Only for the Serious Student

If you’re here looking for shiny objects, or for me to make false promises of happiness, riches, wealth, fame, then please move along. No shiny objects here.  The work I do and I offer here for you is only for those who are truly serious about:

Coming to know themselves.

and being freed of the inner obstacles to living that truth.

This work is not easy and it doesn’t happen overnight. It also does not happen without your commitment, persistence, determination, courage and resilience.  This is the difficult and challenging work of peeling back all the layers of woundedness, fears, false perceptions, ego attachments and societal conditioning that for years (if not lifetimes) have held you back from fulfilling your Soul’s purpose on this plane.  Until we discover and support ourselves in living that purpose we will “live a life of quiet desperation,” forever searching for that something outside of ourselves that will make us feel whole, complete, peaceful and content (money, our soulmate, fame, power, money, the house, the car, the purse, etc. etc. etc.).

The difficult truth that our society doesn’t want us to know is that the satisfaction to this desperate longing is not to be found outside of us. It can only be found within.  This is the truth discovered by some of history’s greatest spiritual teachers – Moses, Jesus, Mary Magdalene, Mohammad, the Buddha, the Dalai Lama, Amma, etc.  This is the truth I support you in discovering and embodying within yourself – that place where you will know your truth – the truth that sets you free.

While this work is not for the faint of heart, my purpose in sharing this work is to support you on that journey. To provide the guidance, comfort, support, you need to complete this task.  I won’t do the work for you, but I will support you in doing this work and help you to move through the inner obstacles that might tempt you away from the only task that matters – coming to know yourself and living from that place of self-knowledge.  Only in knowing ourselves and our highest truth are we able to find contentment, peace, joy and fulfillment in the human journey.  It is for this very reason we chose to be human in the first place – so that we might come to know who we are.

While this work is not for the vain, I will further support you in knowing that those who come to this work and complete it are rare. As this morning’s scripture reflects:

The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks about earthly things. The one who comes from heaven is above all. He testifies to what he has seen and heard, yet no one accepts his testimony.  Whoever has accepted his testimony has certified this, that God is true. He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. John 3: 31-34

The gospel writer is referring to Jesus in this passage – one of the great spiritual teachers who came to know this truth. Who fulfilled his Soul’s purpose by coming to know himself and living that truth to its fullest.  The truth Jesus came to know was the truth of Oneness – that all are One in our Divine Source and that when we embody this truth in our human experiences, we find peace.  Jesus then went out to teach others how to experience this Oneness and in doing so, finding their own truth.

But Jesus did not make earthly promises. He didn’t promise riches, fame or power.  Instead, he spoke of “heavenly” things.  And very few listened.  As those who truly heard Jesus’ word and fulfilled it in their own life were rare – so shall you be.

If you’re looking for shiny objects, please move along. But if you are serious about the task of knowing yourself and living that to its fullest, here you will find welcome and support.

The Weight of Responsibility

As a first-born, Capricorn and recovering perfectionist, responsibility has always been my middle name. Whether imposed upon me (by command or circumstance) or simply chosen because it’s who I am; I have always been “the responsible” one.  Lauri can be counted on.  Lauri is honest.  Lauri has integrity.  Lauri is strong, courageous, a hard worker, efficient, and gets things done.  Lauri takes good care of others.  Lauri is responsible.  I would agree that all of this is true most of the time.  But there is a whole other layer of responsibility that I have felt beyond the day to day “getting things done.”  This is a worldly/cosmic/universal/ responsibility that I have never been able to give words to – until now.

This morning, on The Cosmic Path (www.thecosmicpath.com) this was offered as this week’s Capricorn horoscope:

There’s a huge planetary cluster of planets transiting your sign, and it’s the scene of the manifesting entry into the new order. What that means for you is that you are carrying within your energy field all the properties and archetypal energies that can truly deliver us all to the new Golden Age. It will take a good two years for all of this energy to produce the physical reality it is designed to bring forth, and just about every last one of the planets partaking of this grouping now will remain here for the duration. That means, put very simply, you know something huge is happening to you, and it’s absolutely positively futile to try and define something so vast and so unprecedented. You’ll have to stand back and watch it unfold like the rest of us, even though its manifesting in you.

Ummmmmm……Ohhhhhhhkaaaaayyyyyy! In one small paragraph Stephanie Azaria describes EXACTLY the weight I have felt my whole entire life.  I’m not here to have a normal Human 1.0 life.  I’m here to birth something new and it is actually birthing THROUGH me.  Holy Crap!

