Unraveling from Outside Perceived Authority

When they (the temple police) had brought them, they had them stand before the (religious) council. The high priest questioned them, saying, “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this (Jesus’) name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and you are determined to bring this man’s blood on us.” But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than any human authority.”

Acts 5: 27-29

BOOM! In one sentence, the apostles make it clear who it is we are truly called to “obey.” We are not called to obey human authority – only God.  But here is where it gets dodgy. Whose God and whose interpretation of God are we to obey?  That answer is also clear, but we have to dig a little to find it.

Let’s go back to Jesus. In Jesus’ world, there were two authorities – the Romans who created and enforced the civil laws and the authorities in the temple who created and enforced the religious law.  There was also a third “authority” – that which arose out of Jesus’ cultural conditioning – things like prejudice against women, people of other beliefs, homosexuality, etc.   Jesus, however, obeyed none of these. As his ministry expanded (or rather, his understanding of his ministry) he obeyed them even less (see MT 15: 21-28 for an example of this). Even as a child, Jesus displayed a tendency toward obedience only to God:

Now every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival. When the festival was ended and they started to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. Assuming that he was in the group of travelers, they went a day’s journey. Then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, “Child, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety.” He said to them, “Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s business? But they did not understand what he said to them.   Luke 2: 41-50

Paul spoke of Jesus’ obedience in this way:

Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,

who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
as something to be exploited,
but emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form,
he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death—
even death on a cross.

Phil 2: 5-8

Jesus obeyed God….period. And we are invited to do the same.  Yet we live in a culture that tells us otherwise.  Instead, we are taught from a very early age, all of the outside authorities we are meant to obey – our parents, our teachers, our peer group, our priest, our religion, our boss, the rules of the corporation for whom we work (written and unwritten), the laws of our community, state and nation, and the worst of all of them – advertising!  Many of those who are placed in positions of outside authority are good people with our best interests in mind.  Some are using their power to manipulate and control others for their own selfish gain. Some rules made by these outside authorities no longer make sense in an evolving world.  Some still make sense, but maybe no longer within the context in which they were formed.

But when we have been conditioned to look outside of ourselves for guidance and direction, how are we to know what is God speaking to us and what is the outside perceived authority? Again, Paul provides a clue:

Beware of the Witch Collectors!

This one is for my sister-witches (and brothers – for what I will say of my sister witches, is also true for my brother witches). When I use the term “witch” I’m referring to all the powerful women I know who have harnessed the infinite power within themselves and who are using this power to support their own life mission of being in service to the betterment of our world.  These are women who are strong, independent, confident (albeit sometimes insecure – only because they have rarely been supported or affirmed in their gifts), intuitive, empathic, teachers, healers, leaders and behind the scene witches.  These are the women who have been with us throughout eternity and who have been ridiculed, condemned, even killed for their magical gifts.  Fortunately we are no longer in the “burning times” but that doesn’t mean that today’s witches are free from danger.  In fact, the dangers we face today are even more subtle and insidious than the dangers we faced during the witch trials and the inquisition.  Today I wish to speak of one specific danger that faces all women of power today – and that is of what I like to call the “Witch Collectors.”

women and magic, witches, witchcraft, order of melchizedek, christian magic,

Witch Collectors can come in any gender, but I have most often encountered them in men. These are men (or women) who appear powerful, confident, strong, self-assured; perhaps even a bit arrogant.  They are often physically attractive and lure people in with their charm.  At first they seem sincere, trustworthy and of integrity, but it is all a ruse.  What they show to the world is an illusion for what hides behind the mask is a succubus – one who is not strong at all, but terribly insecure and lacking in inner power.

Motivated by a deep sense of emptiness and vacancy, Witch Collectors are compelled to seek out and then draw in those of power (especially witches) so they can suck them dry. In the world of psychology, these people are often called narcissists, but in my experience, their “condition” moves far beyond that of a borderline personality disorder. Unlike narcissists, Witch Collectors desire more than power and control.  Witch Collectors literally feed on the life-force energy of the powerful woman (or man) they have drawn into their clutches, thereby draining them of their power, falsely believing that as they drain the witch of her power, his own power is increasing.  The problem with this “relationship” is that the Witch Collector is never satisfied – can never be satisfied – as there is no amount of “witch power” that can fill a vacant hole.  They may feel temporary satisfaction from the energy they have drained, but the emptiness within a Witch Collector is like a black hole – infinitely empty and impossible to fill.  As long as the relationship continues between witch collector and witch, the witch collector will feed and the witch will feel drained –unable to harness the fullness of her power and to use that power for good.

