From Fear to Magic

What appears to be chaos, disorder and destruction is simply our new world being born.  When we get out of our mind, and into our hearts, a whole other story is being told.  And it is a story of MAGIC!

Where Universes are Being Made

The world beyond union is where I’m being called.

Beyond the place of “We Are One.”

Beyond the idea of “Love.”

Instead, this is where we are not only

One with God

One with Love

One with Truth –

We ARE God

We ARE Love

We ARE Truth

We are darkness.

We are light.

We are all that is and all that is not.

Beyond even “I Am” or “I am That”

Here, “I become.”  “I create.”

Bringing forth out of Nothing

That which was once only a dream, an imagining, or an idea of the mind.

The effortless, seemless, unfolding of:

NO-THING into SOME-THING

The place where universes are created…

A universe of our own making.

Brought forth from

All the seeds we’ve planted

All the darkness we’ve transformed

All we have suffered

All we have endured

And all we’ve celebrated with wonder, joy and thanksgiving.

It is “the realization of things hoped for, and evidence of things unseen.”

Pure and simple – it is magic.

After We Destroy Ourselves – Reflections on a Dying World

After We Destroy Ourselves

Copyright Lauri Ann Lumby

Today I’m hearing (and feeling) the cries of the world.

Too much death.

Too much violence.

Too much destruction –

and not enough people who care.

Humanity looking away as another father buries his son –

Turning a deaf ear to the plaintive wails of the mother

who lost her child to the darkness of this world.

The world is burning and no one cares.

Except those who will profit from the flames –

White men wreaking havoc in a world where they don’t belong.

A world poisoned by greed,

Made toxic by lust – and not just of the sexual kind.

Man’s unbridled quest for power and ownership

of a world that belongs to no one –

Least of all them.

While humanity cries, Mother Earth is silent –

She has taken matters into her own hands.

“If these humans can’t care for me as I have cared for them….

Then they’ve got to go.

Goodbye stupid humans.

This experiment has failed.”

I wouldn’t blame Her if She shifted her poles and simply shook us free.

Starting over after the damage man has done has healed.

Earth always wins.

Humanity is an ignorant, selfish, self-centered species.

After 200,000 years, you would think we would learn.

But the rules of evolution are clear:

Figure it out or die.

The times we are in feel like the end of the human race.

After Mother Earth casts us off

or we do it to ourselves,

will another species rise to take our place?

If history is correct, I believe this will be so.

Perhaps we are already here.

If you are one who believes they will remain after the world has destroyed itself, or who believes they embody the seeds of the new species, consider joining our growing community.  Love Warriors.  Dragon Riders of the Apocalypse.  The New Humans…..whatever name you want to give yourself.  You are not alone!

Reclaiming the Esoteric Priesthood

The Patriarchal/Hierarchical Priestess?

Until this moment, we have only been able to define, express and understand the calling of priestess (or priest) within the context of the hierarchical and patriarchal worldview.  As a result, those who have discerned and accepted this calling have done so within the only framework Western culture knowns – that of presider.  In this expression, the priest or priestess is charged with the task of performing and facilitating ritual – first for herself and then for those who are called into community around her.  She is called to honor the lunar phases and the turning of the year with proper rituals, offerings and intentions and to do so in a (somewhat) public way.  Beyond presiding, some priestesses are also called to be healers, to counsel, and in some traditions – to be an oracle through card reading, throwing runes, reading palms or speaking with the dead.  All of these external, exoteric, outward expressions of priestess are critical to the priestly calling, but in interpreting the priestly calling through the hierarchical/patriarchal worldview, we have missed a critically important task of the priestess – that of transformer.

(I am choosing the word transformer to describe the forgotten task of the priestess because I don’t know what else to call it!  If you come up with a better word, please let me know! )

Trying to Remember What Has Been Forgotten

This is where things are going to get a bit sticky as I try to describe something for which we have no historical context and therefore no conscious memory.  This forgotten task of the priest/priestess is one we have not seen in our patriarchal world for over 5000 years.  This hidden/esoteric/secret and mostly silent task of the priestess was left in the dust when the hierarchical/patriarchal hoards conquered the peaceful and egalitarian communities that preceded them.  What was left was an external model of priest – one who has power over the people and who is the intermediary between the people and their god.  This is not as it was before.

