A Witch! A Witch!

Responding to the Catholic self-appointed inquisition.

Just when I think I am off their radar and free of the wrath of the Catholic self-appointed inquisition, they rear their fearful head. This morning as I was enjoying a glimpse of the new and expansive opportunities that are coming my way, not the least of which is the pending release of my new book – Union – a year of spiritual lessons and practices with Mary Magdalene, this shows up in my email.  Not one….but two emails from the same individual spewing their wrath:

You wicked evil christian. You thought you could deceive me and lead me to believe you really discern spirits when in fact you said it led you to practice Reiki, an occult practice forbidden for Catholics.

The Lord rebuke you. It sickens me you practice Reiki.

Your charism is not from God. The occult practices indicate otherwise. What I don’t understand is why mix catholicism with the occult?

Even if you have the charism, I know you are not in the truth because you are an occult practioner who is doing what is forbidden by Catholic practice. What happened to you…

I’m really saddened to see that you practice the occult because if you really do have the charism of discernment, The Church and people really do need it and not mixed with occult practices…

Normally, I would not give any energy or attention to emails such as these, but today, I find myself particularly annoyed, not because of their words, but because of the larger message behind these words which is:

If you are a woman who happens to be doing the work that Jesus did, you are evil, wicked, doing the work of Satan and condemnable as a witch.

As it relates to being a witch, I wear that mantle proudly for to me being a witch means:

  • Dedicating my life in service to the Divine and in support of the betterment of our world.
  • Emptying myself so as to be a vessel through which the Divine might be known in our world through my own unique gifts.
  • Allowing the Divine to work through my spiritual gifts of discernment, teaching, encouragement, leadership, pastoring, prophecy and healing to transform our world from fear into love.
  • Engaging in ritual practices for the purpose of concretizing my commitment to God which then act as efficacious signs of grace…by which divine life is dispensed to us (ref. Catholic Encyclopedia).
  • Strengthening my commitment to God and to the mission of love through daily meditation, contemplation and prayer.
  • Being of service to others as a source of love in all things.

I see none of what I do as contrary to the Christian message, most especially as this message was modeled by Christ. Jesus taught.  He prophesied.  He counseled. He meditated and prayed. He performed ritual.  He led.  He pastored.  He laid on hands for the purpose of healing, expelling demons (fears) and to empower those he taught to do what he had done.

It wasn’t only men whom Jesus empowered to continue his work. The FIRST ordained to continue Jesus’ work was Mary Magdalene (John 20), and she was a woman!  Sadly, the early response to Mary Magdalene’s role as successor to Jesus was ridicule, condemnation and slander.  She immediately went from being Jesus’ co-equal partner, the one who first saw the risen Christ and the one sent forth to share the good news, to adulterous woman, prostitute, whore….in other words….a witch.  What happened to Mary Magdalene two hundred centuries ago has been the burden inflicted upon all women thereafter who have attempted to do what Jesus did and be whom he called them to be.  The message has been clear:

If you are woman called to do the work of Christ, you are not welcome and we will enforce this ban by calling you a witch, a heretic, a whore, a blasphemer, who does this work in the company of Satan.

While it would be easy for me to get on my feminist bandwagon, I find here that I cannot as these accusations of being in the company of Satan go beyond gender. In fact these are the exact same accusations heaped upon Jesus by the self-appointed inquisition of his own time:

When Jesus had driven out a demon, some of the crowd said: “By the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he drives out demons.” Others, to test him, asked him for a sign from heaven. But he knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste and house will fall against house. And if Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that it is by Beelzebul that I drive out demons. If I, then, drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own people drive them out? Therefore they will be your judges. But if it is by the finger of God that I drive out demons, then the Kingdom of God has come upon you. When a strong man fully armed guards his palace, his possessions are safe.

But when one stronger than he attacks and overcomes him, he takes away the armor on which he relied and distributes the spoils. Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

Luke 11: 15-26

Apparently ANYONE who tries to do the work that Jesus did is vulnerable to condemnation. When I pierce through the veil of these accusations I see one thing:

Fear – specifically, the human fear of that which is outside of our control.

