When Our Shadows Come Out to Play

(“Duck those Ducking Duckers!”)

The deepest, most exquisite part of my gift to the world is my ability to work in and with the shadows – the pain, sorrows, traumas, fears and other areas of woundedness we try to hide from the world and from ourselves.  In order to do this work with and for others, I first have to do it for myself.  As life continues to remind me, our shadow work is never done.  Even when we think we have sufficiently grieved a loss, healed a trauma, released a pain, there are remnants of it that will remain, waiting to surface again (most often when we least expect it) for another layer of healing.

Yesterday, I found myself in that place. An innocent article appeared on Facebook, an article I had seen a million other times, about Reiki being offered in hospitals.  I don’t know why yesterday was different from any other day, but I read the headline of that article and I LOST IT!  Are you kidding me?  Reiki in hospitals?  Knowing that at least half of the hospitals in the United States are run by the Catholic Church, I found myself enraged.  Not because Reiki might now be available in Catholic hospitals (hurray) but because of the local self-appointed inquisition, the local Church and the local bishop and his cronies who made my life a living hell all because of Reiki.  In my rage (grief) I posted on FB, “If Reiki is being offered in Catholic hospitals too, there are several bishops and members of the local self-appointed inquisition who owe me an apology and maybe some financial consideration for the hell they put me through!”  And I meant it!  Those duckers made my life a living hell and the PTSD I now bear is partly because of the soul wrenching pain I experienced due to their ministrations and constant harassment. The result of my “run in” with the Church was my leaving and wondering if karma was ever going to have its way with those ducking duckers. The truth I came to yesterday is “not likely.”  “They” will go on living in their self-righteous, fundamentalist interpretation of Catholic teaching, making themselves and the people around them miserable with their constant scrutiny, while I am walking around free.

……and……there it is.  I’m free. I am free of the outside perceived authority of the Church and the laws that men created to strike fear in the hearts of human beings so they could be manipulated and controlled.  Fear of hellfire and damnation no longer plague my life.  I no longer fear a jealous or angry “god.”  I am no longer looking over my shoulder wondering if I am adequately upholding Catholic teaching so that my entrance into heaven might be assured.  I am no longer running from the “snares of the devil” as “Satan” and I have become friends.  (for more on why Satan isn’t who “he” was made out to be read HERE).  And finally, I no longer fear death.  When my time comes, I will greet Death as a welcome friend.  I no longer fear death because when we free ourselves from the illusion of hell and the threat of eternal punishment, in death there is nothing to fear.  This has been my “reward” for staying true to the Divine calling of my Soul, while those who continue to threaten and harass are imprisoned by their fear.

I share this story as an example of WHY I do what I do and WHY it is imperative that we meet our shadows face to face.  Our shadows surface, not to haunt us or cause us pain, but to lead us to freedom.  Every time our shadows come out to play, when we meet them (instead of running from them) and when we allow ourselves every single emotion and thought that accompanies them (ie:  “duck those ducking duckers”) we find our way to freedom and release.  It is only in being present to our pain that we can find its release.  It is only in being present to our wounds and facing the tragedies of our past that we can be freed to walk the path of our truth.

If you are looking for assistance in navigating the path of your shadows, I am available for one-on-one mentoring and there are several course offerings which support the journey through the shadows.

The Benefits of Using Authentic Freedom with Reiki

Reiki is one of many modalities of energy medicine incorporating hands-on-healing or the laying on of hands for the purpose of supporting the body in returning to its natural state of wellbeing. With knowledge of the Authentic Freedom process, a Reiki practitioner can greatly enhance the benefits of a traditional treatment, both for their client and for themselves.

Reiki, hands on healing, laying on of hands, Reiki and Authentic Freedom,

How Reiki Works

Using light, non-invasive touch in conjunction with the energy centers of the body (chakras), Reiki supports the body in releasing blocks to wellness and in returning to its natural state of energetic balance, thereby supporting the body in returning to its natural state of wellbeing. When the life force energy (Ki) is flowing freely, the body will reflect this in healthy vitality. Stagnation in the life force energy manifests in illness and disease.  Knowledge of the chakras, along with their physical correspondences assist the Reiki practitioner in identifying where the body’s Ki (life force energy) is not flowing so they may further assist their clients in releasing these blocks. Reiki works not only on the physical, but also on the emotional, mental and spiritual level – acknowledging that the source of many states of dis-ease is related to issues on these deeper levels of experience.  In traditional Usui Reiki training, the practitioner is taught the standard protocol for hands-on-healing with the invitation to know and trust that whatever healing is appropriate for the client’s highest good will be taken care of on any of the aforementioned levels.

