The Prophet’s Curse – Why Caring is Dangerous

As a prophet, we see too much, hear too much, feel too much and know too much.  We see the truth behind the veil and the face you hide behind your mask.  We see the truth beyond the illusion.  We recognize and see the sign of the times.  In our ability to see we are able to “predict” where things are going and the likely outcome if things continue on their current trajectory.  We are able to hear the truth beyond the words and it is difficult for us to be deceived.  You might not know your own truth, but for those with the gift of prophecy, we hear it. Even if you are in denial of your own truth, we know it.  In addition to all this seeing, hearing and knowing, we FEEL you!  We feel what you are feeling – your anxiety, your fears, your worry and concern, all the shame, past traumas and wounds that keep you imprisoned in the current patterns of your life.

The purpose for the prophet in possessing all of these gifts is so that we might be a source of support for those who desire the gift of healing that comes with our gift. For those who are interested in being free of past traumas, shame, woundedness and the unacknowledged fears that keep them small; and for those who are willing to do the difficult work of healing their soul, the prophet’s gifts are wholeheartedly welcome and received and the prophet’s purpose is fulfilled in the exchange.  As prophets, when this happens we are able to live fully from the love that ultimately drives our gifts and our desire to be of service to the world.  More than anything else, the prophet is one who deeply cares about the wellbeing of the world and the people in it.  Unfortunately, not everyone is willing to receive our gifts.  This is where caring becomes dangerous…..

The Call of the Prophet and the Prophet’s Revenge

The call of the prophet is to change the world. As prophets we are gifted with the ability to see what in our world is in need of healing and transformation and how to support that transformation.  Prophets come in all shapes and sizes and walk among us within all sectors of our culture.  Prophets are right there underneath our noses, working for positive non-violent change in our homes, our schools, our medical facilities, our corporations, our government, and yes, even in the military.  As prophets we each have a unique calling specific to our circle of influence or area of expertise.  As Albert Nolan so astutely observed:

Prophets are people who speak out when others remain silent. They are watchful of the areas in need of reform in their own society, their own country, or their own religious institutions. True prophets are men and women who stand up and speak (or act) out about the practices of their own people and their own leaders – while others remain silent. True prophets are not part of the authority structure. Prophets are never appointed, ordained or anointed by the religious establishment. They experience a special calling that comes directly from God, and their message comes from their own personal experience of God. (Jesus Today – A Spirituality of Radical Freedom, Orbis Books, 2008, pp. 63-67)

The prophet’s call is to change the world. The challenge to being a prophet, however, is that as a voice for change with a vision of our future and how to get there, we disturb the status quo.  In order to make a change….we have to…..change.  And as I have learned, the human species is more afraid of change than they are of death (why else would a woman who is being regularly beaten by her husband stay?).  As such, the world’s response to the prophet is one of two things:

    • To make the prophet the enemy.
    • To ignore them all together.

If you are a prophet, you are familiar with these responses. I know I am.  What the local Catholic Church did to me in response to my request for reform (which really wasn’t reform at all…it was simply a request to return to the mission Jesus originally began which was to teach people how to love) was everything short of a literal burning at the stake.  (Cue Mel Brooks).  After leaving the Church my work continues to be met by our popular culture with mostly silence and blank stares.  I am not alone.  I know prophets in the fields of teaching, religion, medicine, the arts, government, etc. who have met with much of the same.  It is the prophet’s curse – that and a fair dose of existential rage over who does get heard in a culture based in fear, power, control, greed, gluttony, sloth, deception and corruption.

As a prophet, however, we do not live in that world. We cannot live in that world.  If we did we would die.  The prophet has no choice but to stand in the integrity of our gift, our call, our mission and our purpose.  When we stray from our truth, our calling, our path, when we try to sell out for the cultural norm, we are punished.  This punishment is not an act of Divine retribution, but the natural consequence of denying our gifts.