Catholic (and most religious) doctrine, wraps life up in a tight little ball. We are told what to believe, what not to believe, what is good and what is evil. Theologians might have the freedom to argue about these beliefs, but the common person sitting in the pew is expected to believe without question. For many, believing without question provides the perceived surety they crave in an otherwise unsure world. The problem is that life CANNOT be wrapped up in a tight little ball for us to control. The truth is there is very little we truly know and even less that we can control. Those who have been called beyond these tightly defined parameters, who are comfortable in the world of the unknown, where life embodies many shades of grey and where freedom is found in ambiguity become a threat to those who cling to the illusion of surety. To the latter, it is easy to think of the former as evil as our presence stirs their fears and the unhealed wounds that cause them to cling to what they think they know. Witches….shit-disturbers, we might be one and the same. J

While my initial response to the emails above was annoyance and my second response was hurt, I can now sit in the compassion of understanding the fears that caused this person to lash out in this way. I am sorry for the unhealed fears that cause them to seek after surety. I am sorry for the fact that my presence has triggered these fears. But even more so I am sorry that they chose not to use the tools that Jesus gave them to heal those fears so that instead of finding separation, they might have found the love that unites us both. In this, there are no witches, there is no inquisition, there are only human beings trying to find peace in an otherwise fearful world.

How the “Unholy Masculine” is Killing Us.

I want to be clear, right from the start, this blog is NOT about men and it is not against men. This blog is about a characteristic and behavior pattern of Western culture that I have come to call “the unholy masculine.” Both women and men are guilty of embodying characteristics and engaging in behaviors consistent with the “unholy masculine,” and THIS is the cause of all that is wrong with Western culture and IT is killing us.

The unholy masculine can be defined as:

Behaviors and characteristics of power and control, ultimately motivated by fear.

The unholy masculine are all the ways in which we attempt to have power over ourselves and/or others through acts of coercion, bullying, manipulating through fear and insecurity (think advertising and the media), trying to “make things happen,” forcing outcomes, agendas, our own will, etc.

The unholy masculine ultimately arises in response to our wholesale rejection of all that we perceive in ourselves as weakness, vulnerability, imperfection, helplessness, powerlessness, etc. Often this rejection of self isn’t even known, but is instead projected onto others, resulting in behavior patterns where we reject “them” (think “the poor,” “the jobless and unemployed,” “homeless,” “disabled,” “sick,” etc.)  because of their “weakness” or “powerlessness”.  The irony is that when we are rejecting others for their “weakness” what we are really rejecting is the weak and vulnerable parts of ourselves, which we then mask with behaviors of power and control.

Let me tell you a little story to help illustrate the subtle and insidious nature of the unholy masculine, as I have experienced it within myself.

As a Type One on the Enneagram, the Perfectionist/Reformer, imperfection is not allowed – specifically, imperfection as I define it. Imperfection in my mind has been anything that has to do with my definition of weakness and includes such things as anxiety, depression, panic attacks, helplessness, neediness, illness.  Sadness, loneliness, and anger have also been included in the soup of what I had/have rejected in myself, and what I therefore rejected in others because I could not accept them in myself. In contrast to the weakness that was not allowed, what was allowed was my definition of perfect….which meant independent (self-sufficient), courageous, smart, strong, and accomplished – specifically accomplished.

If I was accomplishing tasks, achieving my goals, I was perfect and strong. Especially if I was accomplishing these goals in spite of my fears, my insecurities, my sadness, loneliness….and later…anxiety, depression, panic attacks and SHEER EXHAUSTION. For most of my life, I rejected these parts of myself so much that I didn’t even know they existed.  (My Chi Qong master once observed, “Lauri, I sometimes think the only way you are making it from day to day is simply by force of your own will.”  Yep…she had me pegged!)

Accomplishing arose out of Doing, therefore “doing” was “good” and “not doing” was bad. Enjoyment, for the simple sake of enjoyment was also not allowed – because enjoyment did not equal “doing.”  Besides, enjoyment is only allowed after the doing is done, and the “doing” is never done – there is always something else I could/should be doing to accomplish my goals and complete my tasks.

THIS is the UNHOLY MASCULINE – suppressing the parts of myself I had rejected by means of power and control, forcing myself to DO and ACCOMPLISH because this is what I perceived to be of value and what I believed it meant to be perfect.

As it turns out, all of this “DOING” for the sake of “ACCOMPLISHING” was mostly done in opposition to what my Soul actually needed and wanted. On occasion, my Soul would let me know this by casting me into a pit of profound “weakness.”  In high school it was two bouts with mono, in college it was chronic migraines, in midlife, anxiety, depression and panic attacks.  Most recently, it started with a MASSIVE virus that turned into an ear infection leading to vertigo, which then led to anxiety and depression, even panic attacks– the effects of which I am still struggling with today (hint….”struggling” is another manifestation of the unholy masculine).

