From Fear to Magic

What appears to be chaos, disorder and destruction is simply our new world being born.  When we get out of our mind, and into our hearts, a whole other story is being told.  And it is a story of MAGIC!

Where Universes are Being Made

The world beyond union is where I’m being called.

Beyond the place of “We Are One.”

Beyond the idea of “Love.”

Instead, this is where we are not only

One with God

One with Love

One with Truth –

We ARE God

We ARE Love

We ARE Truth

We are darkness.

We are light.

We are all that is and all that is not.

Beyond even “I Am” or “I am That”

Here, “I become.”  “I create.”

Bringing forth out of Nothing

That which was once only a dream, an imagining, or an idea of the mind.

The effortless, seemless, unfolding of:

NO-THING into SOME-THING

The place where universes are created…

A universe of our own making.

Brought forth from

All the seeds we’ve planted

All the darkness we’ve transformed

All we have suffered

All we have endured

And all we’ve celebrated with wonder, joy and thanksgiving.

It is “the realization of things hoped for, and evidence of things unseen.”

Pure and simple – it is magic.

Unveiling Our Magic!

Unveiling Our Magic

(for the Catholic Witch or any other kind of witch – women and men endowed with the magical and the miraculous!)

copyright Lauri Ann Lumby

My whole life, my magic has only made itself known

in glimpses and glimmers.

Hidden away safely, while sneaking out sideways in:

Moments of profound knowing.

Apocalyptic dreams.

Seeing into and through another’s soul.

Calling out deceit.

Hearing the Voice of God.

Now it is time for my magic to come full force!

The burning times are over.

And there has been enough suffering in my life,

in the lives of my ancestors,

and in the lives of all those I know endowed with Magic’s gift.

Centuries of hiding our gifts:

Of not being heard.

Of being ridiculed and condemned,

Labeled as crazy.

Exiled or Murdered for whom The Mother made us to be.

But we’re not the crazy ones!

We hear all.

We see all.

We feel all.

We know all.

And this terrifies those who prefer not be seen for who they truly are.

In our world, this is the definition of insanity!

For we thrive in a world defined by:

Authenticity.

Honesty.

Transparency.

Accountability.

and Vulnerability.

These are the very things of which the world has tried to deprive us.

BUT NO MORE!

I/We will no longer veil our truth or hide our gifts

for the sake of your comfort.

Get ready

Because with our unveiling

A whole new world is about to be born!

When Did You First Know?

Yesterday I had the profound gift of sitting with a dear friend who is healing after 6 months of INTENSIVE cancer treatment. We were talking about all the things you talk about when death is staring at you in the face.  In the midst of the conversation she asked me a question that will likely haunt me the rest of my life:

“Lauri, when did you first know?”

She was inquiring about the gift (which often feels like a curse) I have of seeing, hearing and feeling EVERYTHING that is happening in our world. Her question took my breath away, first, in revealing to me that she SAW and BELIEVED IN my gift.  Second, because I had never really thought to ask myself the same question.

When did I first know that I was seeing, hearing and feeling EVERYTHING?

When I sit with that question, the image that comes forth is me clinging to my mother’s pelvis as the doctors were ripping me by the foot from her womb. It seems I already knew what I would hear, see, feel and know and I wanted no part of it! (Interestingly, my daughter who shares this gift with me was also born breech.)

Seeing. Hearing.  Feeling. Knowing.  A gift as well as a curse.  But as my friend SAW and BELIEVED IN my gift, I felt the “cursed” part fall away and what was left was only the gift.  I felt this gift wash over me as a blessing….as a prayer….as a benediction.  I suddenly saw, heard, felt and knew the blessing this gift has been to me, and to those I serve.  Most obvious to me is the way this gift has supported me in seeing, hearing, feeling and knowing my children.  Knowing them in a way that has allowed me to avoid the temptation of crafting my children into something I think I want them to be.  Instead, I have supported them in being who they are.  I suspect for many of my students and clients I have done the same.

This gift has also allowed me to hold our world in love. I see, feel, hear and know the evil and pain in our world….and I feel it into the depth of my being.  It HURTS.  And yet, I know this is not who we are.  Beyond the hurt, the ignorance, the evil in the world, I see the pain and beyond the pain I see the love.  We are all on this planet trying to find our way home and the only way we can find our way home is through love.

Love has found its way to me through seeing, feeling, hearing and knowing EVERYTHING that is happening in our world. Love is finding its way to you through your own unique gifts. So I will ask you the same question asked of me by my friend:

When did you first know the gifts that you possess that are showing you the way to love?

