Spiritual Development – Surviving a Freefall

I define spiritual development as: the process through which we uncover the answer to the following questions:

  • Who am I?
  • Whose am I? (Where do I find peace and belonging?)
  • What are my gifts and how am I called to use them for the sake of my own fulfillment and in service to the betterment of the world?

At the moment of our spiritual awakening, we are given the choice to pursue the path of our spiritual development. Some choose this path.  Many do not. For those who choose the path of spiritual development….with self-actualization being the ultimate outcome, they soon discover that the journey of spiritual development is as much about letting go as it is about discovery.  In order to become our most authentic selves, we have to let go of that which is not authentically ours.  As such, the journey toward self-actualization includes many tiny (and sometimes HUGE) deaths.

I have recently been met with another one of those deaths. In my own journey of self-development and self-discovery, I have grown accustomed to these many deaths, but familiarity doesn’t always make it any more tolerable.  In fact, in many ways, knowing that death is upon us is more frightening than death taking us by surprise. The current death (which in truth is just another in a long line of current dyings) I am facing is the end of what I have known as my local professional life.  On Tuesday I taught my last local class.  While this has not been a financially lucrative endeavor for quite some time, and I knew this death was coming, the reality hit me like a storm.  With nothing yet to take its place, I have nothing to look forward to, nothing to plan or plan for, nothing to DO but stare into the empty void of a new life that has not yet been revealed.  Two weeks ago I felt like I was staring into the abyss.  Having faced the end, I find I am no longer staring, I am in full-on FREE FALL.  In a free fall, there is literally NOTHING to hang on to, nothing to cling to and nowhere to find a hand or foot hold.  Instead, we are only falling….or floating….or FLYING!

spiritual development, self actualization, freefalling, freel falling, spiritual awakening, defining spiritual development,

Having done nothing but support spiritual development for the past 25 years, my own and that of others, I know what to do and how to survive a free fall.

There is literally nothing else to do. We cannot fight it.  When falling through the abyss we cannot turn around and go back from whence we came.  Without a new world in sight, there is nothing to work toward or work for.  We cannot MAKE ourselves crawl up through the gaping void to some safe place above us.  All we can do is FALL.  But, there are ways in which we can support ourselves in the falling:

During the freefall, we grieve.

We mourn the life that we are being asked to leave behind. We deny.  We bargain.  We become depressed and paralyzed (THANK YOU Netflix for 13 seasons of Supernatural to keep me entertained when I am otherwise immobile).  We grow angry.  We gnash our teeth.  We scream and shout and wail.  We weep.  We allow our bodies to grieve what has been so that we can be healed and freed of that life and made ready for something new.

During the freefall we pray.

(or whatever your language is for that). For me, it is asking and begging for support, to know that I am not alone.  My prayer includes gratitude for all the past life has given me and the support in knowing that a letting go so enormous means something equally huge is coming to take its place.  I pray for peace.  I pray for hope.  I pray for any tiny glimpses that might help me continue on.  In addition to prayer, I double up on my daily spiritual practice.  I meditate.  I read and reflect on scripture.  I journal.  I chant (or listen to mantra).

During the freefall we sleep.

When a dying occurs, our bodies, minds, and spirits are being rewired. It requires an enormous amount of psychic energy to let go of something that has been (especially when it is somehow related to our identity….which mine is) and to be made ready for the new. Sleep supports the release of what has been and the energetic preparation for what has not yet come to be.

During the freefall we remember.

This is the place for our life review. We reflect on what has been.  Any unresolved fears/compulsion/demons from that life make an appearance so that we have one more opportunity to bring them healing and transformation ensuring we are ready to enter into the new life when it comes.

During the freefall we do nothing.

This may be the most difficult part of the freefall. There is literally NOTHING we can do to hasten the departure from what has been and the entry into something new.  All we can “do” is BE.  And in our culture, being is really hard to do (not to mention all the twisted stares we get from people when we tell them all we “did” today was watch Netflix).  Doing, however, during this stage in the freefall produces NOTHING.  It simply reminds us of how NOT life-giving our old life had become and how ready we are for something new.

