The Greatest Christmas Gift Ever!

Behold, this is a time of great promise being fulfilled. The journey is over and done. The great task for which we have been set on this plane is accomplished. Our mission complete. We have doggedly pursued the vision/mission/call of our Souls and in many ways, we have died for the sake of this mission – died to our false selves, died to our ego, died to illusion, fear, hatred, ignorance and most importantly: separation. We have faced criticism, condemnation, ridicule and rejection. We have walked through valleys of burning coal and stood toe to toe with SATAN (the inner adversary) himself. In spite of our fears, in spite of the loves we had to leave behind, in spite of the excruciating emotional, mental and physical pain we have endured…..we are still here, breathing and alive as we now stand victorious for all that we have endured, with nothing but faith and some sort of blind hope that all would not be in vain.

Mary Magdalene by Catherine E. Case
Mary Magdalene by Catherine E. Case

With every fiber of my being, I feel the truth of this message. I see the seeds I/we have planted, having already taken root, now beginning to bear fruit. I feel the expanse of love that has taken over our world in spite of the fear and hatred that tries to dampen its cause. I see the faces of people CHANGING. No longer set fast by fear or arms crossed in separation, but looking on in wonder, asking the question, “Could there really be something more than this? Could life be softer, gentler, kinder, more loving? Could people turn to one another in wonder and awe, seeking to understand and honor our differences while honoring our common desire to be safe, and to feel loved?” I see it. I feel it. I know it. And it is because of our effort, because of our willingness to hold fast to the call of love, that this transformation has taking place and will continue to unfold. As I read this morning’s gospel, these words from Zechariah, I knew that what I was sending was true….and I knew it by the ocean of tears I shed in receiving these words – tears not of grief, but of celebration and relief. My Christmas gift to you is that you receive these words for yourself (translating them to fit your own personal beliefs please!) Merry Christmas and thank you for being part of the greatest Christmas present EVER!

“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; for he has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty Savior, born of the house of his servant David. Through his prophets he promised of old that he would save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us. He promised to show mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hand of our enemies, free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, to give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Current World Changes – Preparing for the BIG BANG

Today’s blog arrives with a sense of urgency.  The world is changing….and we are feeling it in every part of our being.  We are being SQUEEZED in preparation for the BIG BANG…..catapulting…..rocketing us into a whole new world….a world that we get to choose – the current world rooted in fear or a more loving world rooted in unity consciousness.  What will you choose!?

It’s Getting Crowded in Here – the sensation of current world changes

I don’t know about you, but things are feeling tighter and tighter and tighter every day. On one hand are the forces of the outside, 3D world growing in fear, chaos and disorder.  On the other hand are the very real inner 5D forces SQUEEZING, COMPRESSING, PULLING everything we are and everything we have INWARD.  Since we are being invited to detach from the 3D world as it struggles with its death throes (by all means, continue to hold the 3D world in love and prayer), the focus of today’s blog will be on what is going on within us as we transition from the 3D(duality) to 5D (unity consciousness) world.

In short….we are being made ready for the BIG BANG! In a very real physical (as in physics) sense, we are being COMPRESSED.  All of the parts of ourself – our body, our mind, our spirit, are being pulled together, squeezed tight, sucked closer and closer and in this process of compression, much is falling away.  All that has not served us in the world of dualism (deprivation, anxiety, feeling unsupported, unacknowledged, misunderstood, lack, and the resulting compulsions that arise out of fear – gluttony, power and control, wrath, the need for revenge, hatred, envy, greed, sloth and pride) is being sloughed away.  Jobs that have not supported us (or cultural paradigm that haven’t supported our work), relationships that have been unfulfilling, tasks that have been life-sucking….are all being expunged.

