No Reward for Being Good

A letter to all healers and change-makers

Lauri Ann Lumby, OM, OPM, MATS

My Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Yesterday I was gifted with a startling realization – one that I believe applies to many (if not all) of the amazing women, men and children I know who are here to heal and change our world.  The roots of this lie within our childhoods, the roles we took on, our beliefs about those roles and how these beliefs have translated into our adult lives – specifically in our tendency to take the unique and special people we are and the gifts we bring to our world for granted and the physical manifestation (or rather, the lack thereof) of taking our gifts and ourselves for granted….which for many of us has translated into struggles over money. (UGH).

It begins in our childhood and in the roles we took on within our family of origin and then brought forth into our life experiences.  For many who become healers/changemakers, these childhood roles include: protector, peacemaker, mediator, “good girl/boy,” caretaker, approval seeker, the responsible one, etc.  These roles become so much a part of who we are that they are often taken for granted.  “Oh, that’s just how (insert your name here) is.”  While on one hand it simply is who we are and what we do and likely the result of the gifts we brought into this world, no one thinks anything of it. Never is there recognition or reward for the effort we put in (often internally) to assume these roles or the inherent gifts we were given that allowed us to take on these roles in the first place. Additionally, there is no acknowledgment for the gifts that come forth out of these roles, which for many include: courage, self-sufficiency, discipline, foresight, empathy, compassion, kindness, the desire to help and to serve, etc. What we take away from these lived experiences is the understanding that there is no reward for being good.  Even more devastating perhaps is the understanding that there is no value to who we are or what we do because “it is simply who and how we are.”

This understanding then follows us into our adult lives.  As we found our calling to be healers/changemakers and understand that this IS who we are and WHAT we came here to do, our past experiences color our beliefs and feelings around this.  If it is simply who and what we do and who and what we are has always been taken for granted, then what value/reward/recognition is there for the gifts we bring into the world to make the world a better place?  We see the manifestation of this is our struggles with money – in our struggles with charging for our services, for asking for an adequate exchange for sharing our gifts in the world, etc.  We also see it in the constant struggle of getting our names and our gifts and services out there…. It often seems as if what works for everyone else simply doesn’t work for us, making us wonder if we’re simply invisible!

When we take our gifts for granted, others do too.  When we fail to see our true magnificence, others will also fail to see it.  The remedy to all of this has already begun in the demon being named – the false belief that there is no reward for being good. The next step is believing in the unique gifts we bring to the world and that what we bring IS TRULY UNIQUE!  To help you/all of us with this, I share the following meditation:

Place yourself within your own body for a moment….go deep within yourself and REMEMBER.  Remember the magnificent gifts you brought into the world that allowed you to become the person you became in your family of origin – protector, peacemaker, mediator, etc. etc. etc.  Remember the gifts that already existed within you that allowed you to become who you became – courage, tenacity, patience, creativity, empathy, self-sufficiency, independence, responsible, deep listener, observer, rememberer, playful, entertaining, discipline, etc. etc. etc.  Remember that your mission and purpose were already present within you at the moment of your birth and reflect on how that mission and purpose was informed, developed, cultivated through your childhood experiences (good and bad).  Remember how your gifts are unique from those of your peers.  Remember how you were set apart as (or thought of yourself as) different.  Remember the moment you became aware of your calling and everything you have done to pursue and fulfill that calling.  Remember every training, every class, every experience that supported the development of your gifts and your calling.  Remember ALL THE HARD WORK and everything it took within you, every sacrifice you have made to get where you are today.  Recognize that you are unique in having pursued your calling!  Recognize what you had to leave behind in order to fulfill this calling.  Acknowledge all those who have had the opportunity to pursue their calling and were too afraid to continue.  Recognize the courage, tenacity, patience, faith, stubbornness that got you to where you are today.  SEE the brilliant star-like presence that lies within the center of your heart.  This is the Light of the Divine that dwells within you and which IS your soul’s calling.  See this light pulsing and glowing and shining forth into the world from within you.  Watch as it reaches out into the farthest reaches of space, bringing forth your light and love into the world.  As it reaches out into the world, observe as it draws toward you all those who are in need of your unique gifts – gifts only you can give them.  Watch as those who need your gifts reach toward you in acknowledgement and gratitude for your gifts and know in your heart that only you can fulfill this need within them.  FEEL the recognition of your gifts as seen through their eyes and FEEL the value of the gratitude they feel in receiving your gifts.  FEEL the value of who you are and what you bring into the world. FEEL the value of all your hard work, years of study and practice, etc.  KNOW that what you have is special and unique and that there are thousands, if not millions, clamoring for your gifts.  KNOW that as you believe in the value of your unique giftedness so too will the world.