THIS is the UNHOLY MASCULINE….and I am not the only one guilty of this behavior. In fact, the Unholy Masculine is what is wrong with our culture and it is the Unholy Masculine that is killing us.

  • Every time we act in opposition to our Soul,.
  • Every time we FORCE ourselves or others to do something, through coercion, bullying, manipulating through fear or by triggering insecurities.
  • Every time we JUDGE parts of ourselves as weak, worthless, unworthy, imperfect, bad, and then reject these in ourselves.
  • When we project our judgment of ourselves or our rejection of ourselves onto others.
  • When we bully, intimidate, try to “make something happen,” force ourselves or others into situations that are in opposition to their Soul.
  • When life feels like a struggle, a fight, a war.
  • When our relationships feel like a struggle.
  • Every time we treat ourselves or others in ways that are non-loving or unkind…

We are engaging in the Unholy Masculine.

The key to healing ourselves and therefore our culture of the Unholy Masculine begins with identifying and learning to love all the parts of ourselves we had previously rejected:

  • Our perceived weakness (which often turn out to be our greatest gifts).
  • Our vulnerabilities.
  • Our needs, wants, desires.
  • Our past hurts and unhealed wounds.
  • Our losses, our sorrows and our grief.
  • Our aging, changing bodies.
  • The ways in which our looks don’t measure up to what Victoria’s Secret or GQ Magazine tells us is the ideal.
  • Our mental, physical, emotional and spiritual “illnesses”.
  • Our past traumas, and broken hearts.
  • Our emotions.
  • Our thoughts.
  • The unique way in which our Soul NEEDS to move about this world.

As we come to accept these in ourselves, we come to accept them in others, the result of which is loving behavior toward ourselves and loving behaviors toward others.

In this we transform the unholy masculine to the HOLY MASCULINE – providing, protecting and supporting through kind and loving acts, which is exactly what I am off to do for myself this day. Game of Thrones, Season 3, here I come!

The Price of Waking Up

The Price of Waking Up –

and Why Most Will Choose to Remain Sleeping

I already know that 99% of you who begin reading this post will quickly lose interest, glaze over and return to whatever piece of gossip or tabloid journalism is currently entertaining you and distracting you from the truths you really don’t want to know or see. The other 1% will enthusiastically respond with a “preach it sistah!”  It is for the other 1% that I write this post.

This week, I had a cruel reminder of the price of waking up and why the majority of the population works really hard at defending their right to stay asleep. The answer in short is because if we wake up….we are obligated to do something about the pain, hardship, disorder, violence, fear and hatred in our world.  In other words….we become personally responsible for making different choices in our lives. modeling these choices for others and if we are so-called, being a force for positive change.

If we stay asleep, however, we don’t have to do a thing. Instead, we get to remain in the mindless patterns of familiarity that define our lives.  We get to remain in the status quo that gives us the illusion of safety and security….only because it is known, not necessarily because it is safe or secure.  We don’t have to rock the boat, risk rejection or condemnation, or even respond to another person’s pain.  We get to avoid responsibility, falsely believing that it is someone else’s job, or hoping that if we ignore it long enough, it will simply go away.  The problem is, it doesn’t go away….and as the Buddhists know:

What you resist will persist.

And the more we resist it, the harder it works to be known, usually by coming out sideways in horrible acts with devastating effects.

This is what happened in the Church (and continues to happen). This is why the sex abuse scandal erupted the way it did.  For centuries, the Church looked away as their priests were sexually abusing children and taking advantage of other vulnerable populations, silently hoping it would go away (or worse, priding themselves in their power and their right to have control over others).  In this, they have never had to take responsibility for what CAUSED the sex abuse scandal in the first place – the demonization of the body, sexuality, and the Holy Feminine, an institution built of fear, power and control, guided by the Unholy Masculine.  And finally… that continue to attract and keep underdeveloped men in the priesthood.  The Church needs to wake up…..but they are highly invested in status quo, in their power and wealth and if they actually took responsibility for all that needs to be changed….they risk losing all of this.  What they don’t know is that there is so much more to be gained, if they could only risk being Christ-like – putting the authentic teachings of Jesus to work and being the force of change Jesus calls us to be.  (Thank God for Pope Francis…he at least is trying!)

