This week’s virtual church service for the fourth Sunday of Lent is LIVE. Click HERE to view the 20 minute service. In this week’s service, we explore the story from John’s gospel of the Man Born Blind and the invitation to use the brain God gave us to reason, discern and exercise truth. Sometimes the truth God reveals to us differs from the truths handed down by man. Sometimes the law of love overrides the law of the Church.
I will put my law within them, I will write it on their hearts…
Jeremiah 31: 33
Discernment is the spiritual process through which we determine if something is “of God” or “of the ego or false-self.” It is through discernment that we are able to make decisions in our life that lead us toward our highest good and our most authentic self and toward decisions that are life-giving and supportive of spiritual freedom. The reading above, from the prophet Jeremiah, describes the path of discernment. How do we know if something is “of God?” We bring it into our hearts and weight it based on the following criteria:
Is it rooted in and reflective of compassion?
Does it create within us a sense of contentment and peace?
Does it further the cause of peace and justice?
Is it life-giving?
Is it expansive, growing, leading toward greater freedom?
Is it reflective of our gifts and leading toward opportunities through which we are able to use and share our gifts?
Is it loving and joyful?
As Jeremiah reminds us, God’s law is not written in a book or on a tablet, but is written within us in our hearts. Do we take the time to search within for the “law” that God is revealing to us today?