Currently, this experience is leaving many of us feeling a little on edge. Really…how many old wounds, past hurts, unhealthy attachments, old scripts, unhealed fears do we have to encounter to finally be free of them?  It feels like they are reappearing and reappearing with a vengeance….ultimately so that we can finally BE DONE with them!  Be gone!  Out damn spot, out I say!  We are being made clean and in the cleansing being compressed…..squeezed inward toward the very center of our being so that only a tiny spark of ourselves and the life we have known remains.  The good news….is that what remains is THE GOOD STUFF – our highest truth….filled with our soul’s purpose and the life we were meant to live.  And in the center of the good stuff is the promise of love, contentment and peace and a life filled with meaning, and fulfilling in its purpose.

As Newtonian physics explains, with every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. This compression that we are currently experiencing WILL NOT go on forever.  Eventually, critical mass will be reached and what is being compressed will EXPLODE.  This explosion, however, is not for the purpose of our annihilation, but for the purpose of propelling us……powerfully and quickly into the new world.  We are being compressed so as to fit through the proverbial wormhole that will catapult us into the new world and it is the equal and opposite reaction of this compression that will provide the fuel for the journey.  Quite literally, we will rocket forth from the world of duality into the world of non-duality….or more inclusively, into the world of unity consciousness.

Until critical mass occurs and we are rocketed forth into the new world, the invitation is to SIT TIGHT. Cease from judging what is showing up in your life and in your consciousness.  Allow yourself to simply observe, without judgment, and participate where necessary.  Take responsibility for what is yours and LET GO of the rest.  Cultivate equanimity in the ups and downs of the compression and let yourself get small.  Be ready and willing to LET GO of what is no longer life giving and of what no longer supports your true self.  Release that which is not supportive of your true power and be freed of the old patterns that have not served.  Most importantly, let go of any feelings or false-perceptions based in lack, undeservedness, scarcity or poverty of body, mind or spirit, because in the world of unity consciousness, the fullness of your power will be made known and you will experience freedom beyond measure!  Hang on tight and get ready for a … ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two one……BLAST OFF!

Conquering Fear

Soul is the uniquely creative part of ourselves that when engaged, gives us a sense of fulfillment, peace and joy.  Soul gives us meaning and is our unique purpose in this life and the way we assist in creating a better, more loving, more joyful, more peaceful world.  Soul is who we were born to be and who we are compelled to become.  Birthing the Soul is as much of a spiritual as it is psychological journey and there is just one thing that stands in the way of living our Soul’s purpose….and that is fear.  Today’s blog explores that fear.

Getting a Glimpse of Soul

Soul is the uniquely creative part of us that we were born to become.  Soul is our original nature and the person God/dess made us to be.  Living from Soul, we find meaning and purpose in our life, it leads us to fulfilling work and healthy intimate connections.  Living from Soul, we offer our own unique gift for the betterment of humanity and our world.  Soul is not something that only shows up after we have done enough work, said enough prayers or beat enough bushes.  Soul is with us all along, calling to us, beckoning us, guiding us and sometimes kicking out butts.  We can recognize Soul in the moments in our life where we are on-fire with enthusiasm, excitement and joy.  Soul is found in the activities, books, movies, relationships, life encounters that make our hearts sing.  Soul is speaking through us when we hear words of wisdom, insight, comfort, support and guidance fly out of our lips and we wonder, “Where did THAT come from?”  Soul is in the moments of tender intimacy, heart breaking grief and bold righteousness.  Soul is in our passion, our grief, our joy and our activism.

Soul in Retrospect

Soul is also available in the 20/20 vision of hindsight.  When I look back on my own life, I can see Soul glimpsing at me behind Fr. Otto’s robes, in the rolling mists of Avalon, in Obi Wan Kenobi’s brown hooded robe, in Wonder Woman’s golden lasso of truth, in the gleaming blade of Excalibur, in the wiggle of Samantha Steven’s nose and in the haunting strains of Moire Brennan’s voice and the platformed heels of Stevie Nicks’ boots.  Soul guides us in glimpses and flashes of inspiration and in dreams of things yet to come.  Soul is always there in everything, calling us home to ourselves, to the person God/dess made us to be.