What is true of the Church is true of every other institution that has its roots in a patriarchal, hierarchical model, based in fear, power and control. Government.  Education.  Healthcare.  Psychology.  Academia.  Banking. Corporations.  Commerce.  Etc. Etc. Etc.  The longer they avoid their own disease, their own shadow, the more it will be coming out sideways (hah…we need only look to the presidential election to see evidence of this.).  Pretend it’s not there, and then we don’t have to do anything about it…..and change is hard…..and we don’t know how to support change….and change scares us.  So, we keep our heads in the sand hoping it will go away on its own or that someone else will clean up the mess.

The longer we look away, however, the larger the pile of debris becomes, and the harder the truth works at being known, being seen and being addressed. As we look away hoping things will go away on their own – our planet is being destroyed, millions of people are living under the constant threat of war, millions are now homeless refugees, people are getting sicker, joblessness and underemployment are at an all-time high, corruption rules our government and corporations, and our children are dying.  None of this will change, in fact, it will only continue to get worse the more we choose to stay asleep.  And for the 99%, this is what they will continue to choose.

The good news is that it only takes a pebble to start an avalanche. As the power of the 1% has ruled our world, it is THE OTHER 1% who have to power to change it.

You know who you are. Thank you for being awake and thank you for being willing to listen to the voice of your soul – a voice crying out in the wilderness speaking to sand , perhaps….but you are listening.  We are listening.  The OTHER 1% are awake.  We are listening.  We are taking personal responsibility and we are working for change.  We are the pebble that starts the avalanche….and the time for the avalanche is NOW!

Satan, the Anti-Christ and the Presidential Election

It may interest you to learn that Satan is not a personal name.  Neither is Satan an external or personal, embodied force whose job it is to tempt us away from the good and into a life of “sin.”  Instead, satan (shatan) is a Hebrew word that means “inner obstacle or adversary.”  Satan arises out of our unhealed wounds and unresolved fears strictly for the purpose of healing and in support of our human journey toward wholeness and self-actualization.  While the opportunities for growth may manifest outside of us, their source is ultimately within.  From this perspective, satan is something to be welcomed as its arrival heralds an opportunity for profound personal growth.

As satan is the adversary and opportunity for growth that arises for each of us individually, the anti-Christ is that which arises out of the collective consciousness.  The arrival of the anti-Christ gives us an opportunity to acknowledge and support the healing of our collective unhealed wounds and unresolved fears.

There have been many times throughout history where an individual has surfaced who embodied the voice of the collective fear and then became that voice, stirring their respective audiences into actions that initially caused great destruction, but ultimately served to bring about profound transformational healing and change.  Jim Jones, Adolf Hitler, Napoleon Bonaparte and Osama Bin Laden are four historical examples of the embodiment of this collective fear, which was then acknowledged and supported in its healing after they were deposed (but sadly, only after much suffering).

In the current political race, there have been many comparisons between some of the presidential candidates and historical anti-Christs. Whether Donald Trump, Jeb Bush, Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, or some other candidate is your personal version of the anti-Christ, I would suggest that it is ultimately NOT about the individual candidate, but is instead about our collective fears and unhealed wounds.  Instead of projecting our collective unhealed wounds onto a particular candidate and allowing their embodiment of this fear to govern our culture and our society, the invitation is to do the even more difficult work of healing these fears and wounds within ourselves.  When we do this, collective healing begins to manifest, making the role of the anti-christ unnecessary, or at the very least, making them powerless over us.

The fears that are being played out in the presidential race are those that have produced a culture governed by power and control (lust), motivated by fears that have manifested through patterns of conspicuous consumption, gluttony and greed.  These long-standing patterns have left the majority of the culture (and the world because of our gluttonous actions – there is a reason the rest of the world hates us!) hungry, poor, sick, unemployed and underemployed, leaving us feeling powerless over those who seem to be making the decision about how we live and rule our lives.

The president, no matter how good he or she is at their job, is not going to change these patterns; neither are our senators or congressmen (non-inclusive language intentional) because at the end of the day, the hierarchical, patriarchal system out of which our government was created, is itself, part of the problem.  (Fear begets fear.  Power begets power.  White male privilege, begets white male privilege.)  The only way in which these unhealed wounds and unresolved fears are going to be healed is by our own actions. It is only by our personal commitment to our individual healing process that the collective fears, and therefore our culture (and the earth), will be healed.  And it is only by our own actions that he or she who might otherwise embody the energy of the anti-christ will be supported in being otherwise, because the embodiment of the anti-christ will no longer be needed.