Now, before you accuse me of being all up in my ego for even believing such a thing….I can most certainly attest that this weight I have been feeling has absolutely nothing to do with ego. In fact, I just as soon join the rest of the world on the planet of denial, peacefully making love to my tonic and gin while discussing the latest fashion trends, than having to show up as a vehicle through which a new world is waiting to be born!  Even if said gin and tonic opportunities had ever come my way (which they HAVE NOT), I would not have been able to, and doubt I could choose them now.  Because EVERY SINGLE TIME I try to choose a “normal life” (you know:  normal job, normal relationships, normal life), it is absolutely and without a doubt refused to me.  And believe me….I have tried.  After 100 “real job” applications and not even getting a single phone call, I have surrendered.  After 100 dating sites and nothing but absolute epic fails, again, I quit.  I do not get a “normal life.”  Instead, it seems I have no choice but to continue slogging away at what I do best which is just being Lauri while helping people discover the love they are so that together we can create a new world.

But it is not nearly as simple as that! First off, I’m not getting rich doing this work. In fact, I’m filing bankruptcy while still wondering how I’m going to pay my basic bills this month…….all that while working 3 jobs! (3 if you include parenting which I most certainly do!) Second off, there is NO security in this work.  Human beings are fickle, and few really want to invest in themselves and fewer-still want to continue that investment if it means work.  Everyone wants the shiny object, the “feel good” yoo-rah-rah event or workshop, but very few want to do the hard work. And believe me, the task of healing our fears so that we can know love is HARD AS HELL.  (Isn’t that a great metaphor….for in a sense, we are transforming the hell in which we are living while bringing forth from within us heaven on earth – BOOM!)  Even fewer are willing to give up their attachments to what they know so that they can enjoy the only true freedom which comes from within.  So yeah….exactly why at the end of Jesus’ ministry there were only a few – Mary Magdalene, Mother Mary, Joseph of Arimathea, John the Beloved Disciple, Salome, and a couple other women.  The rest couldn’t handle the most difficult part of the journey which is DEATH. The death of what they had known so as to make room for something new.

And yet, this is EXACTLY what is happening, but now on an EPIC scale. Our world cannot continue if things remain as they are.  At the rate we are currently going, we will destroy ourselves – if the planet doesn’t do it to us first.  (For the record – the Earth always wins!  She will take back what is hers if we can’t learn how to care for it.  We are supposed to be the stewards of the earth….not its conquerors. )  And if it isn’t the planet we are destroying, it is ourselves.  As the rich keep getting richer and the poor keep getting poorer and as the middle class is quickly disappearing; as violence increases, wars on every continent, our children choosing death by suicide, etc. etc. etc. our world is imploding upon itself.   Those who are not benefitting from the current model based in fear, power and control, are longing for something else.  But the change we are longing for is NOT going to come from the top.  It will not come from those in power or from those who are reaping the rewards of a people oppressed.  Instead, it has to come from us – and that change can ONLY come from within.

And this is what I do. Every single day – first for myself – and then for others, I am helping us find ways to transform the fears that cause us to act in non-loving ways toward ourselves, toward each other and toward our planet and am turning those fears into love.  It is that simple, and yet it is also that profound.  The cost of this work is everything that is not in harmony with love – and for some that is a great price.  I know this because of what I have personally given up for the sake of that love.  But even as I stare (financial) death in the face, I can say it has been totally worth it because while there is much I have lost, there is even more that I have gained – and that is my SOUL. I know who I am.  I know what my Soul needs and wants.  Most of the time I am content and I feel at peace.  And most importantly – I know how to love – big, deep, and true.

But even with this, my work is not complete for there are still millions of human beings ACHING for something more. Today I understand that the “something more” is love and until the world knows this love, my Soul will never be satisfied.  THIS is the weight of the responsibility I have felt, perhaps since the day I was born.  Thank you Stephanie Azaria for giving words to what I could not, but have known full well in my heart!

Who are you….really?

Who are you? No, who are you really? This is the quintessential quandary of the human experience and one we spend a lifetime trying to answer.

I used to think I knew who I was:  strong, powerful, confident, craving attention, wanting to be seen, wanting to be famous, wanting to possess material wealth, accomplished, energetic, filled with the desire to take on the world so as to make it a better place, cultured, cosmopolitan, well-educated, articulate, independent, self-sufficient and able to do it all myself.

Then life happened.  Life has a funny way of doing that – stepping in to tear down the illusions of who we think we are so as to reveal who we really are.  When life happened, I learned that some of the above is true – some of the time.  I also learned a whole lot more about myself than I ever could have imagined would be true.

