Magdalene at the Front Door – The Dream that Started it All

Today’s blog continues my experiment with Hildegard of Bingen medicine – sharing my visions in the hopes of supporting the healing and release of 9 months of migraines, panic attacks, vertigo and other things! In today’s blog, I share the dream that started it all….the dream in which Mary Magdalene came knocking at my front door.

Mary Magdalene by Dana Lumby
Mary Magdalene by Dana Lumby

It’s been so many years since I was visited upon by “the dream that started it all”… that I can’t even be sure of the exact date, or even the year, but I know that it was when my children were quite young – 2 and 4 years old respectively, I think, and it was when their father and I were still together. The dream took place in the home in which we were living – a lavender, story-and-a-half  Victorian cottage with a wrap-around front porch and two “front” doors – one on the front of the house that entered directly into the formal living room and the other on the side of the house which entered into the sitting room.  The latter was the door we used to enter and exit the home and the door we thought of as “the front door.”

In the dream, I dreamed that I was sleeping beside my husband in our second floor bedroom and our children were fast asleep in their respective rooms, only feet away from our own. I was “awakened” from my sleep (in the dream) by a knocking at the front door of the house.  I “woke up” (while still in the dream) and got out of bed.  I walked out of our bedroom and down the hall to the stairs.  I descended the stairs which emptied into the sitting room.  The room was dimly lit and as I gazed across the room at the front door, I could see a hooded figure standing on the other side of the curtained window of the front door, standing just beneath the brightly lit porch light.  I “heard” a voice say, “Open the door.” Strangely unafraid, I went to the door and opened it as I had been asked.  Standing on the other side was a woman about my height – or maybe a little taller – with long, dark, curling hair, wearing a dark red hooded cloak.  The hood of the cloak was pulled up over the crown of her head casting a shadow over her face so I couldn’t quite make out her features. Her face was gazing down toward something she held in her hands.  I followed her gaze and saw that in her hands she held a smallish wooden chest crafted in dark, weathered wood.  The wooden chest looked ancient, but well cared-for.  She held the wooden chest out toward me and as my hands reached out to receive it, the curved lid of the box opened.

Inside the box, lying on a bed of purple velvet, was my own heart. As I took the box with my heart in it from her hands, a rush of images filled my mind – images of Snow White, the evil queen, the box that was to contain Snow White’s heart, a half-bitten apple, the Son of a King, and the kiss that awakened the sleeping princess.

Then I looked into the eyes of the woman in the red cloak and saw that the woman looking back at me was me. In silent words I heard her say, “I Am the Magdalene,” strangely something I had known all along.

Love Activations II

On Friday, January 9th, I posted a blog entitled Love Activations.  Since posting this blog, additional information has come in, along with a clear visual that we are no longer living in the 3D world, but have stepped fully into the new and true world – a world rooted in compassion and love and no longer guided by fear.

Love Activations Part II

First, read the first seven steps from Friday’s blog HERE.  What I have learned since Friday is that the love we are being called to embody needs our assistance so that it can fully ground within us.  Here are the steps I was given:

8) as you feel the fullness of the love in your heart, imagine the energy of this love spiraling down through your body in a clockwise direction, down through the lower chakras, through your legs, your feet and moving down through the earth, wrapping around the core of the earth.

9) Once this feels complete, return to your awareness to the energy in your heart and spiral it down in a counterclockwise direction in the same way as #8 above.

10) After this feels complete, visualize the love in your heart spraying upward toward the heavens and out into the world.

The most critical part of this practice is embodying the love and allowing it to be fully received into our body and anchored on this earth plane.  Return to this practice again and again as you feel the powerful energies attempting to be received into your body.  Remember – love is the most powerful energy we can be and receive.  As such, until we fully integrate this new (original) expression of love, it might feel disconcerting, anxious, even fearful.  Just keep spiraling the love through your body into the earth and allow the excess to fly out of you into the universe and all will be well. And know that this is all preparation /confirmation that we are crossing the threshold into the new world – a world rooted in love and no longer controlled by fear.

