I often think one of the biggest obstacle to people getting the spiritual support and guidance they need is the illusion that spiritual teachers are perfect or that we are inhuman (untouchable, unreachable) in some way. As one who has been called a “spiritual teacher” and who has crafted a public presence around this work, I will be the first to tell you that this illusion could not be farther from the truth. If someone presents the illusion of being perfect or acts as if they are, they are lying and not likely who you want as a teacher anyway. Let’s keep it real, shall we!? I am sharing and then inviting some of the other “public” teachers I know to share their own thoughts on who they are and how they spend their time when they are not being “teacher.”
I’m Lauri. Just Lauri. When I’m not working with clients and students (and even … or maybe especially when I am…..) I am excruciatingly REAL! Other than maintaining my commitment to my daily spiritual practice and feeding my own need for spiritual support, I don’t do any of those things lauded by certain “spiritual teachers.”
I don’t worry about thinking the “right” thoughts. First of all, to believe there are right or wrong thoughts is a form of judgment arising out of separation. Thoughts are neutral, it is what we do with them that decides if they are “good” or “bad” FOR US.
I am no longer a vegetarian. I’m not a raw foodie. I’m definitely not vegan. I LOVE MEAT – especially rare, red meat – beef or lamb preferably. I have tried other nutrition philosophies and I have found that my body needs meat to stay healthy…and my veggies need to be cooked. I also don’t fast. Again, I have learned that with my fragile constitution, fasting is BAD….for me. I also take pharmaceuticals. I’ve tried the herbal remedies for anxiety, depression, high blood pressure and reflux….and none of them worked. Zoloft it is!
I curse…..a lot. Some would say, “Like a sailor.” Fuck is my favorite word and I soooo appreciate the Brits for reminding me of the appropriate use of the C-word and other “misogynistic insults.” Whatever! These words are only offensive if we choose to be offended by them. I am offended by very little other than ignorance and stupidity…and even then, that’s my shit, not yours!
When I’m not sprinkling messages of love…..my tendency is to be a self-righteous, judgmental hag with wild raging anger. My friends and family have seen my rage/passion. It usually comes out when I witness injustice! I wonder how people can be so uncaring, ignorant and (on bad days) stupid! Then I get on my soapbox and start ranting….to anyone who will listen. But that’s just me. I can be a self-righteous asshole and I own it. I’m done judging myself for being REAL!
Sometimes my anxiety comes out sideways. Just yesterday I lost it on my daughter for no other reason than I was feeling anxious for some unknown reason (which was revealed later) and couldn’t find a parking spot for a local event (while ranting about our dumb city for not having enough public parking, thereby not really supporting downtown businesses. J )
Now….how do I spend my time you ask? That’s easy. WATCHING NETFLIX! There is nothing better than finding a show I love and immersing myself in its world. Penny Dreadful and Game of Thrones (not yet on Netflix) are two of my favorites…..oh yeah…..and BBC’s Sherlock. I love that “high functioning sociopath!!!”
Same with books. Sadly I haven’t found any good ones lately….I have a specific genre I lean toward, but my current guilty pleasure is anything by Maggie Stiefvater. Raven Boys ROCKS! And it’s not just silly frivolous “teen lit.” Her shit is GOOD!
Music…..the heavier the better. Disturbed, Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson are a few of my favs – mixed in with a little Sarah McLachlan (when I’m feeling melancholy or mournful) and Bach (when I’m feeling sophisticated! 😉 ) And when I’m longing for “home” I crank up the Irish – Clannad, Altan, Mary Black.
Speaking of sophisticated – NOT! You will never find me at the Country Club or a Debutante Ball (WHO DOES THAT!?). I’ll be at the local coffee shop – the artsy one tossing back a dark roast – the darker the better….or the local tavern, savoring a Guinness. I have NO designer clothes, purses, or shoes unless they came from Goodwill. In fact, I cannot remember the last time I bought anything from a department store. Socks and underwear maybe. The only thing I splurge on is bras. Nothing compares to a good bra that fits well and lasts! Thank you Victoria’s Secret!