Being Human = Having Fear

If Soul is there all along, calling, cajoling, beckoning us on, the birthing of the Soul should be easy, right?  Yeah….I wish.  Birthing Soul would be easy if it weren’t for one thing…..FEAR.  In the moment that we agreed to participate in this human experiment, Fear decided to come along for a ride.  In fact, if it weren’t for fear, we wouldn’t be human…instead, we’d be sitting up on the clouds with the Cherubim and Seraphim, not being human, but singing songs of glory to our God.  But we aren’t here to be angels, neither are we here to be gods.  We are here to be human. In being human, fear has an important role to play.  I keeps us alive and allows us to survive.  Without a healthy dose of fear, we’d all be jumping off of bridges and leaping from cliffs to our death, eating poisonous plants and burning ourselves with fire.  Beyond the necessary fears for survival, however, fear is simply an obstacle that keeps us from living from Soul and from being the joyful, loving, creative, fulfilled, peaceful person God/dess made us to be.

Confronting Fear

One of the things I have learned about confronting fear is that if we can name the demon, it no longer has power over us.  99% of the work of moving beyond fear to Soul is actually naming the fear.  Today, I’m going to help you with that task.  In my book, Authentic Freedom – claiming a life of contentment and joy, I have identified the seven core spiritual fears that are THE obstacles to us living from Soul and being the person we were made to be.  Your assignment in the coming week is to look for the presence of these fears in your life, identify them and call them out.  While there is more to releasing fears than simply naming them…..naming is a good place to start.  So here are the fears that have been keeping you from the life of contentment, fulfillment and joy that you long for:

  • There is not enough (time, money, power, things, love, support, time, money)
  • I am not uniquely gifted (ie: I have nothing to offer, no gifts to speak of, nothing to contribute)
  • I can’t
  • I am not loved (or will be rejected)
  • I am not free to express my truth
  • I do not know my truth (or my path, or my gift, or my Soul)
  • I am alone

In the coming week, reflect on how these fears are present in your life and how they are an obstacle to you living your Soul!

Guest Blogger, Kari Uselman on Authentic Freedom

Today’s blog comes to us from Kari Uselman, PhD.  Among other things (see below), Kari is a dear friend and in the process of becoming an  Authentic Freedom Facilitator.  These were Kari’s thoughts as she completed her first assignment and she has agreed to share them with you.  Thank you Kari!

Authenic Freedom to me means flowing and being prosperous in this life’s soul journey, honoring that which calls me to service and filling that space with love and joy.

When I know the truth, I am aware in some way that truth is present…goose bumps, warmth in my heart expanding, sound awareness inside my being, words that insist, a profound sense of satisfaction, joy or peace.  In these moments, freedom is pure, authentic, boundless and everywhere.  There is no fear or sense of lack or any of the yuck that blinds the ego from the soul…the soul shines brightly forth in fullness, in the truth and authenticity of our breath and beingness.  There is great comfort in this space.  The spirit dances and the soul smiles in delight in the formlessness of this space, recognizing that the body that houses us for now SEES, KNOWS, FEELS, EXPERIENCES this truth that has always been present, yet has been hidden behind the veil of our human illusion in the conditioning of the mind from the place of ego.  This space in-between is Authentic Freedom.  Once recognized, once tasted, it can merge into the human soul experience and become a living aspect of who we are, propelling us forward in a lightness unknown before this experience, escorting us with a new strength in the fulfillment of our predetermined life purpose in this moment of NOW.

Kari Uselman, PhD is a   nationally certified Biofeedback Specialist, Homeo-therapeutic Coach, Quantum Reflex Analysis Practitioner and Doctor of Philosophy and Education.  Kari offers a wide variety of holistic wellness options including: Quantum Biofeedback, Quantum Reflex Analysis, Cranial Sacral Therapy, Contemporary Homeopathy and Wellness Education and Holistic Health.  She has studied and participated in wellness education programs for over twenty years. Empowering Spiritual Teachers

There is a growing hunger in Western culture to find meaning, purpose and connectedness in our lives free from the traditional route that has been rooted in dogma and doctrine.   Authentic Freedom Ministries is leading the charge by empowering teachers to assist us along this path.

