Twilight visitations: Yesterday morning while in meditation, I was visited upon by a Presence. It appeared first as a flash of light, then as a star, hanging just outside my window. The “star” was filled with the Presence(s) of Knowing and Truth. Then the star began to speak – not in the language of words, but in the language of knowing. Delivering to me what I need to know in this moment – a message I am now being asked to share with the world.
We are here to change the soul and vibration of our world.
I already knew this on some level, and I’m certain you do too. But in this most recent transmission, the fact became even more clear – along with the method.
The method is not about doing. Doing is the work of a dualistic world. Instead, the method is in our BEING. It is by our very presence that the energy of our world is being transmuted from fear into love; separation into union. Simply in being ourselves, the vibration of our world is changing; but even more so when we add intention to our being.
As a “transmitter,” this is my mission and purpose on this plane – to simply BE and Transmit the new vibrations that are needed so desperately in our world.
The same is true for you, in your own unique soul gift, mission and purpose on this plane.
We did not come here to be human. We’ve seen what human beings have done to their world. We are here to be love and in being that love, changing the very fabric of the world, along with what it truly means to be human. While it may not seem so at times, the world is changing simply because of our presence because this is what we came here to do (oops….BE).

For many years I have used the Tarot as a source of guidance and support. I do not believe the cards themselves are guiding me, but that the archetypal images are reflecting back to me the deep truths I know in my heart but sometimes cannot see through the intrusions of the mind. Yesterday morning, at another crossroads in my life, I laid cards. What came through at once surprised me and affirmed what I have known all along. I have many times been given a vision of my mission and purpose in this life. This mission has not changed and is being fulfilled in the timing that can only come from the Divine. As I told a friend on Monday,
“I am very clear on my mission. As the Catholic Church (and other forms of institutional religion) implode upon themselves, I am here as a bridge, a source of comfort and a guide. I am able to speak the language of the people who will be leaving the Church. I can be a source of comfort and support for their grief and shock. I will support them in finding healing from the trauma and break free of co-dependency. I will provide them with tools in a language with which they are familiar that will empower them in finding their own truth.”
This is the work I have been doing for the past 25 years and the work I will continue to do. In laying cards, this has, once again, been confirmed:
Here were the cards I drew:
The Empress: At the center is the card that represents self. Here, she is the Empress. The Empress, here represented by St. Helena represents the reception of a vision/mission/purpose and the courage and strength to see it through. The Empress tells us, “You know what your mission is…..stick with it….be true to your mission….and see it through. In remaining diligent and faithful, it will be fulfilled.
High Priestess: The second card represents the situation we are currently facing. Here, represented by the Magdalene who plays the role of priestess. The priestess card is all about the inner journey, the esoteric, mystery and intuition. The priestess card presides over the gateway between life and death is able to communicate with “the gods.” The Priestess tells us to listen to the voice within and act according to its dictates. She tells us to trust our intuition even (especially) when it makes no logical sense whatsoever. She reminds me that this is what I am to continue to do for myself, while supporting others in doing the same.
Ten of Staffs: To the right of the two center cards is the card that represents new beginnings and inspiration. Here – the ten of staffs which represent RESURRECTION. What has died will find new life. The phoenix will come forth out of the ash. Considering all the endings and “death” I have experienced in the past many years, I can only take this as a message of great hope and promise, confirming what I have always believed – if the Universe is asking so much to come to an end, it must be for the sake of something HUGE. I welcome whatever that might be.
6 of Cups: At the bottom is the card that presents transition. Connected with the element of fire it represents taking in what is life-giving and letting go of that which no longer serves. This is the corner of transformation. As the 6 of cups, this card represents service – specifically service to others. Here, depicted as Jesus washing the feet of his disciples – a card of humble service and the inversion of hierarchy. I take this as an invitation to hold true to my commitment and focus on humble service – avoiding the temptations of the ego to place oneself above others as “teacher” or “priest” or “guru” but instead as companion. We are all on this journey trying to figure our own sh.t out. If I can help others find themselves in the middle of the debris of our human experience, then I am humbled and grateful to do so.
