Two-thousand years ago, a Jewish man fell in love with the mystical teachings of his faith – teachings about love, compassion, and oneness. In his love of his faith, he discovered an intimate relationship with the Divine who he called “Abwoon” – meaning all that is. He felt the love of this Divine being as the love of a parent for their child – and even more so. In this love, the man found peace, contentment and joy along with the means by which he could experience “heaven on earth.” In his excitement of this discovery, this Jewish man did what every rabbi did before him; he sought to teach others what he had learned.
He taught where all rabbis taught – in the synagogue, in the courtyard of the Temple, in the fields, on the hillsides and near the shores of the living waters. He was invited to dinner in people’s homes and he taught there. He taught wherever there were those “with ears to hear.” In his wanderings, he attracted a company of women and men who chose to follow him so that they might learn even more from this man who knew and showed great love.
In this company of women and men, there was a very special woman, Mary, from the house of Lazarus. She along with her brother Lazarus and sister Martha, became Jesus’ devoted students, learning all he could share with them, while gaining insights and revelations of their own. Mary took to Jesus’ teachings in a unique and special way. Soon, Mary and Jesus became one. Mary understood the depth of what Jesus had come to know in a way unique from the others and in this, she too became teacher.
When Jesus was arrested, put on trial and murdered, Mary was there by his side. With the other women and a few brave men, they stood watch and offered prayers of support for Jesus as he suffered and died. They never left his side. When Jesus’ body was removed from the cross, Mary and the other women anointed his body for burial, wrapped it in linen cloths and offered the requisite prayers of burial. When the stone was rolled in front of the entrance to the burial cave, the women wailed. They cried. The tore their hair and clawed at the ground. In tending to their own grief and to the horrors of Jesus’ dying, they created space in which new life could begin.
And it did. Three days later, Jesus rose from the dead and appeared to Mary. She saw and she believed. And then Jesus did a remarkable thing – he appointed Mary, now called Magdalene, “Tower of the flock.” Mary was ordained and sent forth to continue Jesus’ mission in his stead. He did not give over his mission to the men who remained hiding in the Upper Room. He gave it to the woman who had the willingness to be emptied of all within her that might hinder her from knowing anything other than LOVE. He gave it to the woman who was free enough of ego to stand face to face with her greatest fear – the torture, suffering and death of her beloved and to have the courage to trust that even in this greatest loss, new life would emerge.
Mary was the new life. Mary, now called Magdalene, went forth to share with the other disciples the good news and to continue what Jesus began – supporting the disciples and anyone else with ears to hear – in the mission of Love.
But then, patriarchy stepped in. Unwilling to let go of their fear of the patriarchal cultural norm and unwilling to set aside their egos enough to remember the equality that Jesus taught, the disciples rejected Mary’s message. “This is the ravings of a woman. Jesus’ could not have risen from the dead. What does that even mean?” Then Mary showed them. She showed them how they could see Jesus and experience his presence, his guidance and his teachings. They saw a glimpse, but they did not experience the fullness of what Mary described and then they became jealous. They asked Mary why Jesus would appear to her and not to them. How could he love her more than they? Mary tried to explain, and Jesus through her. But still the disciples could not accept that Jesus would choose her over them. So they cast her out.
Mary then went on her own way, with Lazarus and Martha beside her, the other women, along with a couple of the men who believed, and did what Jesus ordained her to do. She continued in the mission of Love.
The other disciples tell it differently. It is to Peter that Jesus gave the mission of building the new church (a church Jesus never spoke of building), and the purpose of this church was salvation. Only those who believed as the disciples told it would be welcome into paradise at the end of time – totally forgetting that the only kingdom Jesus spoke of what the one right here in our midst when we are free enough of our fears to know Love. Sadly the Love Jesus taught was forgotten and replaced instead by fear.