What else? I have OCD. Only a mild form…..but there are a few things that either oog me out or which I obsess about (like leaving a preposition at the end of a sentence……I will likely lose sleep tonight over that one!). Wet wood (wooden spoons, paper, etc ) totally creeps me out. It makes my skin crawl. I hate dirty kitchens and bathrooms and hair in the sink makes me CRAZY….which is really fun in a household with two long-haired women! There’s more but you get the gist.
I’m a mom. More than anything in the whole wide world, I love my (now adult) children. I love them fiercely! I am their greatest fan – even when (especially when) they are being REALLY REAL. They have their own gifts and challenges and I love them all the more for it – all of it. When my son is being an asshole (usually in the face of injustice) I celebrate it. When my daughter is doing nothing but watching Anime’ I know it is her way of decompressing from this too-loud and too-violent world…and then I join her!
So…..that’s me. Raging self-righteous, judgemental, cursing hag and all. I’m about as real as they get which is ultimately why every single one of my clients and students love working with me. If I’m excruciatingly real……it gives them permission to be the same.
Now, what’s your story?
In no way, shape or form do I profess to have attained enlightenment. In fact, if someone has to tell you they are enlightened, they are not. Those who have reached true enlightenment, like Jesus, have come to know that:
“… though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God as something to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of all human beings, and being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Phil 2: 6-8
Enlightenment is not about escaping the human condition or denying the human experience. Enlightenment is about being fully human and embracing all that it means to be human – death and all. While the path toward enlightenment does include ascending toward and coming to know our true Divine nature, as Jesus came to know and which he demonstrated to his disciples. Enlightenment doesn’t end there. As Jesus demonstrated, once we have come to understand our inherent Union with God…
“The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.” John 17: 22-23
…we then have to bring that Union into our human form and live that union fully. While the journey toward enlightenment begins with ascending, it can only be fulfilled when we allow that Union to descend fully into our human form so it can be lived out in our human experience. In this, we become, like Jesus, fully human and fully divine.
Herein lays the challenge with many of the modern-day interpretations of enlightenment. Instead of honoring the fullness of the human experience, many of the ways in which enlightenment (ascension, 5D consciousness, etc.) is spoken of today, would lead one to believe that enlightenment is all sunshine and roses. It is not. Enlightenment does not mean we have some magical way of avoiding the darkness of the human experience…or that we have to. With true enlightenment, we still experience pain, suffering, sorrow, loss, betrayal, disappointment, and the sharp pain of rejection. When we attain enlightenment, we are not given a “get out of jail free” card. In fact, for many who have attained enlightenment, it seems the human experience is that much more painful. Look at Jesus for example. He was condemned, beaten, and crucified on a cross. Enlightenment didn’t make Jesus’ life easier. If anything, it made it more difficult. HOWEVER….because Jesus had become enlightened – both fully human and fully Divine…..he had the tools within him to face all that life gave him – including his suffering and pain. Jesus didn’t run from, ignore, or try to “la la” the reality of the human experience away….he embraced it….crucifixion and all.

In our journey of ascension, spiritual evolution, enlightenment, self-actualization, personal growth: we come upon a practice that helps us to manage the relationship conflicts in our lives and keep them in the proper perspective. The practice teaches us that every relationship conflict we experience is there as a teacher, revealing to us our own unhealed wounds. With this practice, instead of lashing out at or projecting blame upon the other person in the conflict, we STOP and take a look within: What is being triggered in me relating to an unhealed wound or unacknowledged fear? What can I do to help support the healing and release of this wound/fear? This practices invites us to ask the question, “What is mine in this?” while freeing us from the temptation to harbor resentment, blame, anger or to entertain thoughts of retaliation toward the other person in the conflict – owning what is ours and taking care of our own sh.t. This practice also frees us from the temptation of wanting to “fix” or “correct” the other person in the conflict, recognizing that we are only responsible for our own healing and leaving them to work on themselves (if they choose to do so).
Holding ourselves accountable to our own part in relationship conflict is a profoundly freeing practice. It facilitates our own self-awareness. We experience healing and release of fear and the wounds that are still haunting us. We are able to enter into a place of detachment in our inter-personal communications – freeing ourselves from reaction, blame, projection, resentment, hurt and anger. We are also able to grow in compassion toward the “other.” As we realize our own woundedness we become more sensitive to the unhealed wounds of others, allowing us to have empathy for those who have not yet found healing.