Read my response to the Catholic Bishops’ prohibition against Reiki HERE.

Integrating Authentic Freedom with Reiki

Authentic Freedom adds an additional layer to the support a Reiki practitioner may offer their clients. Authentic Freedom provides knowledge and tools for working with clients on the deepest spiritual level – most often the truest source of emotional, mental and physical imbalance.  By supporting clients on the spiritual level the practitioner is going straight to the source of dis-ease.  Additionally, knowledge of the Authentic Freedom philosophy provides the practitioner with tools they are able to share with their client which the client may then employ for on-going healing and support.  This approach saves time and effort in the healing process while supporting the client in the experience of enduring change.

How Authentic Freedom Enhances Reiki

Using the seven chakras as a point of reference, Authentic Freedom has identified the seven spiritual fears/wounds which are at the heart of many (if not most) emotional, mental and physical states of dis-ease. When a Reiki practitioner is able to support their client in tracing back their physical, emotional or mental symptoms to the corresponding spiritual fear/wound, awareness takes place and the first layer of healing is accomplished.  Identifying the true source of imbalance (or as I call it, “naming the demon”) is the first step in authentic healing.  From that point, the Reiki practitioner supports their client in letting go of this fear through hands-on-healing.  With Authentic Freedom, however, the healing doesn’t end with the table treatment.  Authentic Freedom includes a wide variety of mindfulness, meditation and creativity practices which the Reiki practitioner may prescribe for their client so that they may continue and deepen the healing on their own.

Incorporating Authentic Freedom with Reiki accelerates the healing process by getting to the deepest source of imbalances while providing the practitioner and the client with tools for on-going and enduring healing and support.

To learn more about the Authentic Freedom process, read my book Authentic Freedom – Claiming a Life of Contentment and Joy or enjoy the benefit of personal instruction in this protocol through my online course.

A Witch! A Witch!

Responding to the Catholic self-appointed inquisition.

Just when I think I am off their radar and free of the wrath of the Catholic self-appointed inquisition, they rear their fearful head. This morning as I was enjoying a glimpse of the new and expansive opportunities that are coming my way, not the least of which is the pending release of my new book – Union – a year of spiritual lessons and practices with Mary Magdalene, this shows up in my email.  Not one….but two emails from the same individual spewing their wrath:

You wicked evil christian. You thought you could deceive me and lead me to believe you really discern spirits when in fact you said it led you to practice Reiki, an occult practice forbidden for Catholics.

The Lord rebuke you. It sickens me you practice Reiki.

Your charism is not from God. The occult practices indicate otherwise. What I don’t understand is why mix catholicism with the occult?

Even if you have the charism, I know you are not in the truth because you are an occult practioner who is doing what is forbidden by Catholic practice. What happened to you…

I’m really saddened to see that you practice the occult because if you really do have the charism of discernment, The Church and people really do need it and not mixed with occult practices…

Normally, I would not give any energy or attention to emails such as these, but today, I find myself particularly annoyed, not because of their words, but because of the larger message behind these words which is:

If you are a woman who happens to be doing the work that Jesus did, you are evil, wicked, doing the work of Satan and condemnable as a witch.

As it relates to being a witch, I wear that mantle proudly for to me being a witch means:

  • Dedicating my life in service to the Divine and in support of the betterment of our world.
  • Emptying myself so as to be a vessel through which the Divine might be known in our world through my own unique gifts.
  • Allowing the Divine to work through my spiritual gifts of discernment, teaching, encouragement, leadership, pastoring, prophecy and healing to transform our world from fear into love.
  • Engaging in ritual practices for the purpose of concretizing my commitment to God which then act as efficacious signs of grace…by which divine life is dispensed to us (ref. Catholic Encyclopedia).
  • Strengthening my commitment to God and to the mission of love through daily meditation, contemplation and prayer.
  • Being of service to others as a source of love in all things.

I see none of what I do as contrary to the Christian message, most especially as this message was modeled by Christ. Jesus taught.  He prophesied.  He counseled. He meditated and prayed. He performed ritual.  He led.  He pastored.  He laid on hands for the purpose of healing, expelling demons (fears) and to empower those he taught to do what he had done.