This fear is the patriarchal wound of Christianity. Fear born out of jealousy. When the disciples cast out the woman Jesus ordained to continue in his stead, they cast out all women. No longer reflecting the balance between masculine and feminine that Jesus favored, the Church became the distortion of love. Instead of being rooted in the Oneness that Jesus preached, the new Church was based in separation and fear, power, control and privilege. Like the patriarchal culture in which they were raised, the men created a hierarchical, patriarchal institution where those in power are lauded as better than the rest and where salvation was the privilege of the few who would obey their commands. What we have today is a sad and broken institution whose fear comes out sideways in gluttony, lust for power, wrath, envy, greed, sloth, and the worst of these – pride. Here children are raped and the offender excused, women are denied their rightful place as teachers and guides, our humanness (including our sexuality) is demonized, and instead of people living in LOVE, they are cowering in fear.
Embracing Mary Magdalene changes all that! In place of fear we find love. Instead of hierarchy we discover collaboration. Instead of power over, we have power with. Not because of Mary, now called Magdalene, but because of what she represents – the core of Jesus’ message which is LOVE. But this message of Love is not even about Jesus – it is about the truth of our Source, our original nature, ourselves, all of creation, and that which some might call God. Love is who we are. Love is all there is. When we remember as Jesus and Mary Magdalene remembered, then there will be peace and we will fulfill our mission as humans which is to discover heaven on earth. So mote it be! Amen!

In this post I share what came through in our monthly Authentic Freedom (dot) Love ZOOM gathering. As the fearful and vocal minority hasten the destruction of the world based in fear, power and control, the 5.39 billion majority are standing at the ready quietly bringing forth the new world.
We spoke last night of all the violence and hatred in our world, along with the inverted distribution of power. The 1% of the 1% seemingly making all the decisions and getting rich off these decisions while the rest of the world suffers. It is like a pyramid with a shiny gold tip – where the power brokers live and plan while the rest of us (the other 99% of the pyramid) work to make them rich. The collective outcry in all of this is “I didn’t vote for this” – meaning NO ONE wants to see the destruction of education, increasing limits on access to healthcare, and most of all – NO ONE wants to go to war.
Sadly, the latter is where we seem to be headed. Not because any of us want it – but because that shiny gold tip of the pyramid gets rich off of war – war is a HUGE money maker – for those who hold the gold and therefore are making the rules.
BUT – as we discussed last night, this is only the part we are being shown. The loud distractions and outcries of a dying system clinging to what (they think) is left of their power. Creating conflict where there is none. Directing the media focus toward “bad news” while filling our bodies with numbing foods and our sight with what “they” want us to believe is the American Ideal. For those of us who are awake, there is no one we are interested in “Keeping up with” but ourselves. And yet, as was once said about Kramer’s portrait on Seinfeld, “It is loathsome and hideous, and yet I cannot look away.”
This is what they want us to see. This is what the sleeping masses are choosing to see. And yet, this vocal minority is just this – the vocal minority. While the dying system clings to what is left of their power (the ability to make people afraid through the media), 99% (well, at least 70%) of us (the bottom of the pyramid) are awake, aware, and quietly doing our work to build the new world that will come forth out of the ash of the old world once it finally dies! AMEN!
Our children are doing their part as well. As I met with the “magical children” yesterday afternoon, I was reminded that they SEE the world. They SEE through the bullshit and they are quietly observing everything that is wrong with the current world and how they will choose otherwise when it is finally their turn.
I can tell you THEY CANNOT WAIT for it to be their turn. They already know what their world will look like – access to quality education (including college) for all, an end to prejudice and injustice, universal healthcare, and no more war.
Where the old world sees and seeks out conflict, our youth are seeking understanding.
They (the ones I know anyway) were born in a state of unity consciousness – seeing no separation between race, religion, sexual orientation, etc. They see all people as one and do not understand why the rest of the world cannot figure this out. Sounds familiar, right!?
