New Online Course – Mastering the Shadow

Mastering the Shadow – transforming your deepest fears and unhealed wounds is a shamanic ritual practice for those who find themselves in the depths of their core spiritual wounds and who are longing to be free of their effects so they might once again be anchored in their original wholeness.  Mastering the Shadow is a practice that is meant to be returned to again and again as the symptoms of your core wound are triggered.  With on-going attention to this practice, you will be “loving yourself back together.”

This training includes instruction in and step by step guidance through the eight stages of the Mastering the Shadow shamanic ritual practice along with a downloadable PDF of the practice for your ongoing use.

From the course introduction:

Mastering the Shadowtransforming your deepest fears and unhealed wounds is a shamanic ritual and practice for those who find themselves in the depths of their core spiritual wounds.  These are the wounds that are specifically related to the core wound of separation but are unique to each individual depending on how they first experienced this wound.

This is a mastery practice because it demands an ongoing, diligent practice of personal accountability.  This is NOT the kind of practice where you can “think” your pain away.  Through this practice you will dive deeply into the core of your pain – being in and with that pain, for the sake of supporting its transformation and release while re-integrating the part of your soul that was lost to the original wounding.

This work is eq1ually not about “letting it go” as separation is implicit in the idea of letting go.  As the Buddhist sages remind, “What you resist will persist.”  If you believe you need to be rid of something by letting it go, you are only creating more separation.  This practice invites you instead to draw the pain intimately close where you will be literally loving yourself back together.

When Our Shadows Come Out to Play

(“Duck those Ducking Duckers!”)

The deepest, most exquisite part of my gift to the world is my ability to work in and with the shadows – the pain, sorrows, traumas, fears and other areas of woundedness we try to hide from the world and from ourselves.  In order to do this work with and for others, I first have to do it for myself.  As life continues to remind me, our shadow work is never done.  Even when we think we have sufficiently grieved a loss, healed a trauma, released a pain, there are remnants of it that will remain, waiting to surface again (most often when we least expect it) for another layer of healing.

Yesterday, I found myself in that place. An innocent article appeared on Facebook, an article I had seen a million other times, about Reiki being offered in hospitals.  I don’t know why yesterday was different from any other day, but I read the headline of that article and I LOST IT!  Are you kidding me?  Reiki in hospitals?  Knowing that at least half of the hospitals in the United States are run by the Catholic Church, I found myself enraged.  Not because Reiki might now be available in Catholic hospitals (hurray) but because of the local self-appointed inquisition, the local Church and the local bishop and his cronies who made my life a living hell all because of Reiki.  In my rage (grief) I posted on FB, “If Reiki is being offered in Catholic hospitals too, there are several bishops and members of the local self-appointed inquisition who owe me an apology and maybe some financial consideration for the hell they put me through!”  And I meant it!  Those duckers made my life a living hell and the PTSD I now bear is partly because of the soul wrenching pain I experienced due to their ministrations and constant harassment. The result of my “run in” with the Church was my leaving and wondering if karma was ever going to have its way with those ducking duckers. The truth I came to yesterday is “not likely.”  “They” will go on living in their self-righteous, fundamentalist interpretation of Catholic teaching, making themselves and the people around them miserable with their constant scrutiny, while I am walking around free.

……and……there it is.  I’m free. I am free of the outside perceived authority of the Church and the laws that men created to strike fear in the hearts of human beings so they could be manipulated and controlled.  Fear of hellfire and damnation no longer plague my life.  I no longer fear a jealous or angry “god.”  I am no longer looking over my shoulder wondering if I am adequately upholding Catholic teaching so that my entrance into heaven might be assured.  I am no longer running from the “snares of the devil” as “Satan” and I have become friends.  (for more on why Satan isn’t who “he” was made out to be read HERE).  And finally, I no longer fear death.  When my time comes, I will greet Death as a welcome friend.  I no longer fear death because when we free ourselves from the illusion of hell and the threat of eternal punishment, in death there is nothing to fear.  This has been my “reward” for staying true to the Divine calling of my Soul, while those who continue to threaten and harass are imprisoned by their fear.