Tomorrow:  Crossing the Threshold!

Later this week:  Magic is real!

Love – the true fulfillment

Agape meditation newsletter, supplement to the Authentic Freedom Virtual Church service for Sunday, September 7, 2014.  The theme:  LOVE

Scripture Reading:

Brothers and sisters: Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery; you shall not kill; you shall not steal; you shall not covet, ” and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law.

Rom 13: 8-10

Additional Readings:

Ez 33: 7-9

Ps 95: 1-2, 6-9

Mt 18: 15-20

Love – the fulfillment of the law

As St. Paul observed, there is nothing else we need to learn in the human experience if we learn how to love. Coming to know the love that is our true and original nature, and then living as that love in the world, IS the “do-all, end-all, be-all” we are all looking for. When we know this love, we are happy, content, fulfilled and we know peace. When we live this love, we act accordingly. We no longer act out of our fearful and compulsive natures, instead acting only out of love. This is how we come to experience “heaven on earth” and how we show others to do the same. When we live out of the love that we are, we act as a mirror, causing the spark of love that lives within others to be awakened. Of course, they have to decide what to do with that spark of love. But even should they reject or turn away from that love, the love that we know within ourselves causes us to have compassion for those who are unable to accept the love that they are.

What would the world look like if everyone came to know the love that they are and then chose to live that love in the world?

How are you called to more fully embrace the love that is your true and original nature?

Spiritual Practices – Let’s Pretend

“Fake it ‘til you make it” is a helpful sentiment when attempting to remember the love that is our true and original nature. In embracing this sentiment, we are taking a leap of faith – entertaining the possibility that LOVE really IS our original nature….and not the fears and compulsions that tend to make up the human experience. For this exercise, you will be invited to momentarily set aside any doubts about love being your original nature and PRETEND that you believe. And if you already believe love to be your original nature, than this exercise will be even easier.

  • Sit in silence.
  • Believe that love is your original nature.
  • Imagine this love as a source of bright green or fuschia light originating in the center of your chest, near your heart.
  • While sitting in silence, draw your attention to this light of love in the center of your chest and rest there.
  • When you find your attention straying, bring it back to the light of love in your heart.
  • Believe that as you hold your attention on this source of love within you, that your believe in this love is growing stronger.
  • Believe that as you hold your attention on this love, that you are being healed of any inner obstacles to believing more fully in this love.
  • Believe that this love is cleansing and healing you of any places of past hurt or betrayal.
  • Continue this attention and awareness exercise for 20-30 minutes.
  • Record your thoughts, feelings and experiences of this exercise in your notebook or journal.

Authentic Freedom

In Authentic Freedom, we acknowledge the heart chakra as the energy center that corresponds with love. It is through the heart chakra and its related physical, emotional, mental and spiritual correspondences that love resides, along with all of our life experiences which have been a denial of this love. The effects of grief, disappointment, loss and betrayal are all housed within the heart chakra, hampering our ability to love freely. In order to know more fully the love that we are and to live that love more fully in the world, we need to find healing for the past hurts that have hindered our ability to love. Healing comes through active grieving and through diligent attention to forgiveness practices. Being freed of these past wounds, we are more able to love – both ourselves and others with the unconditional love that is our original nature.

What past hurts, losses, betrayals, disappointments are you aware of that may be compromising your ability to know the love that you are and live that love more freely in the world?

How might you support yourself, or seek outside support for healing these past wounds?

Seeking Soul Mates, Twin Flames, The Beloved One

This is for all those men and women I know who have known the call of the Beloved – compelled to seek soul mates, twin flames, the True One, The One…..whatever your name for that, and struggling with the longing and the knowledge of an amazing kind of love.

Where You Once Were

Torn and tangled shreds of my heart

From where you once were –

when we were still one.

Tree-branch hands

Brittle and twisted

Thrashing in the wind

Reaching into the void

Beyond myself and all I’ve tried to be.

