Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it!
1 Corinthians 12: 27
I remember the first time I really heard these words and the way they found their place into the deepest part of my being and I was struck to the core with this awareness – I AM THE BODY OF CHRIST! And, I suddenly realized that these words of Paul were not just for the Corinthians, but for each and every person on this planet, past, present and future, including me. WE ARE ALL THE BODY OF CHRIST! Now, what does that mean?
When I reflect upon these words and bring them into prayerful contemplation, I am drawn to explore the life of Jesus and the truth that he came to reveal. Jesus, along with other great teachers, had somehow come into a profound understanding of his Oneness with the Divine and with all that is. He lived out this Oneness through three years of profound service to the world, using his own unique gifts of healing and teaching to reveal the path through which others could also come to the place of remembering their own true nature as One with God and with one another. In his own words (borrowed from Isaiah) he proclaimed:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me
to bring clad tiding to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives
and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free
and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.”
Luke 4: 18-19
Jesus, through his own unique gifts came to set us free – to free us from our blindness and our own interior captivity. Jesus came to reveal the path through which we could let go of the fears and false perceptions that prevent us from remembering our true nature as men and women of peace, love and joy. What Paul is reminding us in his letter to the Corinthians, is that we are called to continue the mission that Jesus so lovingly began. We are called, like Jesus to grow in our ability to remember our Oneness with God and through our own unique gifts, we are called to help others find this truth in their own lives.
I think what I most love about this call to being the body of Christ is that it transcends belief and denomination. Christianity does not hold a monopoly on the truth of Oneness with God and the individual longing to remember this truth. This is the core teaching of Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam and all the great “isms” of the world. This return to Oneness is the universal quest, intention and purpose of our human journey. So, how can we understand the call to “being the body of Christ” in a way that transcends the perceived boundaries of Christianity. Edgar Cayce, 20th century visionary and prophet offers these words:
“Christ Consciousness (another word for Body of Christ) is that part of each of us that is in perfect accord with the Creator and is simply waiting to find expression in our lives. Regardless of an individual’s religious or personal beliefs, this Christ pattern exists in potential upon every fiber of their being. This Christ pattern is further described as ‘the awareness within each soul, imprinted in pattern on the mind and waiting to be awakened by the will, of the soul’s oneness with God’ and the manifestation of this Christ pattern is the eventual destiny of each and every soul.”
Looked at from this perspective, Being the Body of Christ is our highest potential. Jesus of Nazareth found the path to this realization, Siddhartha found his way to this realization as did Moses, Mohammed, Krishna and all the other greatest spiritual teachers, and this is the path that we too are invited to embrace.
So the invitation today is to spend time reflecting on how you are being called to step into your own experience of Christ Consciousness. How are you being called to Be the Body of Christ in the world?
NOTE: This evening, Authentic Freedom Ministries will be hosting an opportunity through which those who feel so called may ritually embrace their own Christ Consciousness, to being the Body of Christ in the world. This ritual is about being open to allowing the Christ Consciousness to be revealed within us. We acknowledge the call to being the Body of Christ and say yes to that call. You are welcome to join us either in body or spirit for this sacred opportunity. The evening of meditation, reflection and ritual will begin at 6:30 pm Central Daylight Time. So, if you feel so called, join us in body or in spirit!
Yours in Christ!