We know our mission. We know why we are here. We are here to bear witness to the dying world and to hold the space in which the new world can be planted, take root and grow. The miracle in all of this is that much of our “work” is already done, and so much more is being done. Yet to the dying world – WE ARE INVISIBLE! As we learned last night, THIS IS ON PURPOSE. Our work is being veiled. We are being protected. We and our efforts are only being seen by those who are able to see. To the rest of the world, it’s almost like we do not exist – or at the very least we are looked upon as insane, and therefore irrelevant. But we are not irrelevant and we are here. In fact – WE ARE THE MAJORITY. As the 1% work on destroying themselves, we are quietly, peacefully, subversively planting the seeds for a new world. When we look at our world through this lens, our efforts are evident and in many cases, bearing fruit. If I’m being conservative, that is 70% of 7.7 billion –
5.39 billion standing at the ready and quietly bringing forth the new world.
And critically important for the survival of the human race.
Thank you my sisters and brothers for doing your part in bringing forth the new world – most commonly just by your very presence. It’s most often not what we do that is causing the change – it is simply who we are. Thank you!
This is the grand test. If you, like me and like all those to whom I minister, and my brothers and sisters on this journey) are here to support the birth of a new world…..things are getting INTENSE! If we thought it has been rough before…..hang on to your hats! This, as they say, is where the rubber meets the road. And it is entirely (in the worlds (words) of one of my mentors, Lauren C. Gorgo), “an inside job.”
It goes something like this:
- Shit happens.
- We find ourselves triggered (fear, anxiety, anger, rage, self-righteousness, grief, overwhelm, helplessness) by the shit.
- Then we DO something about the shit.
BUT….it is not about going “out there” to change things. Oh no! It is about going WITHIN to identify the unhealed wound in ourselves that is being triggered by the shit “out there.” Then it is about doing the work we have practiced soooooo long to heal and transform that wound. Meditation. Prayer. Chanting. Reiki. Shamanic healing practices. Movement. Journaling. Etc. etc. etc. Now it is time to get out all of our tools and USE THEM to heal ourselves.
Then as soon as we heal one wound, another shows up to take its place. This current cycle of transformation is RELENTLESS. It keeps coming and when we think we can breathe a sigh of relief, it comes again. This is the real shit!
The energy is relentless because time is of the essence. We are quickly approaching the death of the old world paradigm and the new world is getting ready to take its place.
But it sure doesn’t feel like the promise of new life right now. It feels like death….because that is exactly what it is. The death of the patriarchy and of all of humanity’s wounds related to patriarchal fear, power and control. We are transforming these wounds within ourselves – not only for ourselves, but for the sake of the whole entire world. It is like Christian theologians say about Jesus – “he took on the sins of the world and died for the sake of those sins.” Personally, I no longer belief that Jesus died for our sins as some sort of sacrifice, but when put in the context of transformation, I can see how this is true. In moving through his own pain and fear of separation and transforming that in the resurrection, he did the same for all of humanity.
This is what we too are called to do. Again, not as a sacrifice….but in saving ourselves, we are supporting the salvation of our world. When we heal ourselves of our patriarchal wounds, we are supporting others in the same healing. Soon, the patriarchy will no longer have the power to trigger our fears and our fears have been healed.
BUT….knowing all this does not make this RELENTLESS Intensity any better. It is excruciating. Jesus Christ, it is hard. And yet, the only way out is through.
This is the grand test. It is the Universe (our Soul) asking us again, “Are you sure you’re up for this? Wouldn’t you rather just fold and go back to the life of blissful ignorance you enjoyed before waking up to your Divine gifts and calling?” On many days, I can assure you I want to say yes to blissful ignorance. But as soon as I think that’s the choice I’m going to make, my SOUL steps in on my behalf and pulls me back onto the path. It seems, we don’t really get to say no. Like it or not, we are here for a reason. We signed up for this. We don’t get to quit. (dammit!)
So brothers and sisters – put on your big girl/boy panties. Tighten your boot straps and get to work. Stay true to your path and do not let the “devil” take you from your path. We are in this together and if you forget this truth….reach out to those you know who LOVE YOU, who value your gifts, who appreciate your vulnerability and who will hold you in your fear, anguish and pain until you are ready to once again hold yourself. YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
Money is one of the grand tools used by the Patriarchy to manipulate and control us through fear. Heal your money wounds and be free of this conditioning:

For thousands of y ears, we’ve been deceived about the meaning and value of money. With the advent of patriarchal culture, the overall message around money has been:
Pay or be punished.
