see someone in this way – they begin to wake up. The very fact that I can see them….really see them, stirs something within them that knows they are not living as their most authentic self, that they are not being who they came into this world to be.  Call it guilt, or shame, or a feeling we don’t yet have a word for – something stirs in them – a kind of discomfort that they somehow recognize came from me, through me or because of me.  Some people are excited to feel this experience of awakening and are glad for being seen so they can begin to acknowledge and unleash their true selves.  Others – not so much.  Not everyone wants to be seen and certainly not everyone wants to do the REALLY HARD work of becoming their true selves.  For the former, I am a welcome source of support.  For the latter, I often become the enemy.

I will wholeheartedly admit that the latter experience has been a source of pain for me. This has been especially true in close relationships as well as in EVERY SINGLE work or academic institution I have been connected with.  I show up and sh.t starts happening.  The lies, the falsehoods, deceptions, misguided motivations, compulsions and attachments all begin to show themselves.  While this is happening, I’m being shown all the resources of support that would benefit their healing and the realization of their truest most authentic self.  I suggest these supports which are either met with blank stares and deaf ears or outright condemnation and rejection.  At this point, the relationship is now in question and I am either forced to leave or I decide to leave on my own.  It is difficult, if not impossible, to remain in a place where our gifts are not welcome.  At this point all I can do is sit and watch as the house of cards they have built for and around themselves comes tumbling down.

The opposite, however, is true of those who are excited and grateful to be seen and who want to pursue a purposeful and fulfilling life reflective of their own unique gifts and passions. These are the people and institutions in whom my gifts find their fulfillment, resulting in a co-creative dynamic of receptivity and openness where they are liberated from the inner wounds and fears which might otherwise keep them from living as their most authentic selves.  It is a beautiful thing to behold and it is because of these people that I continue to do what I do in spite of those who want to hate me for my gifts.  (PS  They don’t really hate me, they hate themselves for refusing their own truth.)

Catching Up with Ourselves

If you are reading this blog, chances are you feel in your heart a deep burning to be part of making the world a better place. You have carried within yourself a vision of a different world than the one in which we have been living. You know that as a species we are capable of so much more than what we have settled for in the past 5000 years. You know in your heart that human beings are capable of creating a planet that lives in harmony and peace, that understands that it is care for (rather than dominion over) our planet that will sustain us, that love and unity are entirely possible if we put our minds (and hearts) to it. You know that you are here for this reason and you will not rest in peace until this reason has been accomplished. The problem is that most of your life you have felt alone with these thoughts and entertaining this vision has likely put you in conflict with most of those around you, the institutions in which you were raised and the “tribal” rules of your family and the communities in which you found yourself living. In order to heed the voice of your Soul/heart, you had to step outside the status quo, rock the boat and disturb the sh.t; or the pain of rejection was just too great a risk and so you hid your gifts away hoping you wouldn’t be seen for the PROPHET you are.

The good news is that you are not alone, the time of hiding has come to an end and the world is finally ready for our vision and our gifts (or there are finally enough of us waking up that the scales have tipped and the world can no longer ignore or resist our presence and our mission). As Stephanie Azaria (TheCosmicPath.com) mentioned last week, “we are catching up with ourselves.” In other words, the reason and purpose for our lives and our unique call is finally catching up with the vision we have held onto all these many years.

Sally (Sandra Bullock) plays a modern-witch in the movie Practical Magic.

For me, it is all about the magic – specifically the magic that will create our world anew – the magic that inspired me first through fantasy in the forms of Samantha Stevens (Bewitched), Morticia Addams, Sally Owens (Practical Magic), Rowan Mayfair and Michael Curry (The Witching Hour), Obi Wan Kenobi, Merlin and Morgan LeFay, Galadriel and Gandalf the Grey. I have known in my heart of hearts, in my Soul of Souls that magic is not only possible but quite real. I have also known that we don’t have to wiggle our nose to make magic happen but that it simply arises out of our beings when in partnership with the Divine and the highest purpose of our Soul. Jesus called this magic FAITH. As I have come to understand it, faith is not an act of will as has often been interpreted, but is instead and natural unfolding of our Soul’s purpose when we are courageous enough to get our minds out of the way. Faith produces miracles and requires no effort on our part except to get out of the way. While we may need to take action on the Divine guidance offered, nose wiggles and magic wands are not usually required to get the job done.

Magic, I believe, is what will make our world anew and as I see it, magic is already happening. Magic is happening for me in the miraculous way my initial vision of reforming The Church has ultimately come to pass, but ironically I no longer feel the need to reform or change anything. I simply feel called to continue the work Jesus did of bringing people to LOVE and teaching them about ONENESS. The rest, I have learned, is taking care of itself. In heeding this call, a new/original model of church and priesthood have emerged on their own – not by my efforts to change things, but by my willingness to do nothing. As if by magic, something new and wonderous has emerged. As it grows, its roots reach deep into the earth and its branches reach out to embrace the wider world and soon this tree will be seen by all. This tree is showing the world a new/original way of supporting humanity in its individual and collective psycho-spiritual growth – the kind of growth that helps to support the birth of a new and more loving world. Now, if that isn’t magic, I don’t know what is!

And, I’m not alone. Each and every one of you has your own unique vision, mission and purpose for this life. You have held this vision in your heart and if you are honest with yourself, it BURNS within you. This vision is waiting to be acknowledged, nurtured and cultivated so it can find its own roots and branches, supporting the new life that is waiting to be born through you. The world has caught up with your vision and now it is time for you to set it free!
