Readying Ourselves for the Week (Months) Ahead!

“THIS is exactly what we are facing today as a human collective.  What world do we want to live in?  What world are we choosing for ourselves?  Are we going to hitch our wagon to the dying world and accompany it in its death or are we going to choose the (as yet unknown) path to a new world – a new kind of human experience.  It is a battle both within us, among us and outside of us.  The decision that we make for ourselves will then determine the world we will be living in.”

Good morning sisters and brothers,

As many of you know, on Monday I got SLAMMED by a major energy push that resulted in vertigo, nausea and a 6 day migraine.  UGH!  In typical Lauri fashion I had to ask every question about what I could possibly have done wrong to warrant such a migraine?  Is it the medication I’m taking and the recent dosage increase?  Is it the weight I gained when hitting menopause (and helped along by the Covid shutdown).  Am I getting enough exercise?  Is it something I’m eating (or drinking)?  The weather?  Allergies?  Some deep wound that is trying to find its way out?  Any of the above?  None of the above? Sigh!

After several days of self-flagellating, moaning in pain and feeling sorry for myself, and then a few more days of punishing myself for “not being productive,” I did a DEEP DIVE and discovered one thing:

I DID NOTHING WRONG

Yes, this nothing wrong had something to do with an old wound trying to find its way out, but the more I tried to “work” on that wound the more there was truly nothing to do.  I simply had to see it and then let it be.

More importantly, the nothing wrong that I did, had absolutely NOTHING to do with me and

EVERYTHING TO DO WITH THE WORLD ON FIRE

Literally and figuratively.  As the literal fires burn around our world (prayers for all those in the line of these fires!), the world as we have known it is going up in flames.  The world that we have known, based in fear/power/oppression/and control is burning itself to the ground.  Can you feel it?  If this week’s “migraine” is any example, the world as we have known it is at war with itself. And it hurts!

If you think things have been bad (thank you Covid-19), just wait.  They are about to get a whole lot worse.  The energies of this inner war have been amping up all year and are not even close to reaching their climax.  If you are sensitive at all, you are feeling the heightened tensions in our world, the increasing division, the fear and anxiety about what is up ahead.  I hate to be the bearer of bad news but “up ahead” is no picnic!  In fact, it’s about to get really ugly:

  • Our kids are going back to school. If this doesn’t terrify you, you have not been paying attention.  We are about to embark on one of the biggest social experiments in our human history. We are sending 56.6 million (not including college) students back to school, along with their teachers and staff.  We have absolutely no idea if this is a good idea or a REALLY BAD idea and we have ZERO clue about the consequences of this decision.  As a mother whose children were once that age (thank God they are now adults) I cannot help but wonder if we are sending our lambs to the slaughter.  We might find that nothing happens or that something horrible will happen.  Either way, if you aren’t nervous about school starting, perhaps you should be!
  • The U.S. Presidential Race. OMG!  What a shit show!  It doesn’t matter on what side of the political fence you lean; it is all chaos!  Whether it is the fight over mail in ballots, obstacles to voting, the Covid-19 fears about voting in person, or the simple fight over who is a better man (?????) to run our nation, it is all insanity.  As one who for the past many presidential elections has voted democrat, I enjoyed many of the speeches of the Democratic National Convention, but I also felt the wave of reaction from those who lean toward “the other side.”  I also felt (and heard) the crying out from those who are looking for even more radical reform than a middle of the road Democratic ticket will produce (if any). I can also feel (palpably) the RNC readying their response.  The image I keep getting is that of stressed out monkeys in a cage who are flinging poo at each other.  Did I mention it’s a shit show?  Literally!
  • The Battle in Our Collective Consciousness – This, is perhaps the most painful while also being the most subtle.  I liken this battle to the same one I have repeatedly witnessed in those who are dying (or facing the possibility of death).  There is a profound moment where on a very deep spiritual and unconscious level, their Soul is deciding whether to stay or if they should go.  It is a deeply invisible and personal process that I have had the privilege of witnessing. I have never seen the moment of decision, but I have seen them in the process of making that decision.  The result of that decision shows itself in either the person “giving up the ghost” or making an often difficult but no-less miraculous return.