It wasn’t only men whom Jesus empowered to continue his work. The FIRST ordained to continue Jesus’ work was Mary Magdalene (John 20), and she was a woman!  Sadly, the early response to Mary Magdalene’s role as successor to Jesus was ridicule, condemnation and slander.  She immediately went from being Jesus’ co-equal partner, the one who first saw the risen Christ and the one sent forth to share the good news, to adulterous woman, prostitute, whore….in other words….a witch.  What happened to Mary Magdalene two hundred centuries ago has been the burden inflicted upon all women thereafter who have attempted to do what Jesus did and be whom he called them to be.  The message has been clear:

If you are woman called to do the work of Christ, you are not welcome and we will enforce this ban by calling you a witch, a heretic, a whore, a blasphemer, who does this work in the company of Satan.

While it would be easy for me to get on my feminist bandwagon, I find here that I cannot as these accusations of being in the company of Satan go beyond gender. In fact these are the exact same accusations heaped upon Jesus by the self-appointed inquisition of his own time:

When Jesus had driven out a demon, some of the crowd said: “By the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he drives out demons.” Others, to test him, asked him for a sign from heaven. But he knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste and house will fall against house. And if Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that it is by Beelzebul that I drive out demons. If I, then, drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own people drive them out? Therefore they will be your judges. But if it is by the finger of God that I drive out demons, then the Kingdom of God has come upon you. When a strong man fully armed guards his palace, his possessions are safe.

But when one stronger than he attacks and overcomes him, he takes away the armor on which he relied and distributes the spoils. Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

Luke 11: 15-26

Apparently ANYONE who tries to do the work that Jesus did is vulnerable to condemnation. When I pierce through the veil of these accusations I see one thing:

Fear – specifically, the human fear of that which is outside of our control.

Catholic (and most religious) doctrine, wraps life up in a tight little ball. We are told what to believe, what not to believe, what is good and what is evil. Theologians might have the freedom to argue about these beliefs, but the common person sitting in the pew is expected to believe without question. For many, believing without question provides the perceived surety they crave in an otherwise unsure world. The problem is that life CANNOT be wrapped up in a tight little ball for us to control. The truth is there is very little we truly know and even less that we can control. Those who have been called beyond these tightly defined parameters, who are comfortable in the world of the unknown, where life embodies many shades of grey and where freedom is found in ambiguity become a threat to those who cling to the illusion of surety. To the latter, it is easy to think of the former as evil as our presence stirs their fears and the unhealed wounds that cause them to cling to what they think they know. Witches….shit-disturbers, we might be one and the same. J

While my initial response to the emails above was annoyance and my second response was hurt, I can now sit in the compassion of understanding the fears that caused this person to lash out in this way. I am sorry for the unhealed fears that cause them to seek after surety. I am sorry for the fact that my presence has triggered these fears. But even more so I am sorry that they chose not to use the tools that Jesus gave them to heal those fears so that instead of finding separation, they might have found the love that unites us both. In this, there are no witches, there is no inquisition, there are only human beings trying to find peace in an otherwise fearful world.

Confessions of a Catholic Witch

I have always known I was a witch. For 364 days a year, however, I simply pretended I was not.   Only on Halloween as I donned my black robe, black pointy boots and a black did I feel completely at home.  For the remaining days of the year, I felt like a fake….sort of….for if there is one place where a witch is at home (until she is found out that is), it is in the Catholic Church.

lauricurtsie2

Nowhere else, among all of the western religions, is magic as prevalent as it is within Catholicism. Where else can a man utter the phrase “hocus pocus” (hoc est corpus meum) and turn the simple elements of bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ, or through the imposition of hands release a person from “the devil’s” grip?

The smells, the bells, the little altars everywhere, the haunting strains of Latin chant, the saints to whom I could pray to remedy any struggle or ill, and the votive candles that I lit to solidify my intentions bring my dreams to fruition – all spoke to the witch inside of me who knew the world was magic and that magic could be brought forth in the world. Magic in its truest sense – the Divine working through us in support of the love within that is seeking its place in the world.

