The purpose of a midlife crisis, perimenopause and menopause (from a spiritual perspective) is to move us beyond childbearing to birthing ourselves…and this is as true for men as it is for women. During midlife and menopause, we are invited to leave behind the life we have known to make room for the new life that is trying to be born through us. In birthing our new selves, we are birthing our Soul – the unique way we are creatively gifted to find meaning, purpose, connection and fulfillment in our lives and the way in which we find fulfillment by contributing to the betterment of our world. A critical element in the success of the midlife journey (measured by our level of inner fulfillment and peace) is forgiveness. Today’s blog explores midlife as a journey of forgiveness.
Midlife and Menopause – A Journey of Forgiveness
Forgiveness is a critical component of the midlife, perimenopause and menopause journey and we will not be successful in the midlife journey unless we learn and master the power of forgiveness. If the purpose of the midlife journey the birth of our Soul – the uniquely creative way in which we have been gifted to find meaning, purpose, connection and fulfillment in our lives and through which we are called to serve the world, then we must first be purged of all the things within us that stand in the way of our Soul. The Soul, the uniquely gifted part of who we are, lies in wait, buried under all of the things in our life that are no longer life giving, all of the past wounds, betrayals, disappointments, losses, conflicts, resentments, hurts, deaths and departures that have not yet been fully healed and released. Our Soul also lies buried under every unresolved judgment, criticism and condemnation. And our Soul lies imprisoned, most especially, by all the inner voices of self-judgment, self-condemnation, self-doubt and self-loathing. When we harbor resentment against others, or heap judgment upon ourselves, the Soul cannot be freed and instead, fights and struggles for release.
Midlife and Menopause – Who we are asked to forgive
In a nutshell….EVERYONE! During the midlife journey we are invited to confront and release EVERY past hurt, resentment, situation of self-condemnation, etc. During midlife, we have to stop blaming others, the universe, God for our life situations and accept responsibility for who and where we are. And then….we have to forgive ourselves. Surviving and being successful in midlife, then, is ultimately about learning how to forgive. What follows are three of my favorite forgiveness practices to help assist you in that process:
