Remember not the former things,
nor consider the things of old.
Behold, I am doing a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?

IS 43: 18-19

There could not be more joyous words to hear than these words from Isaiah, which are then repeated throughout scripture and then brought into fruition in the Book of Revelation. As we approach the end of 2018, these could not be better words for the many I know for whom 2018 has not been the greatest of years.  Many I know have experienced 2018 as a year of suffering, struggle, great challenges and most of all – death.  Physically and metaphorically, 2018 has been a year of letting go = letting go of loved ones, letting go of things we have known, letting go of things we thought we knew about ourselves and our mission and purpose on this plane.  2018 has also been a year of financial difficulty for many I know – whether it be due to staggering medical bills, funeral costs, job loss, or just plain old struggle.  It seems that no matter where we turn, 2018 has been a year of having to face physical, material, tangible struggle and hardship and learning to find ways through it – or not.  Regarding the “not” I know that for many, 2018 has brought with it the desire to QUIT – for some out of despair, desperation, frustration or just plain exhaustion – and for those who have been paying attention – the desire to quit because what used to be is quite simply no longer life giving and needs to be set aside to make way for something new.

And the something new is coming. Or rather, it is already here! Do you not perceive it? We are at the place in our planet’s movement around the sun where the new is being born!  No matter your beliefs, the Winter (for the north) and Summer (for the south) Solstice is a time of great celebration.  Whether we are celebrating the sun at its highest point (Summer solstice) or the birth of the sun which ushers in the end of the dark days, the world over has something to celebrate!  Spiritually, we are at the threshold of a new year and our entrance into a new world – for those who have eyes to see and a heart to believe.  But, in order to truly receive the new that is promised, we have to let go of the old.  This we have done over and over and over in 2018, but now, we are invited to REALLY LET IT GO and to BELIEVE that IT IS DONE!

It is done! Whatever suffering or difficulties you experienced in 2018, LET THEM GO!  But more than this, we are invited into an even deeper letting go.  This is a letting go that requires an intellectual understanding, a willingness to change, and belief that change is possible.  It goes something like this:

Intellectual Understanding: There is a little thing that psychologists take for granted and quantum physicists consider as doctrine: We are conditioned by what we have known. Whatever experiences our life has held for us forms who we are while also forming our expectations about what life has in store for us.  If we have experienced poverty, we expect poverty.  If we have felt rejection, we expect rejection.  If we have felt abandoned, we expect abandonment.  If we have been betrayed, we expect betrayal.  Do you see where I’m going with this?  We are conditioned to expect what life has handed us, and most often, we expect nothing more.  Not only do we expect what has been, we become emotionally addicted to the chemicals that are produced in our brain that come forth out of these experiences – the anxiety, worry, frustration and victimhood of poverty, the self-loathing or rejection or abandonment, the shame of betrayal, etc.  We become addicted to these “negative” emotional states, and until we know better, we unconsciously seek out life situations where we are certain to have experiences that will give us our emotional drug.  Gross, right!?  But, it doesn’t have to be or remain this way….because today I am going to offer you something better:

Willingness to Change: Scripture is going to help us here – Remember not the things of the past! God meant this when S/he spoke these words through the prophet Isaiah and again through all who echoed his words.  In these words, our Divine Parent is reminding us of one of the only two things that are certain in the human experience: death and CHANGE.  What has been is not always what will be.  In fact, it is quite certain that what has been WILL NOT BE what will be.  In the immortal words of the Byrds while quoting the book of Ecclesiastes:

To everything turn, turn, turn,

There is a season turn turn turn

And a time to every purpose under heaven…..

We are here to fulfill God’s purpose. We are here to fulfill God’s will.  We are here to bring forth the kingdom of God which Jesus knew as Oneness and which John the Evangelist spoke of as LOVE.  We are here for the single purpose of knowing the love that we are and then being that love in the world.  #chooselove!  BUT…in order to be that love, we first have to be freed of the things of the past – our old wounds, our past conditioning, our unacknowledged fears, ego attachments and anxieties.  We are not free to be the vessel and vehicle of God’s unbounded love as long as we are holding ourselves prisoner to our past.

We need to stop re-membering (putting these experiences back into our body) all the suffering we have experienced. We need to make a conscious choice to CHANGE and let go of the patterns of what we have known (a process we might call forgiveness) – along with our emotional addictions to it – so that something new might come in taking its place.  This change moves beyond the intellectual, and invites us to literally take on a new body – replacing the body conditioned by fear, abandonment, rejection, betrayal, shame, etc. and allowing LOVE to take its place.  It is that simple…..and yet it is also that profound.  Just like love!