Pay or be killed.
And the more subtle: if you don’t spend money on this item, you will not be loved (because without it you are not pretty enough, skinny enough, fashionable enough, successful enough, etc. etc. etc. )
Whether propagated by our feudal lords, rulers and kings, the government or the Church, (or advertising) the message has been the same – you will be punished or killed if you do not pay those who are “over” you. When patriarchy destroyed the existing egalitarian norm, money suddenly became a tool for manipulation and control wrapped in a cloak of fear.
This was not the original intention of or use for money. In an earlier time, money was created simply as a means of exchange – specifically as a way for one person to say:
“Thank you for the product of service I have just received in support of my needs and here is something through which you can express thanks to the person who next provides a product or service in support of your needs.”
Money was simply a way of saying “Thank you,” while supporting the next person in doing the same. In this money was not the “price” or “cost” (words implying punishment or deprivation) of goods and services, it was an offering of gratitude and support for those who were supporting others in getting their needs met. This model reflected mutuality, along with a fair exchange. Here no one suffered lack because the money continued its movement from one individual to the next as people shared their unique gifts with those meant to enjoy them.
As we continue to move through the death of the patriarchy, perhaps money and our relationship with it is one of those things we are being invited to transform.
What are your beliefs/attitudes around money?
Is your relationship with money rooted in fear or gratitude (do you feel pressure to pay your bills and fear around those payments or are you writing your check from a place of gratitude for the services given?)
Reflect on how you spend your money. Where do you see yourself feeling pressured to purchase things you do not really need, instead of channeling your “offerings” toward that which you actually need or would benefit from?
How are you being invited to transform those beliefs from punishment to gratitude?
Yesterday I was given a very important reminder: the world that is dying is not my concern.
Before you get your activist undies in a bundle, please allow me to explain:
For 5000+ years, we have languished under patriarchal rule, defined here as that which has been based in fear, power and control. This cultural paradigm has harmed all of us – women, children and men alike. This paradigm has deprived us of the inner wisdom and knowledge of the feminine, along with the feminine gifts of gathering and building through cooperation and collaboration, with an eye toward peace and harmony. This paradigm has also deprived us of the holy aspects of the masculine traits of guardianship, provision, protection and support.
This world, based in fear, power and control is dying. It is in the midst of its own collapse and it needs to die.
As we look out there toward the dying world, it is easy to get caught up in our reactions to those things we believe will cause us harm or deprive us of certain rights and liberties. It is easy to jump to conclusions about the meaning and outcome of certain actions and events. We are tempted to cast judgment, which then triggers our anger and fear.
All of these reactions tempt us away from the Truth – that all of those things we see “out there” that are arising out of fear, power and control, are merely the old world in its death throes. Giving our energy, attention and reactions to the dying world tempts us away from the job we are supposed to be doing – building the new world.
If you are reading this blog, you are one, among millions, who are here to help build the new world. Period. We are not here to rescue the old world. We are not here to stitch up or bandage its wounds. We are not here to administer medication so the old world can put off its necessary and long overdue death. We are not even here to watch. The world that is dying is not our concern.
Instead, our mission on this planet is to build the new world. We do this by holding our attention and focus on the vision of what we came here to create, not allowing anything to distract us from this vision. We do this by connecting with and gathering with others who are also called to build the new world. And we do this by holding space for those who are ready to leave the old world behind and join the movement that is intent on building something new.

For over 2000 years, the bible has been interpreted through the lens of the patriarchal, hierarchical male. Not anymore! Through this course, Discovering the Goddess through Biblical Women, Lauri Ann Lumby, OM, MATS, peels back the veil of patriarchy, revealing the presence of the Goddess in the archetypal roles played by biblical women throughout HERstory.