Our Personal Choice:

THIS is exactly what we are facing today as a human collective.  What world do we want to live in?  What world are we choosing for ourselves?  Are we going to hitch our wagon to the dying world and accompany it in its death or are we going to choose the (as yet unknown) path to a new world – a new kind of human experience.  It is a battle both within us, among us and outside of us.  The decision that we make for ourselves will then determine the world we will be living in.

Readying Ourselves for that Choice

But before we are able to make that choice, we have to arm ourselves against the increasing hysteria that will accompany the current world in its death throes!  Like the deeply invisible work of the Soul in its decision for life or death, we have to turn inward.  We have to go deep within ourselves……AWAY from the insanity of the dying world.  Think of it like one in the hospital constantly being poked, prodded, and assessed by nurses and doctors and how much of a distraction that is from the deep inner work needed to arrive at a choice.  The same is true for us.  We need to UNPLUG from the world “out there,” stay out of the fray of the battle, let those who need to battle throw their shit and BY GOD……STAY OUT OF THE LINE OF FIRE!  Inserting ourselves into the battle will only get us covered in shit.  Instead:

  • Go inward.
  • Be still.
  • Be quiet.
  • Exercise patience.
  • Trust in the unfolding of the Universe and the Divine plan for love.
  • Resist the temptation to engage.
  • Pray.  Pray.  Give your energy to love and share that love with a world profoundly in need of it.
  • Connect with your tribe.
  • Return to nature.
  • Engage in creativity.
  • Keep life simple.

It is only out of this quiet simplicity that our Soul decision can be made.  What is the world we want to live in?  What does it look like?  How does it feel?

As the world around us implodes upon itself, stay focused on the world of your Soul’s choosing and make every decision in support of that world.  As the world around you crumbles, behold your chosen world rising from among the ashes – not because some outside perceived authority (ie a President) made it happen, but because you did!

It’s Loathsome and Hideous, Yet I Can’t Look Away

It’s Loathsome and Hideous, Yet I Can’t Look Away

These immortal words from the TV series Seinfeld, perfectly sum up the times we are in and the greatest temptation for those of us who are here to build the new world.

We live in a time when everything around us seems to be in conflict.  Everything we thought we knew about our world and the perceived security it claimed to provide is falling around us.  In the U.S. we have become a nation divided within a world divided….and we seem to somehow be the cause of that global division.  The world around us no longer makes sense – if it ever did, and the people around us have most definitely stopped making sense.  (cue David Byrne)

We are living in one of the most magnificent times in the history of human beings – both from the perspective of devastation and from the place of promise.  The shadows have all come out to play.  That which we have ignored, denied, shoved under the rug – have all made themselves loudly known.  Racism.  Sexism.  Classism. Privilege.  Nationalism.  The sins of unbridled Capitalism. The sexual crimes of men in power. The sins of the power elite (who is really the cause of global and domestic terrorism?????  Hmmmmm???)  The nature of the beast is as hideous as it is captivating.  As veil upon veil upon veil gets torn away and the views become increasingly disturbing, one is tempted to want to go into battle, or simply collapse in despair.  To some, there is no hope as the truths of our world prove to be increasingly horrific.  The world “out there” has become like a runaway train or a 40-car pileup – it is terrifying to behold, and yet we cannot look away.

The greatest temptation as we view the world hurling itself toward its own destruction is to rush in to try to save it.  But we cannot.  Neither should we try.  The world built on fear, power and control is imploding upon itself and THANK GODDESS!  It is long past time for the world of fear, power and control ruled by rich white men to come to its natural end.  Unbridled pride, gluttony, greed, vengeance, jealousy (competition), hatred and ignorance are and have proven themselves to be unsustainable to anyone other than those who are holding the gold.  What the gold-bearers have not yet realized, however, is that in destroying the world they will inevitably be destroying themselves.  (But maybe, they are that selfish and that short-sighted.)

