Transforming Your World from Fear into Love

The mission of Authentic Freedom Academy is to support you in transforming your world from fear into love. We (myself, along with the women and men who have completed my Authentic Freedom Mastery program) accomplish this through a wide range of offerings:  this blog, books, one-on-one mentoring, online and local courses, and service to the local community.  Here is how we do it:

LOVE is your original nature. You were made from love and for the purpose of love.  LOVE is all you once knew.  Then you forgot.  You forgot the love that you are and you forgot that your purpose in this life is LOVE.  This forgetfulness has caused you fear, and through this fear, you have experienced suffering.  You LONG to return to “that which you cannot name,” but which is ultimately LOVE.  Unfortunately, we don’t often know that what we are searching for is the love that is our original nature, so we turn outside of ourselves in search of the fulfillment to this longing.  We look for it in money, achievement, success, fame, wealth, power, acquisitions, sex, and in what we think might be love but most often ends up being co-dependency.  We might temporarily feel satisfied in our longing through the acquisition of one of the above, but ultimately, this satisfaction is fleeting which causes us to seek for more.  We think that there is something “out there” that will make this longing go away – the cessation of war, the victory of our chosen political candidate, an end to hunger, our book making the “best seller’s list,” meeting our “soulmate,” the job of our dreams, better health insurance, a boss who appreciates us, a Democratic majority in Congress, legalized marijuana, etc. etc. etc.  Again and again and again we find that nothing “out there” changes a thing.  We are still hungry, bored, restless, unsatisfied, lonely, unfulfilled, longing for something more. But still, we never stop searching…..

That is, until life brings us to our knees, and we realize that there is nothing “out there” that will make us whole. We will only find satisfaction in turning inward to the LOVE that has always been there.  As it turns out, this LOVE is the remedy to all of our longing and the satisfaction to all of our pain.  The irony is that once we discover REMEMBER this LOVE, we realize how truly simple the human experience really is.  And this is it:

In every moment of every day, we have a choice: FEAR or LOVE.

Period. End of story.  This is all there is.  Choose LOVE or choose FEAR.  Our life experience is then a reflection of this choice.  When we choose fear, our life reflects that choice and becomes a struggle, painful, constricting and small.  When we choose LOVE we find the freedom, expansiveness, peace, contentment, fulfillment and joy that has been there all along.

This is it, the purpose of the entirety of the human experience – to turn from the temporary experience of perceived separation that causes us to FEAR and to REMEMBER the LOVE that we are. Period.  End of story.  It is as simple as that.

What are you going to choose?

Diagnosis – Temporary Insanity

Today’s blog is a little update, a brief weather report of the current evolutionary shift in the universe.  If you are of the language of ascension, resurrection, new world, etc. and your current state feels as if it might be bordering on insanity, then you may find this of interest.  If not….then please, carry on.  🙂

As we are deep in the midst of these crazy earth changes and working our way toward ascension, resurrection, self-actualization, a new world order, or whatever you want to call it, there is an important lesson for all of us to be mindful of…..the insanity we are currently feeling is only temporary and NOT our original, or even, our default natureI was reminded of this by a dear friend as I reached out for support in the hopes of preventing a full-on hurling off the planet as a result of the chaotic blend of energies currently orbiting my world:

“When you’re present, Lauri–smiling and laughing–the whole world is right as rain, I tell you from my experience of you.  I’ve seen you fret a few times, too, and albeit hilarious, I notice it’s not your default nature.”

When I was tempted to feel as if the current state of the universe (at least my personal corner of it), might in fact be permanent, I found these to be comforting words and an important reminder that “this too shall pass.”   While it all feels a bit (a lot bit!) chaotic, as my friend also reminded me, it is all part of the process – and if there is one thing I do know – is to trust the process – no matter how bleak things might appear in the moment.

For me, the way the current state of the universe’s evolution is showing up is in the reappearance of certain vocational questions I long ago thought dead, along with an increasing sense of constriction and anxiety around certain life choices in which I am currently living.  Having walked this path before, it feels as if one thing is trying to be born while another is trying to die.  In the midst of this are a million unanswered questions and more than a million unknowns – all stirring an immeasurable amount of anxiety for the part of me which thinks she needs to be in control, have all the answers and always be right.  Hah….silly girl!

I believe that the chaos I am currently experiencing is reflective of the chaos currently felt by many – a seemingly constant parade of choices – “pick me…..notice me….don’t pick me….you will love doing this…..this is driving you mad,” all vying for our attention and our discernment.  What is life giving? What is not?  What feels supportive of who we are and who God wants us to be?  What feels imprisoning, rife with struggle, suffocating and blech?  It seems that at this stage of our spiritual evolution, we are standing at a crossroads.  Choose life.  Choose death.  Choose joy.  Choose sorrow.  Choose fulfillment.  Choose frustration.  Choose love.  Choose fear.  All the choices are before us, giving us a lived experience of what it would be like to choose any of the above.  Thanks to those who have come before us, we know what it is we are being invited to choose:

“Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!”