Each day, through the duration of the course, you will receive a brief history of a great woman of biblical history, along with reflections on how these women provide powerful examples and models for each of us to follow. You will meet and spend time with thirty different women of the Judeo-Christian scripture, beginning with Eve – Mother of All the Living and concluding with Mary Magdalene – Priestess and Beloved of Christ. These are women who have endured struggle, tragedy, violence, heartbreak, and who have been victors in the end. Whether they died for their cause (Lot’s wife) or became a queen (Esther), they were powerful women who reveal the face of the Goddess. Through these biblical women, we see the Goddess, in seeing the Goddess, we begin to see ourselves. In viewing the biblical women in this way, we have an opportunity to rescue these women from HIStory and shed new light on their stories, this time, as Goddesses in their own right.
Today’s blog continues the discussion about authority, and specifically addresses the question: Who will actually help to bring about change? In short – it will NOT be the one who currently holds the gold.
He who holds the gold…
There is an old saying, “He who holds the gold makes the rules.” Historically, there has been something very true about this statement. Those with power and control are those making the rules. We, the peons who work our butts off so that those in power can remain in power, are then expected to KEEP QUIET, DO WHAT WE ARE TOLD, SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP. In the U.S., for example, our government was initially set up so that we, the peons, would actually have power and control through the work of the officials we elect to represent us in policy making decisions. Well…..those days are long gone! These days are so long gone, in fact, that it isn’t even our elected officials who are making the decisions, but powerful corporations and special interest groups who are coercing and sometimes paying for decisions to be made in their interest….not in the interest of the American people, and surely not in the interest of the larger global community.
Too much to lose
You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see that the rules generated by those holding the gold are no longer working. In fact, if we continue on the current trajectory the very survival of our species is in question. This is true in all institutional arrangements – government, corporate, religious, education, medicine, banking, etc. And, this current arrangement which is working really well for those in power and control, but not working at all for the general population or the larger global community, is not about to change – not at the hands of those in power and control anyway. Those who are currently holding the gold have too much to lose because in the current paradigm, they are (typically the only) the ones reaping the benefits of a hierarchical/patriarchal institutional structure ruling mostly through intimidation and fear. (note, this intimidation and fear can be very subtle and insidious…..have you paid attention to advertising for example, all designed to make us feel we aren’t enough, don’t have enough, and that we won’t be loved and accepted if we don’t have said advertised product.)
The Power of a few (who are in fact, the majority)
I am not without hope, however. For the REAL power, you see, is in OUR hands. “The tired, the poor, the huddled masses,” and masses we are. We, the peons, far outnumber those who are in power. The problem is that we have remained silent for far too long! We have bought into the manipulations of those in power and control and in doing so, we have lost our voice. Well, we don’t need to be silent any longer. In fact, our very survival depends on our ability to find our voices and SPEAK on behalf of the real needs of our world. What we don’t need is to know what Kim Kardashian wore to the grocery today, the “next best Apple device,” the “guaranteed weight loss cure,” to “lose ten years off our face through expensive and unnecessary cosmetic surgery.” We also don’t need to wage another war, plant another crop laden with genetically altered seeds, kill another honeybee, destroy another piece of land through fracking, kill off another species or allow another human being to go hungry or homeless. Instead, what we need are:
1) to feel safe in our world
2) to discover our own uniquely creative contribution to bettering our world and finding fulfillment through this contribution
3) to feel empowered toward making positive change
4) to know that we are loved and accepted for who we are
5) to have the freedom to express our truths
6) to feel confident in making prudent decisions reflective of our own unique place in the world
7) to know that we are not alone
It starts with you
The process of facilitating positive change in the world begins with ourselves. First, through our own process of self-discovery and self-actualization, we need to find the fulfillment of the above needs within ourselves. Once we have identified our own uniquely creative gifts, THEN it is our job to SHARE THEM. And when we all come together in sharing our uniquely creative gifts, change can’t help but happen. The good news is that we have a whole history of positive change movements led by authentically powerful leaders who have first done this inner work themselves, and then empowered others to do the same – St. Francis of Assisi, Teresa of Avila, Martin Luther, Dorothy Day, Oscar Romero, Mother Teresa, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr. oh yeah….the Buddha, Moses, Mohammed, Jesus, etc. etc. etc. Positive change starts with one person taking care of their own inner needs, then inviting others to do the same. And sometimes, when a group of people gather with this common intention….amazing things start to happen and then suddenly someone else is holding the gold and generously sharing it with others.

