Guest Post: Is There No King in You?

Today’s post comes from one of the amazing women who are currently participating in my Live/online course, The Gospel of Mary Magdalene.  The following came forth through a meditation activity I invited the participants to enter into with a scripture reading from the prophet Micah.  I share Louisa’s beautiful (passionate) response to Micah’s question followed by the scripture itself.  Thank you Louisa for this passionate and truthful response!  A note to the reader:  Read this sharing in the voice of a passionate and perhaps a bit angry and frustrated woman! (You know, we’ve all been there!) Selah!

In Response to Micah:

“Is there no King in you?”

There is a visceral reaction to these words.  Words that value my courage, my tenacity, my worth, based on the internalized masculine.

There is no King in me.

He would only get in my way and obstruct me with his ridiculous rules, his lust for power, his striving in ignorance to feed his insatiable ego.

There is no King in me.

He would slow me down with his mansplaining and denial of the emotions that are woven through me and make me juicy and complex.

If there were a King here,

My labor would stall.  I would be expected to birth in silence, suppressing my creative needs, and bringing forth only that which he deemed worthy.

Without my inner King,

I am fierce. I bring forth life. I connect the fertile Earth beneath me with the Celestial Majesty above.

Unlike him,

I don’t live on the Earth, squeezing every resource I can from her for my own self- aggrandizement.  I live of the Earth, in the Earth, from the Earth, and by the Earth.

No, there is no King in me.

I don’t have that kind of time to waste.

So, tell me instead,

“Is there no Queen in you?”

Louisa Foster

Micah 4: 8-13

And you, O tower of the flock,
hill of daughter Zion,
to you it shall come,
the former dominion shall come,
the sovereignty of daughter Jerusalem.

Now why do you cry aloud?
Is there no king in you?
Has your counselor perished,

that pangs have seized you like a woman in labor?
Writhe and groan,O daughter Zion,
like a woman in labor;
for now you shall go forth from the city
and camp in the open country;
you shall go to Babylon.

There you shall be rescued,
there the Lord will redeem you
from the hands of your enemies.

Now many nations
are assembled against you,
saying, “Let her be profaned,
and let our eyes gaze upon Zion.”
But they do not know
the thoughts of the Lord;
they do not understand his plan,
that he has gathered them as sheaves to the threshing floor.
Arise and thresh,
O daughter Zion,
for I will make your horn iron
and your hoofs bronze;
you shall beat in pieces many peoples,
and shall devote their gain to the Lord,
their wealth to the Lord of the whole earth.

Our Divine Mother Speaks

The Mother says:

“I got it from here. There is nothing more for you to do or to heal or clear.  Simply step into my embrace and let me carry you.”

5000 years ago when the warring hoards stormed into the fertile lands with their vengeful and jealous god, I have been barred from the human race. Supplanted in favor of a god who is only male and mostly angry, I was forced into the shadows, along with my Beloved partner – the God of love.

Rejected by the human race in favor of a god who manipulates through fear, power and control, We withdrew to a place behind the veil until the day we knew would one day come, when humanity would grow tired of the violence that comes in worshipping only fear.

While remaining in the shadows, We have never forgotten Our love for the world that We created or of the beings we made to walk upon her verdant soil. Neither have we ever stopped loving our children – even though they rejected Our image and Our love.

We are the love that existed before time.

We are the love that brought all things into being.

We are the love that resides in your hearts waiting to be catch fire in you so that you can become the magnificent creatures We made you to be.

The Psalmist knew us. She called us Darkness and Light; Wisdom and Truth.

Solomon’s lover knew us. She called us Lover and Beloved.

Jesus knew us as Mother and Father.

John the Beloved, knew us as Word and Wisdom, Alpha and Omega, The Queen of Heaven and her King.

To those who were opened, We whispered Our Presence, revealing Ourselves in magnificent visions of love and light. Throughout history our Presence has been made known through the saints, the prophets and the mystics, and to those with ears to hear and eyes to see.  In spite of the voice of these who see and heard and knew, humanity continued to choose fear over the Presence and Action of love.

Once again it seems humanity is at a crossroads, which is why We have chosen, once again, one from among you (one among many) to be our voice. Speaking through our daughter Lauri, The Mother now speaks:

My dear and beloved children, there are no human words to express the great and abiding love I have for you – a love greater than any human love you have ever known. A love greater than the love you have for your own children.  A love greater than your parents’ love for you.