Identifying a witch collector is tricky business, especially if you are a woman who is still nursing the wounds of the unholy masculine. In a culture which has been ruled for the past 5000 years by the unholy masculine (fear, power and control), most of us harbor this wound.  As a result, we long to be seen, heard, acknowledged and supported in the use of our gifts.  When we find the rare (in this case) man who celebrates our gifts – who speaks our language – we are thrilled.  Titillated actually!  In our excitement, we are tempted to set aside our shield of caution and discernment gets tossed to the wind.  We enthusiastically enter into the web, blind to the true motivation of their seduction.  This is how seduction works, speaking to our insecurities, fears and unhealed wounds, which then causes us to put down our guard.  Then the “witch hunter” moves in for the “kill.”  Or rather – the slow kill…..as that is how Witch Collectors work – slowly and subtly draining us of our life force energy – often the point where we find ourselves clinically depressed and unable to function.

But there is hope dear sisters for today I am calling them out! I am calling out all witch collectors and in doing so, giving you permission to recognize the witch collectors who have crossed your path or who may, in fact, still be part of your life.  See them for who and what they are – parasites intent on draining you of your magical powers.  The great news is that once you are able to identify the “demon” it no longer has power over you!  Say NO to their seductions and their ministrations.  STOP being the host for their insatiable desire for power.  Remember that in truth, they HAVE NO POWER.  You are the one with the power and it is your power they seek to possess.  See them.  Say no to them.  Cut them off from their food-source.  And then watch them slink away.  This is what I have found in my own experience with witch collectors – once they know they are being seen for who they truly are, once we refuse to let them take our power, once we say NO to their seductions, they simply slink away and go off in search of their next victim.  Buh Bye….and good riddance!

Being a Catalyst

The Plight of the Sh.t-Disturber

I recently posted an article To See or Not to See – That is the Question, exploring the gift of spiritual sight.  There is one challenge with this gift I neglected to mention:

The ability to see all the way to people’s (and organizations’) truest and most authentic selves and the potential that lay within them for a meaningful, purposeful and fulfilling life.

I see who they are meant to be behind all the masks they show to the world along who they came into this world to be behind all the unhealed wounds and unacknowledged fears that keep them imprisoned in an unfulfilling, unrewarding life.

Along with this ability, is the very real experience that happens when I see someone in this way – they begin to wake up. The very fact that I can see them….really see them, stirs something within them that knows they are not living as their most authentic self, that they are not being who they came into this world to be.  Call it guilt, or shame, or a feeling we don’t yet have a word for – something stirs in them – a kind of discomfort that they somehow recognize came from me, through me or because of me.  Some people are excited to feel this experience of awakening and are glad for being seen so they can begin to acknowledge and unleash their true selves.  Others – not so much.  Not everyone wants to be seen and certainly not everyone wants to do the REALLY HARD work of becoming their true selves.  For the former, I am a welcome source of support.  For the latter, I often become the enemy.

I will wholeheartedly admit that the latter experience has been a source of pain for me. This has been especially true in close relationships as well as in EVERY SINGLE work or academic institution I have been connected with.  I show up and sh.t starts happening.  The lies, the falsehoods, deceptions, misguided motivations, compulsions and attachments all begin to show themselves.  While this is happening, I’m being shown all the resources of support that would benefit their healing and the realization of their truest most authentic self.  I suggest these supports which are either met with blank stares and deaf ears or outright condemnation and rejection.  At this point, the relationship is now in question and I am either forced to leave or I decide to leave on my own.  It is difficult, if not impossible, to remain in a place where our gifts are not welcome.  At this point all I can do is sit and watch as the house of cards they have built for and around themselves comes tumbling down.

The opposite, however, is true of those who are excited and grateful to be seen and who want to pursue a purposeful and fulfilling life reflective of their own unique gifts and passions. These are the people and institutions in whom my gifts find their fulfillment, resulting in a co-creative dynamic of receptivity and openness where they are liberated from the inner wounds and fears which might otherwise keep them from living as their most authentic selves.  It is a beautiful thing to behold and it is because of these people that I continue to do what I do in spite of those who want to hate me for my gifts.  (PS  They don’t really hate me, they hate themselves for refusing their own truth.)

Lessons from Men

At this place in our conscious evolution, (ascension, self-actualization) one of our critical tasks is to set down what has been “unholy” and unbalanced within us, specifically, the unholy masculine (fear, power and control) and the unholy feminine (victimhood, weakness, helplessness, co-dependency). As we relinquish the unholy, the holy aspects of ourselves have an opportunity to emerge from within and take root in us. For women, perhaps the most challenging part of this journey is discovering the holy masculine within us (and not confusing it with the unholy masculine) and allowing it to be lived through us.  In this, we can take some lessons from (healthy) men:

businessmen-pixabay152572_640

In women, the embodiment of the Divine Masculine is about understanding our worth.

