An Upside-Down World

We are living in a truly upside-down world.  Everywhere I look I see division and heartbreak. People hating people.  People hating the planet. People hating themselves.

When did our world become a world of hate? Or perhaps it’s always been this way and only now, with the advent of the internet with its instant global information, are we seeing the underbelly of humanity as it has always been.  Are we doomed forever to be a species that places division and separation above all other human traits?  The very real fear, is that if we continue with all this hatred, we will soon find that we have destroyed ourselves.   Who will be left to tell the story of a species that destroyed itself and the world through all their hatred?

I’m not convinced, however, that destruction is our only fate. I have seen the good in humanity and believe that we can do better.  We can do soooooooooo much better.

While fear causes us to divide, humanity is also capable of great love. Everyday we are witness to this love – in the face of a parent as they hold their newborn child; in the hand of a caregiver reaching out to bind another’s wound, in the arms of a husband holding his beloved in their death, in the voice of the advocate who speaks out on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves.

I believe that Love is our natural state, whereas division and hatred are unnatural. The challenge is that for so many, fear was the environment in which they were raised, so division is what they learned. The key to healing humanity (and therefore our planet), is to heal the traumas that have caused us to divide. When we do this, there is quite naturally, more room for Love.

Healing these traumas and the fear that has caused us to divide is no easy task, but it can be done. I have done it myself, have guided hundreds to do this for themselves and have seen others find their own path to this healing. The resources available to support us in this healing are abundant – we need simply seek them out and we will find them.

The desire for healing and for creating more room for our natural state of Love is written in our DNA. We need simply pay attention to the restlessness, frustration, impatience, and longing that plague us and allow it to lead us. The Love that is our natural state will never steer us wrong.  Where is it leading us?  Back to our most natural and original selves. Back to Love.

Where is Love leading you?

Shredded by a Nation at War with Itself

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have been declared the projected winners of the 2020 presidential/vice presidential race.  While I voted for Biden/Harris I do not count this projected win as a victory.  After four years of violent division along political lines, no matter the winner of the presidential race, our nation has lost.  We are further lost by the fact that neither candidate seem to be interested in or capable of facilitating the broad-sweeping change that is truly necessary in our nation. Campaign promises notwithstanding, division continues to plague us with a political system that continues to be less about the people our politicians represent and more about those who pad their pockets.

But the point of this reflection is not politics.  It is about being an empath and what the past four years have been like for me and for my sisters and brothers who have been equally affected.  With all that has transpired over the past four years, I am having a difficult time trusting this “win” while waiting for the other shoe to drop.  The prophet in me doubts there will be a peaceful transition.  More importantly, I am seeing how the “two sides” still seem to be at war with each other and beyond the actions of the departing president, there are those on both sides who seem to want to continue the battle.

It is this battle that has left me feeling shredded.  As an empath, I have felt this battle deep within my own body.  I have felt the battle of our nation in every fiber of my being, experiencing the sensation of being torn apart as the nation has done this to itself.  Every fight on social media, every news story depicting people against people, every conspiracy theory, every Q-Anon campaign, every violent word that has come forth out of the mouths of my human sisters and brothers have torn me apart.

As a trauma survivor, I know well the symptoms of PTSD and my personal triggers.  The past four years have put me on high alert and have impacted me no matter how much self-care I have done, meditation I have performed, shadow work I have accomplished, or how many times I have reached out to my doomsday team for support.  To say it plainly, the past four years have SUCKED and there is not one side to blame.  (not to mention I don’t believe in blame anyway). We are all guilty of participating in this division, including myself.  And I am heartbroken over the way Americans have treated Americans in the past four years.  If I still believed in shame, I would say we should be ashamed.  But what we really need to do is heal.

And the thought of trying to heal the mess we have made of our nation is beyond exhausting.  I cannot even bring myself to entertain this idea or what it might look like.  As one who has carried the burden of this division and done all I can do to try to be a source of healing, I feel a little used up.  My set-point is hope, but truthfully, in this moment, hope is difficult to muster. Part of me has lost faith in the American people.  How can we be so cruel and hateful?  How can we be so ignorant of and uncaring about the needs of others?  Why must everything be a fight?  Why can’t we just get along?  I don’t understand it.

It is for all of these reasons that I have been and will continue to be quiet about the outcome of this election.  Until we learn how to come together for healing and in support of the common good, we have all lost.

The Death of the Old World

As it turns out, Michael Stipe was somewhat of a prophet when he penned the lyrics to the popular REM song, It’s the End of the World as We Know it….and I Feel Fine:

Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn. World serves its own needs, dummy, serve your own needs. Feed it off an aux speak, grunt, no strength. The ladder starts to clatter with fear fight, down, height. Wire in a fire, representing seven games In a government for hire and a combat site. Left of west and coming in a hurry With the furies breathing down your neck Team by team reporters baffled, trumped, tethered, cropped. Look at that low playing! Fine, then. Uh oh, overflow, population, common group But it’ll do. Save yourself, serve yourself. World serves its own needs, listen to your heart bleed, Dummy, with the rapture and the rev-‘rent and the right, right. You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright light Feeling pretty psyched. It’s the end of the world as we know it….