The Star: The card to the left represents the process of coming into maturity – approaching the fruition of our labors. In the traditional Tarot, this is the Star card, here portrayed by Teresa of Avila in her vision of the interior castle (heaven) and the seven step process of getting there. This card represents our own ascension (attainment of self-actualization and bringing that into our lived experience.) It also represents a breakthrough and an opportunity suddenly becoming available. I’ll take it!
Knight of Swords: The top cards represent the outcome of the journey. The first card, the Knight of Swords, invites us to explore our demons and our attitude toward them. Are they our enemy and something to be destroyed, or can we find a gentler way of dealing with the perceived obstacles both within and outside of us? St. George invites me to take the gentle path and to work toward integration and union rather than destruction. Interestingly this is EXTREMELY relevant at this time in my journey.
Nine of Coins: The final card is the card of true abundance – a spiritual abundance providing material support. It also represents receiving the fruits of our labors. This is the experience I’ve been waiting for….and may it be so!

A few years back, I learned that the second largest religious denomination in the United States (reported by PEW Research, second only to the Roman Catholic Church), is made up of non-practicing Catholics. I sat down and did the math and the number of people who still call themselves Catholic, but who no longer attend mass on a regular basis is 42.7 million! That is a HUGE number of people. If you are reading this blog, you are likely one of those 42.7 million, or perhaps you were raised Catholic and no longer call yourself Catholic, so we can simply add you to this number and we might find that there are in fact 85.4 million Recovering Catholics in the United States. If that were the case, we would outnumber the active Roman Catholic population!!!
You might ask yourself, “Who cares?” Why is this significant information? What does this prove to anybody, if anything? Well, it means something to me. And here’s why:
1) There are a significant number of men and women in the United States that had a particular religious experience growing up which formed them (for better or worse) and which contributed to who they are today.
2) This unique religious experience of being raised Catholic probably continues to inform them (again, for better or worse).
3) This unique religious experience of being raised Catholic becomes part of the marrow, blood and bones of one raised in this tradition and cannot be exorcised no matter how your current religious experience has changed (if, indeed it has).
4) For those who are no longer practicing Catholics, there is a unique form of grief that comes with the separation from Catholicism (whatever the reason for that separation), and there is a unique form of longing that cannot be quenched.
5) There is a unique set of needs residing within the hearts of Recovering Catholics, that for the most part, are not being met. We cannot get these needs met in another religious institution. We cannot go to the Catholic Church to get these needs met. We cannot meet these needs on our own.
6) I am here to help the 42.7 million (or more) Recovering Catholics get those needs met.
What are those needs?
I see the needs of Recovering Catholics as the following (and if you see more, please let me know what they are…..and I will see how I can help!):
1) Grief Support: Catholics leave for a multitude of reasons, most boiling down to the fact that the truth God revealed to them is in conflict with the doctrine of the Church – teachings on contraception, homosexuality, vocations, divorce, remarriage, etc. etc. Some leave because they have been directly harmed by a representative of the Church – sexually abused by a priest, physically or verbally abused by a teacher, counselor or lay minister, given incorrect information about Church teachings that made them feel unwelcome (like a certain family member who was told they were no longer welcome to come to communion simply because of a divorce). No matter the reason, when we leave a community in which we were one time a member, even if the parting is our own decision (kind of), there is grief. Recovering Catholics need support for the grief they experience in leaving the Institution behind, or in being asked to leave.
2) Resolution: Many Catholics (especially in the past), who left or were asked to leave, were asked to leave based on faulty information. A representative of the Church misinterpreted the doctrine, or interpreted it to fit their own personal agenda. For these people, the healing is helped when they learn the faulty nature of the information. Yes, this will certainly stir anger, but for some, it opens the door to their return….something many are ultimately longing for. Recovering Catholics might not seek this resolution from a priest, so I can be that bridge….if this is what they need.