Visions of a New World and Abraham Lincoln’s Bones

For the sake of the betterment of our world, I am sharing a powerful and (at the time) terrifying dream that I had as a child that has proved itself to be nothing short of prophetic:

One late summer, when I was five or six years old, I was staying in my grandfather’s cabin in the north woods of Minnesota, with my family. It was likely our last visit before the end of the season and before going back to (or starting) school. It was late August, and the weather had already grown cool and the evenings crisp, and on this particular night, a brilliant orange harvest moon hung in the sky.  It was under the glow of the harvest moon that I nestled in beside my sister on the pull-out couch on the sleeping porch, snuggling deep into the flannel and army green sleeping bag that smelled like my grandfather – a rich combination of wool, flannel, bonfires, pine needles, fresh air and cigars. Held in the embrace of this sacred and holy place, I was visited by a powerful dream.

The harvest moon that I had found a beauty to behold gazed down over the entire world and was seen by all from city to farm, forest to stream and everywhere in between. In the dream, I saw the moon from the vantage point of a large city.  As I gazed at the moon, it began to spin, and then it began to spark.  As the moon spun, it threw off sparks and flames, as if it had become like one of those aluminum and metal hand-crank pinwheels – spinning and sparking and destroying itself in the process.

As I gazed at the moon in both horror and wonder, a voice spoke to me, “The end of the world is at hand.” I was obviously frightened by these words and asked “the voice” what I could do to stop it.  “You must go find the bones of Abraham Lincoln dig them up and bring them here to prevent the world from coming to an end.”  The dream continued with me finding, and then leading a group of friends in search for Lincoln’s bones.  In the dream, we looked and looked in all the places where the bones could be and were unable to find them – we looked in Springfield, Illinois, we looked in the woods of Kentucky, we even looked at the Lincoln Memorial.  All the time we search, I felt this overwhelming sense of rightness, but also fear and frustration as Lincoln’s bones continued to elude us, knowing that if we didn’t find them, the world would come to an end.  It was in this state of frustration that I awakened.  I was too afraid to tell anyone about the dream, and to this day, have only shared it with a few.  Until now.

Almost 50 years later, I am now able to interpret this dream and the state of our world has helped me with this interpretation:

The end of the world (as we know it) is here. The new world is being born and it is out of “Lincoln’s Bones” that the new world will be made.

Abraham Lincoln

The world that we have known is that which was built on fear, power, separation and control. This is the world that is dying (and needs to die if we are to survive).  For those who are attached to this world, or who get their power from this world, its end will feel apocalyptic and truly as if the world (their world) is coming to an end – if this is what they choose.

Another choice is possible, however, for those who are willing to do the work of locating and “digging up Lincoln’s bones.” (so to speak)

“Lincoln’s bones” represents all that we have come to associate with our sixteenth president, Abraham Lincoln.

Abraham Lincoln was known to be a man of honesty, integrity, humility, intelligence, and wisdom. He is generally regarded as one who possessed a deep sense of justice, who was able to reason and discern his own truth and act on that truth; who was self-motivated and self-directed. He was not known to be easily swayed by opinion or political pressure.  His ultimate gift was in bringing together that which had been separated and in repairing the breach.

This is who we are called to be and what we are called to do in bringing forth the new world – a world no longer established on the old models of fear, separation, power and control, but one built on the solid foundation of honesty, integrity, knowledge and wisdom where we come together as a world of brothers and sisters, repairing the breach of 5000 years of separation.   For those who are not willing to make this choice, the world they are clinging to is consuming itself in a painful and fiery death.

Birthing Something New – Fear of Change

We are in the midst of the most incredible journey involving all of humanity….all of creation in fact. We are in the midst of witnessing to and participating in CREATION as it is birthing something new. The new that is being born is both outside of us and within us, but is ultimately unfolding out of the depths of our own consciousness….and it is a wonder to behold.

Use donation button to the right as a way of supporting Authentic Freedom Academy and the services we freely offer, including this blog.