I share this story as an example of WHY I do what I do and WHY it is imperative that we meet our shadows face to face.  Our shadows surface, not to haunt us or cause us pain, but to lead us to freedom.  Every time our shadows come out to play, when we meet them (instead of running from them) and when we allow ourselves every single emotion and thought that accompanies them (ie:  “duck those ducking duckers”) we find our way to freedom and release.  It is only in being present to our pain that we can find its release.  It is only in being present to our wounds and facing the tragedies of our past that we can be freed to walk the path of our truth.

If you are looking for assistance in navigating the path of your shadows, I am available for one-on-one mentoring and there are several course offerings which support the journey through the shadows.

The Shadow Keepers

Shadow workers and Shadow keepers are those who have been given a deep and painful gift – the ability and calling to see, hear and FEEL the pain of the world. We are those who have no choice but to bear witness to the darkness, pain, hatred and fear in our world.  Not only are we called to be witness, however, we are also called to FEEEEEEEL it.  The purpose of this feeling (I continue to tell myself) is so that the darkness might be transformed and be brought into the light.  Sometimes we do this by pointing out the darkness so that others might see.  More often, however, it is accomplished through our being, so much so that often it brings us to our knees.  Yesterday was one of those days.

Teresa of Avila by Bernini

I did it to myself. I overworked myself for three straight days, culminating in an 18 hour day of frantic computer programming work that was largely out of my comfort zone, and as it turns out, not what I want for my business in the first place.  After 18 hours of work, I ended up taking it all down.  Then it hit me.  I woke up yesterday morning with the feeling of DEATH.  I felt chilled to the bone, nauseous, dizzy and my whole body hurt.  The sun hurt my eyes and any sound or movement made me feel like I might collapse.  I had no choice but to call in sick for the day and collapse on the couch where I intermittently slept and moaned, “I’m dying.”  Today I have the “hangover” from yesterday’s wrath.  UGH!

In the center of all of this I did the normal wondering, “What is wrong with me? Am I depressed?  How could I ever get a “real job” if I am struck down like this on a somewhat regular basis?”  Etc. etc.  Then I read these words of Ellias’ Lonsdale as they were quoted at www.thecosmicpath.com.:

The shadow vigil is not something we make up. It is not just our own gloominess and negativity. We are being shown the places others miss and we are being asked to stay tuned to these and to be aware, be alert, be in the spit for whatever might arise. And as we get into this stance, it may be too much to bear, but what we are being shown is vital to grasp, crucial to become a conduit for, even if we might become greatly darkened in the bargain.

So there it is. The calling of the shadow workers and the shadow keepers.  It is our task to BE IN the darkness.  To see it.  Hear it.  Feel it.  Often before it is even able to be seen.  (For example, I FELT the 800 troops and the “suspicious packages” even before they were announced).  We are called to be in it…..BUT……and here is the key for our own survival…….WE ARE NOT IT.  We are NOT the darkness.  We are not depressed.  There is nothing wrong with us.  What is wrong is the world when it strays from its original nature as love which we feel as “a disturbance in the force.”  Now….if there was only a way to get paid for the invaluable service we provide for the world in seeing, hearing, feeling and TRANSFORMING its darkness.

Confronting Our Shadow. Unleashing Our Light.

We will never truly be free until we confront our shadow. The shadow is all of the parts of ourselves that have not been fully integrated:

  • Everything we have denied.
  • Everything we suppress.
  • Everything we repress.
  • All the parts of ourselves we judge as negative so we hide them away from the world.
  • Our unacknowledged fears.
  • Our unhealed wounds.
  • The parts of our nature, personality or temperament that we reject.
  • The parts of ourselves we hide as they are judged as unworthy by our society.

shadow, shadow work, quiet desperation, confronting our shadow, healing our shadow, bringing forth our light

The challenge with the shadow is that (as the Buddhists say), “What we resist will persist.” Hiding, ignoring, denying, imprisoning, bargaining away these parts of ourselves actually does the opposite.  Instead of staying hidden, these parts of ourselves come out sideways – often in non-loving behaviors toward ourselves or others.