A Note from Lauri Ann Lumby, course creator and facilitator:

Before embarking on this journey, I want to thank you for stepping into the question of your own shamanic call.  I wrote this course for those, like me, who have received the shamanic call, but have been mostly unsupported in this call because of the culture in which we were raised.  For those of us who live in the West (Western Europe, United States, Canada, even Australia and westernized parts of South America and Asia), we are so far removed from our ancestral roots and from the indigenous traditions of our own native peoples that the shamanic call isn’t even a consideration.  Instead, what shamanic cultures would understand as characteristic of a shamanic call, Western culture judges as illness, at best, or at the worst – insanity.   As such, those living in a Westernize culture who are experiencing an authentic shamanic call are left to their own devises, most often misunderstood, judged and even condemned for the experiences of their shamanic call (including high sensitivities, vivid dreams and nightmares, intuitive and psychic abilities, strange and frequent illnesses, depression, anxiety and even psychosis).

Some have found their way through this call by adopting practices and traditions of indigenous peoples, ie: “walking the red road” as Caucasian Americans might refer to the Native American traditions they have adopted and attempted to make their own.  Others might find support through practices of the Mayans, Peruvians, Inuit or Aboriginal people.  While we have much to gain by learning from other cultures, for those with Western European roots, the best we can ever do is to pretend, because these practices are not authentically our own.

The purpose of this course is to validate and authenticate your shamanic call and to give you some simple tools and support for embracing and exercising this call in your daily life.  While this course is just a beginning (Shamanism 101, if you will), through this process you will have an opportunity to:

  • Understand the characteristics of a shamanic call.
  • Discern your own shamanic call.
  • Understand the spiritual crisis that often heralds the shamanic call.
  • Learn basic tools for beginning to utilize this call.
  • Find your own language, arising out of your own mythology and spiritual background for embracing your shamanic call.
  • Discover the basic tools of the shaman of ritual and journeying.

Much of what will be shared here arose out of my personal journey of discovering and embracing my own shamanic call, along with contemporary research in the field of Transpersonal Psychology which has shed light on this call, especially for those in the Westernized world.

To complete this course, you will need yourself, a notebook or journal and a box of crayons.  I invite you to enter into this process with an attitude of inquiry, curiosity and wonder, for this is ultimately what the shamanic call is all about – seeing the world and our life experience through the lens of magic – for as a shaman, this is what you are!   The original title of this course was “Broken Wings,” because in a culture without a culture, we most often find the hallmarks of our call looked upon with suspicion and judgment, effectively clipping our wings and making it impossible for us to fly.  In this course, I want to help you to fly!

Thank you for giving yourself permission to explore this call within yourself and for taking the time to more deeply discern this call.  I am happy and grateful to be a source of support for you as you move through this process and toward that end, I am available for brief email exchanges and for more intensive private consultations at my regular hourly rate.  Please consult my website for details.

A Note from Lauri Ann Lumby, OM, OPM, MATS, program creator and facilitator:

For my entire life I have been fascinated by magic. Naturally drawn to the mystical, I found my childhood role models in Samantha Stevens, Morticia Addams and Lily Munster.  In my teens, I become overwhelmingly obsessed with anything that had to do with King Arthur and read every book on the subject that I was able, ultimately culminating in the Arthurian masterpiece, The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley.  To say that I loved Tolkien and Star Wars would be an understatement, and Excalibur was my friend.

This love for magic was further supported by my Catholic upbringing which brought me up close and personal to magic that “turned bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ,” that healed the sick, exorcised demons, and made a humble human into the “child of God.” Jesus magic was everywhere and the rituals which facilitated this magic spoke to something very deep within my Soul.

Fast forward into adulthood, along with formation as a Catholic lay minister, I studied Wicca, Native American spirituality, Celtic myth and magic. I set up my home altar and when I asked for guidance it came in the form of a brick which flew through the air, awakening me to my true purpose which had to do with Priesthood – but not the priesthood I had grown up with.  As it turned out, neither was my call to Priesthood somehow wrapped up in any of the neo-pagan, priestess or goddess movements.  Instead, it seems like it was a Priesthood that predated all of these – what I have heard recent authors call “the primordial tradition.”