What is true for the prophet, however, is also true for all of humanity. Each and every person on this planet has been uniquely gifted to be a vessel through which the transformational power of Divine love is meant to be manifest in our world.  Every single person.  And yet, very few heed the true calling of their soul, dooming them forever to a life of quiet desperation  – in our modern world, selling out to the house, the car, the status, the fame, the power, the money.  While they may be successful based on societal standards, they are not fulfilled within.  Some are aware of this lack of fulfillment, many feel it but choose to numb it in any of the various ways in which our culture silences the voice of our inner truth – food, alcohol, sex, gambling, TV, the internet, drugs, constant doing and achieving.  All the while, writhing from within over the insatiable longing of their soul.

While I do not believe in Divine retribution, I do believe in karma. When we ignore the calling of our soul, we suffer.  While as a prophet I might find some measure of comfort or a righteous sense of justice over this truth, but I do not.  Instead it makes me sad.  While I might be tempted to seek a prophet’s revenge on those who choose to ignore the calling of their soul, I do not.  I only want them to be free.  While I might have the tools to help people find that freedom, I cannot make them drink.

The Call of the Prophet and its Curse

The call of the prophet and the gift of prophecy is one of the spiritual gifts that is explored in my work of supporting the spiritual awakening and self-actualization of change agents.  Discerning our gifts and how we are called to use those gifts makes up a significant part of that process.   As one who has this gift, I can attest to the gift as well as the curse of possessing and sharing this gift.

Defining the Prophet’s Gift

In my online course, What is Your Magic, I offer the following definition of a prophet as described by Albert Nolan, a Dominican priest in his book, Jesus Today – a Spirituality of Radical Freedom (Orbis Books, 2008):

Prophets are people who speak out when others remain silent. They are watchful of the areas in need of reform in their own society, their own country, or their own religious institutions. True prophets are men and women who stand up and speak (or act) out about the practices of their own people and their own leaders – while others remain silent. True prophets are not part of the authority structure. Prophets are never appointed, ordained or anointed by the religious establishment. They experience a special calling that comes directly from God, and their message comes from their own personal experience of God. (pp. 63-67)

Mary Magdalene fulfilling her calling as Prophet

In my experience one who possesses the gift of prophecy has the ability to:

See

For the prophet, seeing goes beyond what can be perceived through mere physical vision.  One with the gift of prophecy has the ability to see the truth beyond the material.  Here we are able to see…..really see.  The prophet sees what is before them, while also seeing the subtle inter-weavings of all that is around what they are able to see.  Prophets are able to see the connections, what led to what they are seeing and what will continue to unfold from what they are seeing unless significant change takes place.  The seeing of the prophet includes material things, human actions and interactions, the energy and emotion of what they are seeing.  A prophet can identify what is “of the good,” and what is not.

Read

In their ability to see, prophets can also read.  This most commonly presents itself in the ability to read people – to see beyond the mask that every person put out into the world, beyond the projection of what people want others to think or believe about them.  The prophet sees the truth. We see all that people are trying to hide from the world….but we also see their gifts.  We see the potential within every human being and how the masks they were are blocking the fulfillment of that potential.  The most challenging aspect of this ability in the prophet is that while most are not consciously aware of the fact that they are being SEEN, unconsciously they do.  For those whose “survival” depends on their ability to be seen in a certain light, the prophet becomes “the enemy,” not because of something they’ve done, but for who they are.  This is one of the curses of the gift of prophecy.

Hear

In addition to seeing the truth beyond the illusion, prophets hear the truth beyond the words.  Regardless of the chosen words or their intention, the prophet hears what people are really saying.  If someone says, “It’s a great day,” but truly feels elsewise, the prophet will know it.  The prophet hears the truth beyond every subtle deception for under the gaze of the prophet no one can hide.  Again, this sometimes proves to be one of the challenges for the prophet.

Feel

Like a Geiger counter or seismic graph, prophets have the ability to feel.  We feel the energy of the world and its movement.  We feel the energy within and embodied by every person or situation we meet.  We can feel whether the energy is of expansion and love, moving in the direction of “the good,” or if it is the energy of fear and constriction moving toward harm.  We feel it and we know it.

