Receiving a Vision and Seeing it Through

For many years I have used the Tarot as a source of guidance and support. I do not believe the cards themselves are guiding me, but that the archetypal images are reflecting back to me the deep truths I know in my heart but sometimes cannot see through the intrusions of the mind.  Yesterday morning, at another crossroads in my life, I laid cards.  What came through at once surprised me and affirmed what I have known all along.  I have many times been given a vision of my mission and purpose in this life.  This mission has not changed and is being fulfilled in the timing that can only come from the Divine. As I told a friend on Monday,

“I am very clear on my mission. As the Catholic Church (and other forms of institutional religion) implode upon themselves, I am here as a bridge, a source of comfort and a guide.  I am able to speak the language of the people who will be leaving the Church.  I can be a source of comfort and support for their grief and shock.  I will support them in finding healing from the trauma and break free of co-dependency.  I will provide them with tools in a language with which they are familiar that will empower them in finding their own truth.”

This is the work I have been doing for the past 25 years and the work I will continue to do. In laying cards, this has, once again, been confirmed:

Here were the cards I drew:

The Empress: At the center is the card that represents self. Here, she is the Empress.  The Empress, here represented by St. Helena represents the reception of a vision/mission/purpose and the courage and strength to see it through.  The Empress tells us, “You know what your mission is…..stick with it….be true to your mission….and see it through. In remaining diligent and faithful, it will be fulfilled.

High Priestess: The second card represents the situation we are currently facing. Here, represented by the Magdalene who plays the role of priestess.  The priestess card is all about the inner journey, the esoteric, mystery and intuition. The priestess card presides over the gateway between life and death is able to communicate with “the gods.”  The Priestess tells us to listen to the voice within and act according to its dictates.  She tells us to trust our intuition even (especially) when it makes no logical sense whatsoever.  She reminds me that this is what I am to continue to do for myself, while supporting others in doing the same.

Ten of Staffs: To the right of the two center cards is the card that represents new beginnings and inspiration. Here – the ten of staffs which represent RESURRECTION.  What has died will find new life.  The phoenix will come forth out of the ash.  Considering all the endings and “death” I have experienced in the past many years, I can only take this as a message of great hope and promise, confirming what I have always believed  –  if the Universe is asking so much to come to an end, it must be for the sake of something HUGE.  I welcome whatever that might be.

6 of Cups: At the bottom is the card that presents transition. Connected with the element of fire it represents taking in what is life-giving and letting go of that which no longer serves.  This is the corner of transformation.  As the 6 of cups, this card represents service – specifically service to others.  Here, depicted as Jesus washing the feet of his disciples – a card of humble service and the inversion of hierarchy.  I take this as an invitation to hold true to my commitment and focus on humble service – avoiding the temptations of the ego to place oneself above others as “teacher” or “priest” or “guru” but instead as companion.  We are all on this journey trying to figure our own sh.t out.  If I can help others find themselves in the middle of the debris of our human experience, then I am humbled and grateful to do so.

The Star: The card to the left represents the process of coming into maturity – approaching the fruition of our labors. In the traditional Tarot, this is the Star card, here portrayed by Teresa of Avila in her vision of the interior castle (heaven) and the seven step process of getting there.  This card represents our own ascension (attainment of self-actualization and bringing that into our lived experience.)  It also represents a breakthrough and an opportunity suddenly becoming available.  I’ll take it!

Knight of Swords: The top cards represent the outcome of the journey. The first card, the Knight of Swords, invites us to explore our demons and our attitude toward them.  Are they our enemy and something to be destroyed, or can we find a gentler way of dealing with the perceived obstacles both within and outside of us?  St. George invites me to take the gentle path and to work toward integration and union rather than destruction.  Interestingly this is EXTREMELY relevant at this time in my journey.

Nine of Coins: The final card is the card of true abundance – a spiritual abundance providing material support. It also represents receiving the fruits of our labors. This is the experience I’ve been waiting for….and may it be so!

My Watch is Ended

Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night’s Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.

Once upon a time, I had a mission and a purpose.

Initially, that mission was to support people in discovering and cultivating a personal relationship with Jesus. I discovered this calling and then sought to fulfill it within the embrace of the Catholic Church.

The longer I worked in and for the Church, the more I came to realize the sins of the Institution and made it my task, like Sts. Francis and Clare, to reform the Catholic Church – turning it away from fear, power and control and toward the love of Jesus that inspired its inception.

When this proved to be an unwelcome and impossible task, I turned my gaze outside the Institution and sought to support people in becoming spiritually fulfilled – giving them the tools to discover the answer to the following questions and then empowering them to live out their answers:

  • Who am I?
  • Whose am I?
  • What are my gifts and how am I called to use them for the sake of my own fulfillment and then for the sake of the betterment of the world?