What is being born is nothing less than a NEW WORLD! A completely new world the likes of which we have NEVER experienced (not in our human incarnations anyway!). We are quite literally creating something out of nothing and doing so without a map, without a guide, without a blueprint and without a business or strategic plan. There can be no plan because what we are creating is not of this world, neither is it three-dimensional in its nature, therefore it cannot be seen or touched. Instead, what we are creating is of the fifth dimension where there is no discernable form because in the fifth dimension, all is one, unitive and harmonious – a far cry from the duality that defines the 3D world.

So, how are we supposed to help this creation along if we can’t see or touch it and if there is no plan? This is exactly the point – there is NOTHING we can or should be doing. The new world is being born THROUGH us, not because of us or because of our efforts (more on this in a bit). Instead, it is our job to get out of the say (this is our part of the doing) and ALLOW the new world to be born. The challenging part of this process is that we CLING to what we know. We find perceived security in feeling as if we are in control and as if we have control. But the real truth of the new world being born is that WE ARE NOT IN CONTROL and the more we cling and the more we strive after control, the more difficult this journey will be for us. We know that we are clinging or trying to control things when we feel ANXIETY (or sheer panic which is often the case!). Anxiety and panic are signaling to us that we are clinging and trying to control and are an invitation to enter into some DEEP SELF CARE!

BE GENTLE WITH OURSELVES! The world is changing. It is changing through us. When anxiety, worry, fear, panic, compulsive planning, anticipatory thoughts, etc. plague us, this is an invitation to STOP. Ask ourselves the question, “What is my fear?” Then give loving care and reassurance to our 3D/fearful selves that this fear is simply the fear of CHANGE. NEW and magnificent things are coming. A world and a life far beyond our wildest dreams. And we are afraid of what this change might mean for us. Breathe into the fear and allow ourselves to feel it and to know that the fear is arising because something MAGNIFICENT is about to happen. Breathe into the fear and breath out love.   LOVE ourselves in the face of our fear. LOVE ourselves in the face of change. LOVE ourselves for wanting to cling and wanting to control. LOVE LOVE LOVE ourselves for being human and LOVE the 3D part of ourselves that knows it is dying. For this is our greatest fear. The 3D self (the one defined by separation, duality and fear) is in its final death throes and like a physical body that resists its physical death (even when the spirit is VERY willing), the 3D self is clinging to life. As they do in hospice care, administer a little spiritual Lorazepam as in the exercise above. Acknowledge that the 3D self is dying. Give it something for the anxiety (in this case loving care and the breathing exercise mentioned above), and sit beside it giving it comfort as it lets go of this life so as to be welcomed into the new.

And then, as it the journey of physical death, let the spirit lead. In the depths of our soul, in the center of our hearts WE KNOW. We know where we are going. We know what is to come after the death of the 3D self and the 3D world. We know that what is coming after the life that we currently know is more magnificent then we could possibly imagine. Our hearts and our souls KNOW! If we need a blueprint or a plan, let this be it! Let our hearts be the guides and when the fearful mind steps in (which it will) love it in its fear then return our attention to our hearts. For our hearts know where it is taking us – “There’s no place like home.”

Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired – Virtual Church Service

The Authentic Freedom Virtual Church Service for Sunday, December 7, 2014 is LIVE.

The theme of this week’s service is “I’m TIRED!  Aren’t you tired?”  Specifically of a world rooted in fear, being controlled by manipulation and power?  I know I am!  The good news is that we have the freedom to CHOOSE what kind of world we live in.  The choice begins with ourselves.  When we choose love instead of fear, our world changes and the world changes with us.

Servant Leadership – Virtual Church Service

The Authentic Freedom Virtual Church service for Sunday, August 31, 2014 is LIVE.  The theme this week is servant leadership…and what that REALLY looks like.  Servant leadership is NOT about establishing our positions of authority, power or control, neither is it about lauding, defending, or throwing around our positions of power.  Instead, servant leadership is about using our gifts to empower others to realize their own greatness.  Servant leadership is about bottom up leadership.  It is about humility.  It is about serving others.  It is about being the wings upon which others may learn how to fly.

On a personal note, this must be a really hot topic for me as evidenced in the dream I had last night.  In the dream, I was applying for a professional position within a local religious organization.  I was told that I had been rejected for the position because I was known to hang out with the “unsavory” people of Oshkosh – the poor, homeless, mentally ill, hippies, rejects, etc. etc. etc. etc.  In the dream, I completely freaked out….and in very colorful language told them what I thought about their decision.  What did they think Jesus did?  I asked.  In the dream, I did not win the argument.  Neither do I believe I will win it here….at least not with those attached to their positions of authority.  But that’s ok….because those are not the ones I am called to serve.  Instead, I am called to serve those who find themselves without a spiritual home.  At Authentic Freedom and the Superhero Academy, you are welcome here!