This practice of self-reflection and self-scrutiny is a powerful and important step in our individual journeys toward wholeness and while we should never NOT engage in this practice, there is one grave danger we must be conscious and aware of:
As we engage in the practice of self-scrutiny and self-evaluation in our relationship conflicts, it is easy to fall into patterns of taking all the blame for the conflict and neglecting to hold the other person accountable for their own unhealed wounds and unacknowledged fears. This over-responsibility shows up in subtle patterns of self-blame, shame and sometimes even evolves into self-loathing. To put it simply, we find ourselves always questioning our actions, motivations, roles in relationship challenges and we neglect to REMEMBER that the other person is AT LEAST 50% of the problem. As it is said, “it takes two to tango.” We feel these patterns inwardly as a sense of heaviness, feeling burdened, even depressed or slightly angry or resentful.
When we find ourselves bearing the full burden of blame in any relationship conflict, it is time to TAKE OUR POWER BACK! Yes, it is important to enter into self-evaluation, acknowledging our part in a relationship conflict, but it doesn’t end there. It is critical that we also acknowledge (to the best of our ability), the other person’s role in the conflict. We might even know them well enough to surmise the unhealed wound or unacknowledged fear that caused their part of the conflict. Whether we are able to do this or not….it is IMPERITIVE to keep the responsibility where it truly lies – and at least 50% of that burden lies on the shoulder of “the other,” and that is where it should remain. In taking back our power, we acknowledge what is ours and do the work of cleaning that up, and we leave the rest for the other person to deal with. Whether they deal with it or not is none of our business as the only person we are truly responsible for is ourselves – and that is work enough on its own!
For the past 13 years, ascension folks have focused their attention on talk of the 5D world – moving beyond the world of duality (3D) to unity consciousness (5D). Another word for this journey is enlightenment. What I am coming to understand is that we don’t stop here (in 5D). Instead, there are worlds beyond 5D and as more and more of us are finding our footing in the world of unity consciousness (oneness), the 6D world is making itself known. The 6D world, I have discovered, is all about magic!
It has been revealed to me that one of my tasks in the coming year is to tune into the 6D world and share with you what can be learned there. In short, when we access the 6D world, we are able to be channels through which Divine Will is made manifest in the world through us. In other words, 6D allows us to access God’s highest vision of love and allows us to make it real in our own lives and help support the manifestation of LOVE on the physical plane. In the coming weeks, I will be sharing with you what I am learning about the 6D world and how we are being invited to use magic to create the world anew. PS This is the for the mystics and superheroes out there too!
Understanding 5D – aka Unity Consciousness
Moving from the 3D world (duality) into the world of unity consciousness, we come to understand that we are all one. We transcend the ego-based dualistic mindset and remember our original nature as one within ourselves, one with each other, one with all of creation and ONE with the God (by whatever name you call Source) who made us (or rather, the God who is expressing God’s self through us). When we truly know this Oneness (note, this is NOT an intellectual knowledge, but a lived experience of Oneness), we realize that it is all God. God is in the sunset. God is in the rainstorm. Our neighbor is God expressing God’s self. God is in the man on death row awaiting his execution. God is in our dreams. God is in our struggles. God is in us. Everything is made up of and is an expression of God. When we realize this truth through 5D consciousness, we treat everything as holy and sacred and afford it dignity, honor and respect. In short – we treat everything, including ourselves, with love.
6D – Magic and Making Dreams Come True
Once we realize that everything is God, then magic becomes not only possible, but real. Magic, from this perspective is not about casting a spell, lighting a candle or jumping a broom (though there is always a place for and a value in ritual). Magic is not about manipulating the elements to get what we want. Instead, magic in 6D is about tuning into Divine guidance through our creative imaginations (more on this later) and asking for direction on bringing into form that which is in our highest good. For example, we might ask, “What steps can I take to secure financial prosperity for myself and my family?” We then allow the Divine to provide the answers(which will most likely be provided in symbols like in a dream), trusting the answer is for our highest good, and then we do what we are told.