It is about standing up for ourselves and not only insisting, but expecting, even assuming that our needs will be met.

It is about knowing that the work we do in the world has value and expecting, insisting on appropriate compensation for our contribution to the world – whether it be as wife, mother, employer, employee, artist or business owner.

Embodying the Divine Masculine is about having our own backs – setting boundaries where appropriate, naming and claiming our needs, making sure they are getting met and NEVER having to apologize for doing what is right for ourselves.

Embodying the Divine Masculine is about NEVER having to make accommodations that our male brethren would never think of making for another – so much so that others would never even think to ask.

Embodying the Divine Masculine is about never questioning the fact that our needs come first and never even thinking to ask – we simply do it.

Embodying the Divine Masculine is about loving ourselves – knowing our greatness and never settling for less than what we deserve.

What is Magdalene Priestess Training?

Mary, The Magdalene is the only one identified to have completed the full course of Jesus’ teachings (“healed of seven demons”) and was initiated as co-equal partner and Beloved with Christ. It was to The Magdalene whom Jesus first revealed his resurrected/Christed Self and it was The Magdalene he commissioned to share the good news with the other disciples and to continue his work in his stead. As “The Magdalene” and designated “Apostle to the Apostles,” Mary was “the great tower,” shining the light of truth in a world separated by fear.

Mary-magdaleneApostletoApostles

The Order of the Magdalene continues this work in The Magdalene’s name so as to awaken the world to the truth of Mary’s role in Jesus’ ministry and life, and the higher truth of Jesus’ mission of LOVE which Mary alone understood, thereby restoring 2000 years of defamation at the hands of a patriarchal, hierarchical Church, further undoing the harm done to women specifically and the feminine in general. In restoring the Holy Feminine to the Jesus story, we also create the space in which the Holy Masculine can reclaim its place in our world, thereby supporting the world in the returning to its original nature in unity, harmony, peace and love.

Being a priestess of the Magdalene is about spreading the message of Mary’s true role in Jesus’ life and in the continuation of his work, but more importantly, it is about restoring the world to its original nature as LOVE.  As was true of Jesus’ disciples, priestesses of the Magdalene fulfill this mission in their own unique way, relevant to their own unique giftedness and the way they are called to share these gifts in the world in service to LOVE.  The ways in which current Magdalene priestesses are living out their call includes:

  • Counselors and Therapists
  • Holistic Healthcare providers
  • Artists
  • Writers
  • Wives and Mothers/Husbands and Fathers
  • Teachers
  • Professors
  • Philanthropists
  • Public Speakers
  • Shamanic Practitioners
  • Ordained Ministers and Officiants
  • Spiritual Directors
  • Massage Therapists
  • Hands-on Healers/Reiki/Acupressure/Healing Touch Therapy
  • Yoga Teachers
  • Meditation Teachers
  • Medical Doctors
  • Business Owners

Outer change begins with inner change.

Inner change begins with self-knowledge.

Self- Knowledge leads to self-actualization.

Self-actualized individuals, are inherently non-violent, cooperative and collaborative, and are naturally motivated to use their unique gifts in service to the betterment of the world.

  • Western, Eastern and Indigenous Mindfulness, Contemplation and Journey practices
  • The Spiritual Exercises and Rules of Discernment of St. Ignatius
  • Creativity Practices

  • The humanistic theories and creativity practices of Carl and Natalie Rogers
  • The stages of spiritual development of James Fowler and John Westerhoff
  • Bill Plotkin’s development of the human Soul

jesus

From Western Spirituality, The Magdalene Priestess Training has its roots in the original teachings of Jesus* which Mary, called Magdalene fully understood and which were then formalized into the meditation, contemplation and service practices of Western Monasticism, specifically those favored in Benedictine, Franciscan, and Ignatian spirituality.

*The original teachings of Jesus are those rooted in the universal (and non-religious) call of love:

  • love of The Divine (the God/dess of your own understanding)
  • love of Self
  • love of Neighbor – recognizing that all of humanity is our neighbor

and then:

  • lived out through acts of compassion
  • working for justice

The Other One Percent

In the current economic and political climate, we hear a lot about the 1% – those who hold the gold and who are manipulating decisions to benefit themselves, and not the 99% they are here to serve.  I was reminded today that there is another 1% and that this is to whom I belong and who I am here to serve and empower.

otheronepercentmeme

The “Other” One Percent

  • Were born with a deep sense that they are here for a reason, specifically, that they are here to change the world in an incredibly positive way.
  • Are visionaries who are creatively driven with actively intelligent minds.
  • Independent, free-thinkers, driven to use the gifts they were given to reason, discern and exercise their truth.
  • Courageous and willing to take risks and make sacrifices for the sake of serving the betterment of the world.
  • May be sensitive to their environment, picking up the feelings and emotions of others, and the pressure of a world in pain who feel called to be a source of healing and bringing relief to this pressure.
  • Sometimes struggle with anxiety, depression, panic   attack, sleeplessness, insomnia – symptoms that are calling them to be a positive force for change.

