A Feather on the Breath of God

“The feather flew, not because of anything in itself but because the air bore it along.

Thus am I, a feather on the breath of God.”

– Hildegard of Bingen

How much time in a day do we spend worrying, planning, anticipating events, conversations, things that we ultimately have no control over?  Planning and imagining future events in our heads is probably one of the greatest sources of anxiety and stress in our lives.  We do not know what the future holds, nor do we have any control over it.  All we can control (sometimes) is our reaction to the events as they unfold.  Peace is attained when we can let go of our compulsive need to create the illusion of control through planning and worry and surrender to our life as it unfolds and reveals itself.

St. Hildegard of Bingen, a 10th century mystic, healer, artist, composer, writer and prophet spoke to this invitation to surrender – “Thus am I a feather on the breath of God.”  She took note of the ways that feathers are gently held in the air and carried by the wind currents below and likened it to the way that God carries each of us.  Can we surrender to the idea that our Divine Source is carrying us to our highest purpose and good and that we shall arrive there safely if we but surrender to the Divine breath that holds us aloft?  Is it possible that it is only our struggle, our worry, our clinging and our need to control that curtails our journey to our Divine destination?  Can we let go and allow ourselves to be that feather on the breath of God?