What I learned about myself is that I am courageous while at the same time mostly being scared shitless! As one teacher observed about me, “Lauri, I don’t know how you survive in the world except by force of will.”  She was not kidding.  I’m scared all the time, but somehow I get my ass out of bed, face the day and try to move through any demons that might be trying to stand in my way.  This must be one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit Paul forgot.

I’ve also learned that unlike the Lauri of my youth, I no longer crave attention. I don’t want to be famous, rich, or successful by Western standards.  I’m not looking to convince anyone of anything and I care not for other people’s approval (most of the time…..but when someone who doesn’t even know me condemns my gifts, criticizes my work or questions my integrity, my heart is broken – not because I give a shit about what the other person thinks, but because I know their words are untrue.)

Which brings me to this – VULNERABILITY!  I’m vulnerable!  Who knew?  Before “life happened” I thought I was bulletproof.  I believed I was a strong, impenetrable fortress.  Well, I was, but that fortress was built out of anger and resentment – both masking a broken heart.  Then life happened and the fortress came crashing down, and there I stood, alone, vulnerable, naked and afraid.  Sigh!  I’ve had to come to know, understand and accept my vulnerability.  I have also learned all the ways in which my vulnerability has taught me about myself.

My vulnerability taught me this:

I’m an introvert and I need quiet, solitude and time away from the world to recharge. And the older I get (or maybe the more I come to know myself), the more quiet I need.

I am sensitive. Sensitive to the energy of other people and to the world.  Where I used to feel energized by chaos, now I HATE IT!  I find chaos overstimulating, overwhelming, soul-sucking and in the face of it today, I want to shut down.  I have spent the vast majority of the past 25 years unraveling from a life built on chaos.  NO MORE!  I have worked really hard to create a quiet, gentle and peaceful life.  You can have your chaos, but please keep it to yourself! (PS  Same with drama!)

I am fragile and there are parts of me that are (likely) damaged beyond repair. Medication helps but there are somethings I can simply no longer do for myself. I’m also not sure I could ever return to “a real job” because of the sensitivities I am now coming to embrace.

I want only to move gently and quietly upon this earth.

I want to create and be creative. My creations (including my books, classes, one-on-one mentoring, creating a home that is a sanctuary, cooking healthy and nurturing meals, spending time with those I love) are my way of sharing and showing my love.

I want to simply be. To meditate and pray.  To send healing to the world.  To hold those I love in prayer.  To make every moment a prayer.  This is how I commune with the God of my understanding and the way I share that love in the world.

I want to enjoy – books, movies, theatre, dance, art, and music that inspire.

While I love the arts and all that big city life provides (I have often thought of myself as a city girl), I find now I crave the slow, quiet, gentle flow of the country – specifically where there are woods and water. (Lumby literally means, “man/woman of the woods”).

My vulnerability has also taught me the value of deep and true friendships. Having moved around a lot as a child, I never really experienced true intimate friendship – only brief friendships.  Then life happened and I have found true and deep friendships which I now cherish!

Then there are my children – another who knew!? My children have been the greatest gift in my life. They are my greatest teachers and have taught me sooooo much about myself – most especially that I am a damn good mom!  My children are my greatest accomplishment (if we can actually say that about our kids….I didn’t do anything, I just let them be themselves and I loved them unconditionally through it). At 19 and 21, they are proving themselves to be the most amazing human beings on this planet.  Each with their own gifts and challenges, I love them for who they are and celebrate all of it.  They make me laugh.  They bring me joy.  And every time I sit and reflect on who they have become my heart wants to explode.  I LOVE MY sick, twisted, hilarious, unique, too smart for their own good, mischievous, creative, thoughtful, kind, shit=disturbing children….who aren’t really children anymore. They are grown-ass adults!

My kids who aren’t kids anymore.

And I want love. Deep, true, intimate, whole hearted, mutually honoring love. My vulnerability has also taught me that if this kind of love is not meant to happen for me in this lifetime, I will have to be content with that while feeling the pain of knowing that one of my deepest longings is going unfulfilled.

Knowing who we are is not all wine and roses. And yet, it is the very reason for our human experience – to come to know who we are and in knowing who we are, discovering how we want to move and be upon this plane.  I am grateful for the Authentic Freedom process that revealed itself to me as “life happened” and forced me on this journey of self-discovery.  It is for this reason that I share this process with you here.

Which brings me to the question: WHO ARE YOU?

When Did You First Know?