And I feel fine!

How did Michael Stipe know in 1987 that this is EXACTLY where we would be today?

As a nation, we have never been more separate than we are now (except maybe during the Civil War). Beyond our nation, we have sowed the seeds of separation worldwide. We now stand as people against people, nation against nation, religion against religion, gender against gender, race against race, etc. etc. etc. As many prophets have told us, (Jesus, Abraham Lincoln), a nation and a world divided cannot stand. What we have witnessed in the past week is this world of separation in its collapse.

While it is terrifying to watch this world crumble, this is the hope that I cling to:

That out of this division, UNITY will arise.

That after all is said and done we will come together as a people, as a nation, as a world. Because if we do not, it will not only be the end of the world as we know it, it will be the end of us. If we do not find a way to transcend the fear and separation that has built the wall between us we too will meet our demise.

Unity or Division – it is our choice.

I, for one, am choosing union and here is how you can do the same:

Cultivate unity within yourself. Identify all the places within yourself where fear rears its ugly head and find ways to heal, transform and even release that fear. Find out who you are, what your gifts are and how you are called to use these gifts for the sake of your own fulfillment and in service to the world. (Hint: I can help you with that.)

Cultivate union between yourself and others. Get to know other people, other races, other religions, other nationalities, other cultures, other anything! At our heart, we are more similar than we are different. At the end of the day we ALL want the same things: food on our table, a roof over our head, clothing on our back, a safe place to live, meaningful work.

Exercise compassion, empathy, understanding. Put yourself in the shoes of “the other” and walk around a bit. See what it feels like to be poor, hungry, abused, deprived of your rights and liberties.

Stand up for the rights of others. The Golden Rule works well here. How would you want to be treated? Treat others with the same dignity and respect.

Show others how to do the same.

This is how the new world of Unity will arise out of the ash of the old. What will be your choice? Unity or Division?

Election 2016: From Division to Oneness

Well, it seems the “powers that be” got what they wanted – a nation that is distracted and divided. It seems no matter how people speak about the outcome of the U.S. presidential election and the transition from one “leader” to another, someone gets pissed off.  On Facebook, for example, I recently mentioned the grief some are feeling over the Obama’s departure, and all hell broke loose.  Then I dared to mention that we are entering into a time of uncertainty and I got hate emails from those who took my comments as an insult against their presidential choice, which was certainly not my intention!

As it turns out, division is a choice. We decide if we are going to hate our fellow Americans simply because of their vote.  We are also the ones who decide if we are offended or insulted by another person who is choosing to share their personal beliefs, perspectives or even their personal experience.  We decide!

I am choosing NOT to be divided, because, in the immortal words of our sixteenth president, Abraham Lincoln, “a house divided against itself cannot stand.” I am also making this choice because division is exactly what the powers that be want.  If we are divided, then we will remain distracted from the evils the “puppet masters” are accomplishing in the world – destroying our environment, putting thousands (millions) of people out of work, depriving people of quality and affordable health care, undermining our educational system, destroying the air that we breathe, the water that we drink and the soil in which we need to grow our crops, raping foreign countries for their cheap labor and oil, while watching those countries destroy their own environments with toxic chemicals, pollution and deforestation.

All of this, they are accomplishing, not for our benefit, but for the sake of their greedy quest for wealth, power and control. We are all suffering because of the actions of the very few (1% of the 1%).  And if they continue on this course, and are able to do so because we are too busy fighting amongst ourselves to see or care about what they are doing, then our entire world will be destroyed.  What they don’t know is that if they destroy the world in their unending quest for power, they will also be destroying themselves (unless they have some space station set up for their escape after they are done destroying this world).

If we want to survive as a species, we HAVE to find a way to look beyond the division brought about by this election and toward unification. Unification does not mean you have to change your beliefs or the policies that you stand for.  Unification means we look beyond our (perceived) differences toward the goals we hold in common:

  • Food on our table.
  • A roof over our head.
  • Clothes on our back.
  • The feeling of being safe.
  • A quality education.
  • Affordable and quality healthcare for ourselves and our families.
  • Meaningful work which supports our need for survival.
  • Loving relationships.
  • Community.
  • Clean water to drink, clean air to breathe, healthy food to nourish our bodies and our souls.
  • The opportunity to enjoy our time on this planet and to enjoy the beauty of the world we were given to care for.

THESE are the issues that really matter. These are the issues that will determine if we live or die or if we are able to survive as a species. And these are the issues we all care about.  Whether  you call yourself Republican, Democrat, Green Party, Libertarian, Socialist, Communist, Bleeding Heart Liberal, Hippie, Black Panther, or anything in between….our foundational needs and desires are the same.  Focusing on THIS, we will move beyond the distractions, beyond the perceived division and toward the unified effort that will deprive the 1% of the 1% of their power and make OUR WORLD the great planet it was meant to be!