Stay tuned in the coming weeks for more on the Sixth Dimension and using magic to assist the Divine in manifesting the world of love.
Perfectionist and the quest for enlightenment
As a recovering perfectionist, the quest for “enlightenment” (ahem….perfection) has been high on my list of desired accomplishments. I’m nowhere near attaining that goal, but it is still on my wish list. Enlightened people are perfect you see….calm, cool, responsible, unflappable. Enlightened people have a high set of standards and they live by them. Enlightened people are kind, thoughtful, forgiving, loving, generous, humble and patient. All this is true of enlightened people…….except when they are grieving. Here is how I learned this important truth.
God is funny…..or, as my daughter says, “He just thinks he is.” Just days before my aunt was rushed to the hospital and eventually gave in to the complications of COPD, I had embraced a forgiveness practice. With a combination of the Ho’oponopono prayer and my own method of “praying for and loving my enemies,” I was intentionally searching my consciousness for people toward whom I was still harboring resentment for past hurts, and surrounding other people who annoyed me or tempted my ire with love. I was doing a pretty good job maintaining my practice and I was feeling really good about the love it seemed I was cultivating. Then my aunt died and all hell broke loose. Pretty soon I was ranting and raving over past hurts and casting dispersions toward anyone who ticked me off. I found myself frequently rattling off the curse I have in the past saved for only the worst of the worst….”f….those f’ing…..f’ers.” (Yes….those on the quest for enlightenment use the F-word.) 🙂
Permission to be human
As I’ve been witnessing my own regression, there were a few moments in which I was tempted to judge my behavior as bad, corrupt, imperfect and punish myself through self-condemnation and self- loathing. Instead, I decided that when we are grieving, we all get a “Get out of jail free” card. When grieving, we are allowed to be as human as we need to be to process the grief. If in the midst of grieving the loss of my aunt I need to hate a few people, then so be it. If I need to go on a rant about everything or nothing in particular, that is ok. If I need to crawl into a ball on the floor and suck my thumb or pull out a full-on 2-year old temper tantrum, then more power to me. And…..more power to you when you need to do the same. When we are grieving, we don’t need to be enlightened, or perfect, or patient, or pleasant, or accommodating, or anything we don’t want to be. When we are grieving, we have permission to be human…..to be vulnerable, afraid, anxious, worried, sorrowful, hurting, damaged, wounded, depressed, angry, hateful, etc. etc. etc. And….thank God/dess, because when we are busy trying to be perfect, it is awful hard for us to receive the help, and love, and support of those who are here to comfort us in our grief. If it were not for our humanness, we would not be able to receive the loving care of another human being which is one of the primary needs in our process of healing. And those who want to help us heal would not be able to share their gift of loving compassion. When grieving, perfection and enlightenment can wait, we have grieving to do so that we can find healing and the new life on the other side of the loss. When we have found a little healing, then we can return to the quest for perfection…or enlightenment…or ascension…..or whatever you want to call it…..or we can just go on being human.
“Whether we are changing the world or we are changing ourselves, the effect is the same – we are living in a new world.”
Superhero Report from Monday, August 11, 2014
Since time began, or at least since either climate change or barbaric hoards came and destroyed the harmony that human beings had once known (see Riane Eisler’s books, Sacred Pleasure and Chalice and the Blade for more on these theories), we have been yearning for another kind of world. Whether communicated through hippie tie-dye dreams of peaceful revolution or apocalyptic foretellings of the rapture and the promise of the “kingdom to come,” we have looked for something other than the fear and conflict that often defines the human condition. This generation’s talk on enlightenment and ascension is no different.
. . . or is it? Ultimately, that decision is up to you. Because, in a sense, we create our own reality (more on that in a bit), so we get to decide….do we want to remain in the world as it is, or live in a way that supports a more peaceful and harmonious world? And, is there something to the increasing numbers of people speaking for and working toward making the world a better place? Or is this as it always has been and we just have more access to these conversations because of the internet? Again…the answer to this question is up to you.