Crying out in anguish

Longing for your return.

No matter how hard I try –

Pretending courage and strength

Independence and self-sufficiency –

In your absence,

I’m always less than one.

Knowing and feeling you as

the missing parts of my soul.

And no matter where I am grasping,

My hands returning empty…

Like the place in my heart

Where you once were.

A New Heart

I will give them a new heart and put a new spirit within them; I will remove the stony heart from their bodies and replace it with a heart of flesh, so that they will live according to my statutes, and observe and carry out my ordinances; thus they shall be my people and I will be their God.

Ezekiel 11:19

Today’s blog comes from an exercise completed by one of my clients who generously agreed to share their process with you.  The assignment I gave them was based on the reading from Ezekiel above.  I invited them to draw two images – the first of their own stony heart, and the second image, the new heart that God is giving them.  BREATHTAKING!  What do your hearts look like?

When the Heart Speaks

Today’s blog explores journaling as a spiritual practice and what can happen when we let our body speak.

Journaling as a Spiritual Practice

When people ask me when I knew I was a writer, I have to scratch my head in confusion.  When was I never NOT a writer would perhaps be a better question.  I don’t think I have never NOT been a writer, and my writing passion and gift began to emerge more and more fully the more I gave myself over to the spiritual practice of journaling.  I was first invited to practice journaling in a high school Theology class ( I attended Catholic schools) and when in the Pastoral Ministry training program, journaling was one of the requirments of supervision.  I came to discover that God spoke to me most loudly and most plainly through my pen….and so I wrote, I wrote and I wrote:  scripture reflections, ponderings, etc.  I did the majority of my personal, inner processing through my pen and when things were really bad, poetry bled forth onto my page in shades of deep indigo (I ONLY write in blue ink….specifically Papermate medium point).  I have discovered guidance, comfort, healing and insight through my pen.  As such, journaling is an important part of my daily spiritual practice.   (For more on journaling as a spiritual practice, check out Spiritual Journaling by Julie Tallard Johnson.)

Writing Prompts

Yesterday, in search of some spiritual and creative inspiration, I turned to The I-Ching for Writers by Sarah Jane Sloane.  I flipped through the pages to find my “reading” for the day and received this writing prompt:  Write a one-page monologue as spoken to you by the part of your body that hurts. I asked my body, “Ok, who wants to speak today?”  My heart quickly stepped forward, “I am hurting and I would like to speak.”  “Darn it!” I thought.  “I am sick to death of hearing from my mangled and beaten heart.”  I sighed in resignation and handed over my pen….and boy am I glad I did.  Yesterday, this is what my heart had to say:

When the Heart Speaks:

Yes Lauri, I am hurting and bruised; but I am not broken.  I’m really more resilient than you give me credit for.  Do you think I’m really going to be shattered beyond repair for the reasons you think I might be?  Not hardly!  In truth, it is your ego that is hurting, not your heart.  I am strong beyond imagining…..which means you are strong beyond imagining.  Keep in mind that “heart” is the root of your word, “courage” and you my dear, are courageous beyond compare BECAUSE you are strong of heart.  This is how God made you because God foresaw the life that would unfold before you and the courage you would need to persevere.  It requires great courage to move through the challenges that have been placed before you and to lead the charge toward mental, emotional and spiritual freedom.  It takes enormous courage to leave behind what one knows, to turn the finger of blame into self-awareness and accountability and to name and claim not only woundedness and fear but to identify ones gifts and boldly share them in the world.  But more than all of this, it takes enourmous courage to love – and this you have done well.  You have loved generously, freely, without condition while still maintaining appropriate boundaries and remaining true to yourself.    I am not broken, weakened or blocked.  I will not fail you or betray you for in you I am strong and with every courageous act, I become stronger.  Too strong to be brought down by disappointment.  Too strong to be destroyed by misplaced blame.  Too strong to be intimidated by another’s unclaimed and projected fears.  I am strong in you because you are strong and in this there is nothing to fear.