The Exoteric: Prior to patriarchal rule, the spiritual needs of the community were supported by women and men who played a wide variety of roles.  Some led ritual, made offerings to the gods, counseled, and healed.  Some read the stars and the earth for signs of impending change. Some were teachers. These were the exoteric (meaning outward or external) priestly roles.

The Esoteric: Alongside the exoteric, however, was the esoteric – the priestly role that was internal, quiet, and mostly done in separation or secret.  These were the women and men who spent their day communing with Spirit (praying), and who took into their bodies that which needed to be transformed/healed/released on behalf of the tribe and for the sake of the world and then transformed/healed and released it.  These were the transformers of ancient times and the task of the priest and priestess that is reemerging today.

Where Do We Fit?

I find myself moving through an incredibly deep transformation.  I am taking a risk and sharing this with vulnerability and transparency in the event it might speak to you on some level.

I have to say that transformation is not quite the right word for what I feel is happening.  It is more like an unfolding….or a remembering…..or perhaps a reclaiming.  In this it feels as if I am birthing a new world for me and through me.  (if the bloated feeling in my belly is any indication, this new world is ENORMOUS  J  ).

In this unfolding/birthing, I am coming more and more in contact with this plain and simple truth:

I was not made for the 3d world.

What do I mean by that?  I mean that none of the things that are valued in our externally focused world have value to me:

Money, fame, power, status, material possessions, driving, striving, achieving.

None of it.

As it relates to relationship: I am not looking for someone to complete me. Neither am I interested in partnership simply for the sake of having an “other,” or to fill a void because I’m afraid of or uncomfortable with being alone. What the 3d world offers in the way of relationship is simply not for me – there is something bigger and better that has been planted in my Soul and I will settle for nothing less.

In short, I have never felt at home in a world that values the externals and pressures us to seek after something “out there” for fulfillment.  Neither have I felt at home with all the things we are expected to “do” to achieve these external goals.

The goals of this world are not my goals, and I’m tired from 54 years of trying to fit into a world or find acceptance in a world where I do not belong.

I often feel like I came here from somewhere else and someone forgot to pack my survival suit. But more importantly (or perhaps more accurately):

I sometimes wonder if I’m here – not to fit into this world but to birth something new in its place – if not for the world, at the very least for myself.  Because if there is one thing I do know it is that birthing a new world begins by birthing a new world for ourselves. Others can play along if they want to – but that is up to them.  The other truth is that the only thing that truly matters is what we do for ourselves.  If we can’t do it for ourselves, then 1) how can we expect others to and 2) if not for our own work, how will others know what is truly possible?

So here’s the crazy idea……if I could birth any kind of world through me, if I could live in any kind of world, what would it look like?

For me, this world begins with my Divine calling.  (and maybe birthing this world IS my calling).

I have come to understand that my Divine mission and calling is LOVE and that there are many ways in which I live out that calling.

  • Just by being me. I see this most when I am “out and about” – going to yoga, grocery shopping, running errands, picking up my daily coffee at the New Moon.  I smile and am kind to the people I meet.  I strike up friendly conversations when appropriate.  I perform little niceties like bringing a local business owner a cup of coffee “just because” and sharing posts and endorsements about local businesses when I have a chance.   I have seen evidence that just being me has a positive impact on the people I meet.
  • Being a Mother. That part is easy. My kids are amazing and all I had to do is love them, see them for who they are and support them in being that. I feel like the luckiest mom on the planet to have been given two such amazing humans to love and I am more and more in awe of them every single day!
  • The public stuff. My website, blog, books, online classes, etc.  All of this is me being me and sharing my gifts in the world.
  • The secret stuff. This is the piece that is becoming more and more apparent and more and more urgent and persistent.  My daily meditation practice – that’s obvious.  What’s not obvious is the deeply healing and transformational work I have been doing for the world – but for which I have not given myself ANY credit.  This is the work that takes me off my feet and sometimes lays me out. Those days where I am feeling and bearing the weight of the world – not because I’m thinking about it, but because it has made a home in me.  The days my whole body hurts, my ears are ringing and I’m dizzy from what in the world is asking to be transformed through me.  The unexplained migraines, full body pain, emotions that are not my own, fatigue, exhaustion….the list of symptoms goes on and on and one but there is one thing that has become increasingly clear:

There is no medical reason for the symptoms I am experiencing.  This is the YUK of the world seeking healing, transformation and release; and I am one of those called to support that healing. If you are reading this, you might be one as well.