Belief: As many are aware, I am not a fan of either “The Secret” or “the Law of Attraction.” I cannot believe in a universe that punishes us for our thoughts – many of which we have no control over.  As one who has experienced anxiety, depression and panic attacks, I can attest that we are not in control of our thoughts.  Our mind is simply our mind, casting out thoughts in an attempt to help us feel safe.  Our thoughts do not have the power to dictate our life circumstances.  I can also attest that I can think great thoughts about that million dollar house on the lake I think I want, but if it is not in my highest good to possess that house no thoughts in the world will make that house mine.  Thoughts (alone) do not dictate our world.

Beliefs, however, do. As it relates to the invitation to change, when we believe that we can change the impact that past unpleasant experiences have had and continue to have on us…..then we can most certainly experience that change.  It doesn’t mean we will get that million dollar house on the lake, but it will mean that we are no longer prisoners of our past experiences.  We are now free to be the love we are meant to be in this life and in being that love, reminding others of the unbounded love that they are as well.  And if we struggle with belief (as many of us often do) or are plagued by doubt about the possibility of healing and change, scripture helps us here too:  When a man approached Jesus seeking healing for his son, Jesus said:

“If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”  To which the father responded:   “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9: 23-25)

Our loving Divine parent understands the fragile nature of the human condition and is always there to help – especially when the help we most need is with our struggle to believe.

Receiving the New

As we allow ourselves to identify the past patterns and beliefs through which we have been conditioned and consciously work on releasing/healing/transforming them, we are now free to receive the new. As a friend just recently reminded me, when we empty ourselves of that which is not made of love, LOVE (another name for God) rushes toward us, excitedly filling those spaces made empty by our healing efforts and intentions.  When we are filled with Love/God instead of our past suffering and pain, AMAZING things begin to happen.  Instead of feeling like prisoners of our past, we are carried toward the path/mission and purpose that God/Love intended for us and which is in our highest good.  Not the life that our limited minds can imagine – but a life far beyond what we could ever imagine for ourselves – a life born out of, made from and living only from a place of love.  Who wouldn’t want that!?

Suggested Spiritual Practice – Emptying to be Filled

The suggested spiritual practice for this week is an adaptation of the Tibetan Buddhist practice of Tonglen. In and through this practice, you will allow yourself to heal/transform and be freed of “the old” so that you can be ready to receive “the new.”

Set aside 20-30 minutes to complete this practice, knowing that you can return to this practice again and again and again as the need arises. You will also need a notebook or journal and a writing utensil for this practice.

Begin by creating a quiet space where you can be free from interruption. Turn off your cellphone; make sure that all other devises are silenced.

Begin by reflecting on your past. What are some of the negative or painful experiences that you have had in your life that have caused you to feel:  abandoned, afraid, rejected, ashamed, jealous, guilty, anxious, despairing, betrayed, etc.?  As these memories arise, list them in your notebook or journal.  Record the experience and the feeling associated with it.

After your mind runs out of memories, go back through each one reflecting on how these experiences are coloring your current expectations. How have you been conditioned by your past experiences to expect these negative experiences to continue?  Where are you expecting to be betrayed, rejected, abandoned, etc.?  Record your thoughts and reflections in your notebook or journal.

Now, with your journal in hand, you are invited to enter into a powerful healing process through which you will consciously release the experiences of the past while creating space for new and better things to take root in you.

Begin with any of the experiences you listed. Drawing the experience to mind, allow yourself to FEEL the feeling that lodged in your body as a result of that experience. FEEL the feeling, and then take a moment to identify where in your body you might be feeling this emotion.  You might find it is in your neck or shoulders, in your lower back, in the center of your abdomen  – or any other place in your body.  Once you have identified where you are feeling the feeling, breathe into the feeling  – directing your thoughts and intentions for healing into the place in your body where this feeling is held.  Breathe into the yuk, and then breathe out LOVE – believing and intending that as you breath into the yuk, the pain is being broken up and as you breathe out LOVE you are giving it release.  Continue with this practice until you feel freed of that past experience and the conditioning that happened because of it, knowing that as you are clearing your body of the yuk, you are making room for love or peace or hope to take its place.  Once you have completed work on that single experience, move on to the next one of your list.  Continue this practice until your allotted time is up.

After completing the practice, observe how you might feel differently in your body. Do you feel more free?  Do you feel lighter, more peaceful?  Do you feel more optimistic or energized by a new-found hopefulness?  Observe these new feelings and BELIEVE that they are here to stay.  And WHEN (not if) you feel your own conditioning trying to sneak back in, return to the practice you just completed above, remembering that this is a practice you can return to whenever the need for healing arises.

