When Life’s Purpose is Struggle and Pain

When Life’s Purpose is Struggle and Pain

No one said life would be easy. In fact, most of the time it is hard.  This is true even when we have found our life’s meaning, purpose and mission.  Look at Jesus for example, or Martin Luther King, Jr.  Even the Dalai Lama has faced his fair share of adversity.  This is especially true for those who are called into this life to transform and transmute the difficulties of this life into something meaningful.  Empaths, Shadow Walkers, and Shadow Workers, especially, are called to this task.  Not unlike Jesus, their (our) job is to experience the fullness of the human experience – suffering and all – so that others might live.  Empaths, Shadow Workers and Shadow Walkers feel and experience the suffering of the world in ways that others do not.  Not only do they (we) have their own unique brand of suffering, they feel the suffering and pain of others.  The purpose of the suffering is so that healing may come to the pain.  More than anything else, Empaths, Shadow Walkers and Shadow Workers are healers.  This is what we came here to be and to do.

Transmuting the Darkness.

Seeing and Feeling the pain,

the fear,

the constriction of the world.

Receiving it into the forge of our own bodies

So that it may be transformed.

Plunging into the depths

In search of every pebble of darkness

So as to bring it forth into the light.

To point out to humanity, the source of all that ails it.

Not because they have sinned,

But because they have allowed their fear to choose their path,

Instead of that which was originally intended –

A path made only of love.

Each of us is uniquely gifted to find meaning and purpose in our lives and to be a vessel through which healing, transformation, love may come into the world. The Secret Cure for All that Ails Us.

(If you missed my “Building the New World” report yesterday, read that HERE.)

“The secret cure to all that ails us,” isn’t much of a secret really. In fact, this “secret” is known by every great teacher that ever walked this earth (Jesus, the Buddha, Moses, Mohammad, Amma, Gandhi, The Dalai Lama, Thomas Merton, Meister Eckhart, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi, Ignatius of Loyola, Julian of Norwich, Hildegard of Bingen, Paramahansa Yogananda, Black Elk, The Thirteen Grandmothers, etc. etc. etc. This “secret” that has been discovered by the most revered teachers of every culture is…..(drumroll please)………

ONENESS

The Dalai Lama speaks of this oneness in the context of compassion. The Buddha spoke of it as presence or essence. Moses knew it as the voice of God within him who guided him and his people. Teresa of Avila experienced it as ecstasy. St. Ignatius experienced it as consolation. Jesus spoke of it as being One with God and he experienced this Oneness as love. Every great teacher discovered this truth within themselves and then sought to teach others how to experience this Oneness and how this Oneness was the cure of all that taints the human experience – pain, anxiety, suffering and death. Experiencing and knowing Oneness allows us to transcend the inherent pain and suffering of the human condition and it is in this state of Oneness that we know “the peace that surpasses all understanding.”

It is one thing to speak about Oneness and to understand it in our minds. It is another thing entirely to have a personal, lived experience of this Oneness as I was reminded just this past week. While I have had many glimpses into this Oneness over the course of the past fifty years, enough so that I understand and can speak with authority about Oneness, not until this past week did I fully comprehend or even experience Oneness and never before had I experienced Oneness to the extent that it was in fact too much for me and I had to run away. After a week of processing, I’m happy to come back to this Oneness….but first the story of finding the cure.

The Journey to Oneness

My experience of Oneness happened in the context of a shamanic journey in which I was carried away in a dreamlike vision in search for the answer to a question that resided deep in the center of my Soul – the question about fully embodying the call of my Soul in this life. In the journey I was greeted by one of my spiritual guides/teachers who often accompanies me on shamanic journeys. He grabbed my hand and ran with me to the world in which I would journey. When we arrived in that world it was night. As we stepped across the threshold into the journey world, I beheld a multitude of beings flanking us on both sides. I sensed the beings as my teachers, spirit guides, angels, saints, ancestors, loved ones – all present in spirit form offering their support. In the blink of an eye, my guide turned into a jet-black dragon while also being present in human form to “drive” the dragon. He grabbed my hand and pulled me atop the dragon and off we flew into the night.