The Goddess knew what she was doing when I was born into a devout Catholic family – one that had been Catholic for many generations. She knew what she was doing when she planted me within the single western religion that honors the worship of both a male and a female God. (While Jesus’ mother, Mary, is not officially recognized as a goddess by the Catholic Church, people sure treat her as if she were.  Wouldn’t one have to be a goddess to be the “Mother of God?”)  She knew what she was doing when she placed me within the only western tradition that recognizes the use of amulets (saint medals, scapulars and rosaries), magical potions (holy water and anointing oils), incense and salt for keeping evil at bay.

darkgoddessaltar-jpg

Being a Catholic witch has not been easy, however, which is why I have hid my truth for all these fifty-one years. While I was drawn to everything that speaks magic within the Catholic Church, in being a witch, I also saw through the lies, the deception, and the subtle ways in which the Church manipulated people through fear.  At a very early age, I became aware of the hypocrisy within the Church and was not afraid to call it out.  As an adult, I have maintained this practice and there is a big file in our local Catholic diocese with my name on it to prove it.  Apparently the Church is not interested in those who see through the mask of piety and the illusion of holiness.

It was ultimately this hypocrisy that caused me to leave the Church I once adored – all because I dared to study and practice Reiki. It is apparently ok for a priest to practice laying on of hands in support of a person’s desire for healing, but Goddess-forbid a lay person, OR WORSE, a woman should do the same.  By a Church that claims it is not doing magic in turning bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ, or in healing the sick through the imposition of hands, it was of witchcraft and sorcery I was accused and then condemned for doing “the work of the devil.”  Me thinkest they protesteth too much!

Because I no longer feel welcome in the local Church which has effectively burned me at the stake, I have chosen for the past eight years to fast from the Eucharist. This does not mean, however, that I ever stopped being Catholic – more importantly, a Catholic witch.  I heal the sick through the imposition of hands.  I ordain women and men into their own giftedness (magic) and send them forth into the world where their magic can be shared.  I baptize people into the love that they are and confirm them into being that love in the world.  I hear people’s confessions – and absolve them of their “sin” by helping them to heal the deeper inner fears that cause their addictive and non-loving behaviors.  I sit with people in the pain of grief and prepare them for their death.  I preside over weddings and funerals.  I provide spiritual nourishment through the Eucharist that is within each and every one of us when we allow ourselves to BE the Body and Blood of Christ.

For living out my call in this way, you could call me priest, or priestess, but as it was in the most ancient traditions, and in response to the accusations against me, I prefer to be called a witch.

Testimonials from Lauri’s clients:

I had been to counselors on and off for 10 years and Lauri hit the bulls eye during our first session; after our second session, the grief that plagued me for over 10 years was gone, as it was my soul that needed recognition and healing – prior counselors only addressed the “mind”; Lauri helped me holistically.  As a result, I am me again.  I am whole, and I embrace life.    KU  Oshkosh

I have had the pleasure of attending all of Lauri’s classes as well as receiving personal spiritual direction/counseling.  Her ability to actively listen, assist you in plumbing the depths of your own heart and mine the gold that is deep inside of you allows you to find your own path to healing.  Lauri doesn’t tell you how to feel or think, but allows you to savor your own truth!          Linda S.  Oshkosh

After my thirty-five year relationship suddenly and unexpectedly ended, I sought Lauri’s help in dealing with the all-consuming grief, fear, anger, despair and confusion.  Lauri provided a safe haven where I was able to face the truth about myself, my life and my relationship.  This has been tremendously healing, empowering and freeing.  Lauri’s presence and influence in my life has been a deeply profound gift for which I will be eternally grateful.          Diane K.  Oshkosh

Authentic Freedom helps me everyday to overcome my fears and doubts and to move forward.  Lauri is wonderful at helping me think through my insecurities.  I do things more now from my own intuition rather than what “everyone else” does or tells me to do.   I am more at peace because I have less struggle with the ego and know that the Divine is always there to take care of me.  I just need to listen.     Debbie S.  Neenah

I was in a point in my life where I was at a cross roads. I had an idea of what to do but still questioned the answer and myself, Lauri helped me to find clarity and make an effective decision.     MS  Oshkosh

With Lauri’s insightful guidance, I was able to understand my motivations better, and work towards replacing old, habitual and destructive thoughts and behaviors with new, life-giving ones that better revealed my authentic nature.     MS  Fond du Lac

Lauri was my guiding light through some very trying personal losses.     PG  Oshkosh

I have gotten more help in a shorter amount of time from Lauri Ann Lumby ‘s classes and counsel than from other counselors. Wonderful ~   Janet S. Oshkosh

The Order of the Magdalene

The Order of the Magdalene, founded by Lauri Ann Lumby, OM, MATS, is a community of women and men who have been called to continue the work Jesus began of turning the world from separation and fear into oneness in love.