Discern

Discernment is perhaps the greatest gift of the prophet and one cannot be a prophet without first possessing and honing this gift.  Discernment is the process through which we determine (in everything we encounter) what is “of God” and what is not.  Through discernment we are able to identify what is based in fear, power, deceit, or control, and what is rooted in love.  Anything that is not “of love” is not “of God” and it is the prophet’s job to make that fact known to the world.

The Prophet’s Curse

Herein lays the challenge of being a prophet and the curse that is inherent in the gift.  A prophet has no purpose in only seeing, reading, hearing, feeling and discerning.  The purpose of the gift of prophecy is to heal and change the world.  The world cannot be changed if what the prophet knows is not spoken.  The prophet must speak what they see, read, hear, feel and discern (subtlety is allowed).  The problem is that more often than not, those to whom the prophet is called to speak “Can’t handle the truth.”  Acknowledging the truth would require change and if there is one thing human beings fear more than death, it is change.  As a result, this often leaves the prophet as simply another “voice crying out in the wilderness…” and in my experience, “speaking only to sand.”

Blessed Are You Who Believed

As a child, I was granted a vision. The vision was the herald of “the end of the world,” along with the promise that this ending was not set in stone, but could be thwarted, or rather, re-directed through the accomplishment of one simple task.  The task, however, proved not to be so simple.  In the dream, this task was symbolized by the command to “gather your friends, dig up Lincoln’s bones (as in former President), and restore them to their rightful place.”

lincolnmemorialpixabay

As I reflect on this dream in light of what we, as an American culture, and as a world, have undergone in the dreadful year of 2016, the dream makes total sense. If we, as a culture, and a world, continue to stray from the nobility, integrity, authenticity, honesty, and righteousness symbolized by our 16th President, we shall certainly manifest our own demise.  For me, the dream becomes especially potent as we approach the passing of the baton from President Barack Obama, (who for me, more than any recent president has represented the Lincoln archetype) to Donald Trump.  To say that this is a volatile time in our history would be an understatement.  In my lifetime, it has never been more critical that we “gather our friends” and “restore Lincoln’s bones” to their rightful place.

But what does THAT mean? This is where the 40+ years since the vision prove to be helpful, especially those since 1993 when the red brick flew through the air and hit be between the eyeballs – waking me up to my mission and purpose in this life. This mission is nothing short of bringing heaven to earth!  (No small goals here!)

What does THAT mean? In short, it is doing what Jesus did – discovering my own Oneness with the Divine and in that Oneness finding my unique gifts and call, and through these gifts and call, finding meaning and purpose in my life.  Then, showing others how to do the same.  Abraham Maslow called this process self-actualization.  Carl Jung called it individuation.  New-agers call it ascension. By whatever name you call it, the process is the same – asking and then finding the answer to the questions:

  • Who am I?
  • Where do I find that place of inner peace, connection and contentment?
  • What are my gifts and how am I being called to use them?

What does this have to do with Lincoln’s bones and the end of the world? It’s simple really and it is the other part of the vision that has been given to me in adulthood:

world-pixabay

A gathering of friends who have and continue to do for themselves what Jesus did (becoming self-actualized), who know what their gifts are, and who are finding fulfillment in the use of these gifts for their own sake, and (as it relates to Lincoln’s bones) for the sake of the betterment of the world. It is through this gathering of friends that:

  • Hospice will be offered for the dying world.
  • Support will be found for those who are grieving the loss of what they have known and for the anxiety they will be feeling in the face of a great unknown.
  • Prayer will be offered for the sake of healing and wholing our world.
  • Resources will be made available for those who are hurting and in need of healing – spiritual, emotional, mental and physical healing.
  • Rituals will be done for the sake of restoring our world to its natural state in love.
  • Peaceful, non-violent activism will take place to help raise awareness to all the places in our world in need of love and then working toward being that love.
  • Education, formation and empowerment will be made available for those who wish to be a part of birthing a better world – ie: heaven on earth.