As we commemorate the birth of love into the world in the person of Jesus who became Christ,  this is my prayer for you:  That in 2018 you REALIZE the magnificence that you are and experience the abundant reward in being good.

Merry Christmas,

Love,

Lauri

Humble Gratitude

This is another day of gratitude to YOU……my blog readers!  I have recently received some VERY GENEROUS donations to my ministry from readers of this blog.  These donations allow me to continue to offer this blog free of charge, but more importantly, it is donations such as these that allow me to continue to offer my programs and services (Spiritual Direction and Hands-on Healing) to my clients regardless of their ability to pay.

I believe so much in the work that I do, and have seen the results in my clients and students, that I did not want these benefits to be accessible only to those who have the means to pay.  I also believe that the gifts I have, as well as the call, have both been Divinely guided and that in the end, it is God doing the work….not me.  As such, it has always been my policy to ask people to pay only what they are able.  Some are able to pay my suggested fees, many are not.  As such, a lot of the work I do is either in trade, at a greatly discounted rate, or completely pro-bono.  I have trusted that in doing this God would provide and that my own financial needs would be met so that I could not only continue in this ministry, but continue to offer my programs and services to anyone and everyone who needs them.  Donations that I receive to this ministry allow me to continue my commitment to this ministry and to my current pricing arrangements.

So…..THANK YOU for your generous donations and know that I accept them in humble gratitude and wonder.

God Talking

God talks to me and God talks to you, each and every day.  The question is, do we take the time to ask the questions, to listen….and more importantly to BELIEVE?

Asking the Question

Yesterday I had the fantastic opportunity to spend a short amount of time with an old and dear friend.  He is a man that is busy beyond busy, so sixty minutes looking at houses with him was a gift beyond measure.  This is a friend who has known me for nearly twenty years and who has watched me learn, grow and change and has seen me in my personal life, in the corporate world and in ministry.  He is also a man who has been blessed with fantastic financial abundance and since financial success has been elusive to me, I decided to pick his brain.  After he expounded on my “amazing gifts,” his final assessment of my financial “struggles” was, “Lauri, I think you might be chicken.”     I’m still chewing on that one because as much as I want to argue with him, there is a grain of truth in this…..I just don’t know yet what that grain is.  His observations have given me pause to ponder financial success and my history of lack in this area.  So, I decided to turn to God with this question.  “God, why has financial success continually eluded me?”  I was surprised to hear God’s immediate answer:

God Answers

Through words and images, God showed me that I have always been given “enough” financial abundance to meet my needs and that anything beyond that would have prevented me from pursuing anything more than the American ideal of climbing the corporate ladder and a big paycheck.  If I had been blessed with enormous financial resources, there would have been no motivation to search beyond the American dream and I would never have taken the time or the risk to pursue my spiritual studies and ministerial path.  And, with nothing more than just what I needed to live, I had nothing to lose by pursuing a spiritual calling.  The “lack” of financial resources, God showed me, has been an enormous gift that has left me free to pursue my dreams and the passions of my heart.  God then went on to one-up the financial message and showed me all the challenges, struggles and losses of my life and revealed to me how all of these perceived difficulties served a higher purpose of leading me to my gifts, my passion and my calling.    Who knew?

