This week, we are focusing on the invitation to bring forth life that will persist. We spoke on Monday about the process of labor in giving birth and yesterday I shared with you the story of the acorn. (All of this will be discussed in even greater detail in my upcoming book, Authentic Freedom – Claiming a Life of Contentment and Joy that is being released this fall through St. Johann Press). http://www.authenticfreedom.net
In the story of the acorn, I shared the process of letting go and surrendering that is critical for the truth within us to fully emerge. I want to revisit the story of the acorn for a moment, specifically the inner make up of an acorn. If you split open an acorn and look within what do you see? All you are able to see is the nut meat that is held within. There in nothing in the nut that even begins to suggest that the acorn, when planted in the ground and given the proper nouishment, light and water, will one day become a mighty oak. And yet, when the acorn is given these crucial things for growth, it has no choice but to become an oak tree. No matter how much we try to tamper with it, or control it, it cannot become a maple, or a dog or a fish. Acorn + dirt, water, light = oak tree.
The same is true of ourselves. There is nothing inside or outside of us that even begins to suggest the truth of our unique giftedness. And yet, when given the proper environment, nourishment and support, we have no choice but to become the unique expression of Divine love that God first intended when we were dreamed into being. Each of us, like the acorn, is imprinted with God’s greatest image of the person that we are intended to become. Maybe we are imprinted with the gift of creative expression, the gift of music, the gift of service, the gift healing, the gift of teaching, the gift of loving, the gift of nurturing, the gift of inspiration, etc. etc. etc. When we are given the proper environment, etc. we have no choice but to become this gift.
And here is the most amazing thing……even when our environment seems to lack the support we need to become this gift, something inside of us moves us toward the realization of this gift, in spite of our own resistance or the seeming resistance of the environment around us. Like the acorn that seeks to become the oak, there is something deep within us that seeks relentlessly to become the Truth that God has planted within us. Think of it like this – you are an acorn and inside you is the oak waiting to emerge. The oak tree will push and prod and inspite of our resistance, will eventually break through the outer shell to reveal the potential within. Think of how uncomfortable that emerging oak feels as it begins to grow and seeks to emerge…..this is the discomfort we feel within when our own truth is trying to break free. Call to mind the image of an egg and the chick within. Think of the constriction, the closed in feeling the chick must be experiencing as it has grown to its fullness within the egg and now wants nothing more to break free. Think of the way the chick pokes at the outer shell, struggling to break free of the home that has now become a prison. Think of the liberation the chick feels once it has broken free of that shell and now can move about freely on its own. This is how it is with our own truth. Our unique giftedness will poke and prod us from within until it is able to break free of the constrictions that have held it within. Once released, we experience a profound feeling of liberation and freedom and can breath freely as we move toward sharing our gift in the world.
What is the YOU that is waiting to become?