Remember not the things of old….

behold YOU (have the power) to make all things new!

Please share your thoughts, feelings, questions, experiences with this week’s lesson in the comment section below.

Wishing you a very happy holiday season and blessings for a joyful new year!

The Secret to Manifesting Abundance

I have spent my entire professional life chasing after the secret to manifesting abundance. I have followed both the Capitalistic model of achievement and the so-called spiritual laws of attraction. It wasn’t until I understood the real secret that my life became abundant.

magic, manifesting abundance, manifesting, the secret, prosperity gospel, Law of attraction, law of abundance

The “hard work” model

I have worked my ass off, one year making as many as 10,000 cold calls chasing after the promise of abundance. I have worked up to 100 hours a week chasing after abundance. I have networked, sent out press releases, written hundreds of letters of introduction, mailed hundreds of fliers and brochures, plastered the internet with thousands of blog posts and professionally written articles.  I have hosted workshops, classes, events, retreats. I have followed the advice of marketing experts.  I have employed the help of a strategic planning team.  I have pounded the pavement, looked under every bush and beneath every stone.  I have climbed mountains.  When all of this proved futile, I turned to the “spiritual” experts.

“The Secret”, “The Law of Attraction” and “Law of Manifestation”

I have thought the right thoughts. I have censored my negative thoughts.  I have recited mantras, offered prayers.  I lighted candles. I Feng-shuied my home and my office. I have written it down, visualized it, and believed it to be real.  I have set an altar, cast spells, carried crystals, put it in a cauldron and burned it – setting my prayers out on the wind. I followed the “energy alignment” protocols said to “guarantee” abundance. I slowed down in my doing so that I could simply be and allow.  I surrendered, submitted, let go.  I “trusted” my ass off and when I was out of energy for trusting, I asked for help in trusting.

The Prosperity Gospel

Then I wondered, if something was wrong with me or if I had done something wrong. Did “God not love me enough (as the Prosperity Gospel preachers claim) that I should be so poor?  Did I need to pray more?  Give more money to my “church?”  Confess my “sins?”  Had I sinned in leaving my Church and was I now being punished?  Of course I knew none of this to be true, but surely I must have done something wrong or there must be something wrong with me if all of these formulas worked for others but they haven’t worked for me.

In every way shape and form, I “asked” and it wasn’t given. Or wasn’t it?

The Secret to Manifesting Abundance

The secret to manifesting abundance is that THERE IS NO SECRET. The truth is that there is nothing we can manifest on our own.  When manifestation happens, it is simply GRACE.  Manifestation happens not because we thought the right thoughts, or worked hard enough, or planted enough seeds, or cast the right spell, or appeased God enough with our prayers.  Manifesting abundance happens because it is our Soul’s purpose at that moment in time.  That is an action of pure Grace.  And everything is Grace – even that which we want to judge as adversity, challenge, failure and loss. Everything is Grace as Grace is simply the natural unfolding of our Soul, leading us along the path we need for the fulfillment of this life’s purpose –  the joys and the sorrows, the births and the deaths, wellness and disease, financial prosperity and financial lack, the struggles and the victories – it is all Grace.  When we realize this truth and accept everything as the natural and necessary unfolding of our soul, then, and only then, are we truly abundant.

For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven.

The Rest of the Secret

Yesterday’s blog on manifestation – inviting us to move beyond “the Law of Attraction” and “The Secret” as methods of accomplishing our Soul’s purpose, was a huge success.  Apparently we are all tired of being told that it is our fault (because we did not think the right thoughts) for having the life of the Kardashians (not that we want that life…but you get my drift).  After posting the blog, I realized one critical piece was missing …  so without further ado…here is the rest of the Soul’s truth about manifestation and how we will bring our Soul’s purpose into its fulfillment as we move into the new world:

Addendum to “Beyond The Secret and The Law of Attraction”:

In the new world, faith and belief are one.  There will be no separation between our Soul’s knowing and our thoughts.  Faith and belief will be one!  All that we are and all that we do will unfold naturally from the place of our Soul, unhindered by the thoughts which might arise out of the false perception of separation and fear.

Amen!  Amen!  Halleluiah!

Living by a Different Set of Rules

Living by a Different Set of Rules

When we know, trust, and heed the Light and Love of God that dwells within us and seeks to be made known in the world through us, we soon learn that our life takes on a quality of ease and effortlessness that defies the so-called rules of Western culture.  As my soul-brother Jared observed, “The rules that seem to apply to everyone else do not apply to me.  I seem to be living by a different set of rules.”  Amen brother, amen!