You can attend this week’s service HERE.

He Who Holds the Gold

Today’s blog continues the discussion about authority, and specifically addresses the question:  Who will actually help to bring about change?  In short – it will NOT be the one who currently holds the gold.

He who holds the gold…

There is an old saying, “He who holds the gold makes the rules.”  Historically, there has been something very true about this statement.  Those with power and control are those making the rules.  We, the peons who work our butts off so that those in power can remain in power, are then expected to KEEP QUIET, DO WHAT WE ARE TOLD, SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP.  In the U.S., for example,  our government was initially set up so that we, the peons, would actually have power and control through the work of the officials we elect to represent us in policy making decisions.  Well…..those days are long gone!  These days are so long gone, in fact, that it isn’t even our elected officials who are making the decisions, but powerful corporations and special interest groups who are coercing and sometimes paying for decisions to be made in their interest….not in the interest of the American people, and surely not in the interest of the larger global community.

Too much to lose

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see that the rules generated by those holding the gold are no longer working. In fact, if we continue on the current trajectory the very survival of our species is in question. This is true in all institutional arrangements – government, corporate, religious, education, medicine, banking, etc. And, this current arrangement which is working really well for those in power and control, but not working at all for the general population or the larger global community, is not about to change – not at the hands of those in power and control anyway.  Those who are currently holding the gold have too much to lose because in the current paradigm, they are (typically the only) the ones reaping the benefits of a hierarchical/patriarchal institutional structure ruling mostly through intimidation and fear.  (note, this intimidation and fear can be very subtle and insidious…..have you paid attention to advertising for example, all designed to make us feel we aren’t enough, don’t have enough, and that we won’t be loved and accepted if we don’t have said advertised product.)

The Power of a few (who are in fact, the majority)

I am not without hope, however.  For the REAL power, you see, is in OUR hands.  “The tired, the poor, the huddled masses,” and masses we are.  We, the peons, far outnumber those who are in power.  The problem is that we have remained silent for far too long!  We have bought into the manipulations of those in power and control and in doing so, we have lost our voice.  Well, we don’t need to be silent any longer.  In fact, our very survival depends on our ability to find our voices and SPEAK on behalf of the real needs of our world.  What we don’t need is to know what Kim Kardashian wore to the grocery today, the “next best Apple device,” the “guaranteed weight loss cure,” to “lose ten years off our face through expensive and unnecessary cosmetic surgery.”  We also don’t need to wage another war, plant another crop laden with genetically altered seeds, kill another honeybee, destroy another piece of land through fracking, kill off another species or allow another human being to go hungry or homeless.  Instead, what we need are:

1) to feel safe in our world

2) to discover our own uniquely creative contribution to bettering our world and finding fulfillment through this contribution

3) to feel empowered toward making positive change

4) to know that we are loved and accepted for who we are

5) to have the freedom to express our truths

6) to feel confident in making prudent decisions reflective of our own unique place in the world

7) to know that we are not alone

It starts with you

The process of facilitating positive change in the world begins with ourselves.  First, through our own process of self-discovery and self-actualization, we need to find the fulfillment of the above needs within ourselves.  Once we have identified our own uniquely creative gifts, THEN it is our job to SHARE THEM.  And when we all come together in sharing our uniquely creative gifts, change can’t help but happen.  The good news is that we have a whole history of positive change movements led by authentically powerful leaders who have first done this inner work themselves, and then empowered others to do the same – St. Francis of Assisi, Teresa of Avila, Martin Luther, Dorothy Day, Oscar Romero, Mother Teresa, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr. oh yeah….the Buddha, Moses, Mohammed, Jesus, etc. etc. etc.  Positive change starts with one person taking care of their own inner needs, then inviting others to do the same.  And sometimes, when a group of people gather with this common intention….amazing things start to happen and then suddenly someone else is holding the gold and generously sharing it with others.

Battling Guilt Demons

Today’s blog explores the nature of guilt, how to recognize guilt at play and tools for vanquishing the guilt demons!  ARGH!