The more I offered this support outside the Church, the more I discovered that these are not religious questions, but universal in nature. These are the questions that are answered in our common journey toward self-actualization. In conjunction with this belief, I believed that if we would all just find our self-actualization that we would have peace and harmony in our lives. With this, my mission became nothing short of saving the world!  No small goals for Lauri Ann Lumby!

The problem, however, is that the world does not want to be saved.

The sad truth is that the majority of humanity is content to live in status quo, desperately clinging to their judgment, fears, perceived separation, need to be right and the need to make someone else wrong. Even as I write this I am aware of my own culpability in this regard, creating my own version of “us and them.”  SIGH!

These are the mountains I used to be willing to die on. These are the battles I fought; the causes I have given my life to; and for which I have risked and lost much.  Like a member of “The Night’s Watch,” I have devoted my life to these causes and offered up similar vows. Toward what end?  Like Jon Snow who was betrayed and then murdered by his own brothers, I find I have no fight left in me.  And like Jon, I turn the cloak I have donned as a champion of Love over to another hand while uttering Jon’s immortal words,

“My Watch is Ended.”

If humanity wants to continue to choose separation, fear, judgment, separation, hatred, violence, war, sickness, poverty, death and despair, who am I to change their mind?  I have no need to convince anyone of anything…even the invitation to peace and love.  I find it is all I can do to find peace myself and to share what I have learned with a few interested souls.  Maybe that is enough for one person’s life, to find their own state of inner peace.  For those who are interested in learning the tools that I have found helpful, I will always be here.  Otherwise, it seems my watch here is ended.

Your Mission in Life

Your Mission in Life

Each and every one of us is uniquely gifted to find meaning, purpose and fulfillment in our lives – for our own sake, and ultimately for the betterment of the world. Every prophet who has gone before us heralded this message – first about themselves, then about the audience to whom they were speaking, and then in anticipation of the prophets who would come after them.  As you read the following words from Isaiah, imagine that it is about you that he is speaking.  Then reflect on, how you are called to live out this mission in your life!

Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, Upon whom I have put my Spirit; he shall bring forth justice to the nations, Not crying out, not shouting, not making his voice heard in the street. A bruised reed he shall not break, and a smoldering wick he shall not quench, Until he establishes justice on the earth; the coastlands will wait for his teaching. Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spreads out the earth with its crops, Who gives breath to its people and spirit to those who walk on it: I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice, I have grasped you by the hand; I formed you, and set you as a covenant of the people, a light for the nations, To open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness.

Isaiah 42: 1-7

Our Own Burning Bush – the Call of the Heavensent

The Lord God said, “I have witnessed your affliction my people and have heard your cries of complaint against your oppressors, so I know well what you are suffering.  Therefore, I have initiated an extraordinary Divine intervention, to rescue you from your oppressors; leading you out of the land of slavery into a good and gracious land, a land flowing with milk and honey.

Exodus 3: 7-8

Moses and the Burning Bush

These are the words of the great “I AM” spoken to Moses, several thousand years ago through the burning bush.  In these words were the Lord’s invitation to the Israelite people to leave behind the life of slavery that they had known under Egyptian rule and to embark upon a journey of freedom to a land as yet unknown which the Lord promised would be “flowing with milk and honey.”

Our own Burning Bush

As much as these were God’s words to the Israelites several thousand years ago, these are God’s words for us TODAY as we suffer under the oppression of our own slavery.  In this case, the oppression God is inviting us to escape is the slavery of fear and the specific ways in which fear has come to rule our inner lives and the ways in which fear has manifest in our world in its various guises of consumerism, racism, discrimination, sexism, separation, hatred, environmental collapse, corporate greed, government corruption, violence and war. The Lord knows well how the world has suffered under the imprisonment of fear and as such, has initiated an extraordinary Divine intervention which promises to turn the world of fear into a world of love.  And the great thing is that this new world that we are envisioning doesn’t require an exodus from where we are now.  The land of milk and honey is right here in our very midst, if we but have the courage to set aside fear and instead, to choose love.

A Million Moses’

The extraordinary Divine intervention that God has initiated is in the form of what I will call today “A million Moses’.”  The million Moses’ are all those on the planet who were gifted before they were even conceived, with the vision of a new world and who were born with both the knowing of what this world could look like and the passion to help make it happen.   I have called these men, women and children “The Heavensent,” for that is exactly what they are – sent by God to turn the world from fear into love.  You already know who you are. You have carried within you a vision for a better world.    You know at the very deepest part of your being that the vision of the new world that you carry within you is possible.  You possess the desire and the passion to want to do something about it and to be a part of making the new world real. Consider this your call….your own burning bush.  You are the Heavensent.  You are one of the million Moses’. Open your heart to how God is specifically calling you to help bring forth a world made of love, no longer controlled by fear.  Knowing that the journey of billions starts with you – become familiar with your own inner fears and how they are controlling your life.  Find tools for transcending those fears so that your inner terrain will be defined by contentment and love.  Make decisions based in love instead of fear.  Know freedom within yourself so that you can become acquainted with your own uniquely creative gifts through which you will find meaning, purpose and fulfillment and through which you will contribute to the betterment of the world.  Then grab your staff and your wand and start sharing your magic so that others may also be free.