We flew up and up and up across the journey world – past landmarks and places I had experienced in previous journeys. We flew up and up and up, out of the atmosphere of the earth and toward the full (blood) moon. We flew toward and then past the moon and continued out into space, past all the known planets of our galaxy, out beyond our galaxy and toward the constellation of Orion. We flew past Orion and on to the star cluster of Sirius. We then flew past Sirius, deep, deep, deep into the center of our known Universe toward what scientists refer to as “The Galactic Core.” The Galactic Core is what is beliefed to be the center of the Universe and the theorized Source of the original “Big Bang.” It is also out of the Galactic Core that our current experience of Wave X has its origins. Holding tightly to my guide as we flew atop the black dragon, we flew closer and closer to the Galactic Core when I became aware of a rhythmic pulsing emanating from this core. Wave after wave after wave of vibrating and pulsing energy came at me from this core which I suddenly realized was a heartbeat. Boom. Boom. Boom. Boom – resonating the steady heartbeat at the center of the Universe.

DSCF3146

God IS the Universe!  We are the Universe!

Then it hit me, this heartbeat which is thought to be the Source of all of creation and the origin of all that is known and unknown in our Universe is GOD. God has a heart and God’s heart resides in the center of our Universe and is the origin and source of all that is. Then my mind and vision began to expand – the Universe and all that is known and unknown in the Universe is the actual body of God and the galactic core is God’s heart – beating out a continuous and rhythmic pulsating vibration that I keenly identified as LOVE. Love. Love. Love. Love. – the steady heartbeat of the Universe/God that emanates from the center of all that is and which, in fact, is the cause and the source of all that is. Love. Love. Love. Love.

As I connected with this experience of God as the Universe and God’s beating heart as the galactic core of the universe and the center and source of all that is known and unknown in the universe – then my brain exploded. If God is the Universe and all that is….and we are part of all that is…..then we are part and parcel of God. If the Galactic Core is God’s beating heart than here on earth, we might be God’s big toe and each of us a pulsing cell within that toe. Equally, we might be God’s left eye – reflecting and refracting back to the Center of the Universe, to the beating galactic core of God’s heart all that God wants to see. In other words – if God is the Universe and we are part of the Universe then WE ARE ONE WITH GOD. And what we experience in this place of being One with God is LOVE. A love that is beyond what we can comprehend – a love that is all encompassing, embracing us in rapturous ecstasy. A love that destroys all that makes us small and elevates us to our original nature as ONE in LOVE. Living as love, out of love and for the purpose of love. Love. Love. Love.

THIS is the truth that sets us free. THIS is the cure to all that ails us. Love that made and flows steadily throughout the entire universe and beats steady and pure from the center of all that is. We are one with this love as part of the living universe and one with this love through our own beating hearts. Love is all there is. All there is is love. When we know this we know peace, contentment, joy and love. THIS is the reason for all our restlessness, boredom and longing – LOVE calling us home.

The Fruitless Search for Ego-lessness

Yesterday, I was reminded, yet again, that it is not for the sake of egolessness that we are here…..but to be human.

The Relentless Pursuit of Ego-lessness….and pop-culture’s addiction to perfectionism

Yep.  I’ve been there.  With both feet, body, mind and spirit I jumped on board the pop-culture Ego-eradication craze, reading every book, embracing every practice, watching every movie in the hopes of being freed of my ego.  Hmmmm I might have even written a book reflective of this desire.   😉  And….I am the perfect victim.  My Perfectionist LOVES the idea that with the right kind and right amount of spiritual practice, learning, etc. I might indeed become perfect….free of ego….an enlightened being, spiritual teacher and master.  All of this has been the perfect fuel for the inner critic and judge that wags her finger of shame and blame at me pointing out all the places where I am still imperfect….all those places where I still judge, where I become angry, harbor resentment, feel pain, grieve losses, hurt those I love, lose my temper, etc. etc. etc.  “But if I just pray and meditate enough all of this will be forgiven, I will finally be free and I will have the life I dream of filled with happiness, joy, opportunities for creative expression and I will be fulfilled, safe, secure and rich.”  This is what all these teachings promise, right?  But there is one thing missing in many of these pop-culture ego-eradication teachings: the fact that we are not here to be EGOLESS……  We are here to BE HUMAN!

Being Human

So…what DOES it mean to be human?  As much as we might like to deny it….being human means we get to experience ALL OF IT.  As a Divine Spirit being Human…..we get all of it:  Suffering.  Pain.  Worry.  Loss.  Deception.  Betrayal.  Our hearts get broken.  We fall apart.  Really bad things happen to really good people.  And really bad people get really good things.  We lose our minds.  We hunger.  We experience poverty.  We know injustice.  We might have to agree to things we don’t really believe we want to do.  We give our power away.  People rob our power from us.  We get sick.  And we die.  While we might want all of this to go away and to be freed from the reality of the human condition….this is NOT why we are here.  No matter how hard we pray or how much we engage our spiritual practice…all of these things will continue to happen.  I’m guessing even the Dalai Lama struggles with anger and resentment at times.  I know Jesus did.  So if even our greatest teachers struggle with being human….why do we think we should be any different?