Yesterday I had the profound gift of sitting with a dear friend who is healing after 6 months of INTENSIVE cancer treatment. We were talking about all the things you talk about when death is staring at you in the face.  In the midst of the conversation she asked me a question that will likely haunt me the rest of my life:

“Lauri, when did you first know?”

She was inquiring about the gift (which often feels like a curse) I have of seeing, hearing and feeling EVERYTHING that is happening in our world. Her question took my breath away, first, in revealing to me that she SAW and BELIEVED IN my gift.  Second, because I had never really thought to ask myself the same question.

When did I first know that I was seeing, hearing and feeling EVERYTHING?

When I sit with that question, the image that comes forth is me clinging to my mother’s pelvis as the doctors were ripping me by the foot from her womb. It seems I already knew what I would hear, see, feel and know and I wanted no part of it! (Interestingly, my daughter who shares this gift with me was also born breech.)

Seeing. Hearing.  Feeling. Knowing.  A gift as well as a curse.  But as my friend SAW and BELIEVED IN my gift, I felt the “cursed” part fall away and what was left was only the gift.  I felt this gift wash over me as a blessing….as a prayer….as a benediction.  I suddenly saw, heard, felt and knew the blessing this gift has been to me, and to those I serve.  Most obvious to me is the way this gift has supported me in seeing, hearing, feeling and knowing my children.  Knowing them in a way that has allowed me to avoid the temptation of crafting my children into something I think I want them to be.  Instead, I have supported them in being who they are.  I suspect for many of my students and clients I have done the same.

This gift has also allowed me to hold our world in love. I see, feel, hear and know the evil and pain in our world….and I feel it into the depth of my being.  It HURTS.  And yet, I know this is not who we are.  Beyond the hurt, the ignorance, the evil in the world, I see the pain and beyond the pain I see the love.  We are all on this planet trying to find our way home and the only way we can find our way home is through love.

Love has found its way to me through seeing, feeling, hearing and knowing EVERYTHING that is happening in our world. Love is finding its way to you through your own unique gifts. So I will ask you the same question asked of me by my friend:

When did you first know the gifts that you possess that are showing you the way to love?

Our Kids Are Not Alright!

This week, another one of my daughter’s classmates committed suicide. This young woman is the fifth in a graduating class of 200-some students to commit suicide.  Something here is wrong.  Very wrong.

suicidedespairpixabay

I want to begin by presenting what is NOT wrong. The problem is not the school(s).  Oshkosh schools are some of the best in the nation and while our governor keeps whittling away at our budget and other resources that support quality education, our schools have risen above the chaos and are providing the best possible education with the few resources that are left.  In addition, Oshkosh North, the school my children attend, offers a wide range of programs and services to help support their diverse population, many of which have been funded through grants and private donations. The community, teachers, staff and administration have advocated for our students beyond what the budgets would normally provide.

As a subparagraph of the problem not being the school – the problem is not bullying, neither is it a lack of support or counseling services for troubled students. The local schools have an extremely stringent anti-bullying policy and all ranges of diversity are not only honored, but advocated for.  Every school has counselors and social workers on staff who are there to support and advocate on students’ behalf.  The problem is not lack of support.

The problem is not a lack of suicide or mental illness awareness or support. While this may have been somewhat the case with the first two suicides, since that time, efforts, resources, advocacy has been RAMPED UP to educate parents, students, and the community on the challenges of mental illness and the signs of a child or adult in distress.  In addition, there are trained professionals in the community who work specifically to educate the public and to support families on suicide and to support families with a child or adult who is at-risk and to support families who have experienced a death due to suicide.

Finally, the problem is not the parents. I know the parents of some of these children and I can tell you, beyond the shadow of a doubt, these parents have done absolutely everything they could for their children.  They loved them.  They did the best they could to keep their children safe.  They got their children help when help was needed.  They got help for themselves when they were at a loss over how to further help their child.

The problem is not the schools, peers, the lack of mental illness awareness, or the parents.

The problem, and the reason our kids are not alright is:       Our world.

childgunpixabay

Our world is a mess. Our world is a mess for all of us – and for some of us, it is just too much to bear.  Let’s look at the facts:

  1. For as long as our children have been alive, THE WORLD HAS BEEN AT WAR.

If it’s not a conflict or a war with a name, (Desert Storm, Iraqi, Afghanistan, Israel and Palestine, etc. etc. etc.) it is “the war on terrorism.” And the worst of all the terrorist attacks have been accomplished right here on our own soil by our own U.S. citizens.  The media does not help in this regard by triggering our fears through sensationalism.  As my son said, “Hundreds of people a year are shot in Chicago and no one cares, but as soon as one guy gets shot in Oshkosh, the whole world is in a state of panic.”  (This also points to media and racial bias which is a topic for another blog another day.)