Birthing this new world for and through myself means honoring who I am called to be and what I am called to do as holy, sacred and of value and creating the space in which all of this can be. This will be no small task as the 3d world has no space for any of what I am bringing forth. It is for this reason that it feels to me as if I am birthing a new world – to bring forth who I am and what I am called to do, there needs to be a world to receive and support that.  It seems that as I am called to more fully birth myself I am also birthing the world in which I fit.

Weird.

A Note from Lauri Ann Lumby, course creator and facilitator:

Before embarking on this journey, I want to thank you for stepping into the question of your own shamanic call.  I wrote this course for those, like me, who have received the shamanic call, but have been mostly unsupported in this call because of the culture in which we were raised.  For those of us who live in the West (Western Europe, United States, Canada, even Australia and westernized parts of South America and Asia), we are so far removed from our ancestral roots and from the indigenous traditions of our own native peoples that the shamanic call isn’t even a consideration.  Instead, what shamanic cultures would understand as characteristic of a shamanic call, Western culture judges as illness, at best, or at the worst – insanity.   As such, those living in a Westernize culture who are experiencing an authentic shamanic call are left to their own devises, most often misunderstood, judged and even condemned for the experiences of their shamanic call (including high sensitivities, vivid dreams and nightmares, intuitive and psychic abilities, strange and frequent illnesses, depression, anxiety and even psychosis).

Some have found their way through this call by adopting practices and traditions of indigenous peoples, ie: “walking the red road” as Caucasian Americans might refer to the Native American traditions they have adopted and attempted to make their own.  Others might find support through practices of the Mayans, Peruvians, Inuit or Aboriginal people.  While we have much to gain by learning from other cultures, for those with Western European roots, the best we can ever do is to pretend, because these practices are not authentically our own.

The purpose of this course is to validate and authenticate your shamanic call and to give you some simple tools and support for embracing and exercising this call in your daily life.  While this course is just a beginning (Shamanism 101, if you will), through this process you will have an opportunity to:

  • Understand the characteristics of a shamanic call.
  • Discern your own shamanic call.
  • Understand the spiritual crisis that often heralds the shamanic call.
  • Learn basic tools for beginning to utilize this call.
  • Find your own language, arising out of your own mythology and spiritual background for embracing your shamanic call.
  • Discover the basic tools of the shaman of ritual and journeying.

Much of what will be shared here arose out of my personal journey of discovering and embracing my own shamanic call, along with contemporary research in the field of Transpersonal Psychology which has shed light on this call, especially for those in the Westernized world.

To complete this course, you will need yourself, a notebook or journal and a box of crayons.  I invite you to enter into this process with an attitude of inquiry, curiosity and wonder, for this is ultimately what the shamanic call is all about – seeing the world and our life experience through the lens of magic – for as a shaman, this is what you are!   The original title of this course was “Broken Wings,” because in a culture without a culture, we most often find the hallmarks of our call looked upon with suspicion and judgment, effectively clipping our wings and making it impossible for us to fly.  In this course, I want to help you to fly!

Thank you for giving yourself permission to explore this call within yourself and for taking the time to more deeply discern this call.  I am happy and grateful to be a source of support for you as you move through this process and toward that end, I am available for brief email exchanges and for more intensive private consultations at my regular hourly rate.  Please consult my website for details.

A Witch! A Witch!

Responding to the Catholic self-appointed inquisition.

Just when I think I am off their radar and free of the wrath of the Catholic self-appointed inquisition, they rear their fearful head. This morning as I was enjoying a glimpse of the new and expansive opportunities that are coming my way, not the least of which is the pending release of my new book – Union – a year of spiritual lessons and practices with Mary Magdalene, this shows up in my email.  Not one….but two emails from the same individual spewing their wrath:

You wicked evil christian. You thought you could deceive me and lead me to believe you really discern spirits when in fact you said it led you to practice Reiki, an occult practice forbidden for Catholics.

The Lord rebuke you. It sickens me you practice Reiki.

Your charism is not from God. The occult practices indicate otherwise. What I don’t understand is why mix catholicism with the occult?

Even if you have the charism, I know you are not in the truth because you are an occult practioner who is doing what is forbidden by Catholic practice. What happened to you…

I’m really saddened to see that you practice the occult because if you really do have the charism of discernment, The Church and people really do need it and not mixed with occult practices…

Normally, I would not give any energy or attention to emails such as these, but today, I find myself particularly annoyed, not because of their words, but because of the larger message behind these words which is:

If you are a woman who happens to be doing the work that Jesus did, you are evil, wicked, doing the work of Satan and condemnable as a witch.