This other 1% are those who embody “the power of one” – a seemingly small member supporting vast and expansive positive change – change that benefits not only themselves but the 99% they are called to serve.

If you are part of that 1%, I am here to support you.  To learn more, click HERE.

And….welcome to “the other 1%”.

The Greatest Christmas Gift Ever!

Behold, this is a time of great promise being fulfilled. The journey is over and done. The great task for which we have been set on this plane is accomplished. Our mission complete. We have doggedly pursued the vision/mission/call of our Souls and in many ways, we have died for the sake of this mission – died to our false selves, died to our ego, died to illusion, fear, hatred, ignorance and most importantly: separation. We have faced criticism, condemnation, ridicule and rejection. We have walked through valleys of burning coal and stood toe to toe with SATAN (the inner adversary) himself. In spite of our fears, in spite of the loves we had to leave behind, in spite of the excruciating emotional, mental and physical pain we have endured…..we are still here, breathing and alive as we now stand victorious for all that we have endured, with nothing but faith and some sort of blind hope that all would not be in vain.

Mary Magdalene by Catherine E. Case
Mary Magdalene by Catherine E. Case

With every fiber of my being, I feel the truth of this message. I see the seeds I/we have planted, having already taken root, now beginning to bear fruit. I feel the expanse of love that has taken over our world in spite of the fear and hatred that tries to dampen its cause. I see the faces of people CHANGING. No longer set fast by fear or arms crossed in separation, but looking on in wonder, asking the question, “Could there really be something more than this? Could life be softer, gentler, kinder, more loving? Could people turn to one another in wonder and awe, seeking to understand and honor our differences while honoring our common desire to be safe, and to feel loved?” I see it. I feel it. I know it. And it is because of our effort, because of our willingness to hold fast to the call of love, that this transformation has taking place and will continue to unfold. As I read this morning’s gospel, these words from Zechariah, I knew that what I was sending was true….and I knew it by the ocean of tears I shed in receiving these words – tears not of grief, but of celebration and relief. My Christmas gift to you is that you receive these words for yourself (translating them to fit your own personal beliefs please!) Merry Christmas and thank you for being part of the greatest Christmas present EVER!

“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; for he has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty Savior, born of the house of his servant David. Through his prophets he promised of old that he would save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us. He promised to show mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hand of our enemies, free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, to give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

The Book of She – Book Review

I am please to share an excerpt from the recently released, The Book of She – Your Heroine’s Journey into the Heart of Feminine Power, by Sara Avant Stover.  I was most excited to discover in Sara a fellow “Magdalene,” one called upon and visited by the Magdalene to help restore the Divine Feminine (and by association, the Divine Masculine), in our world.  I found Sara’s book to be a terrific primer on the journey of transformation and empowerment available to those women who are courageous enough to accept the Soul’s bold invitation to wholeness.  Thank you Sara for your contribution to the conversation.

Mary Magdalene

An Excerpt from The Book of SHE by Sara Avant Stover

When a new infusion of love is needed, Mary Magdalene shows up. Our only real choice is whether or not to cooperate.

— Cynthia Bourgeault, The Meaning of Mary Magdalene

Santa Fe, New Mexico; October 30, 2010

Devil’s Night, some call it.

I drew the thick maroon curtains shut and opened one of the windows just a crack to let the night air in. Click. I switched the lamp off and pulled the covers up over my shoulders. Alone in the inn’s musty guestroom.

It was the night before I was scheduled to perform the talk that I’d spent the previous four days preparing, the one I’d later give on my book tour. The next morning I’d stand, without notes or podium, before my circle of six female peers and my public speaking instructor. Just me, my story, and my heart. My body trembled, but my heart roared, “I’m ready.” I could feel the fertility of something new beginning.

Shhhh. What’s that?

I heard a rustling outside. And although I had never heard that sound before, I knew exactly what it was.

Nah, couldn’t be.

A floor-length dress, swishing through the dark, against the cold stone patio outside. Red, I knew it to be, without even having seen it.