For nearly 50 years, this vision has been with me and the weight of this call. For the past 23 years, I have worked diligently toward this call.  I have risked much for the sake of this call and have been called insane for believing such a call.  In the face of what is unfolding in our world, I find that I can no longer question, doubt or challenge this call because I know it to be true.  Whatever the cost, and without a safety net, this is what I am here for and what I am called to do. If we do not work on changing our own hearts from fear to love and if we do not work toward supporting others in doing the same, the consequences are nothing short of our own lives and the lives of our planet…and you don’t need to be a prophet to figure this out.  It is right here before our eyes, if we take the time to look.  We can no longer afford to bury our heads in the sand, unless of course, we are happy to see our world end.

Toward this end, I have put out the clarion call and gathered a group of friends to envision a better world and to dream about how we are called to be loving vehicles for change.  If you feel so-called, join us on Monday, January 2, 2017 at 6:30 pm for our next Gathering of the Tribe. Here you will find community, support, inspiration and empowerment. If you are not in the Oshkosh area, join us by intention, or better yet, call together your own group of friends.

As I pondered this call at the juncture between 2016 and 2017, for myself and for those I have gathered, who should come to me but Mother Mary with the following words:

Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.

I offer these words to all of those I know and love who envision a better world, or rather, who KNOW the world they came to live in and are now being called to create!  Thank you for heeding this call and thank you for all you will do to restore our world to the Love it was meant to be.

My Magic is This……What is Yours?

Each and every one of us is uniquely gifted to be LOVE in the world. When we came into this world, we knew what our unique gifts were, but through societal conditioning (“writers are a dime a dozen,” “you can’t make a living doing that,” “what you think you are seeing or hearing is only your imagination,” “Good Girls don’t do that!” “Cool or straight boys don’t act or sing or dance…”) we learn to forget, hide, or set aside the magic we came into this world to enjoy and to share.  In order to fit in and to go along with societal expectations, we forget our gifts, but at some point, we realize that what society asks of us is not life-giving or is making us either sick or crazy, so we begin to search. We then spend the next several (many) years of our life trying to find our gifts and then overcoming the fears of actually nurturing, cultivating, enjoying and sharing our gifts….or we remain unfulfilled and/or sick.

Each and every one of us LONGS for a life that is meaningful, fulfilling and which gives us a sense of purpose. It is through our gifts (magic) that we are able to experience this life that we long for.  For me, it has been a 51 year journey of knowing, forgetting, exploring, discovering, learning, growing, healing, transforming and then being empowered in my gifts.  The journey never really ends, but at 51 years old, with confidence I can say what my gifts are (explaining how I use them is a whole other matter!).  I think the image below, which came out of a recent class I was facilitating, pretty much sums it up:

LauriMagic

As one dear friend once acknowledged, “Lauri, your gift is hearing the truth beyond the words.” I have also come to understand that this is also true of my vision – I can SEE the truth beyond the illusion.  In the language of spiritual gifts, these abilities fall under the category of “discernment.”  I then use these abilities in my work as a teacher and a counselor – also spiritual gifts.  Knowledge is one of my spiritual gifts (magic) which is further supported by my love of learning.  Contemplation (prayer) is one of my gifts and helps to support me in all that I have mentioned above.  Put all of these gifts together and they further support my magic of being a leader and a visionary, a pastor and a prophet. It is the prophecy part that often gets me into trouble.

Prophets, as I have learned, are not those who predict the future, we are those who are able to “read the sign of the times” – who are able to see where society is going if things remain on their current path. We are then called to SEE and SPEAK the better way – the way of correction, if you will.  We see where reform is needed and we are called to live that reform and share it with other.  The place I have ultimately called to be prophet to….is what we have traditionally called “church.”  Specifically, moving beyond the institutions to Jesus’ original message of LOVE  – reclaiming that message and doing what Jesus originally called us to do – to support each other in becoming self-actualized.  This takes Jesus’ universal message out of the hands of power and privilege and brings it out into the world where ALL can benefit from this LOVE – no matter what one’s personal beliefs might be.

This is what I have come to understand to be my MAGIC. What is yours?