As it relates to being a witch, I wear that mantle proudly for to me being a witch means:

  • Dedicating my life in service to the Divine and in support of the betterment of our world.
  • Emptying myself so as to be a vessel through which the Divine might be known in our world through my own unique gifts.
  • Allowing the Divine to work through my spiritual gifts of discernment, teaching, encouragement, leadership, pastoring, prophecy and healing to transform our world from fear into love.
  • Engaging in ritual practices for the purpose of concretizing my commitment to God which then act as efficacious signs of grace…by which divine life is dispensed to us (ref. Catholic Encyclopedia).
  • Strengthening my commitment to God and to the mission of love through daily meditation, contemplation and prayer.
  • Being of service to others as a source of love in all things.

I see none of what I do as contrary to the Christian message, most especially as this message was modeled by Christ. Jesus taught.  He prophesied.  He counseled. He meditated and prayed. He performed ritual.  He led.  He pastored.  He laid on hands for the purpose of healing, expelling demons (fears) and to empower those he taught to do what he had done.

It wasn’t only men whom Jesus empowered to continue his work. The FIRST ordained to continue Jesus’ work was Mary Magdalene (John 20), and she was a woman!  Sadly, the early response to Mary Magdalene’s role as successor to Jesus was ridicule, condemnation and slander.  She immediately went from being Jesus’ co-equal partner, the one who first saw the risen Christ and the one sent forth to share the good news, to adulterous woman, prostitute, whore….in other words….a witch.  What happened to Mary Magdalene two hundred centuries ago has been the burden inflicted upon all women thereafter who have attempted to do what Jesus did and be whom he called them to be.  The message has been clear:

If you are woman called to do the work of Christ, you are not welcome and we will enforce this ban by calling you a witch, a heretic, a whore, a blasphemer, who does this work in the company of Satan.

While it would be easy for me to get on my feminist bandwagon, I find here that I cannot as these accusations of being in the company of Satan go beyond gender. In fact these are the exact same accusations heaped upon Jesus by the self-appointed inquisition of his own time:

When Jesus had driven out a demon, some of the crowd said: “By the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he drives out demons.” Others, to test him, asked him for a sign from heaven. But he knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste and house will fall against house. And if Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that it is by Beelzebul that I drive out demons. If I, then, drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own people drive them out? Therefore they will be your judges. But if it is by the finger of God that I drive out demons, then the Kingdom of God has come upon you. When a strong man fully armed guards his palace, his possessions are safe.

But when one stronger than he attacks and overcomes him, he takes away the armor on which he relied and distributes the spoils. Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

Luke 11: 15-26

Apparently ANYONE who tries to do the work that Jesus did is vulnerable to condemnation. When I pierce through the veil of these accusations I see one thing:

Fear – specifically, the human fear of that which is outside of our control.

Catholic (and most religious) doctrine, wraps life up in a tight little ball. We are told what to believe, what not to believe, what is good and what is evil. Theologians might have the freedom to argue about these beliefs, but the common person sitting in the pew is expected to believe without question. For many, believing without question provides the perceived surety they crave in an otherwise unsure world. The problem is that life CANNOT be wrapped up in a tight little ball for us to control. The truth is there is very little we truly know and even less that we can control. Those who have been called beyond these tightly defined parameters, who are comfortable in the world of the unknown, where life embodies many shades of grey and where freedom is found in ambiguity become a threat to those who cling to the illusion of surety. To the latter, it is easy to think of the former as evil as our presence stirs their fears and the unhealed wounds that cause them to cling to what they think they know. Witches….shit-disturbers, we might be one and the same. J

While my initial response to the emails above was annoyance and my second response was hurt, I can now sit in the compassion of understanding the fears that caused this person to lash out in this way. I am sorry for the unhealed fears that cause them to seek after surety. I am sorry for the fact that my presence has triggered these fears. But even more so I am sorry that they chose not to use the tools that Jesus gave them to heal those fears so that instead of finding separation, they might have found the love that unites us both. In this, there are no witches, there is no inquisition, there are only human beings trying to find peace in an otherwise fearful world.

