Awaken Equip Empower

The greatest professional challenge I have faced is trying to explain to people what I do for a living.  When I offer titles like, Spiritual Director, Spiritual Counselor, Hands-on-Healer, Human Development Expert, Teacher, Interfaith Minister, I mostly get met with a blank stare.  When I boldly proclaim Author, people mostly cringe.  So…in today’s blog, I will try to explain what I, Lauri Ann Lumby, actually do for a living and WHY the services I provide might be of benefit to you!

Midwife to your Soul

This is the part of my job that is completely invisible, intangible, defies measurement or explanation, and yet, it is a gift I have that is intimately part of my call, and one I can no longer deny.  In my presence, people wake up.  They wake up to their own longing, the creative call within them, the desire to know peace, love, joy and the hunger to use their gifts in service to the betterment of the world.  Under my gaze and simply by being in my presence, people wake up.  Now….with that, there are one of two responses – they either stay and grow, or they run away screaming in fear.  The stay and grow part is really cool as I then have the opportunity to be witness to the excitement that happens in the other in the discovery of their gift and their call.  The running away in fear piece – that’s a weird one.  Fortunately, I no longer take it personally, but it is only a little unsettling when I suddenly become the “enemy” as a projection of their own unacknowledged fear.

Here’s the fun part.  When people awaken and they stay, they get to go on a treasure hunt, and I have the profound gift of being their guide.  I get to help them uncover their gifts, identify their passions and explore the call of their soul – the uniquely creative way in which they have been gifted to find meaning and purpose in the world and to find fulfillment in sharing this gift in service to the betterment of the world. How fun is that?  There are many tools I use to help people in this search – mindfulness and creativity practices, temperament and personality assessments, one-on-one counseling and mentoring.

This is the stage where things get a little messy.  The closer we get to our gifts and our call, the harder the ego (our false self) tries to work against us.  The ego likes same, status quo, and the harnessing of our gifts almost always means SIGNIFICANT change.  So as we approach our gifts, the ego throws all kinds of obstacles in our path – fear, anxiety, past hurts, the unhealed and unrealized parts of ourselves, the inner critic, the negative messages we subconsciously or consciously took on from others, the parts of ourselves we have rejected, suppressed, repressed, etc.  The ego does this both from within us and from outside of us.  My job is to help my clients and students identify the false self at work and to offer sound practices for freeing themselves from these obstacles.  These practices include movement, mindfulness, meditation, shamanic soul retrieval practices, hands-on-healing, the Authentic Freedom protocol which I developed, and others.  The goal of the Empower stage of the process is to do just that – EMPOWER.  I firmly believe and have come to see that my job is to make TEACHERS, not enable followers.  As such, my greatest joy is when one of my clients or students is ready to leave the nest and fly on their own….it is in this moment that I know I have accomplished my task, and that they have fully and freely birthed their own soul.  This, indeed, is my greatest joy!

The Consequence of Denying our Gifts and our Call

When we deny the gifts God has given us and the call to be a vessel of God’s love, peace, joy, healing, etc. in the world, we suffer – not because God is punishing us, but as a natural consequence of denying our gifts, our truth and our call.  In this week’s Agape meditation newsletter, supplement to the Authentic Freedom Virtual Church, find support for overcoming the fears that keep you from living your truth.

Scripture Reading:

Jesus told his disciples this parable: “A man going on a journey called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them. To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one– to each according to his ability. Then he went away. Immediately the one who received five talents went and traded with them, and made another five. Likewise, the one who received two made another two. But the man who received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and buried his master’s money. After a long time the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them. The one who had received five talents came forward bringing the additional five. He said, ‘Master, you gave me five talents. See, I have made five more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master’s joy.’ Then the one who had received two talents also came forward and said, ‘Master, you gave me two talents. See, I have made two more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master’s joy.’ Then the one who had received the one talent came forward and said, ‘Master, I knew you were a demanding person, harvesting where you did not plant and gathering where you did not scatter; so out of fear I went off and buried your talent in the ground. Here it is back.’ His master said to him in reply, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I did not plant and gather where I did not scatter? Should you not then have put my money in the bank so that I could have got it back with interest on my return? Now then! Take the talent from him and give it to the one with ten. For to everyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And throw this useless servant into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.'”

