666 – Divine Power Made Manifest or the Antichrist?

A great disservice has been done to one of our numbers.  The number I am referring to is the number 6.  6 has been maligned due to book of Revelation and its reference to the number 666 as being the number of “the beast.”  While 666 did refer to a literal “beast” to an early Christian community (Roman Emperor Nero), the reference truly ends there. Unfortunately, literalist interpreters of scripture have taken the 666 ball and run with it, maligning 666 along with the number 6 by associating it with the Antichrist, the devil, Satan, temptation, hellfire and damnation (so much so that in medieval times, those born with a sixth finger on one hand were killed for being a child of Satan).  In truth, the number 6 has nothing to do with evil, the devil or the Antichrist, but instead has everything to do with Divine Will and making it manifest on the earth.

But, before I get into the serious stuff….two fun video clips from Sesame Street on the merits of number six:

Now, back to business… fully comprehend the number 6 and what it represented before certain institutions go their hands on it, we have to turn the clock back a few thousand years to the advent of gematria.  Gematria is defined as:  an Assyro-Babylonian system of numerology later adopted by Jews that assigns numerical value to a word or phrase in the belief that words or phrases with identical numerical values bear some relation to each other or bear some relation to the number itself.  The earliest Hebrew use of gematria is in the association of numbers with the individual letters of the Hebrew alphabet (Aleph-Bet).  Vav, the sixth letter in the Hebrew alphabet is the symbol of completion, redemption and transformation. Vav, in the shape of a hook, represents reaching “up” toward heaven and bringing it down to earth, representing the famous wisdom statement, “As above, so below” – or as Jesus would have said, “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and all these things will be added unto you,” or as Jesus further implored in the Lord’s Prayer, “thy Kingdom come.”

6, therefore, represents the process of seeking Divine guidance so as to make Divine will manifest on this earth plane.  In the Hermetic school, this process was called alchemy and was the task of the magi.  In Indigeneous cultures, this was the job of the shaman.   In the hands of the magi and the shaman, Divine guidance is sought through the use of creative imagination (as in shamanic journeying techniques, mystical visions or engaging in the Christian practice of Imagination/Contemplation).  In these practices Divine guidance is communicated through a symbolic narrative – a dreamlike story.  Within the experience, assignments are given and tasks are completed which somehow activate change and transformation on the physical, real-world, plane.  Heaven is brought to earth simply by engaging in the process.

From this perspective the number six then, has nothing to do with the Antichrist, but instead, has everything to do with personal power – specifically, our ability and call to connect with the Divine and to bring Divine will into manifestation in our lives.  When we engage in these practices, we are working to bring the “kingdom of God” into our earthly experience – we are bringing forth the “New Jerusalem” as envisioned in the book of Revelation.

It is important to recognize, however, that the Book of Revelation itself was never meant to be taken as prediction of the end times or as a warning of a time when the Antichrist would rule. Instead, it was written to a specific audience of Christians who were suffering under the persecution and slaughter of the Roman Emperor Nero.  Nero, was the Antichrist, “the beast” about whom the author was referring.  The gematria (number association) of his name just happens to be 666!

The book of Revelation was included in the bible because its message transcended the specific audience to which the author of Revelation was writing, and the times in which they were living.  While Revelation was about Nero and his persecution of Christians, those who assembled the bible recognized a more universal message – one communicated in the language of a shaman or mystic.  When we step back from the details (horrible beasts, harlots, plagues) and look at the wider, larger story, the universal message (beyond that of persecuted first-century Christians) becomes clear:

When we remember God (the Alpha and the Omega) as the center of our life, we experience heaven on earth.

When we forget God, we live in hell.

And as it relates to 666:

God’s goodness (three*) insures that we will find the power within ourselves to manifest heaven on earth (six) for our own highest good and for the goodness of all humanity.

*( The triple 6, (3) relates to the Hebrew letter Gimmel, which means, God’s goodness)

If this is true then why have we been led to believe that 666 is evil and to be associated the devil, hellfire and damnation?   Why would an institution want us to be fearful of our own personal power that arises in our intimate connection with God so as participate with God in bringing heaven to earth?  I’ll let you answer that question.

Embracing the Promise of New Life – New Eyes on Easter

Below is an excerpt from this week’s Agape’ Meditation Newsletter, supplement to the Authentic Freedom Virtual Church.  To learn more and subscribe, please click HERE.

Happy Easter! Welcome new life! Welcome Joy! Welcome Peace! Welcome Love! Welcome Freedom!

In dying and rising from the dead, Jesus reconciles us to God. In his human journey, Jesus came to realize the TRUTH that sets us free – the truth of our Oneness with God in love. Jesus died defending this truth and was resurrected to prove that death has no hold over us – that death is in fact, an illusion. In death, we do not simply pass away. Instead, we are simply restored to the fullness of our Oneness with God. There is no hell. No purgatory. No place of eternal punishment – only Oneness with God.