How have you supported yourself during the many dyings that have happened along your path of spiritual development?

Five Signs of a Spiritual Awakening

Spiritual Awakening

is the beginning of our journey toward self actualization. Beyond the drive for survival and continuation of the species, the drive to become self actualized is perhaps our greatest drive. While the whispering of this drive may be present even before we are fully conscious, it begins in earnest at the threshold of our spiritual awakening.  Below are five signs that you are at the threshold of or deep in the midst of your spiritual awakening:

Unless we are fortunate enough to have discovered the path of our Soul early in life, somewhere around the time of our first Saturn return (between the ages of 26- 28), we will find ourselves dissatisfied with the current trajectory of our life. None of what we thought would make us “happy” – education, job, relationships, family, possessions, etc. – seems to be making us happy.  Instead, we suddenly find ourselves questioning our choices, wondering why we spent all that time, money, etc. in pursuit of something that now only leaves us dissatisfied.  This is the beginning of our spiritual awakening – awakening to the truth that the choices we have made so far are not providing the satisfaction we had hoped and dreamed for. (PS The second stage of this spiritual awakening takes place during midlife….a topic for another blog!)

Along with dissatisfaction comes restlessness. The human drive toward self-actualization is comprised of a palpable energy, something akin to the drive to procreate.  It is a drive that if not directed toward its ultimate goal will leave us feeling restless, wondering where and into what to put this energy.  It is because of this restlessness that many begin their search, but instead of seeking within, the search often gets directed outside of us in the search for that “thing” (status, power, money, fame, material possessions, etc.) that might put an end to the restlessness.  Until we learn to direct this restlessness inward, we will continue to feel restless and dissatisfied.

Until satisfied, the human drive toward self-actualization will leave us feeling frustrated, even angry and filled with rage. Not unlike our biological need to procreate in order that the species may continue, the drive to become self-actualized is inwardly motivated and marks the beginning of our spiritual awakening.  When this drive is suppressed, ignored, repressed or resisted in any way, we are left feeling frustrated and unfulfilled.  The only satisfaction to the drive toward self-actualization is to pursue it.

The greatest longing of the human soul that has entered its spiritual awakening is self-knowledge. We long to know ourselves, our unique giftedness, and how we are called to use these gifts for the sake of our own fulfillment and in service to the betterment of the world.  When this longing goes unheeded or unfulfilled, a little part of us “dies.”  The longer we ignore this longing and suppress the frustration that marks the awakening of this longing, the more a part of our soul “dies.”  It is here that depression will emerge in response to a calling that has gone unheeded.

In the process of our spiritual awakening and in the journey toward self-actualization, anxiety plays many roles. Anxiety plays a critical role in the process of discernment – helping us to know the path of our Soul vs. the path of the false self.  Anxiety alerts us to relationships, situations and experiences that might endanger our Soul’s path.  Anxiety arises to alert us to unacknowledged fears or unhealed wounds that might need to be addressed in our journey of spiritual awakening.  Contrary to reason, anxiety also shows up when we are taking a step in the direction of our self-actualization.  If there is one thing that is certain in the journey of our spiritual awakening – it is change.  And if there is one thing humans fear more than death, it is change.

What is Spiritual Formation?

Lauri Ann Lumby sharing and enjoying the fruits of her own spiritual formation

What is Spiritual Formation?

Spiritual Formation is the process through which we come to uncover the answer to the following questions:

  • Who Am I?
  • What is my Source and where do I obtain Inner Guidance and Peace?
  • What are my unique gifts and how am I called to share these gifts for my own fulfillment and for the betterment of the human condition?

Spiritual Formation might also be understood as the process through which we find:

Meaning, Purpose and Connection in our lives.