The Consequence of Ignoring our Gifts

“For to everyone who has, more will be given … but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”

Once upon a time, there was a young woman from, Bingen, a town along the Rhine. She was given the gift of hearing and knowing the voice of God. Hildegard was her name. Frightened of this voice that asked her to write about God, about God’s healing gifts, about God’s kingdom and most importantly, about God’s love, she held this voice at bay. The voice continued to pursue her while she begged for its silence. The voice, however, would not be silenced. Refusing to act upon the voice’s request, Hildegard began to experience excruciating pain in her head along with blinding and flashing lights. The priests and doctors knew not how to alleviate her pain. She took to bed, and there she remained for months at a time. In her convalescence, the voices continued. Finally, she relented, asking for paper, quill and ink, and began to record what she heard and saw. Immediately, her pain and the blinding lights ceased. (To learn more about St. Hildegard of Bingen, check out this Wiki link:

St. Hildegard of Bingen provides the perfect example of what happens when we ignore or deny the gifts God has given us. Her illness was not punishment for denying her gifts and her call, but instead, are the natural consequence of ignoring the voice of God (in her case literally), within us.

Each and every one of us has been uniquely gifted by God and is uniquely called to be a vessel through which God’s love, peace, joy, healing, contentment, guidance and truth are to be revealed in the world. When we take the time to discover, cultivate and eventually share these gifts, we know peace, contentment, fulfillment and joy. When we ignore, suppress, repress, deny these gifts and their call, we experience anxiousness, discontent, frustration, anger, sorrow, and even mental and physical pain – again, not as punishment but as a natural consequence for denying the voice of God within us.

How have you taken time to discover, cultivate and share the gifts God has given you?

How have you suppressed, denied, ignored, repressed the gifts and the call God has given you? What have been the consequences of ignoring God’s voice?

Spiritual Practices – Connecting with Gift

In this week’s spiritual practice, we acknowledge the sacral chakra (the energy center located in the center of our lower abdomen) as the center of creativity. The awareness and call of our creative gifts are housed in this energy center. In this practice, you will engage the “laying on of hands” as a practice for creating a safe space in which your gifts may emerge so that you may begin (or continue) the work of nurturing and cultivating these gifts.

Sit in silence, or with meditative music playing in the background.

Rub your hands together vigorously to stimulate the flow of energy and to create warmth.

Rest your hands, palm down, on your lower abdomen.

Breathe as you keep your hands on your abdomen.

Maintain an intention of safety, openness and allowing as you continue to breathe while resting your hands on your abdomen.

Imagine that you are creating space for your gifts to reveal themselves to you.

Be attentive to any thoughts, feelings, images, emotions that may arise as you continue to hold your hands on your abdomen.

Continue this practice for 20-30 minutes.

Record any thoughts, feelings, insights received, etc. in your journal or notebook.

Authentic Freedom

In Authentic Freedom, we acknowledge fear as the obstacle to living as our most authentic self – the person that God made us to be in the fullness of our human potential. The second spiritual fear – I will not be able to bring forth life that will persist is the specific fear that prevents us from identifying, cultivating and eventually sharing our most authentic self. Through Authentic Freedom, we are reminded of the sacred truth – that each of us is uniquely and creatively gifted by God to be God’s love (peace, joy, guidance, healing, etc.) in the world and that when we discover, cultivate and share this giftedness (in service to the betterment of the world), we experience peace, contentment and fulfillment and the world, in turn, becomes a better place.

In short – what are you waiting for?

Lauri Ann Lumby provides support in helping you to awaken to your gifts and your call, and provides the tools through which you can nurture and be empowered in sharing these gifts.  Contact Lauri for a private session (920) 230-1313 or

CHANGEMAKERS WAKE UP. It’s time to make a new world!

(Psst……Song of the Beloved, the Gospel According to Mary Magdalene is available NOW.  Check it out HERE.)  Now on to today’s blog!

Have you felt like you were here for a reason, but perhaps didn’t know what that reason was?  Do you feel like you are here to change the world, but you don’t know how?  Have you struggled to fit in, often feeling like you were very different from the people you know (and even your family)?  Have you felt somewhat alone with in these thoughts? If so….YOU ARE NOT ALONE.  In fact, you are in really good company, there are lots of other people like you, we are finding each other and we are getting ready to CREATE A NEW WORLD!