It sounded like a ghost or a vision coming to deliver a message, although I had never received such a message.

I rolled over to face the window. No fear, just relaxed readiness, as if waiting to begin a previously agreed-upon appointment.

I watched Her dark shadow outside the window, moving the curtains aside, lifting Her skirt carefully, and suddenly standing next to my bed. Then She climbed in bed and lay down beside me.

She smelled dusty, like She’d come from far away. And although I had never seen Her before, or even thought much of Her, I relaxed in Her presence. I only felt relief that we were together once again. At last.

She didn’t introduce Herself, but I knew in the moment right before I heard Her coming who She was.

She stroked my hair, cooing to me, like I had always wished my mother had done.

“Sara, my love,” she whispered, lips close to my ear, “I am here for you now, and always. You have nothing to worry about. You are my daughter. You are here to do my work in the world. Because of this, I will always take care of you. I will never be far away. I am always here with you.”

We continued breathing, nose to nose, my breath warm and human, Hers ethereal and cool, like that late autumn night’s breeze.

I nodded, cherishing every moment.

Yes. Yes. Thank you so much. This is right.

I rolled over, and She snuggled in behind me, wrapping Her arms around my waist. My body began to shake and sob, releasing a longing that was suddenly, unexpectedly, miraculously filled.

In our embrace, I drifted off to sleep.

And in the morning, although Mary Magdalene was physically gone, I still felt Her presence in my depths.

I felt different. Her visit planted a passion in my heart. I had no idea where it would end up leading me, but I knew that from that day on, my life would never be the same.

Not Church

It seems the final piece of an ever-evolving puzzle has found its way into place. Starting Sunday, August 16, 2015, I will be adding a Sunday service to the offerings of Authentic Freedom Academy. This addition came about through no effort of my own. Instead, it literally fell into my lap. In truth, I had given up on the idea of a Sunday Service of sorts as I have tried this over and over and over again in many different forms and all had come to a screeching halt. In actuality, I had given up on the idea. So when the invitation came through the words of my yoga teacher/friend, I was shocked and surprised…..AND….it was the easiest yes I’ve ever said in my life….which is why I know the invitation, while offered through the person of my yoga teacher, actually came from God.

This is the piece of my Soul’s purpose that was missing (there’s one more piece that is missing…I’ll save that for another day). Funny thing is I didn’t even know it was missing. Sr. Shawn knew though when she offered me the following words when I met with her to discuss my call to priesthood, “Lauri, don’t neglect the part about priestly vocation that involves public worship.” “Yeah right,” I thought. “I won’t be doing that. Been there. Done that. Failed at that. No need to step into that hot mess again.” HMMMMM…..it seems Shawn knew something I did not know. Public….something or other…..is part of the puzzle….and it’s an important part.

StMarysinterior

BUT…..IT’S NOT CHURCH – at least not in the way that Church has been experienced for the majority of the past 2000 years. Church, as most Westerners have experienced it, has been about an outside perceived authority (usually a man) claiming to be earth’s representation of Christ, telling people they have been rejected by God and then telling them all the things they have to do to earn back God’s approval so that if they are lucky, they might be allowed into heaven after they die. If they fail to earn God’s approval (by not following the rules set forth by the Church), then they will be doomed to an eternity in hell.

Um….yeah…..Authentic Freedom Academy, including our Sunday Services is nothing like that. Instead, we leave authority where authority lies – in your own intimate connection with the Divine Source within. Our job then, is to give you tools for nurturing and cultivating that relationship with your own inner Source of truth, guidance, peace, compassion, forgiveness, etc. along with tools for distinguishing the voice of truth (aka God, the Heart) from the voice of the mind (aka ego, adversary, etc.). And then, we provide the support and encouragement you need to heed the voice of truth and then live out that truth for the sake of your own fulfillment and sense of purpose in the world…..ultimately in service to the betterment of the world.

sunlight-315917_1280

Authentic Freedom Academy, including our Sunday service is ultimately about empowerment – empowering you to be the fullest expression of your Fully Divine and Fully Human self that is possible. Our goal is to support you in the journey of your own self-actualization where you are free to experience a life of meaning and purpose that provides you witl the inner contentment that comes with a fulfilling life experience. We accomplish this through various means:

  • One-on-One mentoring (Spiritual Direction)
  • Hand-on-healing
  • Classes
  • Writing and Publishing

And now……

  • Sunday Service

Whereas the former offerings emphasize education and empowerment, the Sunday service will focus on nourishment. Nourishment through music, ancient wisdom writings (scripture), an inspirational lesson, chant, mantra, meditation and prayer…..all in the company of a loving, supportive community where all are welcome.