A formal process of spiritual formation gives us the tools to discern the answers to these questions in an unconditionally supportive environment, free from judgment.  While we may find support for spiritual formation within some of our religious traditions, the inner longing which drives this search to know ourselves, our origin, our gifts and how we are called to use them, is universal and therefore independent of doctrine or belief.

Lauri Ann Lumby and Spiritual Formation

For over twenty years, I have provided spiritual formation for adults.  I have journeyed with hundreds of men and women in their search for meaning, purpose and connection and have witnessed the fruits of this search as clients and students have come to discover, embrace and live out their own unique giftedness.  In uncovering and living these gifts, they have found fulfillment, peace and joy.  I facilitate this journey of spiritual formation through:

  • Spiritual Direction and Spiritual Counseling
  • Creative Mentoring
  • Classes
  • Workshops
  • Retreats

Psychological and Spiritual Development

Through my ministries as a Spiritual Director in the Ignatian tradition, a Lay Minister and a Reiki Master Practitioner,  I have developed Authentic Freedom, a formal curriculum for the Psychological and Spiritual Formation of adults.  Rooted in the Western Contemplative tradition, Authentic Freedom has a universal application that speaks to people across a broad spectrum of religious beliefs and practices.

Transcending dogma, Authentic Freedom  reveals the powerful and life-changing message at the heart of Jesus’ teachings and the universal truths at the core of every religion, making this curriculum relevant to a modern audience.  Authentic Freedom provides effective tools through which participants are able to grow in their relationship with God (the God of their understanding) and with themselves, begin the process of gifts discernment, identify and transcend the inner obstacles to naming and sharing those gifts so that they can freely and openly sharing their gifts in the world for the betterment of all.

Authentic Freedom is comprised of four courses:

  • Called to Freedom
  • Authentic Freedom
  • Deepening Freedom
  • Living in Freedom

With applications for spirituality, religion, psychology, counseling, recovery, movement therapies, meditation and mindfulness, holistic wellness and ecumenism, Authentic Freedom appeals to a wide audience with a diversity of interests.

It is my hope to create a network of teaching centers where the Authentic Freedom curriculum is being offered.  As such, I have created a diverse spectrum of offerings through which Authentic Freedom can be shared in the world:

1) Local courses

2) On-line courses (Click HERE for upcoming online offerings)

3) Authentic Freedom facilitator training (Click HERE for information)

4) And finally, I am in the process of contacting retreat and wellness centers who might be potential centers through which Authentic Freedom can be made available.  My goal is to find people within those centers who could be trained as Authentic Freedom facilitators and share this curriculum with their unique audiencee.

If you think you may be interested in taking an Authentic Freedom class, becoming a facilitator or if you know of retreat or wellness centers who may be potential centers for learning, please contact me at (920) 230-1313  or

Thank you.

Spiritual Direction – Lauri Style Part III

When people ask me what I do for a living, I often wonder how to respond.  As my friend Derek says, “It’s……just…..Lauri.  She’s awesome and you have to try her classes and services.”  Thank you Derek, and as we have both observed, this is usually not enough to get people to make the call or show up for the class.  When my Board of Director’s and I came up with my mission statement: Through compassionate listening and attentive presence, I partner with those longing to find meaning, purpose and connectedness in their lives, this at least explains the benefits that you receive from working with me and how I do it…..but still, what the heck is Spiritual Direction and why am I person you might want to work with?

Windows to the Soul by Catherine Case
Windows to the Soul by Catherine Case

Yesterday, I revealed a little about the “what.”  Today, let’s talk about why me? And just because I sometimes like to have fun….I’m putting it into the language of Spiritual Gifts.