Who are the changemakers?  If you are reading this blog, you are likely a changemaker (aka superhero, shitdisturber, rebel, discontent, mystic, starchild, starseed, starborne) and you are in really good company.  Changemakers are those who were born with the inherent gifts and a deep inner call to make the world a better place.  If you are a changemaker, you probably know it…..and WE NEED YOUR HELP because the world as we know it is coming to an end (THANK GOD!) and a new world is waiting to be born!

Politics and End times

If the most recent election is any sign of approaching end times, I don’t know what is.  Positions purchased by corporations.  The whole thing is rigged.  We no longer have a government by the people, for the people.  Instead, we have a government by greedy corporations for the sake of greedy corporations and we don’t need to look very far to see who benefits from this arrangement – healthcare corporations, academic institutions, pharmaceutical companies, Big oil, agricultural companies who are trying to make us sick (if not dead) through the alteration of our food stocks.  Big business benefits and the politicians who are in their pockets while the rest of the country is sick, unemployed and dying.  Something has to change!

Enter the Changemakers

We are a small voice, but we are getting louder.  No longer content to be obedient and do what we are told.  No longer content to live in a world of fear.  No longer content to watch our brothers and sisters toil away in crappy jobs for poverty wages.  No longer yearning after “The Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous,” or wanting what we see on MTV Cribs.  Tired of watching education, healthcare and government flushing themselves down the toilet as we get dumber, sicker and poorer.  Changemakers know it is TIME FOR A NEW WORLD!

The Key to Creating Change

The key to creating change, for making a new world is SELF KNOWLEDGE!  When we come to know ourselves – our TRUE SELVES – we know how we are uniquely gifted to not only find fulfillment in our own lives, but how we are called to contribute to the creation of the New World.  We grow in self- knowledge by being open to this search, and by finding the right kind of support.  This is where I come in.  During a recent gathering of the Superhero Academy,   I was reminded of my own unique giftedness and call – to Awaken, Equip and Empower CHANGEMAKERS (aka Superheroes).  I accomplish this task through writing (blogs, inspirational newsletters and books), one-on-one mentoring, classes and workshops.  If you are interested in harnessing your desire to MAKE A NEW WORLD, and haven’t acted yet, call (920) 230-1313 or email today to start that journey.  We need your help in CREATING a new world!

Remembering our Mission and our Purpose

On the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and as we give honor to his work and his civil rights legacy, we are invited to reflect on our own call to action.  What is the purpose and mission to which we are called and through which we are empowered to serve the betterment of our world?

The Book of Remembrance

The prophet Malachi spoke of the Book of Remembrance in which God wrote about all those who revered the Lord (Malachi 3:16).  Malachi wrote of this Book of Remembrance during a time and within a culture where people believed themselves to be separate from God and who believed in a God of judgment and wrath.  Malachi’s understanding of the Book of Remembrance was limited by the veil of separation which seemed to stand between himself and God. We now live in a time where the veil of separation is falling away and in which we are invited to remember our Oneness with the God of love and compassion through whom, in whom, and for whom we have been made. As such, The Book of Remembrance is available to us in a way that was not possible before and through which we will be awakened to our unique mission of love that is meant to be made manifest at this unique and special time in the history of humankind.

Remembering our Purpose

In The Book of Remembrance is written the Divine account about who we are made to be – our Divine purpose and our Divine mission in this life, on this planet and in this universe.  Within the Book of Remembrance is the written record of the uniquely creative way in which we have been gifted to find meaning, purpose and fulfillment in this life and the way in which we are called to contribute to the betterment of all of creation.  Each and every one of us is written into this book and each and every one of us has access to The Book of Remembrance so that we can become the people God made us to be, thereby fulfilling our mission on this planet and God’s mission through us.  It is in the simple reading of the Book of Remembrance that we come to REMEMBER who God made us to be and it is in the simple reading of the Book of Remembrance that we become the person God made us to be.

Accessing the Book of Remembrance

If you desire to access The Book of Remembrance, the following meditation will provide you with the means to do so:

1) Set aside a time to be silent.  Find a comfortable place to sit.  Turn off all potential distractions (TV, radio, phones, etc.).  Close your eyes and draw your attention to your breathing.  Breathe slowly and mindfully, keeping your attention on your breath.  If your mind wanders, bring it back to the breath.