No Congratulations Necessary

Yesterday, after setting my foot along a path that I have been avoiding, dreading, and not at all wanting to accept, I was congratulated for being a “great ego-less leader and teacher.”  BAH!  Egoless my ass!  I was mad as hell.  Frustrated.  Angry.  Ashamed.   Disappointed.  Grieving.  I was anything BUT egoless.  Instead I wrapped my arms around my ego as she was biting, kicking and screaming and set my foot along the path.  “You can rant and rave all you want,” I said to her, “we are going anyway.  I don’t know why this is where we are going or for what purpose, but we are going.  And….we’ll make the best of it.”  So, I forged on, in spite of my ego; and perhaps this is the best that we can do.

Questioning the “Law of Attraction”

Questions about the pop-culture phenomenon known as “The Law of Attraction” aka “The Secret.”  Sometimes, I think “success” and “failure” have nothing to do with our beliefs, thoughts, attitudes and are simply a matter of dumb luck!  What matters is what we do with the life that we have been given.

Being Faced with a Challenge

This weekend, I had the great opportunity to attend a yoga workshop and Kirtan event with teacher, musician and Kirtan facilitator, Wade Imre Morissette.  Before we began the Kirtan, Wade invited us to choose an intention for our prayer.  The first word that popped into my mind was abundance.  But as I sat with that word, it was quickly replaced with worthiness.  Worthiness….the one word I have perhaps wanted most to really embrace and believe in my life.  I really want to believe I am worthy of all the things I want in my life:  Worthy of a fulfilling and prosperous career.  Worthy of a deep and abiding love.  Worthy of loving friendships, good health, happiness, etc. etc. etc.  And I wondered, is this why I have not achieved the financial success that I desire in my business (it is already overwhelmingly fulfilling!)?  Do I not believe I am worthy of financial success?  This is what the “Law of Attraction” would tell me.  “If you are not prosperous, in the job you want and love, in a relationship that is loving, fulfilling, uplifting, mutually supportive, etc. etc. etc.  it is because YOUR THOUGHTS ARE WRONG.  Well, if the “Law of Attraction says so….”   So, I offered up my prayer, “Please God, help me to feel worthy so that I may receive the financial abundance that I need to fulfill my dreams of helping others through my abundance.”  Then……I heard someone slam their foot upon the heavenly brakes and the squealing of tires that could only mean 30 pounds of tread just got left behind on Heaven’s highway.

What if The Law of Attraction is NOT?

Wait a minute…….I heard the thoughts gathering in my head.  I know all kinds of people who have a boatload of money.  Some who worked very hard for it.  Some whose spouse worked very hard for it.  Some who seemed to accumulate it by accident.  Do all these people believe that they are worthy?  HECK NO!!!!  In fact many of these people are plagued by self-doubt, self-loathing, self-deprecation.  So, if these people who are so much better off financially than I am and struggle even more with worthiness than I do….WHAT GIVES?????  According to “The Law of Attraction,” belief and thought equals attainment.  If you believe you deserve it, if you believe you are worthy, then you will get it.  AND…..if you don’t have it, it is because you believed or thought wrongly. YOU are the creator and the source of your manifestation (or lack thereof).  At the end of the day, good or bad…..IT’S ALL YOUR FAULT!  To put it bluntly….I think that’s CRAP!

Sh…t   Happens

Sometimes, I just think that sh….t happens.  Some people are rich.  Some are poor.  Some have fulfilling careers.  Some do not.  Some find loving partnership easily.  Some search and search and never find it.  And, I find it really hard to believe that all those that DO NOT have what they want professionally, financially and personally do not have it because their thoughts or beliefs are wrong.  If that were the case, then none of us would really have what we want because  no one thinks all good things all day every day and most of us grew up in some sort of dysfunction that colors our beliefs and perceptions – sometimes negatively.  Not to mention, we are all born into the world with a unique lens through which we see, perceive and experience our human experience.  Not to get all Trent Reznor (one of my favorite nihilists) on you….but at the end of the day, perhaps a lot of it is just DUMB LUCK.