Why Working with ME (Lauri Lumby) differs from other forms of counseling, therapy, recovery work, spiritual direction:

  • Speaking in Tongues: While my background is Roman Catholic and my guru is Jesus, I speak AND understand all forms of religous, spiritual and even non-religious language.  More importantly, I speak YOUR language.   If you are Buddist, we’ll speak in that tongue.  If you are Christian, we’ll speak that language.  Athiest…yep, I can speak that one too.  Bottom line:  differences in religious beliefs and practices are NOT an obstacle to the work we will accomplish together.
  • Discernment of Spirits: I can identify in you when something is coming from your truest self.  More importantly, I can see, feel and hear the fearful, anxious, worried, stunted parts of you.  The fear in you waves like a red banner that I see and help you to identify so that it no longer has power over you.
  • Prophecy: Prophecy is the ability to hear, see and evaluate the sign of the times.  In one-on-one work, it is the ability to HEAR, SEE, and PERCEIVE, the truth beyond the words.  You say one thing….but your heart wants, desires, reveals, something else.  My job is to be attentive to this and help you to see it too.  And trust me, I CAN see it.  😉
  • Teaching: It has been said that more than anything, I am a teacher.  A teacher’s job is to INFORM, SUPPORT, UPLIFT and most importantly…..TO EMPOWER you to be your most authentic and most fulfilled self.   Effective teachers also hold us accountable.  I will let you know when your ego is in the way, when you are clinging to your need to be right or harboring resentment against yourself or another.  I will also let you know when you need to grieve a loss instead of wallowing in the guilt over your depression or sorrow. And finally, I will encourage you to BE GOOD, GENTLE, TENDER and KIND toward yourself. And, I will give you the tools to help you do all of these things.
  • Healing: The work we will do together is HEALING.  I give you the tools you need to heal your unhealed losses, hurts, disappointments, wounds and more importantly, the tools to help you MOVE THROUGH your fears so that you can live a life that is joyful, happy and free.

Empowering Spiritual Teachers

There is a growing hunger in Western culture to find meaning, purpose and connectedness in our lives free from the traditional route that has been rooted in dogma and doctrine.   Authentic Freedom Ministries is leading the charge by empowering teachers to assist us along this path.

Calling All Magdalenes!

Authentic Freedom Teacher Training is officially in full swing.  Women and men are coming out of the woodwork who have either read Authentic Freedom and been inspired by the tools presented or taken the classes and experienced the life-changing effect of employing its principles.  All this is in keeping with the vision of Authentic Freedom Ministries:

To be a global presence in spiritual formation, grounded in contemplative prayer and empowered service.

I affectionately refer to these men and women as “The Magdalenes” because I consider Mary Magdalene to be the Apostle who most closely reflected the contemplative lifestyle and compassion of Jesus and who most clearly understood the tools through which we can transcend the fears of the human condition and release that which separates us from God, from ourselves and from one another.  When we embrace these principles, we understand that we are all One and are freed of the fears that come out of this false perception of separation and block our way to peace, love and joy.

The Teachers’ Role

The role of the Authentic Freedom teacher is to be a source of support for those looking for meaning, purpose and connectedness in their lives by facilitating the Authentic Freedom curriculum.  Authentic Freedom transcends centuries of dogma to reveal the powerful and life-changing message at the heart of Jesus’ teachings and the universal truths at the core of every religion. The best part about this curriculum and why people love it so much is that they don’t have to throw Jesus out with the bathwater.  This is an important piece for those raised Catholic or any other Christian denomination who appreciate the compassion and justice of Jesus’ message but who struggle with how it is sometimes presented by institutions as punitive, judgmental or divisive.  Instead, Authentic Freedom reveals a dynamic and unifying path of spiritual transformation and empowerment that speaks to people of all beliefs thereby allowing us to embrace the truth of love that Jesus taught while honoring the truth of love as taught through other spiritual traditions – again, setting aside separation and embracing oneness.