Only God

a personal reflection by Lauri Ann Lumby

This morning’s blog is coming from a deeply personal place and arising out of a place of fragmented vulnerability….so apologies ahead of time for momentary incoherence. 😉

2017 has been quite an interesting year so far. The most exciting things have been my soul-discovering trip to Ireland and the “new” things that are beginning to be birthed in my world including a promising business partnership and a burgeoning Magdalene Priestess Training program!

Playing a much more central role in 2017, however, has been the ever deepening and every widening journey of LETTING GO! It seems everywhere I turn I am being invited to let go of that which I used to turn to as a source of familiarity, routine, surety, security and support.  It seems I can’t take a single step without being confronted with something asking for release.  This release has included the need to redefine relationships (the nature of, my expectations or hopes around, boundaries, etc.), to let go of certain hopes and dreams; and more materially, facing the need to find new housing and buy a new car.  The whispering threat under all of this letting go is, “And HOW are you going to pay for that?????”  UGH!

As it all came to a head this past weekend with the resurfacing of my deepest core wound and its source, I knew that the letting go was not about letting go, but was in fact about letting in. Specifically – letting God in.

In this realization, I must give credit and gratitude to my experience as a Spiritual Director (and a mystic). If I did not have the awareness of what the Divine call looks like, I would have been in much more despair than I have been (believe me, I’ve spent many hours on the couch wallowing in my grief, despair and perceived helplessness) and not known where to turn or how to make sense of every rug being pulled out from beneath my feet.  God isn’t an asshole (though sometimes it feels like “He” is.).  When we are being invited to let go….it is always for the purpose of letting in.

So, what does it mean when life is inviting us to release EVERYTHING upon which we have previously based our lives and EVERYTHING we formerly turned to as a source of hope and support? It means that life is supporting us in knowing that in the end, there is ONLY God.  Everything that we know of in our human experience is fleeting and temporary – relationships, jobs, homes, cars, money, belongings, our health and wellbeing, life itself.  It is all temporary and in the end, it all passes away.  When all has passed away….what is left is God.  Me and God.  God and me.  And when Lauri Ann Lumby is no longer, there is only God.

I am also grateful for my spiritual director, Leanore, who supported me yesterday in verbalizing my awareness and affirming the invitation. The purpose of all this letting go is so that I can let God in – to let God in on an even deeper level than I have ever done before.  To let God in so that I might know a deeper experience of God’s love.  To know God as my source of support.  To surrender into God’s hands knowing and trusting that God is carrying me to exactly where I need to be.  Most importantly of all….to do what I tell everyone of my students to do – to make God the number one priority of my life, to give all my energy and attention to God, to be open to receiving and being compelled and empowered by God’s love.  It is not about the temporary and fleeting things of this world, it is about God…..and only about God.

In closing, I want to share these words from Stephanie Azaria’s daily post (quoting one of her writers, Marie DesRoches at www.thecosmicpath.com.  If this isn’t God speaking to me, I don’t know what is:

In 3D I used to “think” of surrender as giving up my way and “doing” what God wanted.  In 5D I Align WITH the God That I Am and allow myself to BE all that I AM – expressing, moving, choosing, loving, breathing, WITH and IN that Presence.”

Mission Accomplished – a message of hope and love

My dear, beloved, brothers and sisters.

As we enter into this new year and this new era…we have finally arrived at the purpose for which all that has past will prove helpful.

We came to this planet to be light.

Through struggle and hardship, we have found our light.

By moving through societal conditioning, and all the other lies that say we aren’t “good enough” or that there’s something wrong with us, we have found ourselves – we have found our SOUL.

Our SOUL – the magnificent divine angelic beatific presence of who we are.

We are love.

star-heart-comet

With gentle hearts that have been made strong through the burden of heartbreak.

Our own Sacred Hearts and Immaculate Hearts – hearts broken and bleeding bringing forth abundant beauty.

We have succeeded where others have failed.

We have survived the 3D world. (not without a few scrapes and bruises!)

Our Souls have been brought forth through the pain, the rejection, the disappointment, the deep and profound loneliness and the longing for communion.

And in this longing, we have found each other.

sacred-heart-immaculate-heart

Until now, our light has been hidden as we have nurtured, cultivated, honed our magic and our true divine gift.

Our magic and our gift are the same.

And they are

LOVE.

Our purpose on this plane is LOVE.  Our mission is to be that love. And to be that love in every way that is possible.

Period.

We made it through hell so that together, we can show others the way when the world they have known begins to crumble.

We are that light.

We are the lifeboats that will take them to the other shore.

This is what we came here for.