Calling All Magdalenes!

Authentic Freedom Teacher Training is officially in full swing.  Women and men are coming out of the woodwork who have either read Authentic Freedom and been inspired by the tools presented or taken the classes and experienced the life-changing effect of employing its principles.  All this is in keeping with the vision of Authentic Freedom Ministries:

To be a global presence in spiritual formation, grounded in contemplative prayer and empowered service.

I affectionately refer to these men and women as “The Magdalenes” because I consider Mary Magdalene to be the Apostle who most closely reflected the contemplative lifestyle and compassion of Jesus and who most clearly understood the tools through which we can transcend the fears of the human condition and release that which separates us from God, from ourselves and from one another.  When we embrace these principles, we understand that we are all One and are freed of the fears that come out of this false perception of separation and block our way to peace, love and joy.

The Teachers’ Role

The role of the Authentic Freedom teacher is to be a source of support for those looking for meaning, purpose and connectedness in their lives by facilitating the Authentic Freedom curriculum.  Authentic Freedom transcends centuries of dogma to reveal the powerful and life-changing message at the heart of Jesus’ teachings and the universal truths at the core of every religion. The best part about this curriculum and why people love it so much is that they don’t have to throw Jesus out with the bathwater.  This is an important piece for those raised Catholic or any other Christian denomination who appreciate the compassion and justice of Jesus’ message but who struggle with how it is sometimes presented by institutions as punitive, judgmental or divisive.  Instead, Authentic Freedom reveals a dynamic and unifying path of spiritual transformation and empowerment that speaks to people of all beliefs thereby allowing us to embrace the truth of love that Jesus taught while honoring the truth of love as taught through other spiritual traditions – again, setting aside separation and embracing oneness.

The Bonus

It is easy to see the application of Authentic Freedom in spirituality and religion, and it is important to recognize that it doesn’t stop there.  Those who are seeking empowerment as Authentic Freedom Facilitators recognize the far-reaching benefits of these tools in the following fields:

  • Spirituality
  • Religion
  • Psychology
  • Counseling
  • Recovery
  • Yoga
  • Meditation and Mindfulness
  • Holistic wellness
  • Ecumenism

It has been additionally noted that the audience for Authentic Freedom might be in traditional church environments but will more likely be found elsewhere such as:

  • Retreat Centers
  • Spirituality Centers
  • Yoga Studios
  • Progressive Churches
  • Recovery Groups
  • Wellness Centers
  • Support Groups
  • Counseling Centers
  • House Churches
  • Meditation Groups

God/dess Talking

Today’s blog explores God.  What would God say to us today if we had the ears to hear?  Yes, I am writing this, but read it as if it is God/dess speaking to you.  🙂

Who I AM

My dearest children:

My blessings of love, joy and peace on you this day….and on every other day.  Lauri asked me to speak to you on behalf of MYSELF and for your benefit.  You are living in a time where there is much conflict and so much of that conflict seems to be centered around ME.  Am I man or woman, spirit or light, presence or essence, up or down, inside or outside, on a mountain or in a temple, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Pagan, Hindu, Buddhist, Black, White, Asian, Gay, Straight, Republican or Democrat, etc. etc. etc.  In this moment,  I invite you to imagine ME as a beautiful, gentle, compassionate and wise woman, and in this imagined vision of ME, you may call ME, Sophia, but know that this is only one possibility among an infinite number of possibilities about how you can imagine and experience ME.  So, over this arguement about what I AM and what I AM not….you can stop all your fighting.  Because……I AM all of it…..and even more than that.  You cannot begin to imagine or even experience all that I AM, because I AM infinite.  But, if it helps you to know ME in a particular form: Black or White, male or female, Spirit or Light….then go for it.  It makes no difference to me, except when you fight about it.