Love…Light…Magic

To those continuing to choose the status quo and the “regular” world, the way that our lives seem to unfold might look like magic.  Alternatively, the choices we make and the way things seems to magically happen in our lives will confound, frighten, maybe even tick them off.  The truth is that while it might look like magic, it is not magic in the sense of how it has been presented in the “law of attraction,” neither is it the result of manipulating the elements or casting a spell.  Instead, the magic that unfolds in our lives is the simple consequence of choosing love over fear.

The Magic Formula

The formula is simple:

1) Sit down, shut up and LISTEN to how God is calling you to live your life.

2) Seek the peacefulness, expansiveness, joy, fulfillment and love WITHIN that are the hallmarks of God’s divine plan for you.

3) Do what God tells you.

4) When fear, temptation, resistance, doubt, arise (or when others tell you you are crazy), bring your attention to the light and love of God within you.  Return to God’s peace and allow this peace to encourage you through the fear.  Return to God’s plan for you.

KISS – Keep it simple silly!

That’s pretty much it.  When we take time to listen to God and do what God’s love tells us to do, EVERYTHING we need simply falls into our laps (sometimes by the skin of our teeth…..but it is there! This is where trust and surrender become critical).  We can get off the hamster wheel of ceaseless striving that is favored in our Western society and simply ALLOW our lives to unfold and flow effortlessly.  In making God the center of our life, and allowing God to be our guide, our teacher, our helper, we are choosing love over fear.  It is only in fear that our lives become anxious, fretful, worrisome, constricted, stressful.  As Paul once said, “In perfect love there is no fear.” This is the truth we are attempting to embrace and the love we are attempting to embody so that God’s magic can live in and through us….and then we really are able to enjoy a magical, miraculous life and participate in the magic that God wants to unfold in our world.

Love,

Lauri

Questioning the “Law of Attraction”

Questions about the pop-culture phenomenon known as “The Law of Attraction” aka “The Secret.”  Sometimes, I think “success” and “failure” have nothing to do with our beliefs, thoughts, attitudes and are simply a matter of dumb luck!  What matters is what we do with the life that we have been given.

Being Faced with a Challenge

This weekend, I had the great opportunity to attend a yoga workshop and Kirtan event with teacher, musician and Kirtan facilitator, Wade Imre Morissette.  Before we began the Kirtan, Wade invited us to choose an intention for our prayer.  The first word that popped into my mind was abundance.  But as I sat with that word, it was quickly replaced with worthiness.  Worthiness….the one word I have perhaps wanted most to really embrace and believe in my life.  I really want to believe I am worthy of all the things I want in my life:  Worthy of a fulfilling and prosperous career.  Worthy of a deep and abiding love.  Worthy of loving friendships, good health, happiness, etc. etc. etc.  And I wondered, is this why I have not achieved the financial success that I desire in my business (it is already overwhelmingly fulfilling!)?  Do I not believe I am worthy of financial success?  This is what the “Law of Attraction” would tell me.  “If you are not prosperous, in the job you want and love, in a relationship that is loving, fulfilling, uplifting, mutually supportive, etc. etc. etc.  it is because YOUR THOUGHTS ARE WRONG.  Well, if the “Law of Attraction says so….”   So, I offered up my prayer, “Please God, help me to feel worthy so that I may receive the financial abundance that I need to fulfill my dreams of helping others through my abundance.”  Then……I heard someone slam their foot upon the heavenly brakes and the squealing of tires that could only mean 30 pounds of tread just got left behind on Heaven’s highway.

What if The Law of Attraction is NOT?

Wait a minute…….I heard the thoughts gathering in my head.  I know all kinds of people who have a boatload of money.  Some who worked very hard for it.  Some whose spouse worked very hard for it.  Some who seemed to accumulate it by accident.  Do all these people believe that they are worthy?  HECK NO!!!!  In fact many of these people are plagued by self-doubt, self-loathing, self-deprecation.  So, if these people who are so much better off financially than I am and struggle even more with worthiness than I do….WHAT GIVES?????  According to “The Law of Attraction,” belief and thought equals attainment.  If you believe you deserve it, if you believe you are worthy, then you will get it.  AND…..if you don’t have it, it is because you believed or thought wrongly. YOU are the creator and the source of your manifestation (or lack thereof).  At the end of the day, good or bad…..IT’S ALL YOUR FAULT!  To put it bluntly….I think that’s CRAP!