If we do not confront our shadow and do the difficult work of bringing it to the light so that it can be healed (if necessary), transformed and re-integrated, then we will never be free. Without doing our shadow work, we will be forever condemned to “a life of quiet desperation” and our lives will amount to nothing because until we are free we will never know peace.

But herein lays the challenge. Few are willing to stand toe to toe with their own inner demons and even fewer have the courage to keep standing there until all their wounds are healed and they are truly free.  Instead, they would rather avoid the shadow work while chasing after shiny objects – the illusion of achievement, success, money, power, and fame.  In the meantime, their shadow is coming out sideways, hurting themselves and all the people around them.  In the end, what they resist will be their demise.

If you are reading this post, then congratulations, you have made another choice. You are the few.  You are the humble. You are the brave. It takes great courage, persistence and discipline to do shadow work – to stand toe to toe with all your past woundings, your self-defense mechanisms, your hidden anxieties and pains – to call forth all the parts of yourself you have denied, pushed away, swept under the rug, or from which you simply turned away because it was something you just could not love about yourself. It takes great courage to do this work.  In doing this work you have learned a magnificent truth – it is only in facing our shadow that we can bring forth our true light.  Welcome sisters and brothers!  I am humbled and honored to be sharing this journey with you.

Love,

Lauri

Into the Shadows with Gwyn ap Nudd

In this introduction to Gwyn Ap Nudd, King of the Tylwyth Teg (Fae) and Lord of the Underworld, you will come to understand his role as guardian of and guide through the shadows.  We enter into the shadow so that we can do the critical work of healing our unhealed wounds, while rediscovering, reclaiming and reintegrating the pieces of ourselves we have rejected, repressed or suppressed.  In order to become whole, shadow work is critical – though admittedly, not for the faint of heart.  Gwyn helps to guide us through and supports us in this task.

Lauri Ann Lumby, OM, OPM, MATS

A note from course creator, Lauri Ann Lumby, OM, OPM, MATS:

In late January into early February of 2008, over the feasts of Imbolc/Michaelmas and the Feast of St. Brigid, I made a pilgrimage to Glastonbury, England, otherwise known as Avalon.  It was here that I was initiated as a priestess of Gwyn Ap Nudd – Celtic (specifically Welsh) Lord of the Underworld.

Being made priestess of Gwyn was not of my choosing, neither was I ordained by human hands.  Instead, the initiation was presided over by Gwyn, himself – a god I had not previously known.  Neither had I invited Gwyn into my presence.  He simply stepped forth into my life, made himself known, and then led me into the world of my own shadow, a labyrinthine journey that seems to finally have come to some sort of closure, but only after many years of both profound bliss and excruciating struggle.

The journey into our shadow is never easy – but it always brings forth its reward – the reward being a more whole, fully integrated version of ourselves.  From the perspective of modern-day psychology, it is only by journeying into our shadow that we have any hope of becoming self-actualized, knowing the fullness of our gifts, conscious of our human limitations, and able to live through them both freely and unencumbered, thereby enjoying a life of meaning, fulfillment and joy. Gwyn’s job, as I have learned, is to help us accomplish this task – if we allow him.

Reflections on the 8/11/18 Partial Solar Eclipse

On August 11, 2018, a partial solar eclipse will take place, visible in parts of Canada, Greenland, northern Europe and Russia. Astrologers are noting this as an important eclipse in the transformation of human consciousness.  Below are my brief reflections on this upcoming eclipse.  (I’m not an astrologer, so I will not attempt to take away their thunder, but will speak of this more from a metaphorical/archetypal perspective.).

A solar eclipse takes place when the moon moves between the sun and the earth in its orbit. When this happens, from our visual perspective on the earth, the moon blocks the light coming to us from the sun, making the moon visible as it passes across the sun’s corona.  From the perspective of the moon and the sun, the moon casts a shadow over the earth, briefly casting affected areas in partial darkness.