Mary Magdalene by Dana Lumby
Mary Magdalene by Dana Lumby

The Order is named for Mary Magdalene – Jesus’ closest disciple, the only one identified to have completed the full course of Jesus’ teachings and initiated as co-equal partner and Beloved. It was to Mary whom Jesus first revealed his resurrected/Christed Self (it may, in fact, been through Mary’s intervention that Jesus was raised from the dead), and it was Mary he commissioned to share the good new with the other disciples and to continue his work in his stead.  We do this work in her name in the hopes that doing so will awaken the world to the truth of Mary’s role in Jesus’ ministry and life, thereby restoring 2000 years of defamation at the hands of a patriarchal, hierarchical Church, further undoing the harm done to women specifically and the feminine in general.  In restoring the Holy Feminine to the Jesus story, we also create the space in which the Holy Masculine can reclaim its place in our world, thereby supporting the world in the returning to its original nature in oneness, harmony, peace and love.

Righting a 2000 Year Old Wrong

Thank you in advance for indulging my rant!

As much as I am still fasting from the Eucharist (read here about the whys and hows of my exodus from the institutional Catholic Church), I still view Jesus as my teacher and in this, spend time every day with scripture. I go to the USCCB (United States Council of Catholic Bishops) website and read and meditate on the daily readings.  Every day!  Usually I find guidance, support, healing, inspiration, nurturing, nourishment and comfort in the scripture.  Not so much this week.  Instead, this week’s readings made me want to barf!

Peter. Peter. Peter. All I heard was about all the ways in which Peter delivered the message of Jesus’ resurrection and how he was THE ONE who started The Church.  Ok, from the perspective of a hierarchical, patriarchal, white, male privileged, misogynistic, fear-based, rooted in power and control institution, I guess this is true.  Peter did (or as some scholars would argue – Paul – or even Constantine) establish the institutional Church.  The Church that I can no longer bring myself to participate in because:

  1. I’m a woman who happens to be called to the “priesthood” (though certainly not in the clerical sense of the word!!!!!), and this path is closed to me.
  2. I’m divorced and refuse to pay a tribunal of single, white, men $750.00 to determine if my marriage was sacramental or not!
  3. I’m a mystic.
  4. I believe that all paths ultimately lead to God (by whatever name we give to SOURCE/LOVE/TRUTH).
  5. I believe all religions/spiritual paths contain kernels of the TRUTH and have practices and tools which help us to arrive at that TRUTH and that all are sacred and holy in their own right.
  6. I do not believe the Eucharist should be denied ANYONE who is sincere in their heart in their desire to connect with Christ in this way.
  7. I do not believe in original sin (not in the way the Church teaches it anyway).
  8. I believe we are all sons and daughters of God – regardless of our religion or beliefs!
  9. I practice Reiki (Which the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay has called “witchcraft and sorcery.”….don’t even get me started on this one. A) I can’t believe that in the 21st Century the Church still believes in witchcraft and sorcery….and B) how is Reiki witchcraft and sorcery and the “in hoc est corpus meum” that turns bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ is not? Just sayin’!
  10. I’m an uppity lay person who believes the Church should be worrying less about women Reiki practitioner, mystic, yoga practicing meditators and more about cleaning up the mess they have made with the millions who have suffered abuse at the hands of the institution. And if they aren’t willing to clean up this mess – how about feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, providing homes for the homeless?????? Really…..Lauri Ann Lumby (who apparently has a HUGE file with her name on it in a Diocesan office that will not be named – Hey, Diocese who shall not be named and those who have nothing else to do but police what Lauri Ann Lumby is saying and doing…here’s another piece for that big fat file! ) is SMALL POTATOES!

I digress! This week’s readings…..raving about Peter’s greatness made me want to barf!

WHAT ABOUT MARY?????????

Mary Magdalene by Dana Lumby
Mary Magdalene by Dana Lumby

What the hell happened to Mary Magdalene?

  • Jesus’ most devoted and faithful follower.
  • The ONLY one who was said to have completed her own self-actualization under Jesus’ guidance (“healed of seven demons” is a metaphor for having completed an initiatory process through which one attains self-realization).
  • ONE of few who remained by Jesus’ side through his trial, suffering, crucifixion and death (other than John, the men were not up for this…including Peter!).
  • THE ONE Jesus appeared to in the resurrection at the tomb… and…
  • THE ONE Jesus ordained to tell the others. (YES, I said ordained!)

