So, we’ve made our choice? Donald Trump is the winner in the 2016 Presidential Election? As a bleeding heart liberal, I find this hard to believe and it’s a difficult pill to swallow (though Hillary wasn’t my first choice either). Yet, I understand how and why Donald Trump won the popular and the electoral vote. (To all those I love and deeply care for who voted for Trump – I love you and I honor the choice that you made. Your vote (and I hope my vote) in no way, shape or form changes our relationship. PLEASE know this as you (if you) continue reading on.)
Donald Trump did not win because of his resume, his experience or expertise in governance, or his interviewing skills. We did not elect Donald Trump because we truly believed he was the best person to run our country and to represent the United States to the rest of the world. We chose Donald Trump because he spoke to our fears, while promising to rid the world of all that we fear:
- Our fear of “the other” (blacks, Hispanics, Mexicans, the disabled, Muslim, powerful women, etc.)
- Our fear of terrorism.
- Our fear of losing our guns.
- Our fear of losing our jobs to China and India.
- Our fear of violence.
- Our fear of losing our status as the “greatest power in the world.”
We chose Donald Trump because we are afraid and he capitalized on those fears. Fear begets fear.
Now let’s go to the other side of the presidential race – for all of you (me included) who voted for Hillary, wrote in another, or refrained from voting…..you may now be quaking in your boots wondering what the hell will happen to our world with a Republican controlled Senate with Donald Trump as President. Let me remind you: as much as fear elected Donald Trump, your fear over his victory will only serve to produce more fear. In fact, the fear that drove many to vote for Hillary in favor of Donald may be exactly what produced the outcome some most feared. Fear begets fear.
So, what is the answer as we stand in the outcome of a presidential victory that came forth out of fear and has the potential for producing more fear…….CHOOSE LOVE.
First choose to love your fellow human being. We all voted with our conscience and made the best choice we could with the information we had and the choices we were given. Love one another. Do not allow the outcome of this election to create more separation between us, instead, let it become a bridge to love and understanding. Find out what our mutual fears might be and support each other in calming these fears.
Supporting each other in calming our fears, begins with knowing how to manage our own. In every moment of every day where you find your fears and anxiety triggered over questions about the future of our country and the future of the world….turn away from your fear and turn toward love.