Deuteronomy 30:19

Discernment is the skill we are invited to put into practice in navigating these choices.  God’s choice is clear:  CHOOSE LIFE.   Unfortunately, it seems that in this moment, actual choice is NOT AN OPTION.  Instead, all we have is the constant parade of choices and the opportunity to feel what each one will feel like if that would be our choice.  The time right now, while not about choice, is about EXPLORATION.  We are being given an opportunity to have a lived experience of what all these choices feel like so that when the time for choosing comes, we will know what we are called to choose.  In the meantime, we sit within the whirlwind observing, experiencing, and TRUSTING that the great centrifuge of the universe will cast off what is not life-giving in order that we may retain the rest.  In the meantime we wait, and remind our selves that the current insanity we are feeling is only temporary – and that this too shall pass.

Longing, Meaning, Purpose, Connectedness

“Through compassionate listening and attentive presence, I partner with those longing to find meaning, purpose and connectedness in their lives.”  Exploring my new mission statement.

Strategic Planning and Mission Statements

Under an act of Divine intervention and miraculous workings of the Holy Spirit, I have been gifted with five AMAZING and talented individuals who have come together as my self-appointed Board of Directors.  I’m not sure Jesus was so blessed.  😉  We came together with the goal of accomplishing strategic planning for Authentic Freedom Ministries….to help get the word out and to get these products and services into the hands of those who need them.  The first two tasks were completed:  A Vision Statement and a Mission Statement.  (see mission statement above or in the column to the right.)  In the next several days, I will be exploring with you the line items included in the mission statement and how it may be relevant to your own journey and the journey of the others you may know:  Longing, Meaning, Purpose, Connection and Partnering.  Today’s blog is about LONGING.

Holy Longing

At the moment of our conception, God plants within us a DESIRE and a LONGING to go home – to return to our origin in Oneness with God – recognized in our lived human experience as compassion, peace, joy, harmony, justice, mercy and love.  This longing exists to point us to our truest self: the meaning, direction and purpose of our lives, our gifts and how we are called to use them.  In pointing us toward our truth – the person God created us to be,  we come to understand if we are gay, straight or bi-sexual; introverted or extroverted; called to be married or single; religious or not religious; Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Pagan or otherwise;  we come to know our needs and we come to identify and connect with our tribe. – the people with whom we are called to be in community.   Ultimately, this longing draws us toward love – love of God, love of self, love of others and empowers us to be this love in the world.  Ronald Rollheiser, in his book of the same name, calls this desire, Holy Longing.   We might not know what it is or what to call it, but we can sure FEEL it.

Identifying Holy Longing

Identifying this longing is really quite simple and pretty dang obvious.  We can recognize this longing through feelings of:  restlessness, impatience, frustration, rage, anxiety, worry, loneliness and depression.  When we are experiencing any of these states, we can be pretty sure that it is that seed of truth that God planted within us, calling for our attention.  “Come Find Me!” it says.  Restlessness, impatience, frustration, rage, anxiety, worry, loneliness and depression are all inner states that exist in response to something else, in most cases, to truths not yet identified.  Restlessness, impatience and frustration often exist to tell us, “You don’t belong here.  There is a better job/place/relationship/life situation that is more reflective of the person God made you to be.  Rage sometimes appears in situations where we feel powerless.  From the perspective of longing, rage might be there to say, “Stand up for your truth.  Your truth is not being honored here.  YOU are not honoring your truth.”  Anxiety shows up to tell us we are not living in our truth.  Worry comes forward when we think we feel powerless and want to gain some measure of control.  Loneliness shows up when we have forgotten to connect with those activities that generate love, peace, joy and compassion within us – in other words, it is God saying, “Come here and be with me” and our highest self saying, “Come here and let me love you.”  Depression exists as a face of grief and when we have really cut ourselves off from the voice of longing within.

The Purpose of Longing

The purpose of Holy Longing is to:

  • Call us home to our truest selves
  • Draw us toward an intimate connection with God
  • Help us remember love as our original and truest self
  • Draw us toward an awareness of our purpose
  • Help us identify our gifts, to nurture and cultivate them and to empower us to share them
  • Guide us toward fulfillment
  • Lead us toward a life abundant in love, joy, peace, contentment

In other  words, it behooves us to listen to the voice of longing within and tend to it…….it’s task is to lead us to the most amazing things.  Won’t you listen to the voice of longing within?