What happened to Mary? The last we hear of her (in canonical scripture anyway) is when she went to tell the other disciples (who were hiding in the Upper Room) that Jesus was raised from the dead.  That’s it.  No more Mary!

Did she die or disappear into the mist? Or….did she simply get edited out?

Well, thanks to some boys (or shepherds) playing in some caves in the desert in Egypt, we know, at least for a time, what happened to Mary. And thanks to some linguists, translators and antiquities scholars, we now have Mary’s own words (at least in as much as the other gospels are the author’s own words) and a glimpse into what happened to Mary after the resurrection.  (See Jean Yves-LeLoup’s book, The Gospel of Mary Magdalene for the full text, translation and an absolutely beautiful and insightful commentary!!!!! Or, for a fictional account, read MY book, Song of the Beloved – the Gospel According to Mary Magdalene. )

SHE TAUGHT THE OTHER DISCIPLES.

Because, Jesus taught her things the guys wouldn’t or couldn’t get. Jesus taught her in secret and he taught her after he had died and been raised from the dead.

SHE had eyes to see and ears to hear what the others could not….and

SHE TAUGHT THEM.

But as has always been the case in the Western world, the woman’s word could not be received and was therefore discounted and later, demonized.

BOO!

But not anymore. In a million ways through a million teachers, Mary Magdalene has resurfaced and has come to teach us….

HOW TO BE HUMAN.

Or rather, how to be FULLY human.

Not the half-humans we have been for the past 10,000 years – dominated by fear, power and control, wreaking havoc on our planet and on each other.

Mary teaches us what Jesus taught her:

HOW TO LOVE and HOW TO BE LOVE.

Listen to her!

Good Friday – The Church Who Turned Away

As we commemorate the trial, suffering and death of Jesus at the hands of two institutions who turned away from him, I find that my own “crucifixion” has resurfaced to be examined and grieved again.  I share this because I know I am not alone in having felt turned away and condemned by my Church (recovering Catholics, those raised Catholic, non-practicing Catholics).

The Church That Turned Away from Me

For the past eight years, I have been fasting from the Eucharist.  To one on the outside looking in, I might be accused of turning away from my Church.  The opposite in fact is true.  It is the Church that turned away from me.

As a Vatican II Catholic, raised in a Vatican II Church, I have had a unique experience of Catholicism, markedly different from the generations that went before me.  I never experienced the Latin mass or was drilled on the Baltimore Catechism.  I attended Saturday evening folk mass accompanied by Kumbaya’s, Up, Up with People, and To Be Alive! Fish on Friday was reserved for Lent.  Ecumenical dialogue was encouraged and instead of Heaven being the privilege of Catholics only, the pearly gates stood open to all who lived in love. I was brought up with a rock n’ roll Jesus Christ Superstar who in his humanness pleaded to be released while weeping tears of blood at Gethsemane and to whom we desired to “see more clearly, love more dearly and follow more nearly,” as he danced around us in rainbow striped suspenders, sporting a Superman t-shirt.  Speaking out on matters of social injustice and working for peace; feeding the poor, clothing the naked and setting captives free was the understood responsibility of every person sitting in the pew.  Divine retribution and punishment had been left on the editing floor of the Holy See – along with indulgences; and even the unbaptized had a place in God’s loving kingdom. The only God I knew was the God of love. Jesus came to know this love and taught us how to love and was set up as the model and example of how every Christian was called to live.  We were called to be Jesus’ hands and heart through the unique charisms gifted to us by God’s Holy Spirit (sometimes even spoken of as a woman!).

This is the Church I grew up in and the Church that I deeply loved.  Strengthening this bond was the mass that provided sanctuary and support for my inherently contemplative nature. Gothic arches, painted statues and stained glass windows serenaded by artistic soul.  And the stand up, kneel down, bow and sit of Catholic choreography nourished my need for a spirituality that was as much physical as it was emotional and intellectual. Devotion to Mary satisfied my need for a Divine Mother and the saints became my superheroes.

If I love my Church so much, you may be wondering why I have been fasting from the Eucharist?  What went wrong?  In short, it seems I took what I learned about God, Jesus and our Christian call too literally:

  • I believe in an unconditionally loving God, a Son that is both fully human and fully divine; the call to follow Jesus as an example of how to live my life and to be and do as he would in the world.
  • I love God above all else, my neighbor as myself and I consider ALL of humankind to be my neighbor.
  • I judge not (lest I be judged).
  • I pray for my enemies.
  • I try to forgive 70 times 7 times.
  • I pray without ceasing.
  • I feed the hungry.
  • I clothe the naked.
  • I give sight to the blind.
  • I set captives free.
  • And, I heal the sick.