3) Longing: In my generation and the generations that follow, the number one reason I have heard for people leaving is because in the Catholic Church, their needs were not being met. Specifically, the desire to:
Find Inner Peace.
Know their Gifts and how they are called to use them.
Find meaning and purpose in their lives.
The Catholic Church, most often, attempts to meet these needs through religious formation – the dissemination of doctrine, or doesn’t even go so far as that and simply stands in the belief that providing you with an opportunity to attend mass and receive the sacraments is enough. Unfortunately, this is an intelligent and wise population of men and women who are looking for something more than to have their heads filled with rules and regulations, history and traditions. And for many, the mass is not relevant (or the homily given at mass isn’t relevant). They want DEPTH! They want something that has meaning and relevance in their own lives and which allows them to know God personally, not just through someone else’s interpretation. In short, what they are looking for, but don’t have the words for, is Spiritual Formation – something the Church has not done a good job of making available to the men and women in the pews. Spiritual Formation just happens to be one of my areas of expertise!
4) Validation: Recovering Catholics also desire validation….and they deserve it! They have been formed to use the brain God gave them to reason, discern and exercise truth. And, many, if not most, grew up in a culture that lost its trust in authority. They/we have come to question authority and to not blindly follow simply because we were told. Instead, authority has to be earned and our own reasoning minds need to be validated. We need to be given credit for having a brain and an intelligent thought and the freedom to challenge and question what we are being told. In the Institutional Church, questioning is often discouraged or outwardly condemned. What the Institution has forgotten is that the most important stage in faith development is the questioning and searching stage. If the Church really wants mature disciples, this stage needs to be honored. If the Institution will not welcome these questions, I am happy to do so! I’m excited to see how your questions will help you grow….and me as well! 🙂
If you are a recovering Catholic and looking for support, I am here for you. Call (920) 230-1313 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to find out more.
“Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night’s Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.“
?The Night’s Watch oath
Once upon a time, I had a mission and a purpose.
Initially, that mission was to support people in discovering and cultivating a personal relationship with Jesus. I discovered this calling and then sought to fulfill it within the embrace of the Catholic Church.
The longer I worked in and for the Church, the more I came to realize the sins of the Institution and made it my task, like Sts. Francis and Clare, to reform the Catholic Church – turning it away from fear, power and control and toward the love of Jesus that inspired its inception.
When this proved to be an unwelcome and impossible task, I turned my gaze outside the Institution and sought to support people in becoming spiritually fulfilled – giving them the tools to discover the answer to the following questions and then empowering them to live out their answers:
Who am I?
Whose am I?
What are my gifts and how am I called to use them for the sake of my own fulfillment and then for the sake of the betterment of the world?
The more I offered this support outside the Church, the more I discovered that these are not religious questions, but universal in nature. These are the questions that are answered in our common journey toward self-actualization. In conjunction with this belief, I believed that if we would all just find our self-actualization that we would have peace and harmony in our lives. With this, my mission became nothing short of saving the world! No small goals for Lauri Ann Lumby!
The problem, however, is that the world does not want to be saved.
The sad truth is that the majority of humanity is content to live in status quo, desperately clinging to their judgment, fears, perceived separation, need to be right and the need to make someone else wrong. Even as I write this I am aware of my own culpability in this regard, creating my own version of “us and them.” SIGH!
These are the mountains I used to be willing to die on. These are the battles I fought; the causes I have given my life to; and for which I have risked and lost much. Like a member of “The Night’s Watch,” I have devoted my life to these causes and offered up similar vows. Toward what end? Like Jon Snow who was betrayed and then murdered by his own brothers, I find I have no fight left in me. And like Jon, I turn the cloak I have donned as a champion of Love over to another hand while uttering Jon’s immortal words,
“My Watch is Ended.”