PS:  If you need help finding your way home……call Lauri (920) 230-1313 or email or Buy her book: Authentic Freedom – Claiming a Life of Contentment and Joy!

Enough with the fighting

While I AM a tolerant, compassionate and unconditional loving God/dess and in you there is never really anything to forgive, I AM getting a little tired of all this fighting.  But then again, I only have MYSELF to blame since I did create you and in your decision to become human, separation is the lens through which WE will have this experience.  This might be a good time in your history, however, to recognize that separation is a choice and it is a choice that you can undo at any moment.  When you turn away from the separation you have chosen and remember your ONENESS in ME……then all this fighting will end.  Why….because all these things you perceive as different – race, religion, political party, nation, gender, sexual orientation, are really all the same.  In ME, there is no separation….we are all ONE….in a constant state of love, harmony, unity, bliss, peace, joy, awe and wonder.  You make things so difficult with all this separation and like Dorothy and her red shoes, you have always had the power to change this.  And you know, her little mantra, “There’s no place like home….there’s no place like home….” could have the same magical effect on you….to bring you home to ME!  So if you are tired of all this fighting, struggle, challenge, separation, then click your little red heels and COME HOME!

PS:  If you need help finding your way home……call Lauri (920) 230-1313 or email or Buy her book: Authentic Freedom – Claiming a Life of Contentment and Joy!

All I Want to Do and BE

Come home!  I am sitting here waiting for you to come home to remembering your true nature which is LOVE.  And, I want nothing more than to hold you in that love, comfort you from your fears, enfold you in peace and stroke your hair as your highest truth gently rises to the surface.  I made you for joy.  I made you to create.  I envisioned you having fun, playing in fields of daisies and making bubbles through bubble wands.  I created this amazing, beautiful, magical, full of wonder, world for your pleasure.  I want you to skip through the woods in search of magical mushrooms, to dance with the fairies and play hide and seek with the gnomes.  Your world is supposed to be magic.  Instead, you have made it your own personal hell.  STOP Right now!  Click your ruby red heels and COME HOME.  You have the power.  You know how to get here.  And if you forgot, read some more of Lauri’s blogs, she has given you a MILLION tools to help you remember and maps to help you find your way.  I am here….waiting…….and all you have to do is CHOOSE: love instead of fear, harmony instead of separation, peace instead of anxiety, joy instead of sorrow, hope instead of dread, compassion instead of hatred, forgiveness instead of anger.  CHOOSE ME.  CHOOSE ME.  CHOOSE ME……and you will have peace.

Sophia (or whatever name by which you want to call me!)

Back in the Saddle – Remembering Love

Today’s blog invites us back into the primary focus of this blog, to provide tools and support to help us:  “Remember the Love That We Are!”

As quoted on the front page of this website, the mission of Authentic Freedom Ministries and Authentic Freedom Press is as follows:  Through our inspirational blog, weekly meditation practices newsletter, books, classes and professional services, we provide the resources that will assist you in your journey to Remember the Love that You Are. As such, today’s blog returns to the business at hand, providing you with the resources, inspiration and tools you need to REMEMBER LOVE.  And just because I’m a total dork and a child of my generation, here’s a little classic Aerosmith to get us rolling:

Scriptural Support

Scripture is one of the foundational tools that I have used in my teaching, writing and personal spiritual practice.  I use scripture as an example of wisdom literature and as a way to demonstrate one of the many ways that God can speak to us directly, intimately and in person.  In other words, no dogma here…..only an invitation to see how God is speaking to you TODAY!  As I was meditating with this morning’s scripture, I discovered two passages that reminded me of the value of scripture as a tool to help us to REMEMBER this LOVE:

Do not act in compliance with the desires of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves.

Mark 10

Amen I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the Gospel who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age.