In the end, it was the last three actions that caused my Church to turn away from me.

After eight years in Catholic school and an equal number of years in academic and professional education and formation as a lay minister and spiritual director, I was guided by God to study hands-on-healing and Eastern Energy Medicine (Reiki). Out of this training and experience, God guided me further to develop a protocol through which people found healing from the spiritual wounds that separated them from God’s love, thereby healing them of their sin.  Right in line with Jesus’ teachings, right!? Apparently not, because the practices that I had learned and successfully applied were not “explicitly handed down by the Magesterium.”  I was challenged and confronted, hateful emails and letters were sent. I was accused of every nature of evil. Local bishops, fueled by the fear of the vocal minority, challenged my work and eventually handed down a prohibition calling it “witchcraft and sorcery,” in spite of my attempts to reason with and explain things to them.  Through this, I endured, but when I was attacked by a newly-appointed  pastor for a course in “Christian Zen” that I was sponsoring, who claimed it to be “outside Catholic teaching” and who identified Eastern practices as “dangerous,” I broke.  My heart was broken and my resolve with it.  The Church I had loved and out of whose embrace I had come to know God’s love – the Church who had called me to continue the work of Jesus – had betrayed me.  My gifts, my call, the unique way I had come to know God was no longer welcome. More than that, my ministry had been condemned as “dangerous,” “witchcraft and sorcery”….some even called it, “the work of the devil.”

ChristianZen.jpgOn that fateful autumn day, I listened beyond the voice of the fearful priest, the self-appointed inquisition, and even the Vatican II teachings that provided space for the ecumenical nature of the work I was doing and the unifying discussions that might arise out of this work.  I listened instead to the still, small voice of God within.  God’s voice was not small that day.  God spoke directly and loudly to my heart, “Lauri, you are my beloved daughter.  I have placed my word within your heart.  I have anointed you to be my servant.  Who will you obey?  Man or Me?”

Of course I chose God.

With God and the echoing support of Peter and the Apostles who similarly responded to the Church who turned away from them, “We must obey God rather than man, (Act 5: 29)” I handed over my keys and walked away.  Buoyed by God’s eternal promise of freedom, I knew that I could more freely do the work God had called me to absent the on-going scrutiny of the Church and the fearful minority.

Some would suggest that in leaving the Church I have also left behind my faith.  The opposite, in fact is true.  My faith has remained intact, and in truth, has been fortified.  I start every morning in prayer and meditation over the daily scripture.  Jesus is my constant companion, teacher and guide. I discern daily the ways in which I am being called to continue Jesus’ work in the world. I have seen the clear evidence of God at work through me as I witness the profound healing experienced by those who have become part of my ministry, and I am continually amazed at how God works through me to bring people more and more deeply into love and more closely connected to their own gifts and vocational call in the world.  I see the power of faith at work as I witness the empowerment experienced by those who come to me for counsel, attend my classes, read my writing and partake in my weekly services; and with each passing day my faith is strengthened and affirmed.

Regarding the Church, I wish I could say that like Lot, I never looked back.  I find, instead, that I am more like Lot’s wife, forever gazing back in profound longing – grieving the loss of my home, my sanctuary, my community, my Church.  Beyond my own grief, however, I weep for my Church.  I long for the Church that I had come to know – one that is firmly rooted in the truth of God’s unconditional love and acting as that love in the world.  I long for a Church that works for unity and empowerment of all humankind – regardless of their gender, beliefs, or sexual orientation.  I long for a Church that is willing to set down its wealth and its power and get in the trenches with those who need its help – the hungry, the poor, the imprisoned, the fearful, the wounded and the broken. I long for the Church that takes Jesus’ example seriously by being humble, giving the seats of honor to those without honor and washing the feet of strangers.  I yearn for a Church that supports people in becoming self-actualized, mature disciples – fostering the psycho-spiritual growth of men, women and children so that they can find the God they have forgotten in their hearts, discover their own unique giftedness and vocational call and become empowered in the fulfillment and use of these gifts in service to the betterment of the world.  I long for a Church that recognizes the earth as holy and sacred and works to be a steward for the gifts God gave us so that all of humanity may not only survive but thrive.  I cry out to the Church to work for justice – justice for all – not only for those who “are Catholic in good standing.”  My heart yearns for a Church that welcomes ALL people to its table – inviting all to know the unconditional and infinite love that is their truest nature. This is the Church that I once knew and I often wonder what happened to that Church – or if all along it had really just been a figment of my imagination.