In the Judeo-Christian tradition in which I was raised, this primordial tradition is given a name: The Order of Melchizedek.  First mentioned in the Book of Genesis as relating to the High Priest of Salem, Jesus is also mentioned as associated with this tradition.  What distinguishes the primordial tradition from the systems of magic popular today is that in the Order of Melchizedek:

  • Magic is not done for the sake of “getting what we want,” but for the sake of aligning our purpose with that of the Divine.
  • It is not we who are “doing” the magic; it is the Divine working through us.
  • The Order of Melchizedek “keeps it simple,” acknowledging that the true power of magic is not in complicated rituals, invocations, chants or spells, but is in our intention to be One with the Divine – surrendering our own will to the Divine, and emptying ourselves so that the Divine might live in and through us.
  • We acknowledge and accept what was said to be true of Jesus:

Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped,
but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave,

being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form, he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross.

Phil 2: 5b-8

It is for all of these reasons that in spite of more training programs on magic and ritual (including the ancient Jewish mystical system of the Kabbalah) than you can shake a stick at; I have endeavored to create a training program that presents magic in another light.

Christian Magic?

The Order of Melchizedek is here to support us in reclaiming and reactivating Christian magic – the ancient and secret magic of the Christian tradition.  This is the magic that Jesus learned in his own journey of self-realization and self-actualization and the magic that he taught his disciples.  (an excerpt from the Order of Melchizedek Level One Training).

order of melchizedek, Christian Magic, Catholic Magic, ritual, magic, shamanism, kabbalah,

The roots of this Christian magic reach way back in time, long before David designated himself high priest (PS 110) and long before the patriarchal tribes of Abram found themselves in the land of the Canaanites and received their blessing from the high priest Melchizedek (GN 14).

The roots of this magic go back farther still to a time when the One God was known as a genderless God who was nameless and faceless but who had many names and many faces to better serve the needs of the people.  This was a God that could be he, she, breath, spirit, fire, mother, father, king or queen; and in whom the people could see reflections of themselves. In seeing themselves in God, they discovered that this God could be known, and in knowing this God, they would know themselves.

The roots of this magic go back to a time when the people lived in peace – a peace that arose in the knowledge that they were inseparable – one with each other and one with their God.  All people lived in harmony for they knew that it was through this harmony that they could best survive. The magic that they practiced supported this union.

Union is the purpose of Christian magic and the rituals and practices of the Order of Melchizedek, and these rituals and practices support this union:

  • Union with the Divine
  • Union within ourselves
  • Union with each other
  • Union with all of creation

It is in this place of Union that we find ourselves and it is through this Union that we learn and understand that each of us, in our uniqueness, is a temple of the Divine and that it is through us that the Divine seeks to be known and made manifest in this world.  Here the will of God is made manifest within and through us as each of us are called to be reflections of the Divine in human form – fully human and fully Divine.  Here is where we find our own fulfillment and where the Divine purpose of the human experiment finds its fruition.

Women and Magic: Taking Back our Power

Below is an excerpt from The Order of Melchizedek training program which empowers you with knowledge and skills to support you in the truest purpose of magic – to be a vessel through which the Divine vision of Love can be made manifest both in your own life and in the world around you.  Learn more HERE.

Women and Magic:  Taking Back Our Power!

For the past 5000 years, since the warring hoards, with their jealous and wrathful gods, conquered the people of peace, all that is Holy within us has been suppressed.  This has been especially true of a unique holiness possessed by certain women and men – men and women who had heard and accepted the call to be a channel through which Divine Love was to be known in our world.  These men and women had been charged with holding and maintaining the balance and did so through their intimate connection with the Divine.  They were said to speak and lay with the “gods” and in this they came to know the fullness of Love, becoming the bearers of Love in the world.  They then brought this connection forth in the world through their gifts of healing, teaching, and prophecy. They saw the presence of the Divine in each and every thing and through this observation, guided by the Divine, learned how to heal with both the matter of the earth and the energy of the Divine.  In “speaking with the gods” and observing the movements of nature, they learned to predict nature’s events and how to harness the powers of nature – earth, air, water and flame.  They understood the workings of the human body and how to support the transition into life, maintaining wellness, and acting as guardians at the threshold into death.  With the voice of the Divine to guide them, they were able to discern truth and support the cause of justice and did so by allowing the Divine to speak and act through them. With the eyes of the Divine to guide them, they perceived the shifting of the tides – including that which heralded harmony’s destruction and the coming of their own death as a force and a power for maintaining the delicate balance of Human and Divine, Masculine and Feminine, Death and Life.

women and magic, witches, witchcraft, order of melchizedek, christian magic,

History has called these people witches.

