A Good Old Fashioned Spiritual Butt-Kicking

Tired of Speaking Sweetly
 (by Hafiz)

Love wants to reach out and manhandle us,
Break all our teacup talk of God.

If you had the courage and
Could give the Beloved His choice, some nights,
He would just drag you around the room
By your hair,
Ripping from your grip all those toys in the world
That bring you no joy.

Love sometimes gets tired of speaking sweetly
And wants to rip to shreds
All your erroneous notions of truth

That make you fight within yourself, dear one,
And with others,

Causing the world to weep
On too many fine days.

God wants to manhandle us,
Lock us inside of a tiny room with Himself
And practice His dropkick.

The Beloved sometimes wants
To do us a great favor:

Hold us upside down
And shake all the nonsense out.

But when we hear
He is in such a “playful drunken mood”
Most everyone I know
Quickly packs their bags and hightails it
Out of town.

In this work by the Persian poet, Hafiz, we see depicted the spiritual butt-kicking aspect of God.  This piece beautifully represents the way in which the Divine spirit within us provokes, urges, nags and compels us to pursue our deepest and most authentic truth.  In bold, assertive images, the Divine tears from our grasp all those things that stand in the way of us being and living as our most magnificent, gifted, amazing self.  And….we have all felt the power of this energy:  When we feel inspired to accomplish a task and will not be stopped until it is complete, when we experience the anxiety within when faced with perceived obstacles to our creative expression, when we feel the fire within building when we feel as if we will explode if we do not act on or speak our truth.  This is the spiritual butt-kicking aspect of the Divine compelling us out of our complacency and into the world of our most authentic truth.  Unfortunately, as Hafiz also reminds, most of us turn and run the other way when we see this face of God approaching.