In Western culture, the sun has represented our mind and our consciousness. The sun is the “giver of light” and to early cultures, the sun was their god.  The sun is most often thought of as masculine in nature in the way that it activates, motivates, and provides; providing the light and warmth we need to survive and to grow.  The sun makes things visible, therefore representing that which is external and that which can be seen, touched, felt, etc. The sun represents intellect, knowing, reason and logic – again, qualities we often think of as masculine.  The sun is the maker of and guardian of the day.  The sun is all that can be seen, and the sun represents our own face – that which we show to the world.

The moon, on the other hand, is the Queen of the night. To many cultures, the moon represented The Goddess or The Mother. Sometimes known as the “lesser sun,” the moon represents everything the sun does not.  The moon regulates our inner clocks, the tides of our inner lives, our cycles of procreation, our emotions and our intuition.  The moon is thought of as feminine and represents the receptive and more autonomic functions of our human nature.  The moon guards our sleep, our dreams, the times of rest which are necessary for growth to take place. The moon presides over that which takes place “in secret,” the patterns and times of growth and change that we cannot see, but can only feel.  The moon also represents those things over which we have no control – our natural bodily functions such as breathing, digestion and menstruation, for example – systems that simply function without our having to do anything about it.  The moon represents the things in our life that we cannot see, the hidden mysteries of life, and the things we keep close or guard as secrets.  The moon is the part of ourselves we hide from the world, along with the parts of ourselves we hide from ourselves! The moon represents the unknown and that which cannot (yet) be seen.  The moon also represents death – the natural and necessary ending to every life cycle, including our own.  While the sun highlights the world that is, the moon guards that which is in secret and that which has not yet come into being.

In ancient cultures, the sun and the moon were honored as equal, along with what they mutually represent. Ancient cultures understood the need for balance in life, in the way that the sun and the moon held equal sway over the day and the night, light and darkness.  The ancients understood that there was a time for planting, but there was also a time for rest and that an imbalance in either would cause an imbalance in their world and in their lives.  The ancients honored the Goddess as equal with the God and their societal structures reflected this.  Women and men were honored as equal, and their unique gifts honored as holy and sacred.  Intellect, logic and reason were balanced with intuition, discernment and wisdom.  Doing was balanced with being and speaking with listening.  In cultures where the sun and the moon, the active and the inactive, life as well as death, men and women were honored as equal, sacred and holy, the people lived in peace and harmony.

Such is no longer the case, but as we reconnect with the wisdom of nature, allowing nature to be our guide, we rediscover the keys to what the ancients knew. We then have the opportunity to apply this knowing into our own lives, supporting the transformation in human consciousness that we came here to witness and be a part of.

During a solar eclipse, the moon passes between the sun and the earth, momentarily blocking the sun’s light while casting shadows upon the earth. In metaphorical and archetypal terms, an eclipse is a time when the (perceived) feminine asserts her power  over the (perceived) masculine.  In a world where the masculine and archetypal masculine qualities (action, provision, competition, material success) have been favored over the feminine, an eclipse invites us to stop and take notice of what is missing in our world. Where have we ignored the feminine?  Where have we deprived her of her place and her own unique power?  Where have we favored the masculine over the feminine and what have been the negative results in our world of doing so?  As the moon’s shadow is cast upon the earth, we are invited to discover, explore and face all that is hiding in the shadows.  What are we trying to hide from the world?  What are we hiding from ourselves?  What are the secrets that need to be discovered and brought forth into the light?  What parts of ourselves have we suppressed, repressed, ignored, and what, including our gifts, needs to come forth into the light?

As the moon casts its shadow over the earth, temporarily blocking the full light of the sun, we are given a powerful time to explore our shadows in the bright light of day. A solar eclipse brings forth that which can no longer be hidden.  It is a time for secrets to be revealed and the consequences of repression and suppression to be made known.  An eclipse is a time for facing the truth and being invited into the process of dealing with that truth.  It is a time to confront our shadows – individually, culturally and as a world.  If you are one who has consciously and diligently tended to your shadow, the eclipse will be a time for rest.  There is no work to be done when we have already done our work.  For those whose shadows remain…..watch out….this one is going to be a doozie!