Comfort for A Dying World

Today’s blog was a response I recently offered to someone I love dearly who is FEELING the effects of our shifting world.  As I was writing, I knew I was not only responding to their question, but to the question we all carry in our hearts.  Is something going on in the world and how can we care for ourselves as the new world is trying to be born?

I wanted to elaborate more on your question yesterday.  Sorry I had to cut our call short.  The earth is going through ENORMOUS changes right now and I suspect you are feeling it.  I can’t even articulate all of what it happening because it is in astrology language which is obviously not my first language!  🙂  If I can sum it up in my own words, the old world is dying (that rules by fear, power and control) and it knows it is dying so it is clinging hard and fast to what it knows, hence the increasing violence in the world.  (If Putin cuts off oil to the Ukraine, there will likely be another war….not that we have ever stopped fighting!).

Earth Heart

The good news is that this is coming to an end. Because ….either we will destroy ourselves (not likely) or we will figure out how to EVOLVE.  (for more on this, read “Conscious Evolution” by Barbara Marx Hubbard.  LOVED this book!)  The even better news is that there are already millions of people in place to birth the new world.  It might be tough going for awhile as the old devolves and the new emerges….but WE GOT THIS!  We KNOW and were BIRTHED with the passion, the vision, the abilities to bring forth a world of love, harmony, collaboration and peace!  WE GOT THIS.  And if we don’t our children do.  The generations behind us are chomping at the bit for the old order to die so they can step in and create the world they were born to live in….not the one our ancestors destroyed!  We Got this.  And it’s time!  It’s time for the old to fall away so that the new can be fully born.

Babaji Mataji 13 February 2014

Accompanying this shift is the full emergence of the Divine Feminine (completed in 2014) and the full integration of the Divine Masculine (to be completed by 2016).  What this means is the falling away of the Unholy Masculine (embodied by both men and women) which is rooted in fear and working through power and control, and the rising up of the authentic human – fully integrated in its Holy Divine Masculine/Feminine.  Men will fully embrace the Divine Masculine and own their authentic role as providers, protectors, encouragers, supporters, strong and uplifting….fully content in their own (healthy) power that they will not be threatened by the Divine Feminine.  The Divine Feminine is nurturing, receptive, allowing, courageous and strong in their own right – fully embodying their Soul’s calling.  What this will ultimately produce is an end to the co-dependent relationship dynamics we have favored and the beginning of the Self-Actualized, interdependent, co-creative couple (again see Barbara Marx Hubbard for more on this!).  And what is so cool about his is that the 20 and 30 somethings already got this too….they are already more balanced and healthy in their embodiment of the Divine Masculine and Divine Feminine and they are more likely to cultivate interdependent rather than co-dependent relationships.

Then there are our amazing Star Children.  They are here to help us remember LOVE – to remember where we came from and to help us create a kinder, gentler world….because THIS is what they remember of home and this is what they know the world is supposed to be.  When the world is not reflective of what they remember and know…..they react….first with confusion, then distress.  The more WE remember our true nature as children of light, the more we help them find a way to survive in this world until the shift is complete.  Yes….it sucks for them right now……AND they are critical to our evolution because they shine the mirror on all those things rooted in fear and all the things that are not supportive of our greatest wellbeing.  THEY ARE OUR TEACHERS!  Reiki.  Homeopathy.  Lightwork.  Natural foods.  Natural fabrics.  A calm and nurturing environment help them to feel safe through the transition.  Along with teaching them about their gifts of empathy and what to do with those gifts and how to protect themselves from all the negativity that is still floating around in the world (which until they know better, they think they have to “fix” or at least pick up and carry along with them.  This is NOT their job…..they are simply God’s eyes, seeing where love is needed and asking God to send love to that pain.).

So to answer your question….YES there is a lot going on in the world.  Take care of yourself.  Honor what your intuition is telling you about the world.  Be in love.  Be in peace.  Don’t get drawn into the fear.  And by all means…..embrace, honor, cultivate your own amazing gifts because the world needs your gifts and we need them now!

Love,

Lauri