Our time is now.

taking care

Our Children Need Our Help!

Yesterday I fielded a slew of phone calls, text messages and Facebook notifications from parents concerned for their children. An “unconfirmed threat” (News story HERE) was leveled against the local high schools and the school district responded by closing the schools, insuring our children’s safety while the proper authorities researched the threat and resolved the issue (which they eventually did).

Was the threat real? Were our children in danger?  Perhaps.  But more concerning is the fact that this happened in the first place.  These kinds of situations are symptoms of larger issues, coming out sideways.  Our children are smack dab in the middle of it, living and trying to survive in a world that doesn’t feel safe.

Our children need our help!

childrensavethe-world-meme

I have spoken at length about the societal issues that are causing our children distress. (HERE.)  Now I want to speak about our children themselves and what it is about them that make them especially vulnerable to anxiety, depression, anger, and all of symptoms of a world gone awry.

Our children were born into this world as kind, sensitive, loving, beings who came here with a mission. They are here for the purpose of building a new world – a world built on love, compassion, appreciation of diversity, peace, collaboration and harmony. This is the world that they KNOW in their hearts and the world they hoped would welcome them.  Instead, they found themselves waking up to a world at war, where fear rules, where those in power rule through fear, where diversity is not honored, where differences are demonized, where hatred reigns and where people are afraid.

To our sensitive and loving children, this world does not feel safe (it shouldn’t feel safe to us either….if it does, perhaps we should take another look). Not only do they feel unsafe in this world, the world they know in their hearts has made them ill-equipped for survival on this planet.  As such, many of our children struggle with sensitivities – food, environmental toxins, certain scents, textures of certain foods, the air itself, fabric, anything synthetic, the environments in which they find themselves (school, daycare, work, etc.).  Many are sensitive to light and sound, even temperature and weather.

Beyond the obvious material sensitivities, our children are also empaths. Empaths are human beings who are sensitive to the emotions of the people around them, the environment in which they find themselves, and for some, the world.  Not only are they experiencing their own anxiety in the face of a world that does not feel safe, they are feeling EVERYONE ELSE’s anxiety.  Without proper guidance and support in how to manage these feelings, that aren’t even their own, our children feel overwhelmed and many shut down.

Now, let me offer a little metaphor that might help us to better understand our children:

Imagine, just for a moment, that our children are not from here. Imagine that their origin is a beautiful planet where there is only love. Where people have learned to live in harmony with one another, where diversity is honored as sacred, where each person is acknowledged and honored for their unique gifts and what they bring to the whole.  Theirs is a world where people work together for the common good, and where all decisions are made on behalf of the all.  Nature is honored as beautiful and sacred as it is the Divine breathing into them through the grasses, trees, the flowers are the face of the Divine and the air is the Divine’s embrace.  In this world, everything is as the Divine made it and nothing has been tampered with by man’s selfish designs.  The air is clean and pure.  All water is safe to drink.  The soil is rich with minerals and nutrients. Medicine comes from the earth.  The elders are the guides of the community.  Children are the promise of generations to come.  They live in harmony with their planet and everything that dwells on it.  They receive what they need to survive and to thrive because everyone works together and knows now to share.  Nothing is wasted and everything that isn’t used is given back to the earth.

Then imagine that the air they breathe on their home and the gravity there differs from this planet. On their planet, things are lighter and when they walk, it feels as if they are walking on air.

Finally, imagine that they were sent here without their moon suits. They cannot breathe properly.  They are not being protected from the harsh environment that is so unlike their own. Because of the gravitational difference, which makes walking on this planet feel as if they are walking through lead, they are left feeling worn out, exhausted and tired.  Our children have had to slowly learn how to acclimate to this planet without the proper supports. Some have been successful.  Many have not.  🙁

There is, however, a happy ending for those children, if we allow it. This world NEEDS these children, their unique sensitivities and their unique gifts so that we can come back from the hole we have dug for ourselves.  They are indeed here to help us build the new world.  They already know what it looks and feels like.  We just need to get out of their way and support them while they are doing it.

In the meantime, as parents, it is our job to see our children for who they are. To ask them what they are feeling and what they need to navigate this strange world they were born into.  It is our job to seek out support when we have exhausted our own efforts, or rather, before we have.  And most importantly, we need to do the same for ourselves – because the children who came here to change our world, were born from parents who came here to do the same.  Let’s get on with it, shall we?

How I Know Where We’re Headed

  • -Because I’ve Been Here Before!

