My Sacred Heart

In a moment that can only be thought of as pure, Divine intervention, the image I use to represent Authentic Freedom transformed from alternatively, hands releasing a dove in flight, or the hallowed halls of an academic institution, to a modern/abstract interpretation of the Sacred Heart. This could not be more appropriate – reflecting both the journey that got me here and the gift that I bring to the world.  Ironically, both are one and the same:  turning my/your world from fear into love.

This journey began in the Catholic Church, the origin of the image and devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary – a devotion I never quite understood. Apparently I am not alone in this as my son once inquired, “Mommy, why does Jesus have a strawberry on his dress?” I had no reasonable response other than to laugh my butt off (mind you, while in the front row at mass with the priest glaring at me) over the innocent truth of a child!  Out of the mouths of babes!  Why was Jesus wearing a strawberry on his dress?

Researching the devotion to the Sacred Heart provided no further guidance, in fact, I found myself even more confused. I find I am left to my own devices in articulating what the Sacred Heart means to me.

My Sacred Heart

A heart that has been tested in the fires of the human experience.

That has suffered loss, disappointment, condemnation, rejection, ridicule, false accusation, abandonment and betrayal.

A heart that has been brought to its knees by doubt and despair.

A heart that has been traumatized and struck with terror.

A heart that has been alone and afraid.

A heart that has been broken.

A once stony heart, broken open, pouring out all my attachments and ego-fixations:

My desire for riches and fame

My need to be perfect and right

My self-righteous anger and indignant pontificating

My harbored resentment and projected blame

Emptied of all it had been and all it had known so that it could be made new:

A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you; and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. (Ezekiel 36:26)