The truth that is coming to bear is that an unsustainable system will eventually collapse upon itself.  This is EXACTLY what we are currently witnessing in our world, and there is nothing we can do to stop it.  Its life has come to its natural end, making room for a new world to be born out of the ash. For that new world to be born, we need to STOP engaging with the old and dying world.  We need to allow the shriveled, whimpering Voldemort to die his own peaceful death.

In other words, “pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.”  As the dying world continues to vie for our attention, we are distracted from the purpose we came here to fulfill.  We are not here to save the dying world.  We are here to build something new.  That something new is happening right here in our very midst (look at what the young people are doing) and we are each here to play our own role in the creation of something new.  When we engage in or with the dying world, try to make sense of what is happening “out there” or try to convince others of our cause, we are distracted from the task we came here to complete.  We cannot build our new world when drawn in by the moans of the dying world, neither can we care for ourselves when administering aid to that which cannot be saved.  As harsh as this may sound, it is our job to let it die, and if that means covering our ears to the death wails and covering our eyes to the death and devastation, then so be it.  (This does not mean we cease from doing our part to care for the casualties of a world at war with itself.  It is still our job to advocate for the voiceless and to support the needs of the choiceless.  Let love be your guide.) Like a spoiled rotten child, the dying world will do everything in its power to keep us in their drama.  Just say no.

Discipline.  Persistence.  Tenacity. Let these words be our mantra as we do everything in our power to keep ourselves free of the magnetic drama of the world destroying itself so that we can tend to what we are really here for – to build a WHOLE (rooted in union, harmony, peace, collaboration, compassion and love) new world.

Changes and Spiritual A.D.D.

There are three things that are certain in this life:

Death

Taxes and……

Change!

There is nothing in our lives that remains the same. Everything is moving and in constant flux – even the tiny atoms that are moving within the solid steel frames that make up our buildings and our roads.

Everything changes and our lives are in constant motion. Our life is a continual movement from birth to growth to death and back to birth again. There is not one moment in our life where we are not birthing, growing, and dying.  The amazing thing is that all of these – birthing, growing and dying are all happening at the same time.  We are always in the process of birthing something new.  We are always nurturing and growing that new life. And we are always tending to the death of that which no longer serves.

These are sobering thoughts; and they really put into perspective the conditioning that teaches us to cling to what we have known and to seek after security and surety.

Question:  is this conditioning or a function of our drive to survive? We have been told it is the latter, but I’m beginning to think it is more of the former.  The ancients seem to have had a much better grip on the reality of change and seemed to tap into and surrender to the movement of this change.  They also seemed to have found a way to survive and thrive without being attached to “the same.”  Hmmmmmm  perhaps another thing we can learn from those who have gone before us……

I digress…

Change. Change.  Change.  Everything is changing.  The ancients knew this and found a way to harness the gifts of that knowledge.  The sages and teachers of old wrote about it.  Modern day people sing about it.  (Cue: David Bowie!) Everything is changing and nothing remains the same.

But, we are conditioned to want things to remain the same. We cling to what we have known.  We writhe and scream and cry when that which we cling to is being pried from our cold, dead fingers.  And we are terrified of the new because we don’t know what it is; we cannot control it; we cannot make it happen and we cannot force it.

Kind of like birthing a baby! I have birthed two and I can attest that the baby comes in its own damn time and only in the way that it wants to come into the world. Yes, modern medicine (and ancient medicine for that matter) have tools to help bring the baby into the world (especially if something is happening in the birthing process that would put the mother or child’s life at risk); but as any mother will attest – there is a cost to applying these interventions.