As one who is not interested in creating or supporting anything as doctrine, I will not tell you what to believe, but instead, will invite you to discern for yourself. There are a million and one resources out there for exploring the ascension, enlightenment, world changes, third dimension/fifth dimension transition, the shift, etc. etc. etc. Simply type one of these terms into Google and you will find a million possible answers. At the end of this post, I will share with you the resources that I turn to for support in this discernment, but again, don’t take any of this as doctrine, instead, please discern for yourself. In the meantime, it is important to understand that:
“Whether we are changing the world or we are changing ourselves, the effect is the same – we are living in a new world.”
And this is exactly what it boils down to. If we are in a stage of our human evolution which is facilitating dramatic and peaceful change in our world…..yay! If, on the other hand, it is more about our own inner transformation, then that is ok too. This is the part about creating our own reality, because ultimately, creating a peaceful and harmonious world, starts with ourselves. When we do the inner work of cultivating peace, compassion and harmony within ourselves, it can’t help but trickle out into our lives and ultimately, out into the world. When we take care of the world that resides within us, it is reflected in the world around us. When we become peaceful, compassionate and joyful, the world becomes peaceful, compassionate and joyful – even when we are surrounded by hatred and fear. When we know the love that we are and enjoy the peace of that knowing, the events of the outside world have no negative impact on us….and maybe this is what some of the New Age “Ascension” folks are talking about when they refer to the 5-D, fifth dimension world:
Harmony and understanding
Sympathy and trust abounding
No more falsehoods or derision
Golden living dreams of vision
Mystic crystal revelations
And the minds true liberation…
Ultimately, it is up to you. If you are looking for a peaceful, more loving world, enter the SHIFT within yourself and see what happens. In the meantime, here are a few resources I have found helpful:

For many adults, midlife, perimenopause and menopause put everything into question. We question our vocations, our place in the world, our relationships, our family of origin, our past, our present and our future. It is also during midlife that many question their beliefs – who or what do we believe in and why? Today, I share with you an essay I wrote during one of those times of questioning. This essay came out of a period of study in which I was deep in the midst of Indian and Buddhist philosophy, and quite frankly, tired of being told that the path to enlightenment was to sit down, shut up, quiet the mind and silence my passions.
Another Existential Crisis
I don’t know about you, but trying to attain enlightenment or striving for some sort of spiritual perfection only leaves me feeling anxious and assured of failure. After beating my head bloody against the enlightenment door, I threw my hands up in surrender, sat down hard on my ass, with the cold steel door of enlightenment against my back, and quit. In surrendering, in quitting, in ceasing to strive after enlightenment, I finally found peace. Liberation came to me on that day when I realized that I am already Divine and that the reason I am here, the whole point of the human experience is just this – TO BE HUMAN!
So, if I’m here to be human (and maybe you are also here for this reason), why should I deny my passions, set aside my desires, sit down, shut up, quiet my mind? Why do I have to be perfect, sinless, emotionless, bulletproof, impervious to pain? Instead, why not harness the creative energy God gave me? Why not give voice to the words God wants the world to hear through me? Why not dance, scream, shout out my anger, rage, wrath, sorrow, pain, despair, worry, depression, anxiety, panic and fear? Why not poke the sleeping giant and set fire to a sleeping world?
God is the only God there is….why do we think we have to be him/her/it? Can’t we just be the human beings God/dess made us to be and be happy with that????? And where is the theology that allows us to be human? Frankly, all I see in the world religions is a whole lot of teachers telling us we have to learn to be like God. I’m all for practices that help us to find inner peace, to cultivate empathy and compassion and which empower us to work for the betterment of the world. And, if we came from God and are going back to God, aren’t we here to be something other than God? And if we are here to be something other than God, then perhaps there is a place for our anger, impatience, passion, desire, lust, restlessness, etc. etc. etc. So that being said…….