The Real Secret

So, if life is just a matter of chaotic, unordered, unpredictable events and bad things happen to good people, regardless of how they think or believe, now what?  WELCOME TO THE HUMAN CONDITION!  And……it doesn’t have to be “Life sucks and then you die.”  Are bad things going to happen to us?  Are the things we think we want sometimes elusive?  Will there be suffering and loss.  YOU BET.  AND…..we don’t have to allow it to destroy us!  This is the real secret that all the greatest spiritual teachers came to remind us.  Moses, Jesus, Mohammed, The Buddha, Yogananda, Babaji, Amma, the Dalia Lama, all come with the same message.  “The Human condition is the human condition.  And….suffering is optional.”  And……they have all left us tools with which we can SURVIVE, endure, transcend, make it through the stuff that life sometimes hands us:  sacred writings, words of wisdom, spiritual practices and rituals, etc. etc. etc.  Thanks to those who have gone before us, we have EVERYTHING we need to survive and maybe even ENJOY the human experience.  (Imagine that!)  Thanks to these teachers, we can stop worrying so much about how our thoughts or beliefs are dictating the condition of our lives, let go of the guilt over how it must somehow be our fault and focus on the tools that lead us to the peace and love of God.  And this peace and love of God is there for EVERYONE regardless of what we have, believe or think.

Love or Fear? The Choice is Yours

Today’s blog is inspired by a series of events and experiences that I have observed and confirmed by the following article on the coming of “the Age of Aquarius”  http://www.3ho.org/ecommunity/2011/09/the-aquarian-shift-what-will-be-different-about-our-world-after-november-11-2011/.  Whether you believe in the idea of a galactic shift or not, we are each given, in every moment of every day the opportunity to choose our life. Do we choose love and truth or fear?  The choice is ours….and the time to choose is NOW!

Mystic Crystal Revelations

Every single spiritual master that has graced this fair planet (Jesus, Moses, Mohammed, The Buddha, The Dalai Lama, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, St. Francis, Osho, Swami Rama, Yogananda, etc. etc. etc. ) attained the same understanding:  “All we need is love.”  Then they went out to share this truth with the world.  These teachers acknowledged THE common longing among human beings….and that is the longing to know love and to know peace.  Fear, they knew was the obstacle to knowing peace and love, and they shared with their students (and the rest of the world with them) specific tools for healing and releasing fear so that all could know the joyful contentment they had come to know within themselves.

And the Minds True Liberation

The key to knowing the love and the peace known by these spiritual masters is CHOICE!  And it is a matter of CHOICE.  Because of the nature of the human condition, peace and love are not likely to show up on their own.  Yes, we have fleeting glimpses of the love and the peace that we are, without ever picking up a spiritual text or engaging in a spiritual practice.  If, however, we want peace and love that will endure and if we want to more forward in our human journey in spite of the reality of fear, then we have to CHOOSE peace and love.  It is in choosing love over fear, truth over ego, peace over anxiety, joy over despair that we are liberated from the bondage of the human condition.  We find freedom when we choose love.  We find expansiveness when we know joy.  We find contentment when we cultivate peace.

Then Peace Will Guide the Planets and Love Will Steer the Stars

According to those that follow the science of astrology, November 11, 2011 marks the beginning of “The Age of Aquarius.”  Whether or not we believe in the “prophecies” about the significance of this planetary line up, one message is clear and it is clear for all of eternity……the time to choose is NOW.  If you want love, peace, joy, harmony and understanding, sympathy and trust abounding, no more falsehood or derision…..CHOOSE IT!  Stop allowing fear to run your life.  Choose love.  Choose peace.  Choose joy.  And support that choice through sound spiritual practice.  And if you need additional support, read my book 🙂  Authentic Freedom – Claiming a Life of Contentment and Joy!

Hippie Prophets

The song, “The Age of Aquarius” by the Fifth Dimension is the very first song I ever remember hearing as a child and THE song that touched me in a deeply impactful and significant way.  When I first heard the song….I believed it.  I knew this was where we were being led as human beings and I knew that we would see the words of that song manifest in our lifetimes.  For whatever reason, this song has become the guiding principle of my life and I truly believe that the Divine was speaking to me in some way through this song.  So….without further ado:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0G8XJNz4bY  Let the Sunshine in!

What are the fears that stand as obstacles to your own inner peace?

How can you begin to choose love, peace, joy, instead of fear?