For our children – the world does not feel safe.

  1. In the U.S. success is determined by external measurements like money, status, power and fame. And some of these measurements are literal – how much money you make, how many time you are Tweeted or your Facebook post gets “liked,” if you have your own reality show or not, and do you measure up to the current standards of “beauty.” For those who do not know their true selves and who have no way of knowing themselves except in comparison to others, success feels like an impossible goal – especially when they look at the TRUTH of our economic situation – which brings me to #3
  2. Education does not mean what it used to. In the old days, a high school education was enough to prepare you for a regular job with a decent rate of pay. Then, college became the necessary gateway to a career, a paycheck and economic security. Then, a master’s degree became the gateway, then a PhD. Now….none of this really matters – and our children know this. A college degree guarantees you nothing, or as a friend of mine told her daughter, “Do what you love because there won’t be any jobs for you after college anyway.” Bleak, but true. As much as politicians are touting the economic recovery and that the “recession is over,” this is not the truth.
  3. The world as we know it is dying. Our children know this and they know that they will be the ones who will be creating the new world. For some, this is just too overwhelming a task. Imagine, for a moment, that you are a player in the Hunger Games and the entire world (as you have known it) crumbles at your feet and you are left with the task of building the new world. While the endless possibilities and the excitement of building something new is enticing for some, for others, it is overwhelming and feels impossible and they shut down under the burden of the task.
  4. And finally….this is the whoo whoo part…..our children are empaths. What this means is that not only are they feeling their own anxiety in the face of a world that is a mess, they are feeling EVERYONE ELSE’S anxiety. They feel the anxiety of their parents, their siblings, their classmates, their teachers, and the entire world around them. When there is a terrorist attack on the other side of the world, they feel it – maybe not consciously, but they feel it. When a weather system is moving through that will cause people anxiety, they know it – again, maybe not consciously, but they feel it. For those that don’t understand the gift of empathy and who don’t have tools for managing this gift, the emotions come out sideways – temper tantrums, disproportionate negative behavior, anxiety, depression – and you guessed it, suicide.

Which brings me full-circle. I don’t know what caused that young woman to jump off the bridge into a freezing and raging river to her death.  What I do know is that her death should not be in vain.  Her death should be another wake up call for us as parents, teachers, and other adults.

Our children are not alright!

childfathernaturepixabay

Our children need our help. While we cannot change the outside world, there are things we can do to help our children, and in helping them, find help for ourselves in a messy and broken down world:

  1. Lead them to resources to help them manage anxiety. Resources that have been proven to help manage anxiety include: meditation, mindfulness, regular exercise, a healthy diet, adequate and deep sleep, creativity exercises, being in nature, being with others in healthy community interactions.
  2. Support them in knowing their TRUE selves. Self-knowledge increases self-esteem, confidence, and the ability to be ok with our differences in a world of great diversity, and to weather the storm of other people’s judgements.
  3. Help them develop a different set of values. This starts with us. We need to stop valuing ourselves in terms of money, fame, status, power, and physical characteristics. What we are wearing, whose bag we are carrying and what car we are driving DOES NOT MATTER. These external measurements of “success” or “popularity” do not give us happiness. In fact, all they do is create more ANXIETY. If we want our children to be comfortable in a world that will NOT have the resources in which everyone can be a Kardashian, we have to help them find value in the internals – peace, contentment, joy, and fulfillment in knowing and exercising their gifts. We then need to give them tools for finding this inner peace which leads us back to items 1 and 2.
  4. Support them in their dreams. Our children see and know the new world. They see a world that is free from the separation with which we have defined the world. Instead of separation, they see only oneness. They do not comprehend the separation we keep placing between ourselves and others we view as different from us and they definitely do not comprehend the violence that arises out of these perceived separations. Our children do not see race, religion, sexual orientation, or even gender as barriers, they only see this as the miraculous and amazing diversity among human beings and they seek to know more and to honor these differences. Let’s get out of the way and let them do this, shall we!?
  5. Teach them what to do with Empathy.  Empaths are healers and those with this gift (all of our children) possess this gift because they are here to heal our dying world so that a healthier and happy world can emerge. Our children need to know what to do with these feelings and how to stop taking responsibility for everyone else’s pain. Interestingly, this also brings us back to items 1 and 2.