If humanity wants to continue to choose separation, fear, judgment, separation, hatred, violence, war, sickness, poverty, death and despair, who am I to change their mind? I have no need to convince anyone of anything…even the invitation to peace and love. I find it is all I can do to find peace myself and to share what I have learned with a few interested souls. Maybe that is enough for one person’s life, to find their own state of inner peace. For those who are interested in learning the tools that I have found helpful, I will always be here. Otherwise, it seems my watch here is ended.
I know why I’m here. I’ve always known it. From the first time I heard this song:
And every minute thereafter, I have known it. It has only taken me 51 (almost 52) years to believe it.
I am here to be hospice to a dying world and to support the birth of the new that is already coming forth out of the ash. In case I didn’t get it when I first heard “The Age of Aquarius,” my Soul made sure I knew in a dream I had when I was just a child. The dream was of the coming of the end of the world and the assignment I was given to gather my friends and do what we needed to do to save the world from complete and total collapse while restoring the world to its original intention in integrity, honesty, peace, justice and love.
As I have meandered through the first two 26-year cycles of my life, the what and how of this mission has been made more and more clear, while at the same time seeming more cloudy and confusing. What this looks like and the form it will take is cloudy. What it is made up of is clear:
LOVE. Specifically, the love I have learned through Jesus. I didn’t learn what the institutions taught through their politicalized version of Jesus. I learned directly from the man. I learned it through prayerful study of scripture and in finding the truth beyond the words as guided by my own deep source of inner truth. I learned it through personal, intimate encounters and conversations with Jesus and with him, the Magdalene. I learned it through teachers from other spiritual traditions who were saying the same thing, which then ultimately brought me back to Jesus. I learned it through dreams, visions, higher levels of learning, and through the rich personal experiences of my life. Here, I bypassed doctrine and dogma and learned what is true for me….and that truth is LOVE.
MAGIC. I don’t mean “hocus pocus” magic like that reserved for ordained, “celibate” men, waving their hands and turning bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ (don’t get me wrong, this magic can be real magic depending on the intention of the one doing the magic and those receiving it). I also don’t mean using magic to get what I want or by manipulating the elements for my own selfish end. No, I mean REAL MAGIC. The Magic that is the Divine in us working through us to manifest a higher goal….and that goal brings us back to #1, LOVE.
This is the Magic that defies the laws of nature, that defies the rational and logical mind and that sets Newtonian physics on its ass. The very Magic that Moses did when he parted the Reed Sea, that Miriam did when she found water in the desert, that Elijah did when he brought a dead child back to life, that Mother Mary did in hearing the Angel’s call, that Jesus did when he healed the sick, fed the hungry, gave sight to the blind, set captives free, raised Lazarus from the dead and that Mary Magdalene did in being catalyst and witness to the resurrection. This is the Magic that all of these great teachers came to know through their own intimate connection with the Divine that dwelt within them. And this is the Magic that I am called to REMEMBER so that I can fulfill my mission and support others in fulfilling theirs.

Each and every one of us is uniquely gifted to be LOVE in the world. When we came into this world, we knew what our unique gifts were, but through societal conditioning (“writers are a dime a dozen,” “you can’t make a living doing that,” “what you think you are seeing or hearing is only your imagination,” “Good Girls don’t do that!” “Cool or straight boys don’t act or sing or dance…”) we learn to forget, hide, or set aside the magic we came into this world to enjoy and to share. In order to fit in and to go along with societal expectations, we forget our gifts, but at some point, we realize that what society asks of us is not life-giving or is making us either sick or crazy, so we begin to search. We then spend the next several (many) years of our life trying to find our gifts and then overcoming the fears of actually nurturing, cultivating, enjoying and sharing our gifts….or we remain unfulfilled and/or sick.