On Sunday this week, I posted my blog with the challenging question: Will You Survive the Collapse? It is not uncommon, after sending words like that into the ethers that people ask me, “How can you claim to know this?  How do you know?”  The unscientific response is, “I just know.”  But there is also a response based in science – specifically the science of applied knowledge gained through experience: I’ve been here before.

Now, I’m not talking about some whoo-whoo past life memory. I’m talking about experiences I’ve had in this life.  The experience is this:  nearly every single  company/institution I worked for, or with, went through some sort of cataclysmic change. Indeed, with this, you might call me the harbinger of doom.  But really, their collapse was not my fault.  I just happened to be there to witness it’s unfolding and the resulting collapse.  I was also there to be hospice to the dying and to remain, as long as I could stand it, as some other form was trying to be born.

It happened waaaayyyy back in the day when I worked for AT&T. It happened when I worked for St. Mary Resort in Glacier Park, Montana. It happened with a local company who went through a massive downsizing.  It happened during my employment with the Catholic Church – not once, but five times, not including the cataclysmic change that happened under the reign of Joseph Ratzinger (aka Pope Benedict XVI).  And it happened with the University where I did my graduate studies.

In every situation, the pattern was the same:

A time of great hope and expansion struck fear in the hearts of those ill-prepared for change, which then inspired a longing for the nostalgia of some idealized past, quickly followed by a dramatic pulling back that ultimately led to the death of what had been known.

Each. And. Every. Time.

This is exactly what is happening in our culture today – only on a much larger scale. Not everyone sees this, as it requires Eagle Vision to see how we have come to this…and where we are likely headed.  Fortunately, Eagle Vision is one of my gifts.

We have experienced profound and dramatic changes in our culture – just in my lifetime:

  • Manufacturing has been replaced by information and technology.
  • Our definition of family and the family web has profoundly changed.
  • Our cultural awareness of diversity has greatly expanded.
  • We have become more mobile and our communication is now global.
  • Our economy has shifted from local to national and now global.
  • We have access to more information than any generation previous to ours.

As these expansions are happening, we are also finding that we can no longer trust those institutions we used to rely on for guidance and support. This includes the many institutions, with whom we used to place our trust, who are now in the midst of their own collapse:

  • Healthcare
  • Education
  • Banking and Finance
  • Government
  • Religion
  • Corporations
  • The Military
  • The Economy

With all of this expansion, and the dramatic change that is accompanying this expansion, those ill-equipped or uncomfortable with change, have pulled back. They are retreating into the nostalgia of some idealized past where everyone was “happy, safe, housed and fed” – a past that has existed only in their imagination. With this, we are witnessing an upsurge in ‘isms – sexism, racism, orientationism, nationalism, beliefism, etc. etc. etc.  Instead of taking responsibility for the anxiety being experienced in the face of change, fingers are being pointed and entire populations scapegoated as the “enemy.”

All of this is how I know where we are headed. I have been here before.  I also know what it takes to survive and move through cataclysmic change as I have accompanied hundreds through similar change.

  1. Be honest. Acknowledge the death that is happening and the fear that accompanies death.
  2. Be hospice to the dying. Support people in acknowledging their fear and the grief that is arising in the face of the loss.  Provide them with support in moving through the fears and the accompanying faces of grief (shock, denial, bargaining, depression, anger, sorrow).  In being hospice, DO NOT INSULT those who are grieving with frivolous distractions (for example, the “joy in the workplace” initiative recently launched by the administration of an institution who shall not be named which is facing its own collapse.  “Scared that your job might be eliminated?  Join us at noon and learn how to make a potholder.” WHAT!?) Instead, be with them WHEREVER they are in their grieving process.  (PS Institution who shall not be named.  I’m still here offering my services in change and grief management because from what I can see and what I’m hearing from your employees, clearly, “you don’t got this!”)
  3. Give them something to hope in.  With every death comes the promise of new life – for those who have the courage to believe and the willingness to see the glimpses of the new life that is arising out of the ash of the old.  Point out those glimmers of new life and encourage others to support that new life.

The demise of what we have known is already happening and will soon be accelerating. I know this because I have been here before.  If I am proved wrong, I will be the first to admit I was wrong and shout hurray at the glorious revival of western culture.  In the meantime, I’m here if you want to talk about your fears, process your grief, and gather the support which will help you move through the death to the new life that will, indeed happen, and is already happening.