The Best Laid Plans of Mice and Daughters

Back from my blogging sabbatical so that I could help with the needs of my parents after my dad’s kidney transplant.  YEAH RIGHT!  As the universe would have it, instead of going to Minneapolis as planned, I got sidelined by my dad’s (yes, you read that correctly) annual upper respiratory, sinus, allergy, cough, sickness.  Apparently my Spirit and my dad’s Spirit made an arrangement whereby I would take on his usual sickness so that he could be healthy for his kidney transplant (well, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.).  So, instead of going to Minneapolis, I was told to stay home, and then I had to face SEVEN whole days with NO PLANS, no obligations, no projects, NO KIDS!   For a “J” on the Myers-Briggs SEVEN days with no plans is a sentence akin to an eternity in hell.  ARGH!!!!!!   If my head had been screwed on straight, I would have welcomed these seven days as an opportunity to retreat, reflect, write and play.  And I tried, I really tried to make these past seven days just that……and all would have gone just fine if it hadn’t been for those DARN guilt demons!  ARGH!!!!

Enter Sandman   (click link for a little mood music!  :))

So, I’m trying to move through my seven day universe-imposed retreat, hoping to rest, reflect, play, create, write, and simply be.  And just as I thought I was getting into the swing of NO PLANS, NO KIDS…..enter SANDMAN…….aka  The Demons of Guilt.  It would have been ok if it had only been one demon…you know, the one that says, “You really should be doing something productive.”  Instead….it was guilt in LEGIONS!   Like a swarm of apocalyptic locusts, they fell upon me in legions whispering and taunting in my ears:

  • You are a bad mom for taking seven days away from your kids
  • Your a worse daughter for getting sick and missing your dad’s surgery and for not being there to help your mom!!!!!
  • You are lazy for doing nothing
  • Your business won’t grow and you won’t make any money if you don’t do something toward that effort
  • What good is it to take time to journal, pen poetry, write short stories…..that won’t make you any money
  • Skipping yoga again?????  Your yoga teacher will be angry or disappointed in you
  • You know you will go to hell for skipping mass on Thursday, or worse for sleeping through meditation
  • You slept until 9:30?   Shame shame shame
  • You should be cleaning your house, doing chores, getting caught up on household projects
  • The leaves aren’t going to rake themselves
  • How are you going to pay for Christmas if you take a week off of work?

Got the picture?????

Guilt and its Evil Disguises

But here is the worse part……I didn’t even know I was being beseiged by guilt.  What I felt instead was restlessness, impatience, irritation, frustration, maybe a little boredom and loneliness.  And mixed in with these feelings the sensation that there was something or someone out there causing me these feelings…..I wanted like heck to point my accusatory finger at that “person” or “thing” that was causing this disturbance of the normal peaceful contentment I strive to know in my day to day life and either exact punishment or extract that “thing” that was causing so much irritation.  It wasn’t until this afternoon that I recognized what I had been battling was guilt…..and I found out in the strangest of ways.  I won’t go into the gory details, but the words that showed up alerting me to guilt’s malicious attack were these:

  • You are a bad mom because your whole entire life does not revolve around your children’s interests.

ARRRGGGGGHHHHHHHH    There it is, that dang SHOULD voice…..the outside perceived authority that tries to tell us that our needs are of no value and that it is our job to make everyone else happy before even thinking of what we might need for ourselves.  YIKES!

Guilt’s Evil Intent

There it was.  Guilt in all its glory…..AGAIN….trying to keep me from the path of my highest good.  For in truth….this is guilt’s ONE and ONLY purpose.  As I tell my clients, guilt serves absolutely NO redeeming purpose.  Guilt is the litany of “shoulds” from a controlling and power-driven outside perceived authority (or worse yet, our own inner critic) that wants to keep us from knowing our truest self which is loving, joyful and content.  Guilt keeps us from naming and claiming our own needs and does so by trying to tell us it is our job to make other people happy.  So, now I stand in defiance, thumbing my nose at guilt, proclaiming my own needs:

  • to get well
  • to take care of myself when I’m sick
  • to take time out to simply be
  • to play
  • to play
  • to play (As a recovering perfectionist, I needs LOTS of reminders to play)
  • to allow someone to take care of my needs for a change
  • to enjoy the company of friends
  • to read, reflect, write, create
  • etc.

Now, I encourage you to do the same!!!!

How does guilt show up in your own life?

Where are you tempted to forgo tending to your own needs?

How does guilt disguise itself in your life?