The Cold Black Hole of Hatred

What do we do with the negative emotions of the human experience?  In today’s blog, we explore the emotion of hatred.

Setting the bar

While the perfectionist in me has set the spiritual evolution bar to be situated somewhere between the Dalai Lama and Jesus Christ, real life continues to remind me that I am nothing more than human.  I have grown accustomed to the revelations of my humanness in emotions such as grief and resentment and in personality traits such as impatience and rigidity.  This weekend, however, I was shocked and surprised to come face to face with the cold hard reality of an emotion I had thought long ago healed.  This emotion is hatred.

Exploring Hatred

The revelation of hatred as being something that still exists within me came through a series of journaling exercises and life experiences.  I won’t bore you with the details, but I was shocked when suddenly I felt all the energy of my body, my mind and my spirit contract and hurl itself into the center of my chest where it became the cold black hole of hatred.  My eyes turned black, the tendons along the sides of my neck and on the top of my shoulders unfurled like the poisonous lizards from the movie Holes, black spikes like a medieval flail sprung up along my back, my fists and jaw clenched and I’m sure that smoke was coming out of my ears.  I felts as if I were to open my mouth, a swarm of black nails would fly out in pursuit of the objects of my hatred.  And I can tell you that if I actually possessed this superhero power, in that moment, I would have employed it!  I do have to say, however, that tapping into the cold depths of hatred was actually terrifying.  It is a feeling that quite frankly scared the crap out of me.

What do you do with Hatred?

Considering I am not usually one to act violently, I’m pretty sure I will not be acting on the hatred that recently surfaced.  I’m not even sure I totally understand this emotion.  It feels akin to resentment, which I have recently been invited to recognize as a natural response to our needs not being met.  Hatred, however, feels like RESENTMENT times A MILLION.  While there may be elements in this hatred related to needs not being met, it feels like something more than this.  Normally, I would explore compassion, empathy, forgiveness as possible paths to healing this hatred, but with this hatred, there seems to be something about the lack of culpability and a distinct intention to harm.  How does one have empathy or compassion for cruelty?  These are the questions I ponder when I look into the mirror and see the black steel eyes of hatred staring back at me.

Hatred and Boundaries

If I consider hatred to be the much uglier sister to resentment, then I am invited to explore the possibility that hatred might be arising to ask me to set some new boundaries.  The serenity prayer comes to mind, “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.” I have come to recognize that I cannot change the instigators of the hatred.  I can, however, change my relationship to these instigators.  So perhaps this is the invitation….to recognize the hatred as a BIG HUGE RED FLAG that says, “YOU DO NOT NEED TO PUT UP WITH CRUELTY!”    Holy crap, now that is a revelation!  And this is exactly what my buddy, the Dalai Lama did in the face of intolerable cruelty at the hand of Chairman Mao and his communist regime, he left.  HHHMMMMM  Maybe I will grow up to be the Dalai Lama afterall …  😉

Where have you experienced hatred in your life?

How did you choose to respond?

How can the experience of hatred be used as a tool for effective healing and change?

Happy All Saints’ Day!

As one who was raised Catholic, All Saints’ Day holds a special place in my heart.  All Saints’ Day gives honor to all the men and women who became examples of the Christ message and were honored within the Catholic Church as “Saint”.  For myself, it is the one “holy day of obligation” that I can actually remember and made a point to honor by attending mass and paying my own respect to the saints who have played a special role in my own life.  Since All Saints’ Day falls on a Monday this year, mass will not be offered locally (I know, dumb, right!?), so I will give honor to my favorite saints (canonized and not) in prayer and meditation and through this blog:

Hildegard of Bingen

Joan of Arc

Bernadette Soubirous

Teresa of Avila

Francis and Clare of Assisi

John of the Cross

Dorothy Day

Mother Theresa of Calcutta

Catherine of Siena

Mary, Mother of Jesus

Mary Magdalene (my personal all-time favorite!!!!!)

John the Evangelist

The author of “The Cloud of Unknowing”

Martin Luther

Maria Goretti

Oscar Romero

Mahatma Ghandi

HH Dalai Lama

Edith Stein

Mary Jo Copeland

And I share with you today my FAVORITE litany of the saints that I learned while I was at the Newman Center at UW Oshkosh and that I looked forward to singing on All Saints’ Day and at the Easter Vigil:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2Zyj1PwSfM

All you holy men and women, pray for us!

Who are the spiritual men and women who have been a role model and example for you in your own life?

How can you honor and remember them today?