And for 5000 years, those who carry the fear of the warring hoards, with their jealous and wrathful gods, have tried to rid the world of those who would speak and act for the cause of Love.  For 5000 years, women and men who have been called to be a force of Divine Love in the world and who have tried to do so through their unique gifts of healing, teaching and prophecy have been sought out, chased down, hunted, and killed for daring to share their gifts.  In the West, millions upon millions have died for wanting to live the fullness of their powers of Love – the Crusades, the Inquisition, the Witch trials and burnings, Joan of Arc burned at the stake, the Holocaust, and countless wars fought “in the name of God”.  If the voice of Love wasn’t killed, it was silenced or imprisoned by laws meant to keep the power of Love from making its way forth in the world – laws or corporate policies that makes it impossible for midwives to share their gifts, herbalists fined for prescribing plants not approved by the FDA, healers condemned by their Church for “doing the work of the devil.”   For 5000 years, men and women who bear this call, who have been Divinely appointed to be a force of Divine Love through which harmony can be restored and then maintained in our world have been demonized, condemned, silenced, and in many cases, killed for “being a witch.”

The “Witch’s” Purpose is Love.

Our world is broken and it is dying and there has never been a time when it was more critical that the cause of LOVE be empowered in the world. What was true 5000 years ago is still true today – certain women and men have been uniquely called to be a force of Divine Love in the world so that the world might be restored to and maintained in its originally intended state of harmony and peace.  Those who have been called “witches” are the force through which LOVE will have its way and the world will be restored to its originally intended state of harmony and peace.

If you are one who has heard this call, who has sensed the power of the Divine within you, who has glimpsed the gifts of healing, teaching and prophecy awakening in you, you are not alone and your time is NOW.  In the company of your brothers and sisters who have already awakened and who are in the process of awakening, step forth from the chains of oppression, be freed of the guilt which has imprisoned you and your ancestors before you, walk forth into the light of your Divine call and BE THE LOVE that you were called to be so that our world can once again be free!  We need your gifts and we need them now.  The burning times are over and it is once again time for Love to be known in the world and it wants to be known through you!

Catholic Witch?

Catholic Witch?  According to “Google” apparently this is how many people find my blog.  When I saw the “if you type idiot” thing yesterday, I became curious.  What happens if I type “Catholic Witch” into the Google search bar?  Well, I found out!  It’s me!  Hee Hee.  Here’s a little reflection that is part of the introductory materials in my new training program, The Order of Melchizedek.  Am I a Catholic Witch?  I guess I’ll let you decide!

The Hidden Tradition of Christian Magic

“The Hidden Tradition of Christian Magic” from the Order of Melchizedek Training Program. Learn more HERE.

Once upon a time, I was the perfect little Catholic school girl.  Hair in pigtails.  White blouse, plaid jumper, knee highs and sensible oxfords.  Every morning I proudly walked to the corner to catch my bus with all the other good little Catholic school boys and girls.  I was proud to don my uniform.  I was proud to be among my “tribe.”  I was proud to wave the banner of righteousness with Jesus as my guide.

That’s the Lauri that the outside world perceived. But, there was another Lauri lurking under the mask of the Cath-o-lick Girl!  This was Lauri the witch.  Mrs. Hodgson saw her when I flirted with Pat Gerber instead of listening to her lecturing us about all the ways we might say God’s name in vain.  Sr. Loretta saw her when I questioned the Church’s teaching on what happened to people who were not baptized.  Mr. Pavlock saw her when I tried to dot my i’s with hearts.  Mrs. Neff saw her when instead of tending to my math lesson, I was throwing superballs and watching them ricocheting off the ceiling, floor and blackboards with the naughty boys.  And Fr. (now Bishop) Doyle saw her when I challenged his believes on his clerical privilege (he had the balls to tell us got to go to heaven before us, simply because he was a priest, and regardless of his moral character….he thought he got a free pass!)

Learn more about the Order of Melchizedek Training Program, a training in Christian Magic HERE.

Now, don’t get me wrong.  I was mostly a good girl, too good in the opinion of many (I was only a little self-righteous!).  But, my true self could not help but come out sideways as I worked on being perfect so that I could earn the love and approval of my parents, my teachers, and ultimately, God.

My true self, found meaning in the mystical and the magical and while there could not have been a better place to grow up than in the Catholic Church that is all about mystery and magic – something was always missing.  While I wasn’t conscious of this at the time, I’m curious now to know if deep down I wondered why only the priests got to do the magic.  It seems rather unfair.  Only the priests got to turn the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ, heal the sick, absolve sins, magically turn an ordinary child into a child of God, and exorcise demons.  What was up with that?