Where is the theology that doesn’t reject the way God/dess made us – unique expressions of the ever-living and ever-creating God, seeking to be known in the world? Where is the theology that doesn’t ask us to deny, repress, suppress or transcend all of what makes us human? Where is the theology that acknowledges that creation and growth come out of chaos, tension and pain? Where is the theology that gives honor to the pains of birth instead of condemning them as a curse or as punishment for some mythological ancestor’s sin? Where is the theology that honors as sacred the fecund, fetid, putrid, bloody, oozing condition of the human experience? Where is the theology that sees passion and desire as God’s longing to be known and to be made known? Where is the theology that allows us to be human in all the ways God wishes to experience the gift of being human? Where is the theology that doesn’t expect us to be God or that doesn’t set the drive for enlightenment as the supreme and ultimate task of our existence? Where is the theology that acknowledges all that is good and holy and sacred in the human condition? Where is the theology that recognizes that our origin is divinity and that we are here to simply be human?

Once we step onto the path of awakening, enlightenment, spiritual growth, consciousness, self-awareness (or whatever you want to call it), we are forever changed. And, it is not a journey for the faint of heart!
Who will endure the day of his coming?
Who can stand when he appears?
For he is like the refiner’s fire,
or like the fuller’s lye.
He will sit refining and purifying silver,
And he will purify the sons of Levi,
Refining them like gold or like silver…
Malachi 3: 3-4a
Defining the “God Path”
Some people call it the path of enlightenment, others awakening, others being saved, others consciousness, others self-awareness. I call it the God Path. When we heed the restlessness and longing in our soul and begin the search for its remedy, we are on the God Path. For most, the search for the remedy to this inner restlessness, longing and impatience begins outside … looking for the perfect job, partner, house, STUFF, that will quell this longing. Eventually, we find that the external search produces NOTHING or worse, more longing and restlessness. At some point, some give up and surrender to a life of quiet desperation. The courageous, however, continue the search which eventually leads them WITHIN…to the only place where that longing might be satisfied. I call this the God Path because it is God (consciousness, higher self, highest truth, Presence, Being) that we find within. And it is God who is the source of our longing…..calling us HOME.
The God Path Requires ENDURANCE
As the prophet Malachi observed, the God Path is not for the faint of heart and requires a tremendous amount of endurance. Endurance is required because on the God Path, every fear, ego-attachment, false perception reveals itself and asks for our attention so that it can be healed, transcended and released. If money is one of our attachments, it will show up. If we cling to power, status or fame, it will be IN OUR FACE. If we do not believe we are worthy of love, our unworthiness will show up again and again and again until we remember that we are already LOVE, that love does not have to be earned, neither does it have to be taken away. If we have forgotten that we are uniquely gifted to reveal God in the world and if we have withheld these gifts from the world, we will be confronted by anxiety, depression, rage. If we have harbored resentment toward another, forgiveness will elude us. Again and again and again our fears and attachments will show themselves so that we can face them and do the work of moving through them so that we can be the WHOLE person God created us to be.
Help Along the Path
Authentic Freedom – Claiming a Life of Contentment and Joy provides tools to help you along the God Path. It does so by illuminating the seven core fears that you will face along the path and presenting tools to help you heal and transcend these fears. Through Authetic Freedom, we discover that forewarned is forearmed and we enter into the God Path armed with the resources we need to confront the fears, ego attachments and false perceptions as they present themselves to us. Authentic Freedom presents the same tools used by our greatest spiritual teachers in their own journey along the God Path – Jesus, Moses, The Buddha, Krishna, Mohammed and others.
Because the God Path requires endurance and will test us like gold tested in fire, it is helpful to have a personal guide along the path. This personal guidance is the role of a Spiritual Director. It is a Spiritual Director’s job to be a source of support for us along the path, to provide encouragement and also an objective presence to help us to see those things that may be lurking in the darkness – our unresolved ego attachments, the way we project our fears and attachments on to others, our resistance to the path that God may be laying out for us. It is the responsibility of a Spiritual Director to help us hear the truth beyond our words and to see the light that is shining where we might see only darkness. The role of a Spiritual Director is at once listener, coach and spiritual butt-kicker.
Rewarded for our Endurance
While the journey is not easy, the rewards are terrific. For those who choose the God path and stick with it, there is fulfillment, contentment, love, joy and peace and the ability to endure the ups and downs of the human condition without being destroyed. The God path provides for us the tools to transcend the fears, false perceptions and suffering of the human condition and to find the peace that resides in the midst of it all. In choosing the God path, we find that heaven, nirvana, the kingdom of God is RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW and not on some planet light years away.