As your Divine Mother, the One who loved you into being, I love you simply because I made you. In this, you are a part of Me. You don’t have to earn my love and my love cannot be taken away. You are never, ever, ever, separate from my love, you only think that you are.  You think that you are separate because you believe love is in the mind and you seek to find it there, instead of turning to Me in your heart where I have always been.

In this love I have for you, because you are a part of me and I am the Divine embodiment of love itself, I want so much for you – so much more than you will ever allow or create for yourselves, as long as you continue to believe yourself to be separate from my love. There is nothing you can do and nothing you need to heal or clear to be One with my love.  You need simply step into my embrace and let me carry you to where my love wants you to be.  Knowing the love that you are and living that love freely and unencumbered in your own unique way through the gifts I have given you so that you may be my love in the world and so that the world might remember:

Once upon a time, the world was only love.

Remember me and the world will be this love again.

Mary Magdalene – modern day goddess

In anticipation of the release of my upcoming novel, Song of the Beloved – the Gospel According to Mary Magdalene, I will be sharing with you some old and new writings on the Magdalene.  Today, words from the remarkable artist who provided the cover for my book, Toni Carmine Salerno.  Thank you Toni for your generous witness!

I Could Not Have Said it Better!

How does one concisely describe the woman, Mary Magdalene, what she represents as a model of devotion  and what she has to teach us as we move into a new era of Christian witness?  I have written millions of words reflecting on this woman who I look to as model for my own journey.  Not long ago, I was presented with a resource that explained Mary Magdalene in a concise and direct manner, better than what I could come up with on my own.  So today, I share with you the beautiful words of artist and visionary, Toni Carmine Salerno:

To me, Magdalene is not solely a bibilical figure; rather, she is a modern day Goddess who holds a most sacred and ancient wisdom: organic and tactile, and deeply connected to our beautiful planet.  Magdalene lives eternally through present day women and she will no doubt continue to be a source of inspiration for women in generations to come.

Her wisdom is beyond words, images or concepts.  She is an archetypal spirit, soft and gentle, yet strong and unswayable.  Magdalene stands firmly in her truth, representing strength and dignity.

She assists in elevating the status of women around the globe and helps to free both men and women from the closed mind sets that have kept the true beauty, wisdom and creative essence of the feminine spirit from fully emerging.

The Magdalene stands proud regardless of what others think of her or how they choose to label her.  For centuries there have been many who have sought to diminish her worth through lies, intimidation and even physical and emotional abuse.  Yet, in spite of this, Magdalene’s presence and influence remains.

Magdalene is the dancing Dark Goddess of gentle strength and authority, bearer of infinite compassion.  She is the healer of the wounded feminine, healing the desolate places of the heart, where lie the issues of abaondonment and betrayal which all women (and men) carry.  She holds up to them the mirror of their true nature, in which they will see themselves reflected in all their beauty and power and thereby step into their wholeness.

In My Own Words

If (for those of Christian orientation), Jesus is “the Way,” then Mary Magdalene is the map.  She shows us the way to compassion and oneness through her attentive devotion to her Rabbouni (teacher), her generous and compassionate service and her brave and daring witness.  Against societal norms and in spite of the protestations of her fellow disciples, she stood boldly in the truths that were revealed to her and she stayed true to what Jesus had shown her and taught her.  In short….Mary Magdalene rocks!

What does Mary Magdalene represent to you?

How can you look to Mary Magdalene as a model of Christian witness?

How are you being invited to stand in your truth, in spite of the protests of those around you?

Goddesses – Mysteries of the Feminine Divine, a book review

Being raised Catholic, with the “old man in the sky God;” presided over by an exclusively male priesthood; I often felt as if something was missing.  How could the God of unconditional love only be male and only choose men to lead “HIS” Church?  If God loves us without condition and if we are indeed “made in the image and likeness of God, where was the God in whose image I was made?  Furthermore, wouldn’t women, then be equally worthy to lead God’s Church? While the veneration of Mary somewhat satisfied these longings, she still wasn’t God. These questions eventually led me on the search for a feminine image of God that I could call my own, and one that I intuitively knew could be found.