2) As you continue to breathe, become aware of your body and mind settling into a place of peaceful calm.  As you settle into this place of peacefulness, ask God for permission to read the Book of Remembrance, in a way that is for your highest good.

3) Imagine an ancient and sacred text being placed in your open hands.  Make note of the details of the book – its size, color, the appearance of the pages and the text written on the page.  Offer a prayer of gratitude for the ability and readiness to receiving the Remembrance that is in your highest good at this place in your journey.

4) Allow yourself to “read” what is written for you in the Book of Remembrance.  (Note, you may not be able to read the text as it might be composed in symbols or in a language you do not understand.  Trust that you are able to read it regardless.)  As you read, KNOW that in the reading you are REMEMBERING your Divine purpose, your Divine mission and the uniquely creative way in which you have been gifted to find meaning, purpose and fulfillment in your life and through which you are being called to serve the betterment of the universe.  In addition, KNOW that in the reading you are being empowered to BE the person God made you to be.

5) After you have read and feel as if the reading is complete.  Imagine that you are returning the book to where it came from.  Offer a prayer of thanks and trust that what you received in the reading will be made manifest in your life.

6) Return to The Book of Remembrance through this meditation again and again trusting that with each new reading, more is being Remembered and being made manifest in your life.

This blog is offered free of charge so that it will be available and accessible to all who need it.  If you have found this blog to be meaningful and supportive of your own journey of awakening and empowerment, please consider making a donation (donation button in the right sidebar menu) to this site in support of the work provided here.  Thank you.

I Am the Magdalene

Today, I give witness to the mission I am called to accomplish in this life.  As you read these words, I invite you to reflect on how you are being called to be a vessel through which God’s love is made manifest in our world and under whose influence are you called to do so?

Mary Magdalene, by Robert Lenz

I AM the Magdalene

I am the Magdalene – this is what I am called to embody.  Called to be a vessel through which Jesus’ message of love is shared in the world, continuing his mission as he has called me to do.  Confident, uncompromising, strictly adhering to the truth of Oneness that Jesus came to reveal.

  • Through word and witness, teaching and preaching and by living Jesus’ law of love through devotion and prayer,  works of healing and counsel.
  • Modeling the same commitment to contemplative prayer that Jesus embraced – the vehicle through which he came to know his own Oneness with God and the tool he shared to help others come to know this truth.
  • Helping others find healing of the seven demons of fear that reinforce our perceived separation from God so that we may once again live in the peace and joy that God intended.
  • Guided by the Inner Voice of the Divine that speak truth to the heart.
  • Confident in God’s loving counsel.
  • Uncompromising in adherence to that Inner Voice.
  • Moving in Compassion and Love for all.
  • Patient and Trusting in Divine Providence.
  • On-Fire with God’s Love.
  • With Christ as my Beloved to accompany me.

I am the Magdalene, I in her, and she in me.

Prophet and Teacher

Today’s blog discusses the process of discernment, specificially as it relates to purpose, vocation and call.  How do we know the way in which we are uniquely gifted to reveal God in the world?

Calling it Quits?

The first half of 2012 has been a DOOZY!  Starting with three professional situations that pulled the rug out from beneath my feet leaving me breathless and wondering if I should simply close up shop and go get a job at Target.  Fortunately, I knew better than to make any hasty decisions and entered into this as a time of healing and prayerful discernment.  It has not been an easy process as my normal sources of income dried up and I was forced to REALLY TRUST that God would provide for my needs – which God has in strange, mysterious, unexpected, and sometimes really uncomfortable ways.  I offer a profound prayer of thanksgiving while at the same time not wishing this kind of radical trust on anyone!  There have been many times in the past six months when I have wondered why I do the work that I do and if anyone really gives a damn (that’s my inner martyr speaking).  More specifically, after struggling for 8 years to make a living in this crazy non-descript world of Contemplative Progressive Catholic Christian something or other, I have had to ask if making a living is even possible which then brings me back to the Target idea.  (FYI…..I’m not ready to give up just yet…….there is something brewing in my big iron pot that might just blow the lid off my world and your world too!   More on that soon!)