Unexpected Gratitude

So, here is the weird thing.  Now, instead of feeling frustrated, angry, impatient and mournful over all the challenges in my life, including the lack of financial “success”, I now feel grateful.  After God showed me the higher purpose behind all that I had previously judged as “lack”, I can now see the gift and offer a prayer of thanksgiving for all that God has shown me.

For the Record

Now, before I appear as some sort of benevolent, financially humble ascetic, the other words of my dear friend also haunt me, “And, maybe you don’t dream big enough.”  So, on that order…..I do dream about breaking through the ceiling of mere sustainance and here, for the record, are my financial dreams:

  • I dream that my book, Authentic Freedom – Claiming a Life of Contentment and Joy will be a best seller and sell 1 million copies in the first year!
  • I dream of the financial resources to buy a comfortable and beautiful home for myself and my children, to provide for the education of my children and to establish a permanent endowment for the long-term care of “Lake Lumby” in Northern Minnesota.
  • I dream of the financial resources to build a year-round dwelling at Lake Lumby for all the Lumby progeny.
  • I dream of a successful career as a Spiritual Director and writer.
  • I dream of the future publication of the rest of my spiritual curriculum, novels and poetry that I am working on and continue to work on.

So, those are my dreams and if they are not big enough, I can certainly make them bigger……knowing that all will manifest as God determines “in the highest good.”  And this I will trust.

Where are you taking time to speak to and listen for God?

Do you believe God when God speaks to you?

How might God’s perspective differ from yours?

Gifts, Abundance and Gratitude

Gratitude, abundance, stepping fully into our own unique gifts, claiming our truth, following the Divinely-revealed path….all topics in today’s blog.

This morning I offer a profound prayer of gratitude to the reader who presented me with the first cash donation for this blog, and to the Divine inspiration that prompted me to step out of my own comfort zone and present readers with the opportunity to provide an energy exchange for the work that I do here.  Me, getting paid for what I do?  REALLY????

The whole topic of money is such a foreign concept for me.  I have never been attached to money, neither have I sought to accumulate a stash of wealth.  In fact, in comparison to some, it might appear as if I have taken a vow of poverty.  While that might be a noble thought and a call to which some are authentically called….I can honestly say, I’m not that virtuous.    I am pretty sure that I’m not called to forsake all material reward in exchange for a begging bowl and a spot in the local homeless shelter.  Call me selfish….but that really doesn’t sound life-giving to me.  But then again, what does a vow of poverty mean anyway…. if it means accepting what you need in exchange for generously sharing your gifts and giving back out of your surplus, then perhaps I could contemplate poverty as an authentic call.

So, let’s talk about the sharing of gifts part….One of the things that I share in my upcoming book, Authentic Freedom – a Holistic Approach to the Teaching of Christ, is the Divine truth that each of us are uniquely gifted and called to reveal Divine love, healing, compassion, peace, joy and truth in the world.  And….when we name, claim, cultivate and ultimately share these gifts, the natural reward is our own abundant experience of contentment and joy.

In my own journey, it seems that the Divine has given me healing and teaching gifts and has called me to share these gifts in the world.  One of the ways I do this is through this blog.  It is my hope that in sharing my own gifts through this blog, my upcoming books and through the programs and services I offer that others will find healing and release from their own inner blocks to their magnificence, and realize their original nature as men and women of joyful contentment. As I have grown in my ability to share these gifts and have witnessed the results in the lives of my readers, clients and program participants, all I can do is sit back in awe and wonder over the way in which God has worked through me to facilitate healing and release in others.  It is this humble witness that is my ultimate reward….and for this I am eternally grateful – and frankly, it is simply bonus when this reward shows up in financial ways as well.  So to the reader that has offered my first donation and to anyone else who may feel so called – thank you.

In humble gratitude,

Lauri Lumby