The Bonus

It is easy to see the application of Authentic Freedom in spirituality and religion, and it is important to recognize that it doesn’t stop there.  Those who are seeking empowerment as Authentic Freedom Facilitators recognize the far-reaching benefits of these tools in the following fields:

  • Spirituality
  • Religion
  • Psychology
  • Counseling
  • Recovery
  • Yoga
  • Meditation and Mindfulness
  • Holistic wellness
  • Ecumenism

It has been additionally noted that the audience for Authentic Freedom might be in traditional church environments but will more likely be found elsewhere such as:

  • Retreat Centers
  • Spirituality Centers
  • Yoga Studios
  • Progressive Churches
  • Recovery Groups
  • Wellness Centers
  • Support Groups
  • Counseling Centers
  • House Churches
  • Meditation Groups

What is Spiritual Direction Anyway?

In today’s blog, I explore the ministry of Spiritual Direction and try to explain what in many ways is unexplainable!

Blank Stares and Psychic Accusations

I am always challenged when people ask me, “So Lauri, what is it that you do exactly?” When I explain that I am a Spiritual Director and Reiki Practitioner and that I teach classes in Spirituality for adults…..mostly I am met with a blank stare.  This blank stare is then followed by another question, “What is spiritual direction?”   UM…..UH….Sputter…..stammer….Doh!    I never know how to answer this question and when I do try to answer the question, I get questions about being psychic and/or doing psychic readings.  Um……sorry…..I’m not psychic and I don’t do “readings,” but I know people who are if you want me to give you their number.  🙂

What is Spiritual Direction?

The ministry of Spiritual Direction is difficult to explain because it can take on so many different qualities.  It looks a little like therapy because there is a lot of talking involved and the topics that do come up might be the same as the topics you would bring to a therapy session:  grief, life transitions, seeking direction, relationship struggles, recovery, etc.  Spiritual Direction, however is dramatically different from therapy in its intention, direction and desired outcome.  The primary focus of Spiritual Direction is to help you get in touch with the voice of truth within yourself and to move through the obstacles to living that truth.  Sounds pretty fancy and esoteric, right?  To put it into theistic terms (God), Spiritual Direction provides you with the tools to know God, to know yourself, to uncover your own unique giftedness and to find ways to live that out in the world.  Ultimately, Spiritual Direction is NOT about talking.  It is about listening….and my job as a Spiritual Director is to help you learn to hear your own truth and to give you tools to move through the fears that may be blocking your ability to hear and live that truth.  To give you some examples, here are the things Spiritual Direction has helped me to hear and move toward embracing:

  • I heard the call to pursue training as a Lay Minister, Spiritual Director and Reiki Master Practitioner and Spiritual Direction helped me move through the fears that had previously kept me from these roles.
  • I came to understand that I had been gifted as a writer and was called to share my writing publicly (through this blog and through my published books)
  • Spiritual Direction gave me the tools to move through the fears and pain of being rejected by my church for standing in the call that God had given me (Reiki, Contemplative Practices, my books)
  • Spiritual Direction helped me to see that my marriage had come to an irreparable end and that divorce was necessary
  • Spiritual Direction helped me to release past resentments, hurts and betrayals that were blocking my ability to being open to healthy intimacy with friends, family, loved ones.
  • Spiritual Direction helped me to identify behaviors, perceptions, etc. that were keeping me from living a joyful and contented life.
  • Spiritual Direction helped me to find tools that have deepened my relationship with the Source of peace (that I call God), and have allowed me to experience more peace in my life.
  • Spiritual Direction helps me to receive Divine guidance more clearly with less confusion and doubt.
  • Spiritual Direction has helped me to listen, hear, receive, BELIEVE and live my truth more authentically and with less fear.

In a nutshell….Spiritual Direction is really cool……and the best part is that it is EMPOWERING!!!!  You are the one doing the work.  I am just standing as witness, helping you to hear the things that you can’t hear yourself.  In this way, the responsibility of Spiritual Direction ultimately lies with you….I am just the witness.  And while I have been accused of being able to “hear the truth beyond the words,” I am not psychic.  I’m just listening and helping you to do the same.