Thank you for your help!

Remembering our Mission and our Purpose

On the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and as we give honor to his work and his civil rights legacy, we are invited to reflect on our own call to action.  What is the purpose and mission to which we are called and through which we are empowered to serve the betterment of our world?

The Book of Remembrance

The prophet Malachi spoke of the Book of Remembrance in which God wrote about all those who revered the Lord (Malachi 3:16).  Malachi wrote of this Book of Remembrance during a time and within a culture where people believed themselves to be separate from God and who believed in a God of judgment and wrath.  Malachi’s understanding of the Book of Remembrance was limited by the veil of separation which seemed to stand between himself and God. We now live in a time where the veil of separation is falling away and in which we are invited to remember our Oneness with the God of love and compassion through whom, in whom, and for whom we have been made. As such, The Book of Remembrance is available to us in a way that was not possible before and through which we will be awakened to our unique mission of love that is meant to be made manifest at this unique and special time in the history of humankind.

Remembering our Purpose

In The Book of Remembrance is written the Divine account about who we are made to be – our Divine purpose and our Divine mission in this life, on this planet and in this universe.  Within the Book of Remembrance is the written record of the uniquely creative way in which we have been gifted to find meaning, purpose and fulfillment in this life and the way in which we are called to contribute to the betterment of all of creation.  Each and every one of us is written into this book and each and every one of us has access to The Book of Remembrance so that we can become the people God made us to be, thereby fulfilling our mission on this planet and God’s mission through us.  It is in the simple reading of the Book of Remembrance that we come to REMEMBER who God made us to be and it is in the simple reading of the Book of Remembrance that we become the person God made us to be.

Accessing the Book of Remembrance

If you desire to access The Book of Remembrance, the following meditation will provide you with the means to do so:

1) Set aside a time to be silent.  Find a comfortable place to sit.  Turn off all potential distractions (TV, radio, phones, etc.).  Close your eyes and draw your attention to your breathing.  Breathe slowly and mindfully, keeping your attention on your breath.  If your mind wanders, bring it back to the breath.

2) As you continue to breathe, become aware of your body and mind settling into a place of peaceful calm.  As you settle into this place of peacefulness, ask God for permission to read the Book of Remembrance, in a way that is for your highest good.

3) Imagine an ancient and sacred text being placed in your open hands.  Make note of the details of the book – its size, color, the appearance of the pages and the text written on the page.  Offer a prayer of gratitude for the ability and readiness to receiving the Remembrance that is in your highest good at this place in your journey.

4) Allow yourself to “read” what is written for you in the Book of Remembrance.  (Note, you may not be able to read the text as it might be composed in symbols or in a language you do not understand.  Trust that you are able to read it regardless.)  As you read, KNOW that in the reading you are REMEMBERING your Divine purpose, your Divine mission and the uniquely creative way in which you have been gifted to find meaning, purpose and fulfillment in your life and through which you are being called to serve the betterment of the universe.  In addition, KNOW that in the reading you are being empowered to BE the person God made you to be.

5) After you have read and feel as if the reading is complete.  Imagine that you are returning the book to where it came from.  Offer a prayer of thanks and trust that what you received in the reading will be made manifest in your life.

6) Return to The Book of Remembrance through this meditation again and again trusting that with each new reading, more is being Remembered and being made manifest in your life.

This blog is offered free of charge so that it will be available and accessible to all who need it.  If you have found this blog to be meaningful and supportive of your own journey of awakening and empowerment, please consider making a donation (donation button in the right sidebar menu) to this site in support of the work provided here.  Thank you.

I Am the Magdalene

Today, I give witness to the mission I am called to accomplish in this life.  As you read these words, I invite you to reflect on how you are being called to be a vessel through which God’s love is made manifest in our world and under whose influence are you called to do so?

Mary Magdalene, by Robert Lenz

I AM the Magdalene

I am the Magdalene – this is what I am called to embody.  Called to be a vessel through which Jesus’ message of love is shared in the world, continuing his mission as he has called me to do.  Confident, uncompromising, strictly adhering to the truth of Oneness that Jesus came to reveal.