Thankfully, there were many things outside my Catholic experience that did speak to and reflect the magic of my Soul.  Samantha Stevens in Bewitched.  The Wicked Witch of the West.  HR Puffinstuff.  Mary Poppins and all the Disney fairy godmothers, evil queens and witches.  And Sleeping Beauty’s Maleficent – the best cinema villain – only because she was sooooo misunderstood.  How would you feel if all your sisters were invited to the ball but you were not?  I’d be pissed too!

So, when I became a grown up, many books and resources crossed my path that reflected and called forth the magic within that wanted to be know – the Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley, most notably.  Learning about the feminine magic of the mystical isle, set me off on a quest that has taken 26 years to complete (Saturn’s second return).  The winding and twisting path of discovering my magic took me into the exploration of Wicca, Celtic paganism, Neo-Paganism, Neo-Shamanism, the Mysteries of the Golden Dawn, Kabbalistic magic, Egyptian magic, the gods and goddesses of the Celtic and Hindu traditions, the Emerald Tablet, the Egyptian Book of the Dead, in-depth study of energy medicine, Chi Qong, Yoga, Bhakti, and the ancient and continuing tradition and practice of alchemy.  In my quest, I had devoured everything that came into my path that had to do with magic.  Oh, does Harry Potter count too?  I think it should!  Expecto Patronum!

Magic, I learned, was in my blood.  Everything I studied felt like a remembering.  But even after all this study, something still was missing.  While I appreciated all the tools I had gathered, practiced, learned and honed from all these different traditions, the Christian component was missing.  Or rather, the Jesus component.  Something deep within me said that my journey to magic would not be complete until I found the Jesus link.

As it turns out, the Jesus link had been right in front of my nose the whole time:

  • In scripture  (Hebrews 5: 7-10)
  • In the First Eucharistic Prayer during the Catholic mass (http://catholic-resources.org/ChurchDocs/EP1-4.htm)
  • In the ordination of the Catholic priesthood and by extension, all who are baptized.  http://catholicexchange.com/the-order-of-melchizedek

There it was, right in front of my eyes.  Jesus was a priest according to the Order of Melchizedek.  Catholic priests are ordained into this order.  This is the priesthood activated within all believers through their baptism (and in my mind, by extension, anyone who might consider Jesus to be their teacher whether they are baptized or not.)

The magic I had longed for, searched for, and hungered for my whole life had been there all along in my teacher Jesus and within the Catholic Church in which I was raised.  The problem was, (and still is) that women and those called to intimate partnership through marriage are barred from this magic.

Then there is the problem of the secrets.  In the Catholic Church, all we see is the external Christian magic – the consecration of the bread and wine, the pouring of water in baptism, the laying on of hands in confirmation, etc.  In fact, the external magic may be all that remains in the Christian magic of the Catholic Church. My task has been to exhume the magic that I believe has been buried since the day that Christianity sold itself out to the patriarchy. When Christianity became a monarchy instead of the egalitarian and democratic experience that Jesus modeled (though remember, Jesus wasn’t a Christian he was a Jew), everything of the esoteric (and by association, the feminine) was set aside, and later condemned as evil.

Now, there may be a good reason for hiding away the magic.

First, there are the practical reasons:

  • Magic has power.  Psycho-spiritual maturity is required in those performing magic, along with a strong system of accountability.  Power is a great temptation and one needs to be strong enough to resist this temptation.
  • REAL magic is for one purpose and one purpose only – Union with God.  In this union, we uncover and discover our truth.  Not all are ready for the knowledge of and consequences of their truth.

Then there is the political reason:

  • Again, magic is power.  REAL magic – the kind that leads us into Union with the Divine creates and supports a self-actualized and empowered population of women and men who know who they are, what their gifts are and how they are called to use them.  And they are not afraid to use them.  Institutions built on fear, power and control fear this kind of REAL power, because it cannot be manipulated and controlled. No wonder the Cathars were massacred.

My task has been to remember these ancient practices of Christian Magic that I believe were part of Jesus’ training through his experiences in Egypt, with the mystical orders of Judaism, and during his time in India among the great Hindu masters.  The reason Jesus was acknowledged as a priest in the Order of Melchizedek, is because these practices, like Jesus’ teachings, are not limited to one single religious belief system or practice, but are indeed, Universal.