Sh…t   Happens

Sometimes, I just think that sh….t happens.  Some people are rich.  Some are poor.  Some have fulfilling careers.  Some do not.  Some find loving partnership easily.  Some search and search and never find it.  And, I find it really hard to believe that all those that DO NOT have what they want professionally, financially and personally do not have it because their thoughts or beliefs are wrong.  If that were the case, then none of us would really have what we want because  no one thinks all good things all day every day and most of us grew up in some sort of dysfunction that colors our beliefs and perceptions – sometimes negatively.  Not to mention, we are all born into the world with a unique lens through which we see, perceive and experience our human experience.  Not to get all Trent Reznor (one of my favorite nihilists) on you….but at the end of the day, perhaps a lot of it is just DUMB LUCK.

The Real Secret

So, if life is just a matter of chaotic, unordered, unpredictable events and bad things happen to good people, regardless of how they think or believe, now what?  WELCOME TO THE HUMAN CONDITION!  And……it doesn’t have to be “Life sucks and then you die.”  Are bad things going to happen to us?  Are the things we think we want sometimes elusive?  Will there be suffering and loss.  YOU BET.  AND…..we don’t have to allow it to destroy us!  This is the real secret that all the greatest spiritual teachers came to remind us.  Moses, Jesus, Mohammed, The Buddha, Yogananda, Babaji, Amma, the Dalia Lama, all come with the same message.  “The Human condition is the human condition.  And….suffering is optional.”  And……they have all left us tools with which we can SURVIVE, endure, transcend, make it through the stuff that life sometimes hands us:  sacred writings, words of wisdom, spiritual practices and rituals, etc. etc. etc.  Thanks to those who have gone before us, we have EVERYTHING we need to survive and maybe even ENJOY the human experience.  (Imagine that!)  Thanks to these teachers, we can stop worrying so much about how our thoughts or beliefs are dictating the condition of our lives, let go of the guilt over how it must somehow be our fault and focus on the tools that lead us to the peace and love of God.  And this peace and love of God is there for EVERYONE regardless of what we have, believe or think.

Faith

Today’s blog asks more questions than offers answers……so, let’s talk about faith baby!

Scary Gospels

Jesus says something really scary in today’s gospel reading.  (Matthew 9: 27-31).  When approached by two blind men who asked for Jesus’ healing, he asks them, “Do you believe that I can do this?” They respond, “Yes.”  Then here were Jesus’ scary words, “Let it be done for you according to your faith.”  Oh oh.  My first thought was, “What if their faith is imperfect?  What if they waver for just a moment?  Does that mean they will only receive a partial healing?”  YUK!  I sure wouldn’t want to be the poor guy who doubted for just a second and only partly got my sight back.  Again, YUK!

Scarier Pop-Culture “laws”

If you have seen any of the materials out there on the so-called “law of attraction” or “the secret” or have read books or attended seminars by certain authors, this is their very position.  We only receive that which we have 100% belief in.  In other words, what we have in life is 100% reflective of how we think and believe and if we don’t have “what we want” it is because we didn’t have enough belief or because we thought the wrong thoughts.  I totally agree that our thoughts, our beliefs, our perceptions and perspectives are somehow reflective of our lives.  However, even as a recoverying perfectionist who likes to carry the blame for everything good or bad in my life, it feels like an enormous burden to have to carry ALL the responsibility for our life circumstances.  I consider myself to be a woman of significant faith and yet, I do not have the $1million house on the lake neither do I have the red Volvo station wagon (or 1963 split window hardtop Corvette) of my dreams, and I’m certainly not pulling in six figures.  And if I look back on all the things I’ve had “faith” about and seen them fall short of my desires and had no one to blame but myself for these “failures,” I just might end up suicidal!

The Loophole

I certainly don’t know everything…but I can’t believe that God is really that cruel.  If in that last moment before Jesus laid his hand on him, the blind man had just a flicker of doubt (because he is human for God’s sake!), I can’t imagine that God would deprive him of the complete healing that he desired and believed that Jesus could accomplish.  There has to be some sort of allowance for our humanness….because let’s face it, we are a doubtful people.  So here is what I think….that God’s intention and God’s knowledge of what is in our highest good overrides “the law of attraction,” “The secret,” and our wavering faith.

Our Job

So, our job then is to strive to have faith, and to recognize that in our humanness, we are imperfect and our faith will waver from time to time.  And it is here that we can pray for God to increase our faith as we offer these words, “Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed.”  AND…..”Let it be done to me according to your word.”  Because at the end of the day, God knows best and God does best and sometimes it is not in our highest good to have the $million house on the lake and it might be in our highest good to be completely cured of our blindness…regardless of our imperfect faith.

What role does faith play in your own life?

Where do you struggle with faith?

How can you invite God to help you with your faith?