Mark 10

Both of these passages point us to the ONE thing that supports our REMEMBRANCE of Love….and that is SPIRITUAL PRACTICE.

Spiritual Practice

In my humble opinion, there is only ONE thing that is guaranteed to help us remember love in our lives and that will support us in the fulfillment of peace, contentment and joy.  And that ONE THING is Spiritual Practice.  As much as we want to believe we are able to find peace, joy, love and fulfillment from another human being, money, objects, power, status, fame, etc. etc. etc., the truth is that we cannot.  All of these things are fleeting, temporary and as human beings, we are fickle.  The only way that we can find true fulfillment in this human experience is by connecting with our Source – that which I call God.  It is through Spiritual Practice that we make this connection, rather, it is through spiritual practice that we REMEMBER this SOURCE because in truth, we are NEVER separate from God, we just think we are.  But, what is Spiritual Practice, you might ask.  My answer is that spiritual practice is ANY activity that helps us to remember peace, love and joy and any activity that leads us toward the knowledge of our gifts and toward ways in which we are empowered to use those gifts in service to humanity for the betterment of our world.  In other words, spiritual practice is defined (or maybe revealed) to you.  Depending on your unique temperment and personality, spiritual practice might include:

  • silent meditation
  • reflecting on sacred readings (scripture)
  • writing
  • singing
  • mantra (repeating a sacred phrase)
  • being in nature
  • painting, drawing, throwing a pot, building, creating, etc. etc. etc.
  • gardening
  • cooking
  • nurturing your loved ones
  • volunteer service
  • activism
  • physical activities
  • meditative movement (yoga, tai chi, etc.)

The list is ENDLESS.  The trick is to find what works for you, set aside time in your day and JUST DO IT!  Swoosh!

Benefits of Spiritual Practice

As the scripture passages above alude to, regular and dedicated spiritual practice provide us with proven benefits IN THIS LIFE.  The return on an investment of spiritua practice is “a hundredfold” and include:

  • increased peace
  • a deeper sense of security and safety
  • reduction in fear, anxieties, worries, etc.
  • increase in joy
  • discovery of our gifts and the desire to cultivate, nurture and share them
  • inner fulfillment
  • the remembrance of love
  • the healing and release of our formerly compulsive behaviors
  • discovery and acceptance of behaviors that support our newfound love, joy, peace and the discovery of our gifts

Support for your practice

The purpose of Authentic Freedom Ministries and all that I do is to provide you with the support you need to start and/or continue your spiritual practice so that you can REMEMBER LOVE, experience peace and live in joy.  Through this blog, my classes and services, the books I’ve written and most especially through the Agape’ newsletter, I do just that – provide you with easy to access tools and resources along with words of encouragement and support to help you to be successful in finding and maintaining inner fulfillment in your life.  So, thank you for allowing me to share these gifts with you and if I can be of further service, do not hesitate to ask!

Shortcuts to Contentment and Joy

Today’s blog explores the seven core spiritual fears that prevent us from living a life of contentment and joy and the tools that help us to find healing and release of those fears.

Identifying Fears

In my book, Authentic Freedom – Claiming a Life of Contentment and Joy, I identify the seven core spiritual fears that prevent us from living in the peace, joy and love that are our original nature.  The seven core fears are:

  • There is not enough (time, money, material possessions, power, fame, status, etc.0
  • I will be unable to bring forth life that will persist (physical and/or creative life)
  • I can’t (be and live as my most authentic self)
  • I am not loved
  • I am not free to express my truth
  • I do not know
  • I am alone/I have to do it alone

In Authentic Freedom, the reader is introduced to the ways in which they can identify these fears as being active in their lives through physical, mental, emotional and spiritual signs and symptoms.  As anyone in the recovery world knows, the first step in healing our addictions, our fears, etc. is to identify these fears.  After identifying these fears, we then need a comprehensive process through which we can move through these fears and release them for healing.  Authentic Freedom provides that process.  Through the help of scripture, along with effective tools of meditation, contemplation and personal reflection, you are empowered to give over for healing and release, the fears that prevent you from being the person God made you to be – compassionate, joyful, contented and fulfilled.