How might journaling be a helpful practice in your own spiritual journey?

What part of you is hurting and might like to speak through your pen?

What would your heart have to say to you today?

Saying Yes To God

http://www.ishalerner.com

Dear Readers,

I want to thank you for being a loving and supportive witness as I have moved through this past year of listening and attempting to discern God’s call for me in my life – specifically in this year of dramatic change (divorce, etc.).  Today is the day I step into what I can best discern as God’s invitation for me to step more fully into my call/role of “priest.”  I hesitate to even use that word because of the negative connotations this word brings up for many, and for fear of being caught up in my own compulsion of pride.  When I use the word “priest” here, what I really mean is VESSEL – specifically, a vessel through which other people are empowered to:

REMEMBER the Love that they Are

And I do this through the sharing of my own gifts and the tools that I have gathered along the way that help us to come to know ourselves more fully, to come to know God more fully and to identify, name, claim, cultivate and eventually share our own unique gifts in the world.

So, as the Authentic Freedom Ministry team launches our Sunday services, I thank you.  I thank you for listening, for holding space, for accompanying us on this journey….and I thank you for your thoughts and prayers of support.   And today, I have a special request – I ask that as we create a space of contempative worship, that you hold us in your prayers…..and more importantly, that you hold in prayer those who feel called to join us for contemplative worship this evening and in the days and weeks ahead.  For twenty years I have observed the dramatic transformation and healing that takes place in people when they allow themselves to be open to the contemplative journey, and I expect the same to take place in the minds and hearts of those who will find their way to our Sunday gatherings.  So I too, will hold them in prayer.

Blessings to you as we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany…..the day when three dudes from the East recognized the miraculous Presence of the Divine in a star, had the faith to follow that star to destinations unknown and who discovered the love of God in the heart of a child.

In love and light,

Lauri Lumby

Hope Walks In

Today’s blog asks the question, “Where do we find hope?”

Brothers and sisters:

Hope does not disappoint,

because the love of God

has been poured out into our hearts

through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

Romans: 5:5

Where is the Hope?

As any human being who is honest with themselves and the rest of the world will admit…..the human condition sucks!  We suffer disappointment, loss, death, disease, war, pestilence, hunger, homelessness, broken hearts and broken dreams.  In the face of all these challenges, we are tempted to believe, “Life sucks, and then you die.”  If this is true, why did we agree to this human experience in the first place and why do we stay here to endure sure suffering and pain?  In a word – HOPE!

Planted in our Hearts

Whether we simply believe in the resilience of human nature or in the idea of a benevolent Creator/God…..there is something within us that keeps us going in spite of the sure suffering and pain of the human condition.  Paul, in his letter to the Romans, called that “something” HOPE.  Hope is the thing that keeps us moving in the midst of tragedy.  Hope is what keeps us alive in the face of death.  Hope is what keeps us believing in a better day, life, existence.  Hope, as Paul describes, is God’s love, planted in our heart, driving us, compelling us, fueling us, moving us.  Hope allows us to dream beyond the pain and imagine better things, better days, better dreams.  Hope opens our eyes to see beyond the veil of suffering to the hidden glory – the new life in the midst of death, the new possibilities beyond perceived failure, the new love beyond betrayal.  Hope allows us to see beyond the limitations of our human eyes to see with the eyes of the Divine.

Claiming Hope as Our Own

But where do we find this hope when we feel that all is lost?  The answer – WITHIN.  As Paul reminds, hope is found in our hearts in our intimate connection with that which we might call God.  And the way to get there?  (Have I beat this horse dead yet?)  PRAYER…  MEDITATION… SPIRITUAL PRACTICE…CREATIVE ENDEAVORS…LOVING CONNECTIONS WITH OTHERS…   To find the hope we think we have lost, we need only return to that which is closest to us….our inner selves, God, love.  So when you feel beat down by the human condition, when you feel disappointed, despairing, alone……GO WITHIN.  Pray.  Meditate.  Paint.  Draw.  Write.  Cook.  Practice Yoga. Sing. Dance.  Spend time with someone you love.  This is where you will rediscover that spark of hope that will keep you moving and help you see the light in the midst of the darkness.