While we cannot change the world, we can change the world in which we are living and the journey starts within. Let us join together to help our children, and in helping our children, helping ourselves so that we can survive in a world in the midst of change and through our children’s dreams, help to support the birth of a new and better world. Then perhaps these children would not have died in vain.

CHANGEMAKERS WAKE UP. It’s time to make a new world!

(Psst……Song of the Beloved, the Gospel According to Mary Magdalene is available NOW.  Check it out HERE.)  Now on to today’s blog!

Have you felt like you were here for a reason, but perhaps didn’t know what that reason was?  Do you feel like you are here to change the world, but you don’t know how?  Have you struggled to fit in, often feeling like you were very different from the people you know (and even your family)?  Have you felt somewhat alone with in these thoughts? If so….YOU ARE NOT ALONE.  In fact, you are in really good company, there are lots of other people like you, we are finding each other and we are getting ready to CREATE A NEW WORLD!

Changemakers

Who are the changemakers?  If you are reading this blog, you are likely a changemaker (aka superhero, shitdisturber, rebel, discontent, mystic, starchild, starseed, starborne) and you are in really good company.  Changemakers are those who were born with the inherent gifts and a deep inner call to make the world a better place.  If you are a changemaker, you probably know it…..and WE NEED YOUR HELP because the world as we know it is coming to an end (THANK GOD!) and a new world is waiting to be born!

Politics and End times

If the most recent election is any sign of approaching end times, I don’t know what is.  Positions purchased by corporations.  The whole thing is rigged.  We no longer have a government by the people, for the people.  Instead, we have a government by greedy corporations for the sake of greedy corporations and we don’t need to look very far to see who benefits from this arrangement – healthcare corporations, academic institutions, pharmaceutical companies, Big oil, agricultural companies who are trying to make us sick (if not dead) through the alteration of our food stocks.  Big business benefits and the politicians who are in their pockets while the rest of the country is sick, unemployed and dying.  Something has to change!

Enter the Changemakers

We are a small voice, but we are getting louder.  No longer content to be obedient and do what we are told.  No longer content to live in a world of fear.  No longer content to watch our brothers and sisters toil away in crappy jobs for poverty wages.  No longer yearning after “The Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous,” or wanting what we see on MTV Cribs.  Tired of watching education, healthcare and government flushing themselves down the toilet as we get dumber, sicker and poorer.  Changemakers know it is TIME FOR A NEW WORLD!

The Key to Creating Change

The key to creating change, for making a new world is SELF KNOWLEDGE!  When we come to know ourselves – our TRUE SELVES – we know how we are uniquely gifted to not only find fulfillment in our own lives, but how we are called to contribute to the creation of the New World.  We grow in self- knowledge by being open to this search, and by finding the right kind of support.  This is where I come in.  During a recent gathering of the Superhero Academy,   I was reminded of my own unique giftedness and call – to Awaken, Equip and Empower CHANGEMAKERS (aka Superheroes).  I accomplish this task through writing (blogs, inspirational newsletters and books), one-on-one mentoring, classes and workshops.  If you are interested in harnessing your desire to MAKE A NEW WORLD, and haven’t acted yet, call (920) 230-1313 or email lauri@yourspiritualtruth.com today to start that journey.  We need your help in CREATING a new world!

Knowing Ourselves

Last Thursday I had the amazing opportunity to attend a day of reflection with poet David Whyte.  In the spirit of that day, I have dusted off an old poem that I wrote about our journey to discover ourselves.  As you read this poem, reflect on who you know yourself to be and how you have discovered this.

The Woman I Know Myself to Be

The Woman I know myself to be,

Created by God, in persons three.

Holy Spirit, feminine Divine

Creator God, your breath is mine.

Christos, human actualized,

the journey, fully realized.

Within my heart, the truth be told,

denying  lies that I have been sold:

“Unworthy of another’s love,

in sin created, not of God above.

It is never enough, whatever you do,

and how could anyone really love you?

If they knew the truth of the woman you be,

then surely they would turn and flee!

Not perfect, no matter how hard you try!”

Encased in my body, living the lie.

But through the years and through the tears,

I have sorted out these fears,

and deep within the muck and grime,

I have discovered the truth sublime.

Beauty is my name you see.

Joy the dance inside of me.

Created in and of God’s love,

God within, not from above.

Never separate, always one,

To this truth, I have come.

The Woman I know myself to be,

is made of love, not sin you see.

Beautiful, wise, intelligent, kind;

a loving mother, you’ll surely find.