Double Double Toil and Trouble

As I have been processing the events of earlier this year and watching my normal sources of income disappear, I have placed all of this into the black cauldron of discernment.  I have allowed these observations, along with any other ideas, insights, thoughts, dreams, hopes, guidance, suggestions, etc. etc. etc. that want to get stirred in my pot for examination, scrutiny, questioning, contemplation and prayer.  As the cauldron has been bubbling, certain things have simply evaporated away as untruths, some are still sitting in the “I don’t know yet” part of the soup and a few have risen to the top as clear and true. One of the ways in which I identify the “clear and true” things is the ease with which they have come forth and the ease of energy within me to give myself to it.

The Clear and the True

In yesterday’s blog, Behold I Make All Things New, I revealed one of those things that have surfaced as “clear and true” – the gift and call to be prophet.  There are two other items that presented themselves this summer that have proved to be absolutely effortless, complete with all of the practical supports I needed to accomplish these tasks.  The first of these is around the novel I am hoping to complete this summer and publish this fall:  Song of the Beloved – a memoire of Mary called Magdalene.  The second is about teaching.  With virtually no effort on my part, I have had the opportunity to share my Living in Freedom class with an amazing group of people who have found healing, insight and understanding about themselves through the work they have done in this class.  YAY!

Which Brings me Back to Teaching!!!!!

Teaching, it seems, is the core and the connecting thread and perhaps the ONE purpose, vocation, call that has been trying to get my attention all along.  (actually, it has never really lost my attention, I was just busy thinking of myself as a healer or the next great Anne Rice or J.K. Rowlings to really see it clearly.)  When I examine all the work that I do:  spiritual direction, reiki, writing, leading prayer, they really all point to and arise out of teaching.  And what am I teaching?  In a nutshell, I hope that I am teaching people to REMEMBER the LOVE that they are.  Because at the end of the day, this is all we really want and all we really need.  As I sit with this clearer and truer picture of “Lauri as teacher,” my heart starts to sing and all kinds of really cool ideas spring forth about how I might better accomplish this vocation (through God of course!) in a way that meets a larger audience.  Maybe I can skip the red shirt and khaki pants afterall!

Where is God inviting you into discernment?

What is occupying your revolving door?

What is seeking to be discarded and what is rising to the top as “clear and true”?

You Have Been Called

Today’s blog continues the discussion on Divine Call.  How are you called to be a vessel through which Love is known in this world?

Thus says the Lord,

Here is my servant whom I uphold,

my chosen one with whom I am pleased…

I, the Lord, have called you for the victory of justice,

I have grasped you by the hand;

I formed you, and set you as a covenant of the people, a light for the nations,

to open the eyes of the blind,

to bring out prisoners from confinement,

and from the dungeon those who live in darkness.

Isaiah 42: 1, 6-7

Today’s blog is more of a reflection activity than an actual “blog.”  I invite you to slowly and prayerfully read the scripture passage above, imagining that these are God’s words FOR YOU!  Imagine that these words are being addressed to you personally, that you ARE the servant with whom God is pleased.  Now imagine that you are the one being called for the victory of justice, to be a light of peace to the nations, to open the eyes of the blind, to set prisoners free and to lead people out of darkness.   Because guess what?   YOU ARE that person… are each and every one of us.  Now, in your notebook or journal or on a random piece of paper, write down how you feel about this call.  How, specifically, are you being called to live out this call?  How are you already living out that call?

Humble Gratitude

This is another day of gratitude to YOU……my blog readers!  I have recently received some VERY GENEROUS donations to my ministry from readers of this blog.  These donations allow me to continue to offer this blog free of charge, but more importantly, it is donations such as these that allow me to continue to offer my programs and services (Spiritual Direction and Hands-on Healing) to my clients regardless of their ability to pay.

I believe so much in the work that I do, and have seen the results in my clients and students, that I did not want these benefits to be accessible only to those who have the means to pay.  I also believe that the gifts I have, as well as the call, have both been Divinely guided and that in the end, it is God doing the work….not me.  As such, it has always been my policy to ask people to pay only what they are able.  Some are able to pay my suggested fees, many are not.  As such, a lot of the work I do is either in trade, at a greatly discounted rate, or completely pro-bono.  I have trusted that in doing this God would provide and that my own financial needs would be met so that I could not only continue in this ministry, but continue to offer my programs and services to anyone and everyone who needs them.  Donations that I receive to this ministry allow me to continue my commitment to this ministry and to my current pricing arrangements.

So…..THANK YOU for your generous donations and know that I accept them in humble gratitude and wonder.