Gratefully, I was not the only one troubled by the exclusively male God of the Western religious traditions and have found much comfort in the research that has been accomplished in uncovering the abundant examples of the Feminine Divine in cultures and religions across epochs, including Her presence in the Judeo-Christian tradition.

In, Goddesses – Mysteries of the Feminine Divine, by Joseph Campbell, I have found another worthy resource in my on-going exploration of the Feminine Divine.  Whereas some of the conclusions Campbell presents have since been refuted (ie: the absence of the feminine divine within the Hebrew tradition), this collection provides a worthy addition to the study of the Feminine Divine, and unlike many books written on this topic, Campbell presents this topic in a way that is accessible to anyone.

In this collection of previously unpublished lectures, given to lay audiences in the 1980’s, the reader will get an overview of the research contemporary to the time.  Campbell reveals a rich tradition of the Feminine Divine, along with a contemporary challenge to set aside our exclusively male gods with their resulting hierarchies and patriarchies and make room for the Feminine. Balancing the masculine and the feminine, Campbell argues, may be the remedy to the disease of power and control that currently plagues our world, proving once again, the prophetic vision of Joseph Campbell.

If you are a fan of Joseph Campbell or interested in the Feminine Divine, I highly recommend this book.

Why Mary Rocks

In the Catholic calendar, today is the Feast of the Assumption – the day that all Catholics give honor to Mary, the Mother of Jesus.  Today’s blog examines why Mary is important, not just for Catholics, and why we all need a Mother God.

Divine Mother

For 2000+ years, Catholics have lived a truth that all human beings know but might be afraid to admit.  Catholics, in our reverence toward Mary, are living the truth that we all know – We need a Mother God.  Yes, yes, yes, I know that technically Mary is not considered to be God, neither is she counted as equal with God, but in practice, Catholics really do treat Mary as if she were God.  And yes, I know that the whole Mary thing is one of the reasons other denominations have a problem with Catholics, accusing us of worshipping idols (Mary, the saints, etc.), and that the Institution of the Church defends the reverence offered to Mary as differing from the worship we offer to God.  But again, in practice, Mary really is treated as if she were God….or at the very least, a Goddess.  I do not think this is a bad thing.  In fact, I believe that the reverence offered to Mary in Catholic practice is healthy and an intuitive reflection of a much deeper knowing – the knowing that we all need a mother, more specifically, we all need a mother God.

The Death of the Goddess

In Riane Eislers books, The Chalice and the Blade and Sacred Pleasure, she examines the ancient cultures of the Middle East and Mediterranean, specifically the transition from a egalitarian culture to patriarchy.  In this shift from egalitarianism, the co-equal images of the Divine as God and Goddess were violently overtaken by a single, warring God, primarily resulting in a shift from a peaceful and harmonious culture to one that became ruled through fear, power and intimidation. We see evidence of this shift in the Hebrew scriptures as the Goddess is demonized (Eve, the serpent, the fruit, Asherah, feminine practices, etc.) and systematically obliterated to make room for the single male God who is frequently portrayed as vengeful, wrathful and jealous.  As the Goddess was destroyed, so too was the sacred honoring of the feminine as women became lesser citizens, oppressed instead of being honored as co-equal and co-creators with their male companions.  The good news is that while human beings try to make things go their way, God has other plans.  As such, the Goddess has never really been destroyed, she has remained in the back recesses of our consciousness, waiting to be reclaimed so that as a species, we can experience the peace and harmony that naturally results when we honor the sacred in all aspects of the Divine and in all human beings – male and female.

Mary, Our Mother

We intuitively know that God cannot be only male.  But more than this, we LONG for images and experiences of the Divine that reflect our highest natures.  And what could be more reflective of our highest natures than an image of God that is nurturing, caring, loving, tender, kind, ever-present, soft, attentive, affectionate and looks at us through the eyes of adoration as a loving mother would?  I believe it has been the Goddess as a loving mother, hiding in the back recesses of our consciousness, that has ultimately driven Marian devotion.  It is for this reason that I not only accept, but embrace all the muss and fuss that goes with the Catholic tradition of giving honor and reverence to Mary, not only as the mother of Jesus, but as the Mother of us all.  It isn’t a mistake that in the Catholic church, Mary’s official titles include:  Mother of God, Queen of Heaven, Co-Redemptrix, Source of Salvation, Spouse of the Holy Spirit, for even though the Institution would protest, in their heart of hearts, they know we need a mother too!