Today’s blog addresses the current stage of our human evolution which is quickly (and not so peacefully) replacing hierarchical, patriarchal authority with something of another sort all together. As we witness the destruction of all that has been founded on the patriarchal/hierarchical/power-over model, we must ask the question, what will authority look like in the new world? Well, it is probably already happening right underneath our noses.
It’s a man’s world, white male privilege, women acting like patriarchal men, and the glass ceiling
Having worked in the patriarchy of all patriarchies and the hierarchy of all hierarchies (the Catholic Church) and having lived 10 years before that as a peon in corporate America, I have first-had knowledge and experience of what DOES NOT work in the form of leadership. And it goes something like this:
“I’m the boss (most often male, or a woman acting like a man) and you will do what I tell you to do. Period. And don’t you dare to question or challenge me or there will be hell (sometimes literally) to pay!”
This is usually followed up with an unspoken, “Do as I say but not as I do” attitude.
Top-down leadership, driven by power and control, most often motivated through intimidation and fear, covered over with a lot of hypocrisy. Then the “boss” runs off on his pleasure trip of China and the Far East while the peons are left behind making WAY less than “the boss,” if they are getting paid at all (as often happens in the Church).
As anyone who is not in these positions of power and privilege can attest, this form of leadership DOES NOT WORK. In short, this is NOT how you get happy, healthy employees, enthusiastically willing to share their gifts and talents in service to the corporate/Church mission. Instead, you get disgruntled, unhappy, frustrated, anxiety ridden employees, just trying to make ends meet in a dog-eat-dog world, daydreaming about how they might stab you (the boss) in the back.
Times are a changin’
The good news is that this model of leadership is dying….and quickly. While it may not look like it – as our government ( GUILTY) plunges into more and more corruption, corporations are quickly trying to destroy the world (Monsanto, Military contractors, the Koch brothers, Big Oil, AMA, FDA, APA, and all the other alphabet soup companies) and the Church chases after women religious instead of cleaning up their own act – it IS happening. The more a new paradigm of authority peeks out its compassionate head, the more tightly those structures built on power and control cling to their power. This situation is very much like what my mother used to say about cleaning the kitchen, “The kitchen will get dirtier first before it starts getting clean.”
A new model of authority
The new model of authority, is really not so new. In fact, I believe it is exactly the kind of authority modeled by Jesus. Instead of a model based on power and control, top-down leadership, driven by intimidation and fear, what Jesus modeled was leadership based in SERVICE and SUPPORT. Jesus led, not by telling people what to do. Instead, he showed them through his own actions. And then, he supported them in doing the same. Jesus didn’t motivate people through fear. Instead, he showed them unconditional love and compassion. He helped them to love themselves in the same way and in doing so, helped them to uncover their unique giftedness, and then through his gentle encouragement and healing presence, helped them to heal the fears that were obstacles to fully utilizing those gifts. Then, Jesus empowered them to use their gifts in service to the betterment of the world. Instead of a hierarchical model of leadership, what Jesus modeled was one that doesn’t even have a name – one in which the leader stands beneath those he/she leads, upholding them in becoming a leader in their own right. And guess what, in Jesus’ model of leadership, women are given the same service and support as men and are empowered to fulfill their own magnificence – while honoring their own way of being female – in other words, in Jesus’ model, women don’t have to become like hierarchical men in order to find success. Oh yeah….and if we apply Jesus’ model of leadership to our current means of exchange, everyone is getting paid a just wage.
What model of authority would you like to see in the new world?