What are the practices that have helped you rediscover hope?

How do you make it through the struggles of the human condition?

How do you know the God in your heart?

May the Force be with You

Welcome to today’s guest blogger, Karen Schmidt, MSE, NCC – Professional Counselor with Avilan Counseling.  Karen shares her 3am visitations of Spirit.  In this visitation, the Spirit invites us all to embrace our own inner Jedi training on the path to spiritual growth and enlightenment!  May the Force be with You!

Inner Resources
“We have the resources already; though on the surface those resources will always look over-matched, hopeless, dwarfed, nonsensical, wishful thinking. On the surface, invariably, we will look like David before Goliath, puny and pathetic, not up to the task of defeating a giant or feeding a hungry, greedy world.”

3am Visitations
I awoke at the glorious 3am hour and tossed and turned until I finally listened. “READ ROLHEISER!!” … the Voice had spoken. It’s been a long time since I’ve been stirred at dawn and even longer since I’ve read Ron’s column, and I was more than a bit resistant as I was warm and comfy in my bed! BUT being led by Spirit I submitted my will and set my warm feet on cold floors.   Besides we all know … God is a nag! As my warm feet hit the cold floors (did I say that already??) I was reminded of how growth is the choice to be uncomfortable.

Like David before Goliath (or Luke before Darth Vader)

The beginning words were taken from Ron Rolheiser’s reflection on Jesus’ instructions to feed the masses with a few fish and loaves of bread. This, of course, was followed by the confused look from the disciples as they muttered WTF! Although most of the column was … ummm … luke warm … THIS imagery whomped me over the head… the DUH of the Dawn!
It succinctly and clearly describes what we have been feeling … standing here “like David before Goliath, puny and pathetic, not up to the task of defeating the giant or feeding a hungry, greedy world.’

Slaying the Giant

The “giant” has many names (ego, fear, insecurity, the unknown, uncertainty) and it’s unique to each of our journeys and yet the same giant. Anyone who is actively and consciously growing is choosing to be uncomfortable … they are facing Goliath.  Standing in front of him with seemingly limited resources wondering “How in the hell am I gonna do this!?” or “What the hell am I supposed to do?!” or “WTF!”  But the truth is we have an abundance of resources at our disposal.

Heart Wisdom – connecting with The Force

When we listen with our heart we can hear the direction in which to move. This can be challenging because we have been educated to think with our “head” making it difficult to hear the heart. Moreover the head follows the over-embraced knowledge of this world, whereas, the heart follows the sadly dismissed wisdom from beyond. But with trust, practice, discernment and courage we can cultivate our heart skills once again! It may not be the easiest direction, nor the most logical, and it will most likely send us straight into battle with the giant. WHO would listen to such directions??  Warriors! Jedi! Wild Women! Half Bloods!  People who actively and consciously chose to be uncomfortable while following their heart. And WHY would they choose such silliness?? Because they KNOW the secret!!!  That sadly dismissed wisdom from beyond is BEYOND what our heads can comprehend. It is our natural ability to tap into the unseen world.  It is what the Christians call “Christ energy” and the Jedi call “The Force”.  Whatever we call it, we all have more than enough resources to overcome the “giant” in our life. We are so much more than the sum of our seen parts … we are but a mere spec in a mostly unseen and benevolent world.

Jedi Training

When we are ‘fighting the good fight’, or on the path to developing our highest self, we need to LISTEN, TRUST and ACT on the instincts of our heart. WHY the heart?? The heart center is the bridge between the two worlds – as above so below – the sacred heart- the intersection of our humanity and divinity. Following the heart is not the easiest path and it requires training to listen and discern the heart’s true message … call it Jedi training! But once aligned with this unseen Force we can’t go wrong.
“Use the Force, Luke, use the Force!”
