For months I’ve been wanting to see the movie Divergent. I have begged and pleaded with my teenage daughter to watch it with me. Sadly, she was uninterested. So, I finally had a night to myself and I watched it without her! HOLY COW! Am I glad I watched that movie. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it. While Divergent is a work of fiction, there is so much truth in this movie. For me, the truth I took away from the movie is that I just might be divergent…..if I am, and you are reading this blog, you might be divergent too!
As the opening credits of the film proclaim:
You’re different. You don’t fit into a category. They can’t control you. They call it Divergent.
You can’t let them find out about you.
And what Divergents feel in their heart:
I don’t want to be just one thing. I can’t be. I want to be brave, and I want to be selfless, intelligent,
and honest and kind.
The institutions rooted in power and control, manipulating through intimidation and fear who want us to sit down, shut up and do what we are told abhor Divergents. But if we hope to survive as a species and to crawl out from under 5000 years of fear and oppression, Divergents are necessary. We need people that defy the norm and who confront status quo. We need people who can’t be one thing, who seek to be brave, selfless, intelligent, honest and kind. And we need people who are willing to stand up in favor of a world that is all of these, ignoring all that is cloaked in fear and working toward a world rooted in love, guided by wisdom and grounded in peace.
I guess this makes me Divergent. And maybe you are too!