  • Through word and witness, teaching and preaching and by living Jesus’ law of love through devotion and prayer,  works of healing and counsel.
  • Modeling the same commitment to contemplative prayer that Jesus embraced – the vehicle through which he came to know his own Oneness with God and the tool he shared to help others come to know this truth.
  • Helping others find healing of the seven demons of fear that reinforce our perceived separation from God so that we may once again live in the peace and joy that God intended.
  • Guided by the Inner Voice of the Divine that speak truth to the heart.
  • Confident in God’s loving counsel.
  • Uncompromising in adherence to that Inner Voice.
  • Moving in Compassion and Love for all.
  • Patient and Trusting in Divine Providence.
  • On-Fire with God’s Love.
  • With Christ as my Beloved to accompany me.

I am the Magdalene, I in her, and she in me.

Jumping off the Bridge

Today’s blog reminds us that sometimes we just have to take a leap….even when we do not yet know the exact plan or the outcome.  And in taking this leap, we need to be willing to fail (or perhaps worse…succeed!).  GULP!

On the Chopping Block

As I share this blog today, I feel a little like the Thanksgiving Day turkey, laying on the chopping block, getting ready to have his head lopped off so that his body can be served up on a platter for all the world to consume.  GULP!  On the professional front, this has been a month of lower income, high anxiety, boredom, lack of direction or motivation and restlessness.  After a weekend of just feeling sorry for myself, the universe slapped me upside the head and yelled at me, “Sh…t or get off the pot already!!!”  ARGH!!!!!   So, yesterday, without a clear plan or direction, I got off the pot.  I jumped off the bridge and dove into what my mother, not so affectionately, refers to as “The Church of Lauri.”  (I love you mom!)

Tearing Down to Rebuild

So, yesterday I began the process of tearing down my existing website in order to build something new.  (cruise around the site a bit and you’ll get a glimpse into some of the changes) Specifically, it seems it was time to put “it” out there.  The “it” I am referring to is myself, along with a team of magnificent people, stepping into the call to offer an alternative and complementary form of worship, along with expanded offerings of spiritual (not religious) formation for adults, couples and children.  I know, it sounds kinda like “church,” and that is the part that freaks me (and my mother 😉 ) out!

Jumping off the Bridge

So the Universe slapped me upside the head and urged me to put it out there…..even though I still don’t know exactly what it will look like and I have no idea the outcome.  The “outcome,” in fact, is the part that freaks me out the most.  What if it fails?  Or perhaps worse, what if it is a HUGE success?  Then my brain goes off on all kinds of worrisome tangents playing every possible scenario out in my mind.  No wonder I’ve been feeling anxious.  The bottom line is that it is time to put it out there, time to get off the pot and time to risk miserable failure or magnificent success because at the end of the day….I am surely not in charge of any of this!  All I can do is what I have tried to do over the past 20 or so years…..take time to listen to God, try to hear what God is telling me, believe what God is telling me….then act.  This is certainly one of those situations where I have done and continue to do this.  So….without further ado:

Contemplative Worship and Spiritual (not religious) Formation

Sometime in January of 2012 (probably on the Feast of Epiphany), Authentic Freedom Ministries will be launching our first venture into Sunday Worship.  We are calling it alternative and complementary because it is not like what you have seen before in the tradition of Western worship and because it can be used as a stand-alone experience or in conjunction with your existing worship practices.  We are calling it contemplative because the focus will be on your own personal, intimate, unique experience of the Divine as discovered and cultivated in the silence of your own heart.  If you come, you will be empowered to take time to discover and develop a relationship with the voice of truth that resides within and you will be given tools to begin to discern that voice from the voice of the ego/false-self.  And you will be supported in heeding that voice.  It is worship because there will be songs of praise and mission as well as time to read and reflect on scripture.  The only doctrine will be that which you discern in your own heart in your intimate connection with the Divine….measured and guided by compassion, justice and love.  We will leave the other questions of doctrine for the religious institutions to argue over.  Formation will be spiritual rather than religious…in other words, tools will be introduced, utilized and explored which empower you (and your partner and your children) to remember that love is your original and natural state and tools that will clear the way for you to live that love in the world.  In other words – answering the questions:

  • Who am I?
  • Whose am I?
  • What are my gifts and how am I being called to use them?

Are You Happy Now?

So Universe, are you happy now?  I put it out there.  I stepped off the path and leaped off the bridge.  Without knowledge of the exact plan and with no vision of the outcome….I put it out there.  Now it is your job to figure out the rest!!!!!

What are the situations in your life where you have had to step in with no discernable plan or vision of the outcome?

How are you at risking failure?

How are you at risking success?

What tools do you use to reason, discern and exercise Divine guidance/your own truth in this life?