Compassionate, tender, silly and fun,

Passionate, sexy, smile bright as the sun.

Strong, yet vulnerable, healthy in mind,

admitting to weakness, accepted as fine.

The wounded healer I know me to be,

living life’s lessons, the truth set me free.

I am singer, dancer, writer and friend,

student, creator, to thee prayers I send.

Love and joy, the breath that made me,

know that this is too what made thee.

Created in the image of God,

belief in less –  illusion and fraud.

Divine is what we truly be,

if we but live authentically.

Seeking God above all else,

toasting to the growing wealth

of abundant promises discovered true –

All of this is made for you!

Realizing faith defined,

owning the truth in body and mind:

One not two or three or four,

love alone unlocks the door.

Believing the promise of Creator Divine:

“I love you and you are mine.”

A Far Reaching Vision

Are you looking for meaning, purpose or connectedness in your life?  Are you desiring to know yourself, to discover your unique gifts and your contribution in the world?  Do you seek to know your Source, your Origin, where you came from, who made you, how you got here and why?  This blogs for you!

Churches Are Dying

It is unanimous.  Churches….even the mega-non-denominational-evangelical churches are now recognizing it.  (see this article from InternetMonk) Churches are dying.  Of course everyone has their theories as to why this is true.  And this is mine:  Because most churches are not meeting the deepest longing of the human heart which is to:

  • Know ourselves
  • Know God
  • Know our gifts and how we are called to share them in the world.

In other words…..we want meaning and purpose in our lives.  We want connection.  And most importantly…..we want to know LOVE.  And…..in my personal experience, we do not get any of this through things that come from outside of us such as doctrine, dogma, the Catechism, Canon law, Papal infallibility statements, etc.  The only place we can find ourselves, God and our gifts is INSIDE of us.  While we might recognize the Presence and Action of God in the external circumstances of our lives……and while we might give honor to the God that we know through worship and ritual, we don’t really know God until we experience God in our hearts.  And that only comes from going within.

The Inner Journey

This process of going within, this process that leads us to the answers to the questions of the heart is called Spiritual Formation.  Unlike Religious Formation which teaches doctrine, dogma, laws, morals, rules, history, attempts to define God and to define God’s mind, etc; Spiritual Formation goes straight to our hearts.  Spiritual Formation provides us with the tools through which we are able to come to know ourselves, come to have our own personal experience of God, helps us to identify our gifts and to find healing from the fears and unhealed wounds that would otherwise prevent us from nurturing and sharing our gifts in the world.  Spiritual Formation is healing, empowering, motivating, supportive, honoring, liberating and expansive.  Unlike Religious Formation which is unique to each belief system,  Spiritual Formation is universal.  It doesn’t matter what faith you believe in….or if you even have a faith, every single human being on this planet experiences at some time in their lives, the longing to find meaning, purpose and connectedness.  Spiritual Formation provides the tools for that discovery.

Help for Those Still Searching

The Authentic Freedom process for Spiritual Formation provides a tool that can be accessible to ANYONE and brings people together instead of causing more separation.  As churches are dying and people are wandering around in search of that which will fulfill the longing of their hearts…..Authentic Freedom provides an answer…..or at least a way to get there because ultimately, the answer is within us….just waiting to be made known.  Authentic Freedom provides the tools that help us open to those answers.

The Vision

The vision is this:  Trained Authentic Freedom Facilitators in places all around the world, sharing, facilitating, empowering people with these tools.  I currently have eleven men and women who are standing at the gate ready to start their facilitator’s training.  Once their training is complete and upon our mutual agreement, these facilitators will be empowered to go out into their own communities and share this curriculum with others.  The best thing about all of this is that is fulfills my NUMBER ONE goal as a spiritual teacher and the mantra I have repeated over and over and over in my almost twenty years in ministry:

“I am not here to make more students.  I am here make teachers.”

My Invitation to You

Here is my invitation to you.  If any of the above resonates with you. If you read this and are getting a little flutter in your heart.  If your ears perk up when you contemplate this blog,  consider becoming an Authentic Freedom Facilitator.  For more information on the process and how you might become involved, click HERE.    And……if as you read this your mind is filled with doubts: I don’t know enough.  I don’t have enough background or knowledge in scripture or energy medicine.  I don’t know how to teach.  I am not worthy.  I couldn’t possibly do this.  THEN CALL ME……because chances are if you are having these doubts…..you really ARE BEING CALLED to consider this opportunity.  🙂

Introverts and Perfectionists

Today’s blog is about process…specifically, the unique processing timeline of an introvert…..compounded by the standard of integrity embraced by the perfectionist.  And….I know I’m not the only one like this out there!  🙂  If you think you might be an introvert, or know someone who is…you might want to read this…..and if you think you might be a perfectionist…or know of someone who is.