Your Mission in Life

Your Mission in Life

Each and every one of us is uniquely gifted to find meaning, purpose and fulfillment in our lives – for our own sake, and ultimately for the betterment of the world. Every prophet who has gone before us heralded this message – first about themselves, then about the audience to whom they were speaking, and then in anticipation of the prophets who would come after them.  As you read the following words from Isaiah, imagine that it is about you that he is speaking.  Then reflect on, how you are called to live out this mission in your life!

Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, Upon whom I have put my Spirit; he shall bring forth justice to the nations, Not crying out, not shouting, not making his voice heard in the street. A bruised reed he shall not break, and a smoldering wick he shall not quench, Until he establishes justice on the earth; the coastlands will wait for his teaching. Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spreads out the earth with its crops, Who gives breath to its people and spirit to those who walk on it: I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice, I have grasped you by the hand; I formed you, and set you as a covenant of the people, a light for the nations, To open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness.

Isaiah 42: 1-7

Poem of the Awakened (aka the Prophet’s Lament)

From today’s scripture readings:

The Lord GOD has given me
a well-trained tongue,
that I might know how to speak to the weary
a word that will rouse them.
Morning after morning
he opens my ear that I may hear;
and I have not rebelled,
have not turned back.
I gave my back to those who beat me,
my cheeks to those who plucked my beard;
my face I did not shield
from buffets and spitting.

The Lord GOD is my help,
therefore I am not disgraced;
I have set my face like flint,
knowing that I shall not be put to shame.

Isaiah 50: 4-7

It seems Isaiah and I would have a lot to say to each other.  Here, is my

Poem of the Awakened (aka The Prophet’s Lament)

Standing on the edge of fear,

Having chosen the path of my truth.

In service to love.

For my own sake

and for the betterment of the world.

Obstacles at every turn.

Adversaries whispering doubt in my ear.

Tempting me to turn away from

what only my heart can know.

A voice crying out in the wilderness

speaking only to sand?

Yet with each step forward…

every movement toward love…

every step in the direction of truth…

A sonic boom reverberates through the universe –

A tidal wave

transforming the darkness

to love instead of fear.

While few, in fact, have ears to hear,

The power of love is greater than the power of fear.

And truth wins out in the end.

Witness to the World’s Destruction

The world is on the path to its own destruction and there is nothing we can do but stand as witness, and hopefully when it is all said and done, be a source of support for those left standing.

destruction pixabay

Yesterday morning, we were graced with the beauty of a late-winter snowfall.  At 7:30 am, I went outside to shovel the sidewalk and steps up to my house in preparation for my morning Authentic Freedom Mastery course.  As soon as I stepped outside, I was hit with a powerful blast of pressurized energy that set my heart pounding and my head spinning.  The vertigo was so intense it was I could do not to pass out as I finished shoveling the walk.  After I completed my task, I clawed my way back into the house and laid on the floor hoping to stop the spinning.  Then the migraine hit – one of those axe-to the head migraines that insists, “You’d better cancel your whole day because you won’t be able to get off the couch.”  So I did.  Then I spent the day raging and writhing, venting and weeping, generally feeling sorry for myself, for everything and for nothing.  When I woke up this morning with the migraine hang-over and still feeling shaky and disoriented, I thought to myself, “not again.  I’m really getting tired of this shit!”  Then I prayed.  What I saw in my prayer shook me to the bone and the body-wracking sobs that poured out of me helped me to understand that it was not my own pain I have been feeling with these recurring migraines.  Instead, it is the pain of the world – specifically, the pain of a world on the path of its own self-destruction.

There it is.  The prophet’s apocalyptic call that most will choose not to hear, or will simply call me out as crazy for seeing and speaking the truth.  But you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to see where we are headed as a species if we don’t QUICKLY and DRAMATICALLY change our course.  Yes, I (we) know exactly what the world needs to do to change its course, but I’ve (we’ve) been singing THAT song for 15 years now and the world continues to turn a deaf ear.  Every single minute of every single day, people are choosing fear over love and as a collective, we are reaping the fruits of that choice – the fruits being the dead and rotting corpses of the mindless zombies we have become, attracted to noise and driven by an endless hunger for flesh.  As it turns out, the flesh we are consuming is our own, and it doesn’t appear that this is going to be changing anytime soon.  (Where is Rick when we need him?)