Each and every one of us LONGS for a life that is meaningful, fulfilling and which gives us a sense of purpose. It is through our gifts (magic) that we are able to experience this life that we long for. For me, it has been a 51 year journey of knowing, forgetting, exploring, discovering, learning, growing, healing, transforming and then being empowered in my gifts. The journey never really ends, but at 51 years old, with confidence I can say what my gifts are (explaining how I use them is a whole other matter!). I think the image below, which came out of a recent class I was facilitating, pretty much sums it up:
As one dear friend once acknowledged, “Lauri, your gift is hearing the truth beyond the words.” I have also come to understand that this is also true of my vision – I can SEE the truth beyond the illusion. In the language of spiritual gifts, these abilities fall under the category of “discernment.” I then use these abilities in my work as a teacher and a counselor – also spiritual gifts. Knowledge is one of my spiritual gifts (magic) which is further supported by my love of learning. Contemplation (prayer) is one of my gifts and helps to support me in all that I have mentioned above. Put all of these gifts together and they further support my magic of being a leader and a visionary, a pastor and a prophet. It is the prophecy part that often gets me into trouble.
Prophets, as I have learned, are not those who predict the future, we are those who are able to “read the sign of the times” – who are able to see where society is going if things remain on their current path. We are then called to SEE and SPEAK the better way – the way of correction, if you will. We see where reform is needed and we are called to live that reform and share it with other. The place I have ultimately called to be prophet to….is what we have traditionally called “church.” Specifically, moving beyond the institutions to Jesus’ original message of LOVE – reclaiming that message and doing what Jesus originally called us to do – to support each other in becoming self-actualized. This takes Jesus’ universal message out of the hands of power and privilege and brings it out into the world where ALL can benefit from this LOVE – no matter what one’s personal beliefs might be.
This is what I have come to understand to be my MAGIC. What is yours?

What is Your Magic?, created by Lauri Ann Lumby, OM, MATS was created to support you in knowing the truth that YOU are uniquely gifted to experience meaning and purpose in your life and to find fulfillment in the use and engagement of your gifts, first for yourself, and then, in service to the betterment of the world. Your gifts were given to you so that you might enjoy happiness, and your gifts are meant to be shared so that the world can become a better place for all of us to enjoy. You cannot become the person you were meant to be – achieving your greatest potential – without discovering, cultivating, nurturing and then sharing your gifts; and the world cannot become what it was meant to be without the gifts you have to share. For your own sake, and for the sake of the world, I thank you for giving yourself the permission and the time to explore your magic and discover your gifts!
Over the course of thirteen lessons, you will have an opportunity to first explore the calling that has set you on the path to exploring your gifts along with the importance of understanding that while your magic may be grand in such gifts as leadership, music or the arts, your magic may also reside in what you might judge as weakness, imperfection or failure. Ultimately, all that we are and everything that we have has the potential for being a gift that provides for our fulfillment while supporting us in helping the world.
Next, you will have an opportunity to explore what the ancient, sacred traditions, have identified as unique and special(spiritual) gifts. Some of these giftswe will draw from the Judeo-Christian tradition, others from the Vedic traditions of India, specifically in the writings of Patanjali. I have added some additional gifts that have arisen in support of our current stage of human evolution. In this discovery, you will have an opportunity to explore such concrete gifts as hospitality, craftsmanship, encouragement and leadership; in addition to the more intuitive gifts of discernment of spirits, spiritual hearing, spirit vision and clairempathy. You will also explore some very non-traditional gifts such as invisibility and time-walking.