Jesus wasn’t raised from the dead just so that the gates of heaven would be open for us, however. Jesus rose so that we would realize his words were true – that the Kingdom of God is right here in our very midst. We do not have to wait until we die to experience God’s Kingdom. Freedom, Jesus promised, is available to us right here in the midst of the human condition. “As above, so below.” Heaven on earth.

The way to the experience that Jesus fully realized in his human form is to do what Jesus did. Take his teachings seriously. Follow his example.

Pray without ceasing.

Repent (return again and again to God)

Believe in the Good News

The Kingdom of God is at hand.

Feed the hungry.

Clothe the naked.

Heal the sick.

Set captives free.

Love God above all else.

And your neighbor as yourself.

EVERYONE is your neighbor!

Pray for your enemies.

Turn the other cheek.

Judge not (lest ye be judged)

Forgive 70 times 70 times.

Love one another as Jesus loved us.

As we do what Jesus did, we experience new life for ourselves.

Our Own Burning Bush – the Call of the Heavensent

The Lord God said, “I have witnessed your affliction my people and have heard your cries of complaint against your oppressors, so I know well what you are suffering.  Therefore, I have initiated an extraordinary Divine intervention, to rescue you from your oppressors; leading you out of the land of slavery into a good and gracious land, a land flowing with milk and honey.

Exodus 3: 7-8

Moses and the Burning Bush

These are the words of the great “I AM” spoken to Moses, several thousand years ago through the burning bush.  In these words were the Lord’s invitation to the Israelite people to leave behind the life of slavery that they had known under Egyptian rule and to embark upon a journey of freedom to a land as yet unknown which the Lord promised would be “flowing with milk and honey.”

Our own Burning Bush

As much as these were God’s words to the Israelites several thousand years ago, these are God’s words for us TODAY as we suffer under the oppression of our own slavery.  In this case, the oppression God is inviting us to escape is the slavery of fear and the specific ways in which fear has come to rule our inner lives and the ways in which fear has manifest in our world in its various guises of consumerism, racism, discrimination, sexism, separation, hatred, environmental collapse, corporate greed, government corruption, violence and war. The Lord knows well how the world has suffered under the imprisonment of fear and as such, has initiated an extraordinary Divine intervention which promises to turn the world of fear into a world of love.  And the great thing is that this new world that we are envisioning doesn’t require an exodus from where we are now.  The land of milk and honey is right here in our very midst, if we but have the courage to set aside fear and instead, to choose love.

A Million Moses’

The extraordinary Divine intervention that God has initiated is in the form of what I will call today “A million Moses’.”  The million Moses’ are all those on the planet who were gifted before they were even conceived, with the vision of a new world and who were born with both the knowing of what this world could look like and the passion to help make it happen.   I have called these men, women and children “The Heavensent,” for that is exactly what they are – sent by God to turn the world from fear into love.  You already know who you are. You have carried within you a vision for a better world.    You know at the very deepest part of your being that the vision of the new world that you carry within you is possible.  You possess the desire and the passion to want to do something about it and to be a part of making the new world real. Consider this your call….your own burning bush.  You are the Heavensent.  You are one of the million Moses’. Open your heart to how God is specifically calling you to help bring forth a world made of love, no longer controlled by fear.  Knowing that the journey of billions starts with you – become familiar with your own inner fears and how they are controlling your life.  Find tools for transcending those fears so that your inner terrain will be defined by contentment and love.  Make decisions based in love instead of fear.  Know freedom within yourself so that you can become acquainted with your own uniquely creative gifts through which you will find meaning, purpose and fulfillment and through which you will contribute to the betterment of the world.  Then grab your staff and your wand and start sharing your magic so that others may also be free.

Thank you for your help!

For the Poor Souls in Purgatory

As a young child, I formulated a specific and personal prayer that became the preamble to all my prayers – my prayers upon waking, before going to sleep, and the prayers I said every Sunday before attending the Catholic mass.  I’m not sure where I came up with these words, though I suspect they were influenced by my mother, who first taught me how to pray, and perhaps by my fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Hodgson, who was especially devout.  The prayer goes like this:

Dear Lord, I offer everything I have to you and to the poor souls in purgatory.

I no longer believe in purgatory in the way that I did as a child as “the place where we go after we die to be purged of our sin so we can one day enter heaven.”  Instead, I often consider our human experience to be a kind of purgatory – a place we come to learn how to be human, and then, if we are paying attention, the place where we have an opportunity to learn ways of transcending our suffering, thereby discovering in the human condition a kind of heaven on earth.  While my beliefs about purgatory have changed, I still find myself drawn to this prayer, “Lord, I offer everything I have to you and to the poor souls in purgatory.”  Who are the “poor souls in purgatory?”  All of humanity, especially those who are suffering.  (Here’s a great YouTube clip which illustrates what purgatory feels like! From the movie What Dreams May Come:

Looking to Birth our Soul

Since embarking upon this work, that I call for lack of a better word, ministry, a common theme has been revealed about those drawn toward my service.  In essence, those who find themselves drawn to my ministry are those in search for their Soul (you might also call that, true self, higher self, most authentic self, truth, path, etc.).  They might not know that it is the Soul for which they are seeking, but in the end, this is always at the root of the longing; suffering; restlessness; grief; relationship issues; physical, emotional or mental pain; that brought them to my doorstep in the first place.  I’m never quite sure about how they find me in the first place, and oftentimes neither are they.  As such, I can only give credit to God – that something in their Soul that reaches out for the remedy to its longing, and in the Soul’s search, it somehow finds me.  I am always humbled and in awe over the work, and over what transpires once it is begun.  The miracles that occur, the truths that break through, the healing that occurs, is way beyond me and my tiny human capabilities and I am reminded over and over and over that it is not me doing the work, but God working through me.  And I know that it is God working through me because of the beyond-human experiences that transpire.

Who is your Soul Calling you to Serve and How?

Ultimately, I believe that the birth of the Soul is about each and every one of us discovering how we are uniquely called to serve “the poor souls in purgatory.”  Each of us have been uniquely and creatively gifted to find fulfillment, peace, joy and love and to serve the betterment of humankind.  Who is your Soul calling you to serve and how?

Living Inside Out, Experiencing Heaven on Earth

We are spiritual beings living a human experience….what happens when we actually believe this and allow it to be true?  We just might experience heaven on earth!

Heaven Can’t Wait!

What is your idea of heaven?  If you are like most raised in the Western spiritual traditions, heaven is some place “up there” in a galaxy far, far away where we might go after we die, if we are good enough or follow the rules like we are supposed to, but (only if you are Catholic) you might have to take a detour in purgatory for awhile burning off the remaining sins that have not yet been forgiven.  Heaven feels far away, possibly unattainable and jealously guarded by the old man in the sky God with clipboard in hand determinining if you should stay or you should go (to that other place…..hell….argh!)  While this may be what many of our Western religions teach us about heaven, this was not really Jesus’ idea of heaven.  What Jesus reminded his disciples over and over and over was that the peace, contentment and joy that we imagine as heaven is not in some galaxy far far away, but is right here, right now in our very midst.  AND….”heaven” cannot wait for us to discover and embrace it!

Lost in Translation

The word that Jesus used to describe what we might call “heaven” or as is usually translated in scripture as “kingdom of God” is the Aramaic word, Malkuthakh.  As I discuss in Chapter Two of Authentic Freedom – Claiming a Life of Contentment and Joy, While malkuthakh can be taken to mean kingdom, it is actually feminine in its form, and could be even better understood to mean “queendom.” While this idea implies further discussion for all those religious structures based upon the idea of a masculine God, even queendom does not fully express the fullest depth of meaning in the word malkuthakh.  Thanks to the work of Neil Douglas-Klotz in his book Prayers of the Cosmos, we now understand malkuthakh to mean something more like:

“Malkuthakh” (kingdomof God) is the determined
extension of the Universal Source of power which draws us toward unity
(Oneness) and the visible and experienced sign of that Oneness.  It is that which draws us to Oneness and the
experience of Oneness itself.  In achieving this Oneness, we have reached the fullness of our potential and so has God.

When we throw this into the mix of Jesus’ teachings on the “kingdom”, we get a much bigger picture than what we have previously been invited to explore.  That which we call heaven may be perceived as outside of us, but even more urgent is the invitation to recognize the kingdom that lives within us, among us and all around us.

Asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus said in reply, “The coming of the kingdom of God cannot be observed, and no one will announce, ‘Look, here it is,’ or ‘There it is.’  For behold, the kingdom of God is within and among you.”

Luke 17: 20-21

Eternal Sunshing of the Spotless Mind

So if heaven cannot wait and it is right here in our very midst, how do we get there?  The answer is easy and was revealed through the wise women who gather on Monday evenings at Authentic Freedom Ministries.  Here were their answers to this quandary:

Empty yourself and there you’ll find everything

We are being invited to live inside out

I need to lose myself to God

As above, so below

That pretty much sums up the magical formula of how we let go of the things that are currently standing in our way of knowing heaven on earth….right here, right now.  Lose yourself to God.  Become empty so that the Divine can live in and through you.  Turn yourself inside out and let the spiritual being live on the outside instead of the illusions of the human condition that usually live there.  Recognize the beauty of heaven that is right here – peace, contentment, joy, bliss, love, compassion, mercy, justice.  It is all right here…if we only have the eyes to see.  Let the sunshine in and allow it to shine through the darkness that usually clouds our thoughts and our minds.  It is all right here just waiting for us to see and BELIEVE it!  What are we waiting for????

Let the Sunshine In!

And if that isn’t enough to convince you, here is a link to my FAVORITE song of all time and the song that first inspired me at the ripe young age of 4 1/2 to embark upon this fabulous journey:

What have been your images of heaven?

How are you being invited to expand this vision?

How might you begin to experience heaven on earth, RIGHT NOW!?