Some Mary fun:

So, just for fun and maybe to help you in your own reverence to Mary…or whatever name you give to the Goddess within, here are a few of my favorite Mary songs:

Breath of Heaven – Amy Grant

Ave Maria – Bach

Ave Maria – Schubert

God/dess Talking

Today’s blog explores God.  What would God say to us today if we had the ears to hear?  Yes, I am writing this, but read it as if it is God/dess speaking to you.  🙂

Who I AM

My dearest children:

My blessings of love, joy and peace on you this day….and on every other day.  Lauri asked me to speak to you on behalf of MYSELF and for your benefit.  You are living in a time where there is much conflict and so much of that conflict seems to be centered around ME.  Am I man or woman, spirit or light, presence or essence, up or down, inside or outside, on a mountain or in a temple, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Pagan, Hindu, Buddhist, Black, White, Asian, Gay, Straight, Republican or Democrat, etc. etc. etc.  In this moment,  I invite you to imagine ME as a beautiful, gentle, compassionate and wise woman, and in this imagined vision of ME, you may call ME, Sophia, but know that this is only one possibility among an infinite number of possibilities about how you can imagine and experience ME.  So, over this arguement about what I AM and what I AM not….you can stop all your fighting.  Because……I AM all of it…..and even more than that.  You cannot begin to imagine or even experience all that I AM, because I AM infinite.  But, if it helps you to know ME in a particular form: Black or White, male or female, Spirit or Light….then go for it.  It makes no difference to me, except when you fight about it.

PS:  If you need help finding your way home……call Lauri (920) 230-1313 or email or Buy her book: Authentic Freedom – Claiming a Life of Contentment and Joy!

Enough with the fighting

While I AM a tolerant, compassionate and unconditional loving God/dess and in you there is never really anything to forgive, I AM getting a little tired of all this fighting.  But then again, I only have MYSELF to blame since I did create you and in your decision to become human, separation is the lens through which WE will have this experience.  This might be a good time in your history, however, to recognize that separation is a choice and it is a choice that you can undo at any moment.  When you turn away from the separation you have chosen and remember your ONENESS in ME……then all this fighting will end.  Why….because all these things you perceive as different – race, religion, political party, nation, gender, sexual orientation, are really all the same.  In ME, there is no separation….we are all ONE….in a constant state of love, harmony, unity, bliss, peace, joy, awe and wonder.  You make things so difficult with all this separation and like Dorothy and her red shoes, you have always had the power to change this.  And you know, her little mantra, “There’s no place like home….there’s no place like home….” could have the same magical effect on you….to bring you home to ME!  So if you are tired of all this fighting, struggle, challenge, separation, then click your little red heels and COME HOME!

PS:  If you need help finding your way home……call Lauri (920) 230-1313 or email or Buy her book: Authentic Freedom – Claiming a Life of Contentment and Joy!

All I Want to Do and BE

Come home!  I am sitting here waiting for you to come home to remembering your true nature which is LOVE.  And, I want nothing more than to hold you in that love, comfort you from your fears, enfold you in peace and stroke your hair as your highest truth gently rises to the surface.  I made you for joy.  I made you to create.  I envisioned you having fun, playing in fields of daisies and making bubbles through bubble wands.  I created this amazing, beautiful, magical, full of wonder, world for your pleasure.  I want you to skip through the woods in search of magical mushrooms, to dance with the fairies and play hide and seek with the gnomes.  Your world is supposed to be magic.  Instead, you have made it your own personal hell.  STOP Right now!  Click your ruby red heels and COME HOME.  You have the power.  You know how to get here.  And if you forgot, read some more of Lauri’s blogs, she has given you a MILLION tools to help you remember and maps to help you find your way.  I am here….waiting…….and all you have to do is CHOOSE: love instead of fear, harmony instead of separation, peace instead of anxiety, joy instead of sorrow, hope instead of dread, compassion instead of hatred, forgiveness instead of anger.  CHOOSE ME.  CHOOSE ME.  CHOOSE ME……and you will have peace.

Sophia (or whatever name by which you want to call me!)