Who is really doing the healing here?

So while Authentic Freedom provides a kind of self-help program for healing our deepest spiritual wounds, at the end of the day, every exercise revealed in this work, leads us to a common destination – turning our fears over to God for healing and release.  While working through the Authentic Freedom process, we discover that we are really taking the first three steps as illuminated in all recovery programs, We admit that we are powerless over these fears and we turn them over to the God of our understanding.  While we need to come forward and show up for the work, it is ultimately God who is doing the healing and it is especially helpful to realize this when we come face to face with the big fears that most often feel insurmountable.

Offering a Shortcut

So, while I want you to buy my book, I will offer you this short cut to claiming a life of contentment and joy….and that shortcut is God.  Name your fear.  Give it to God for healing and release.  Name your fear.  Give it to God for healing and release.  Name your fear.  Give it to God for healing and release.  And one final and critical step…..BELIEVE that God is doing it.  And if all else fails…..ASK GOD FOR HELP!

What is your relationship to the fears listed above?

How are you being invited to admit your powerlessness over these fears?

How can you turn these fears over to God for healing and release?

Ash Wednesday – Returning

Even now, says the Lord,

Return to me with your whole heart.

Joel 2:12-18

A Lenten Invitation

I love the scripture passage above from the prophet Joel.  This is the first line of the first reading proclaimed during the Ash Wednesday mass….ushering in the annual observance of Lent.  I’m not sure there are any better words to describe what Lent can be for us – returning to God with our whole hearts!

Our Forgetfulness

We are a forgetful people.  In our choice to experience the human condition, we temporarily forgot our original state in Oneness with God.  We forgot the peace, the love and the joy that define our Origin in God and as such, we live in a state of fear.  This fear which arises out of our false perception of separation from God is what creates the suffering that we experience in the human condition.  Out of this fear, we behave in ways that are unloving, unkind, covetous, jealous, wrathful and unjust…and we suffer the consequences of these actions (not because God is punishing us, but because that is just the way things are).  In this state of fear, we often believe, “Life sucks and then you die,” or we project these fears onto God falsely believing that we have to earn our way back to “heaven” and that there is some magical formula (certain prayers, rituals, sacraments, acts of service, pentitential acts) that will get us back home.  The good news is that there is really only one things we need to do…..and that is to REMEMBER!

Returning and Remembering

I know this is easier said than done, but in order to reclaim our original nature as loving, peaceful, joyful creatures, all we need to do is to REMEMBER.  And the quickest way I have found to remember the love, the joy and the peace that we are is to turn to God.  Now, I don’t mean the head bowed in penitence turning to God….I mean the heart wide-opened, arms spread wide, joyful acceptance of the loving magnificence of God.  And, there are many tools to help facilitate this turning…..prayer, devotion, worship, meditation, contemplation, love making, being in nature, mindfulness, acts of service, singing and chant, listening to music, participating in creative endeavors.  All of these activities, when directed toward our returning to God, help us to Remember.  When we REMEMBER God as love…..then we also REMEMBER ourselves as love and we have accomplished what Joel invites us to do – return to God with our whole heart.

What Are You Waiting For?

While we can get to this business of remembering and returning anytime we wish, Lent is a great excuse for giving extra attention to this endeavor.  So, if you are interested in experiencing deeper peace, greater love and more joy in your life…..what are you waiting for?  If you don’t already have a spiritual practice….start one (See the new Tab on this Website – “Meditation tips” for help on getting started.) and if you have one already….do it more.

What activities are you already doing that give you peace, help you experience love or joy?

How are you being invited to utilize these activities as a spiritual practice with the intention of remembering your original nature as love, peace and joy?

How are you being invited to begin or deepen your existing spiritual practice?