Below is a list of the gifts that you will have an opportunity to explore and entertain:
Traditional Spiritual Gifts in the Judeo-Christian Tradition (charisms):
No one said life would be easy. In fact, most of the time it is hard. This is true even when we have found our life’s meaning, purpose and mission. Look at Jesus for example, or Martin Luther King, Jr. Even the Dalai Lama has faced his fair share of adversity. This is especially true for those who are called into this life to transform and transmute the difficulties of this life into something meaningful. Empaths, Shadow Walkers, and Shadow Workers, especially, are called to this task. Not unlike Jesus, their (our) job is to experience the fullness of the human experience – suffering and all – so that others might live. Empaths, Shadow Workers and Shadow Walkers feel and experience the suffering of the world in ways that others do not. Not only do they (we) have their own unique brand of suffering, they feel the suffering and pain of others. The purpose of the suffering is so that healing may come to the pain. More than anything else, Empaths, Shadow Walkers and Shadow Workers are healers. This is what we came here to be and to do.

Transmuting the Darkness.
Seeing and Feeling the pain,
the constriction of the world.
Receiving it into the forge of our own bodies
So that it may be transformed.
Plunging into the depths
In search of every pebble of darkness
So as to bring it forth into the light.
To point out to humanity, the source of all that ails it.
Not because they have sinned,
But because they have allowed their fear to choose their path,
Instead of that which was originally intended –
A path made only of love.
Each of us is uniquely gifted to find meaning and purpose in our lives and to be a vessel through which healing, transformation, love may come into the world. Each and every one of us is uniquely gifted to find meaning, purpose and fulfillment in our lives – for our own sake, and ultimately for the betterment of the world. Every prophet who has gone before us heralded this message – first about themselves, then about the audience to whom they were speaking, and then in anticipation of the prophets who would come after them. As you read the following words from Isaiah, imagine that it is about you that he is speaking. Then reflect on, how you are called to live out this mission in your life!
Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, Upon whom I have put my Spirit; he shall bring forth justice to the nations, Not crying out, not shouting, not making his voice heard in the street. A bruised reed he shall not break, and a smoldering wick he shall not quench, Until he establishes justice on the earth; the coastlands will wait for his teaching. Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spreads out the earth with its crops, Who gives breath to its people and spirit to those who walk on it: I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice, I have grasped you by the hand; I formed you, and set you as a covenant of the people, a light for the nations, To open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness.

What is Empowerment Training?
Empowerment training arises out of the deepest longing of the human Soul to find meaning and purpose in our lives through our own unique giftedness; acknowledging that we are forever dissatisfied and restless until this longing is fulfilled.
Empowerment training provides the resources, tools and support we need to fulfill our purpose and satisfy this deep, inner longing.
Through empowerment training, you will:
Identify your unique giftedness (your magic!) and the passions that when engaged will give you a sense of meaning, purpose and fulfillment; and in doing so, helping to serve the betterment of our world.
Discover the deep, inner fears that are preventing you from nurturing and sharing your gifts.
Learn effective tools for moving through these fears so that you are more free to nurture and share your gifts.
Be empowered to experience the full use of your gifts and finding fulfillment in doing so, both for your own sake and for the betterment of the world.
Receive on-going support in the use and on-going expansion of your gifts and in moving through the resistance and fear of doing so.
Here is what empowerment training through Authentic Freedom Academy includes:
What empowerment training is not:
Empowerment training is not counseling. Whereas counseling focuses on treating “disease” and supporting behavior modification and recovery, the focus in empowerment training is self-awareness and deep, enduring transformation. Empowerment training may include the healing of old wounds and unresolved trauma, but it is accomplished through supporting deep, inner change. In empowerment training, anxiety, depression and panic attacks are not pathologized but are acknowledged as symptoms of the Soul longing for its fulfillment, symptoms that subside on their own the closer we get to the purpose of our Soul.
Empowerment training is not life-coaching. While encouragement and support are a big part of empowerment training, the emphasis is on personal responsibility, accountability and empowerment. The goal of empowerment training is that one day you will no longer need our services because you will have all the tools you need to fly on your own.
NOTE: If you are under the care of a licensed therapist or life coach, you will find that empowerment training complements this work by providing you with additional tools in support of your overall goals of self-care.