To Thine Own Self Be True

As we mature and grow spiritually (and emotionally), we come to understand more fully who we are – what makes us tick, how we move through the world, our values, how we process life, what we need in the way of help and support, etc.   For me, there are two significant nuggets of self-knowledge that have proven to be critical in my ability to stay healthy and grounded in the human experience.

1)  is the knowledge that contrary to popular opinion…..I AM AN INTROVERT.  While I have learned to be outgoing and have taken the time to cultivate many acquaintances and friendships, I really find my most life-giving experiences in either being alone or in the context of one-on-one, intimate and personal experiences.

2) I am a perfectionist (in recovery…but a perfectionist, nonetheless)

Coming to understand these two things about myself has given me remarkable tools, but even more importantly, affirmation and validation for the unique ways that I process, or move through, the challenges of the human condition.  For those who do not live within the unique giftedness of the perfectionistic introvert, these methods of process can stir up feelings of impatience, frustration and even anger.  Introverted perfectionists move VERY SLOWLY in their process…and with good reason – for ourselves and for the good of those around us.

Integrity and the Perfectionist

Being a perfectionist can be a huge pain in not only our own butts, but the butts of those around us.  Until self-awareness, healing and integration takes place, the perfectionist can be self-righteous, morally rigid, judgemental, condemning, critical.  (ok, these can still linger….even after an enormous amount of healing!)  I have been frequently known to climb up on my soapbox of some social, religious, political issue and pontificate about what “should” be done….because of course I am perfect and I know better!  Once the layers of unhealed wounds and the rigid armor of self-defense is relaxed, however, the perfectionist can see that ultimately what drives us – both motivations and compulsions – is the desire to stand in integrity.  Standing in integrity means to discover, name, claim and stand firmly in our own truth….and to do so from a place of impecibility…..in other words….we strive to know our sh..t  and to clearly differentiate that from our fears, projections, etc.  That way, we can stand in “this is mine” and “this is yours” and step out of our temptation to blame, shame, condemn, etc.  Doing this allows the perfectionist the inner peace and contentment that frequently eludes us.  When we can unravel ourselves from judgment of self and others, this is where we find peace.  The challenge to this goal of integrity, however, is that it is VERY SLOW….and the perfectionist must often journey through the dark and dangerous forest of our fears and compulsions before getting to the clarity on the other side.  The journey can get pretty ugly…but the destination is MAGNIFICENT – clear, free from judgment and peacefully content.

Now Throw in the Introvert

As I just stated above, the perfectionists journey toward integrity is one that can be arduous and slow.  Now….mix in the temperment of the introvert.  Now you have molasses on a cold, winter day.  SLOW SLOW SLOW.  Introverts need TIME to process.  Introverts need TIME to get in touch with what they are really feeling.  Introverts need time to be present to these feels and discover their deeper roots.  Introverts need time to find the quiet…both outside and inside of them that will give them the TIME they need to hear their deepest truths, uncover guidance and direction…and they need time to say yes to this guidance and to discover the proper vehicle through which they can travel that path.  Introverts need TIME!

Help for Ourselves and the People in Our Lives

Why does any of this matter?  Because….we live in an extroverted world that wants everything NOW.  We want resolution.  We want closure.  We want commitment.  We want immediate gratification. We want surety of knowledge and direction.  We want it and we want it now.  Well guess what….for the perfectionistic introvert….this will NEVER be the case!  This is helpful knowledge if we are a perfectionistic introvert because it gives us permission to honor our own uniquely SLOW process and to not give into the impatience and pressure of an extroverted culture.  This is also helpful knowledge for us to share with those around us (those that will listen anyway), because if our temperments differ (which they will), tension will arise due to these differences.  When we are able to clearly name the needs unique to our temperment and allow those around us to name theirs, then we can negotiate a space in which we can each be present to our own unique process and give honor and respect to the other while we negotiate the bumpy terrain of interpersonal communication.   So, for those introverted perfectionists out there…..I invite you to name and claim your needs for time…..patience…..and still more time and to be ok doing so.  And, know that you are NOT alone!  And to the extroverts who are in relationship with an introvert…..BREATHE!  🙂

How do you process the challenges of your life?

Where are you being invited to name and claim your need for process time?

How might your interpersonal relationships benefit from your own emerging self-knowledge?