Cue the music video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9Dg-g7t2l4

So what are the prophets and a mystics to do when the world seems hell-bent on its own destruction?  There is really nothing more we can do but resolve ourselves to this fact, then stand by as witness as the world based in fear continues to choose fear, destroying itself in the process.  For those who will be lost in this fear, we grieve.  For what will be lost in this fear, we weep.  For the fear that is driving this destruction, we mourn.  And then we wait.  We wait in silent witness to the destruction and we wait in hope for those who will be awakened through this loss.  And when they awaken, we stand as teachers and guides, as sources of healing and support as together we work in building the new world that will seek to be born out of the ashes.

The Greatest Christmas Gift Ever!

Behold, this is a time of great promise being fulfilled. The journey is over and done. The great task for which we have been set on this plane is accomplished. Our mission complete. We have doggedly pursued the vision/mission/call of our Souls and in many ways, we have died for the sake of this mission – died to our false selves, died to our ego, died to illusion, fear, hatred, ignorance and most importantly: separation. We have faced criticism, condemnation, ridicule and rejection. We have walked through valleys of burning coal and stood toe to toe with SATAN (the inner adversary) himself. In spite of our fears, in spite of the loves we had to leave behind, in spite of the excruciating emotional, mental and physical pain we have endured…..we are still here, breathing and alive as we now stand victorious for all that we have endured, with nothing but faith and some sort of blind hope that all would not be in vain.

Mary Magdalene by Catherine E. Case
Mary Magdalene by Catherine E. Case

With every fiber of my being, I feel the truth of this message. I see the seeds I/we have planted, having already taken root, now beginning to bear fruit. I feel the expanse of love that has taken over our world in spite of the fear and hatred that tries to dampen its cause. I see the faces of people CHANGING. No longer set fast by fear or arms crossed in separation, but looking on in wonder, asking the question, “Could there really be something more than this? Could life be softer, gentler, kinder, more loving? Could people turn to one another in wonder and awe, seeking to understand and honor our differences while honoring our common desire to be safe, and to feel loved?” I see it. I feel it. I know it. And it is because of our effort, because of our willingness to hold fast to the call of love, that this transformation has taking place and will continue to unfold. As I read this morning’s gospel, these words from Zechariah, I knew that what I was sending was true….and I knew it by the ocean of tears I shed in receiving these words – tears not of grief, but of celebration and relief. My Christmas gift to you is that you receive these words for yourself (translating them to fit your own personal beliefs please!) Merry Christmas and thank you for being part of the greatest Christmas present EVER!

“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; for he has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty Savior, born of the house of his servant David. Through his prophets he promised of old that he would save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us. He promised to show mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hand of our enemies, free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, to give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Luke 1: 67-79

Wake Up People!

A prophet arrives on the scene when it is time for humanity to make a change.  Well, it is LONG PAST time to make a change!  It is time to WAKE UP people!  No more fighting.  No more war.  No more hunger.  No more racism.  No more sexism.  NO MORE WAR!  No more destruction of the vital planet that feeds, clothes and shelters us!  No more hatred.  No more ignorance.  No more fear.

childpixabay

I don’t care what side of the political fence you are on….you can’t possibly be interested in the continuation of violence, hatred and war in our world, and if you are, then I have great compassion for the fear that lives in your heart that makes you believe violence is the only answer.

Violence is not the answer.  LOVE is.  And I’m not the first to know and believe this.  Neither am I the only one.  In fact, I believe that we who believe in the power of love have now reached critical mass and there are more who believe in love than those who believe in fear.

If you are one who believes in love, then now is the time to SHOW YOUR LOVE.  Raise your voice.  Speak the love that you know in your heart.  BE THE LOVE.  Use the amazing and powerful gifts God/dess gave you to help build the new world….

BECAUSE THE TIME IS NOW!  Wake up from your sleep.  Wake up from your silence and SING the love that wants to be born in the world.

And here’s a little help from one of my generation’s greatest prophets.