The same is true in life. New life comes in its own damn time and only in the way that the Soul intends.  We cannot force it.  We cannot make it happen.  We cannot hasten its arrival.  All we can do is create the space in which this new life can take root (like preparing the nursery for the arrival of your new child).  We can prepare the soil.  We can plant the seeds.  We can tend and water those seeds.  But no amount of efforting will make those seeds grow until they are darn ready to sprout and grow.

The same is true of death. That which needs to pass from our lives – outmoded ways of being, non-serving beliefs, behaviors that no longer serve, jobs that have outlived their usefulness, etc. – will pass from our lives no matter what we do to cling to them.  Oh yes, we can cling, we can hang on, we can grasp and bargain and plead, and that which needs to die might indeed remain (because of our clinging); but it will no longer be life-giving.  Instead, it will be like the shriveled up, half-dead, immobile and worthless part of Voldemort that remained after he and Harry killed each other.

We can cling to what we have known, or we can surrender to the natural movement of our lives toward change. Forever moving from that which one day served to the new life that beckons on the other side of surrender and death.

It is our spiritual practice that helps us in navigating the ever-churning waters of life’s journey. Developing, cultivating and nurturing our spiritual practice supports us in learning how to be with whatever stage of life’s movement we currently find ourselves in.  Our practice helps us to be ok with “what is.”  It also supports us in discerning this movement – when is it time to stay and when is it time to go (Cue: The Clash).  Our practice guides us to the voice of truth within along with our inner compass which helps us to recognize the signs of death along with the beckoning call of new life.  And our practice helps us to move gently and (somewhat) effortlessly through the constant movement and changes of life.  Through our practice we are able to surrender to the flow and find peace within us.

But….sometimes our practice fails us. Try as we might, we cannot find peace or contentment within that flow.  In spite of our efforts to tend to our spiritual practice and to harness its gifts for helping us surrender and find contentment within the movement of our life journey, we cannot find the fruits.  Sometimes we can’t even “do” our spiritual practice because even these efforts seem to be failing.

But they are not! Even though it feels like we might have Spiritual A.D.D., we are not failing.  Instead, we are in the stage of our Soul’s journey that is akin to the transition stage of labor.  There is this place when the babe is trying to be born that is called transition and I can attest that IT IS INSANE!  Transition feels as if someone has plugged you into a 220 outlet and you are ON FIRE.  Every cell of the body feels charged with electricity.  You feel restless, anxious and (for me anyway) like you will kill anyone that gets in your way.  You can’t sit still.  The mind is anxious.  You feel like you want to run. Nothing provides comfort.  What seems comfortable in one moment is not the next. It is like an energy has entered the body and is doing everything it can to bring forth this new life and you are possessed by this energy.

The same thing happens in death. Those who have tended to the dying call this the “death throes.”  Similar to transition in labor, the person who is dying is overcome with restlessness, frustration, discomfort, anxiousness.  Nothing will make them comfortable.  They writhe and thrash and (if they are able) pace as the energy that seeks to usher them into death prepares them for the transition from life into death.

When we are at this stage in our personal journey – when the old is trying to pass away to make way for the new while the new is simultaneously trying to come into being, it is ok to be restless, frustrated, anxious and uncomfortable. This is natural and expected.  When this stage shows up all we can do is surrender.  As it relates to spiritual practices, when it feels like we are suffering from Spiritual A.D.D., all we can do is surrender.  Walk away from the practice if you need to.  Or do what I do, return to the oldie moldie practices which at the very least give my mind a break.  When even this fails I “go with it.”  Instead of resisting the energies of transition, I engage in them.  I dance.  I take a walk in nature.  I cook.  I clean.  I find something to do with the restless energies in my body (kind of like all the pacing I did when I labor).  And then I let it be.

That which is passing out of our lives will leave in its own damn time. The same is true of the life that is trying to be born.  We can surrender to this truth or suffer the sure consequence of resisting.  The choice is ours.  What would you choose?
